Now, today we’re looking at some silent letters.

ਹੁਣ, ਅੱਜ ਅਸੀਂ ਕੁਝ ਖਾਮੋਸ਼ ਅੱਖਰਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਦੇਖ ਰਹੇ ਹਾਂ।

These are letters that we write but we don’t say.

ਇਹ ਉਹ ਅੱਖਰ ਹਨ ਜੋ ਅਸੀਂ ਲਿਖਦੇ ਹਾਂ ਪਰ ਕਹਿੰਦੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਹਾਂ।

And in English, there are lots of  common words with silent letters.

There were quite a few words containing  silent letters that Maria mispronounced.

First, we had the word ‘talk’.

Then we had ‘cupboard’.

ਉਦੋਂ ਸਾਡੇ ਕੋਲ 'ਅਲਮਾਰੀ' ਸੀ।

The ‘P’ in ‘cupboard’ is silent.

'ਅਲਮਾਰੀ' ਵਿੱਚ 'ਪੀ' ਚੁੱਪ ਹੈ।

This is the spelling and this is  the pronunciation – ‘cupboard’.

ਇਹ ਸ਼ਬਦ-ਜੋੜ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਇਹ ਉਚਾਰਣ ਹੈ - 'ਅਲਮਾਰੀ'।

Next was ‘know’.

ਅੱਗੇ 'ਪਤਾ' ਸੀ।

‘Know’ has a silent ‘K’ at the beginning.

'ਜਾਣੋ' ਦੇ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਵਿੱਚ ਇੱਕ ਚੁੱਪ 'ਕੇ' ਹੈ।

Now, if a word begins with ‘K’ and then  ‘N’ it’s common for that ‘K’ to be silent.

ਹੁਣ, ਜੇਕਰ ਕੋਈ ਸ਼ਬਦ 'K' ਅਤੇ ਫਿਰ 'N' ਨਾਲ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਤਾਂ ਉਸ 'K' ਦਾ ਚੁੱਪ ਰਹਿਣਾ ਆਮ ਗੱਲ ਹੈ।

So, if you see ‘KN’ just ignore the ‘K’.

ਇਸ ਲਈ, ਜੇਕਰ ਤੁਸੀਂ 'KN' ਦੇਖਦੇ ਹੋ ਤਾਂ ਸਿਰਫ਼ 'K' ਨੂੰ ਨਜ਼ਰਅੰਦਾਜ਼ ਕਰੋ।

Don’t worry if you didn’t know - as a teacher, I  hear my students say this word incorrectly a lot.

ਚਿੰਤਾ ਨਾ ਕਰੋ ਜੇਕਰ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਣਦੇ - ਇੱਕ ਅਧਿਆਪਕ ਦੇ ਰੂਪ ਵਿੱਚ, ਮੈਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਵਿਦਿਆਰਥੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਇਸ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਨੂੰ ਬਹੁਤ ਗਲਤ ਬੋਲਦੇ ਸੁਣਿਆ ਹੈ।

It’s a common mispronunciation so don’t stress.

And to be ‘in debt’ means to owe a lot of money.

Another word mispronounced was ‘environment’.

“I can’t really talk in this environment.”

“ਮੈਂ ਇਸ ਮਾਹੌਲ ਵਿਚ ਸੱਚਮੁੱਚ ਗੱਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰ ਸਕਦਾ।”

It has a silent ‘N’ just after the ‘O’.

In the dictionary it will sometimes tell you  that ‘N’ is pronounced, but in reality, it isn’t.
