Now, today we’re looking at some silent letters.

These are letters that we write but we don’t say.

And in English, there are lots of  common words with silent letters.

So other than the ones I have already mentioned,

‘calm’, ‘knickers’, can you think of any  other words containing silent letters?

There were quite a few words containing  silent letters that Maria mispronounced.

Ok, so, let’s take a look at the  words containing silent letters.

First, we had the word ‘talk’.

أولاً ، كانت لدينا كلمة "حديث".

“Hi! I can’t really talk right now.”

"أهلاً! لا أستطيع أن أتحدث الآن ".

‘Talk’ has a silent ‘L’.

تحتوي كلمة "Talk" على حرف "L" صامت.

Next, we had ‘climb’.

بعد ذلك ، كان لدينا "التسلق".

“I’m at the library looking for books  on climbing and famous climbers.”

‘Climb’ has a silent ‘B’.

The ‘P’ in ‘cupboard’ is silent.

This is the spelling and this is  the pronunciation – ‘cupboard’.

هذا هو التهجئة وهذا هو النطق - "الخزانة".

Next was ‘know’.

التالي كان "معرفة".

“I know. I know.”

‘Know’ has a silent ‘K’ at the beginning.

تحتوي كلمة "Know" على حرف "K" صامت في البداية.

Now, if a word begins with ‘K’ and then  ‘N’ it’s common for that ‘K’ to be silent.

الآن ، إذا بدأت الكلمة بحرف "K" ثم "N" ، فمن الشائع أن تكون "K" صامتة.

So, if you see ‘KN’ just ignore the ‘K’.

Then we had ‘debt’.

Don’t worry if you didn’t know - as a teacher, I  hear my students say this word incorrectly a lot.

لا تقلق إذا كنت لا تعرف - بصفتي مدرسًا ، أسمع طلابي يقولون هذه الكلمة بشكل غير صحيح كثيرًا.

It’s a common mispronunciation so don’t stress.

And to be ‘in debt’ means to owe a lot of money.

Next, we had the word chocolate.

‘Listen’ has a silent ‘T’.

Not ‘lisTen’, but ‘listen’.

ليس "lisTen" ، ولكن "استمع".

‘Listen’.

'استمع'.

‘Listen’.

Another word mispronounced was ‘environment’.

كلمة أخرى أخطأت في نطقها هي "البيئة".

“I can’t really talk in this environment.”

"لا يمكنني التحدث في هذه البيئة."

It has a silent ‘N’ just after the ‘O’.

تحتوي على حرف "N" صامت بعد حرف "O" مباشرةً.

‘Environment’.

'بيئة'.

In the dictionary it will sometimes tell you  that ‘N’ is pronounced, but in reality, it isn’t.

في القاموس سيخبرك أحيانًا أن كلمة "N" تُنطق ، لكنها في الواقع ليست كذلك.

So don’t say ‘EnvirONment’.

لذلك لا تقل "البيئة".

Just ‘Environment’ (/ɪnˈvaɪrəmənt/).

فقط "البيئة" (/ ɪnˈvaɪrəmənt /).

And last but not least,  there was ‘knock’, ‘knock’.

وأخيرًا وليس آخرًا ، كانت هناك "طرق" و "طرق".

“I have to go before the  librarian knocks on the desk.”

"يجب أن أذهب قبل أن يقرع أمين المكتبة على المكتب."

Just like ‘know’, ‘knock’ starts with  ‘K’ and ‘N’ so the ‘K’ here is silent.

تمامًا مثل "know" ، تبدأ كلمة "knock" بحرف "K" و "N" لذا فإن "K" هنا صامت.

Ok, now let’s listen to Maria again with the  correct pronunciation of those silent letters.

Now, both ‘knock’ and ‘know’ have the  same spelling/pronunciation pattern.
