BORROW vs LEND Learn Meanings and Differences with Example English Sentences

In this video, I’m going to talk about two similar and sometimes confusing English verbs

이번 영상에서는 유사하고 때로는 혼동을 주기도 하는 두 개의 영어 동사 'borrow'와 'lend'

Mixing up the words ‘borrow’ and ‘lend’ can be a common confusion,

'빌리다'와 '빌려주다'라는 단어를 혼동하면 흔히 혼란스러울 수 있지만,

Let’s start with ‘borrow’.

'빌려주기'부터 시작해보자.

It is a verb.

동사입니다.

It means to take something from someone with the plan of giving it back after using it.

사용 후 돌려주려고 누군가에게서 물건을 가져가는 것을 의미합니다.

‘borrow’ is similar to the verbs ‘take’, ‘get’, and ‘receive’.

'빌리다'는 동사 'take', 'get', 'receive'와 유사합니다.

Remember, you borrow from someone.

당신은 누군가에게서 빌린다는 것을 기억하십시오.

Let’s look at some examples.

몇 가지 예를 살펴보겠습니다.

The first sentence says,

첫 번째 문장은

‘Could I borrow your pen for a minute, please?’

'펜을 잠시 빌릴 수 있을까요?'

I’m asking if I can take your pen

Now, I will talk about ‘lend’.

It's an irregular verb.

The past tense of lend is ‘lent’.

빌려주다의 과거형은 '대여하다'입니다.

It means to give something to someone for a short period of time

누군가에게 무언가를 짧은 시간 동안 주고,

expecting it to be given back.

다시 돌려받기를 기대한다는 뜻입니다.

‘lend’ is similar to the verb ‘give’.

'빌려주다'는 '주다'라는 동사와 비슷합니다.

Remember, you lend to someone.

기억하세요, 당신은 누군가에게 빌려줍니다.

Let’s look at some examples.

몇 가지 예를 살펴보겠습니다.

The first sentence says,

‘I never lend my money to anyone.’

'나는 누구에게도 돈을 빌려주지 않습니다.'

This means even though someone might pay me back,

In this conversation, there are a few sentences.

이 대화에는 몇 개의 문장이 있습니다.

In one of the sentences, we should use the word ‘borrow’.

문장 중 하나에서는 '빌리다'라는 단어를 사용해야 합니다.

In the other sentence, we use ‘lend’.

다른 문장에서는 '대출'을 사용합니다.

Take a moment to think about where we use these verbs.

‘A’ says,

'A'가

‘May I _blank_ your car?’

‘A’ is asking ‘B’ can I take something from you and I will return it later.

The word ‘borrow’ means to take and return, so ‘A’ says,

빌린다는 말은 가져갔다가 돌려준다는 뜻이므로 A씨는

'차를 빌려드릴까요?' 라고 말한다.

In reply ‘B’ says, ‘Of course, I'd be happy to _blank_ it to you?’

이에 대해 'B'는 '물론이죠. 기꺼이 _공백_해 드릴까요?'라고 말합니다.

In this case, we use ‘lend’

이 경우에는 'lend'를 사용합니다.

because lend means to give something to someone

왜냐하면 빌려준다는 것은 나중에 돌려받을 것을 알면서

knowing that they'll get it back later.

누군가에게 무언가를 주는 것을 의미하기 때문입니다

So let's take a look.
