Now, today we’re looking at some silent letters.

अब, आज हम कुछ मौन अक्षरों को देख रहे हैं।

These are letters that we write but we don’t say.

ये वो खत हैं जो हम लिखते तो हैं पर कहते नहीं।

And in English, there are lots of  common words with silent letters.

और अंग्रेजी में साइलेंट अक्षरों के साथ बहुत सारे सामान्य शब्द हैं।

So other than the ones I have already mentioned,

There were quite a few words containing  silent letters that Maria mispronounced.

Ok, so, let’s take a look at the  words containing silent letters.

First, we had the word ‘talk’.

“Hi! I can’t really talk right now.”

‘Talk’ has a silent ‘L’.

Next, we had ‘climb’.

The ‘P’ in ‘cupboard’ is silent.

'अलमारी' में 'प' मौन है।

This is the spelling and this is  the pronunciation – ‘cupboard’.

यह वर्तनी है और यह उच्चारण है - 'अलमारी'।

‘Cupboard’.

'अलमारी'।

Next was ‘know’.

अगला 'पता' था।

“I know. I know.”

‘Know’ has a silent ‘K’ at the beginning.

'पता' के प्रारंभ में मौन 'क' होता है।

Now, if a word begins with ‘K’ and then  ‘N’ it’s common for that ‘K’ to be silent.

अब, यदि कोई शब्द 'के' से शुरू होता है और फिर 'एन' उस 'के' के लिए चुप होना आम बात है।

So, if you see ‘KN’ just ignore the ‘K’.

Then we had ‘debt’.

Don’t worry if you didn’t know - as a teacher, I  hear my students say this word incorrectly a lot.

It’s a common mispronunciation so don’t stress.

'उत्तर' में मौन 'W' है।

‘Listen’ was another one.

'सुनो' एक और था।

"सुनो ..."

‘Listen’ has a silent ‘T’.

'सुनो' में एक मौन 'टी' है।

‘Listen’.

'बात सुनो'।

Not ‘lisTen’, but ‘listen’.

'लिसटेन' नहीं, बल्कि 'सुनो'।

Another word mispronounced was ‘environment’.

एक और गलत उच्चारण किया गया शब्द था 'पर्यावरण'।

“I can’t really talk in this environment.”

"मैं वास्तव में इस माहौल में बात नहीं कर सकता।"

It has a silent ‘N’ just after the ‘O’.

इसमें 'O' के ठीक बाद एक साइलेंट 'N' होता है।

‘Environment’.

'पर्यावरण'।

In the dictionary it will sometimes tell you  that ‘N’ is pronounced, but in reality, it isn’t.

शब्दकोश में यह कभी-कभी आपको बताएगा कि 'एन' का उच्चारण किया जाता है, लेकिन वास्तव में ऐसा नहीं है।

So don’t say ‘EnvirONment’.

Now, both ‘knock’ and ‘know’ have the  same spelling/pronunciation pattern.
