Now, today we’re looking at some silent letters.

자, 오늘 우리는 묵음 편지를 살펴보고 있습니다.

These are letters that we write but we don’t say.

이것은 우리가 쓰지만 말하지 않는 편지입니다.

And in English, there are lots of  common words with silent letters.

그리고 영어에는 묵음으로 된 일반적인 단어가 많이 있습니다.

So other than the ones I have already mentioned,

There were quite a few words containing  silent letters that Maria mispronounced.

Ok, so, let’s take a look at the  words containing silent letters.

자, 묵음이 포함된 단어를 살펴보겠습니다.

First, we had the word ‘talk’.

먼저 '대화'라는 단어가 있었습니다.

“Hi! I can’t really talk right now.”

"안녕! 지금은 정말 말할 수 없습니다.”

‘Talk’ has a silent ‘L’.

'토크'에는 묵음 'L'이 있습니다.

'말하다'.

‘Talk’.

Next, we had ‘climb’.

다음은 '등반'이었습니다.

“I’m at the library looking for books  on climbing and famous climbers.”

“저는 등산과 유명한 등반가에 관한 책을 찾고 도서관에 있습니다.”

‘Climb’ has a silent ‘B’.

'Climb'에는 조용한 'B'가 있습니다.

Say it with me, ‘climb’, ‘climb’.

Then we had ‘cupboard’.

그런 다음 우리는 '찬장'을 가졌습니다.

“I meant to tell you about that. It was me, I broke your cupboard!”

The ‘P’ in ‘cupboard’ is silent.

This is the spelling and this is  the pronunciation – ‘cupboard’.

Next was ‘know’.

다음은 '안다'였다.

‘Know’ has a silent ‘K’ at the beginning.

'Know'는 처음에 무음 'K'로 시작합니다.

Now, if a word begins with ‘K’ and then  ‘N’ it’s common for that ‘K’ to be silent.

이제 단어가 'K'로 시작하고 ' N'으로 시작하면 해당 'K'가 묵음이 되는 것이 일반적입니다.

So, if you see ‘KN’ just ignore the ‘K’.

따라서 'KN'이 보이면 'K'를 무시하십시오.

Then we had ‘debt’.

‘Debt’ has a silent ‘B’.

Don’t worry if you didn’t know - as a teacher, I  hear my students say this word incorrectly a lot.

몰랐더라도 걱정하지 마세요. 저는 교사로서 제 학생들이 이 단어를 잘못 말하는 것을 많이 들었습니다.

It’s a common mispronunciation so don’t stress.

흔한 잘못된 발음이니 스트레스 받지 마세요.

And to be ‘in debt’ means to owe a lot of money.

그리고 '빚을 졌다'는 것은 많은 돈을 빚졌다는 뜻입니다.

Next, we had the word chocolate.

‘Chocolate’ has a silent  ‘O’, so just two syllables.

'초콜릿'에는 무음 'O'가 있으므로 음절이 두 개뿐입니다.

‘Chocolate’.

Then there was ‘answer’.

그러자 '답'이 나왔다.

"내 전화를 받는 것조차 허용되지 않습니다."

‘Answer’ has a silent ‘W’.

'Answer'에는 묵음 'W'가 있습니다.

‘Listen’ was another one.

‘Listen’ has a silent ‘T’.

Not ‘lisTen’, but ‘listen’.

'listen'이 아니라 'listen'입니다.

Another word mispronounced was ‘environment’.

잘못 발음된 또 다른 단어는 '환경'이었습니다.

“I can’t really talk in this environment.”

"이런 환경에서는 정말 말을 못해요."

It has a silent ‘N’ just after the ‘O’.

'O' 바로 뒤에 묵음 'N'이 있습니다.

‘Environment’.

'환경'.

In the dictionary it will sometimes tell you  that ‘N’ is pronounced, but in reality, it isn’t.

사전에는 때때로 'N'이 발음된다고 나와 있지만 실제로는 그렇지 않습니다.

So don’t say ‘EnvirONment’.

그러니 '환경'이라고 말하지 마세요.

Just ‘Environment’ (/ɪnˈvaɪrəmənt/).

그냥 '환경'(/ɪnˈvaɪrəmənt/).

And last but not least,  there was ‘knock’, ‘knock’.

Just like ‘know’, ‘knock’ starts with  ‘K’ and ‘N’ so the ‘K’ here is silent.

'know'와 마찬가지로 'knock'은 'K'와 'N'으로 시작하므로 여기서 'K'는 묵음입니다.
