In everyday speech, there will be moments when you need information.

The action of asking something is common

when a person needs or requires information fast.

A direct question can be a request or an inquiry.

ਇੱਕ ਸਿੱਧਾ ਸਵਾਲ ਇੱਕ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਜਾਂ ਇੱਕ ਪੁੱਛਗਿੱਛ ਹੋ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ।

A request is often made in the form of a question.

ਇੱਕ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਅਕਸਰ ਇੱਕ ਸਵਾਲ ਦੇ ਰੂਪ ਵਿੱਚ ਕੀਤੀ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ।

“May I open a window?”

“Can I borrow your pen?”

“Is it possible to see you tomorrow?”

"ਕੀ ਤੁਹਾਨੂੰ ਕੱਲ੍ਹ ਮਿਲਣਾ ਸੰਭਵ ਹੈ?"

All those questions are requests.

ਉਹ ਸਾਰੇ ਸਵਾਲ ਬੇਨਤੀਆਂ ਹਨ।

One person is asking another for a direct answer

ਇੱਕ ਵਿਅਕਤੀ ਕਿਸੇ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਦਾ

to a request.

ਸਿੱਧਾ ਜਵਾਬ ਮੰਗ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ

A question can be in the form

। ਇੱਕ ਸਵਾਲ

of asking for information.

ਜਾਣਕਾਰੀ ਮੰਗਣ ਦੇ ਰੂਪ ਵਿੱਚ ਹੋ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ।

A direct form of question is described as interrogative.

ਸਵਾਲ ਦੇ ਸਿੱਧੇ ਰੂਪ ਨੂੰ ਪੁੱਛਗਿੱਛ ਦੇ ਰੂਪ ਵਿੱਚ ਦਰਸਾਇਆ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ।

For example; asking for a reason why a person did something.

ਉਦਾਹਰਣ ਲਈ; ਇੱਕ ਕਾਰਨ ਪੁੱਛਣਾ ਕਿ ਇੱਕ ਵਿਅਕਤੀ ਨੇ ਕੁਝ ਕਿਉਂ ਕੀਤਾ।

When asking someone where they were at a certain time is interrogative.

ਜਦੋਂ ਕਿਸੇ ਨੂੰ ਪੁੱਛਣਾ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਉਹ ਇੱਕ ਨਿਸ਼ਚਿਤ ਸਮੇਂ 'ਤੇ ਕਿੱਥੇ ਸਨ, ਪੁੱਛ-ਗਿੱਛ ਹੈ।

“Where were you last night?”

"ਤੁਸੀਂ ਕੱਲ ਰਾਤ ਕਿੱਥੇ ਸੀ?"

“What have you done with my money?”

"ਤੁਸੀਂ ਮੇਰੇ ਪੈਸਿਆਂ ਦਾ ਕੀ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੈ?"

“Where did you hide the treasure?”

"ਤੁਸੀਂ ਖਜ਼ਾਨਾ ਕਿੱਥੇ ਲੁਕਾਇਆ ਸੀ?"

To demand an answer is to ask an interrogative question.

ਇੱਕ ਜਵਾਬ ਮੰਗਣਾ ਇੱਕ ਪੁੱਛਗਿੱਛ ਸਵਾਲ ਪੁੱਛਣਾ ਹੈ।

Any sentence Using ‘What’,

'ਕੀ',

‘Why’, ‘How’, ‘Who’, ‘When’...

'ਕਿਉਂ', 'ਕਿਵੇਂ', 'ਕੌਣ', 'ਕਦੋਂ'...

‘Where’, can be described as interrogative.

'ਕਿੱਥੇ' ਦੀ ਵਰਤੋਂ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਕਿਸੇ ਵੀ ਵਾਕ ਨੂੰ ਪੁੱਛਗਿੱਛ ਦੇ ਤੌਰ 'ਤੇ ਵਰਣਨ ਕੀਤਾ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ।

This is very different from a request,

ਇਹ ਇੱਕ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਤੋਂ ਬਹੁਤ ਵੱਖਰਾ ਹੈ,

which is seen as non interrogative.

ਜਿਸਨੂੰ ਗੈਰ ਪੁੱਛਗਿੱਛ ਦੇ ਤੌਰ ਤੇ ਦੇਖਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।

You might say that a request is a polite way of demanding something.

ਤੁਸੀਂ ਕਹਿ ਸਕਦੇ ਹੋ ਕਿ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਕਿਸੇ ਚੀਜ਼ ਦੀ ਮੰਗ ਕਰਨ ਦਾ ਇੱਕ ਨਿਮਰ ਢੰਗ ਹੈ।

‘May I?’

'ਕੀ ਮੈਂ?'

‘Could you?’ ‘Will you?’

'ਕੀ ਤੁਸੀ?' 'ਕੀ ਤੁਸੀਂ?'

‘Can I?’

'ਕੀ ਮੈਂ ਕਰ ਸਕਦਾ ਹਾਂ?'

‘Is it okay if...?’

'ਕੀ ਇਹ ਠੀਕ ਹੈ ਜੇ...?'

Of course,

ਬੇਸ਼ੱਕ,

any question needs an answer.

ਕਿਸੇ ਵੀ ਸਵਾਲ ਦਾ ਜਵਾਬ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ.

But sometimes the answer does not come straight away.

ਪਰ ਕਈ ਵਾਰ ਜਵਾਬ ਸਿੱਧਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਉਂਦਾ।

You might have to wait for a reply.

ਤੁਹਾਨੂੰ ਜਵਾਬ ਲਈ ਉਡੀਕ ਕਰਨੀ ਪੈ ਸਕਦੀ ਹੈ।

The answer is... ‘reply’

ਜਵਾਬ ਹੈ... 'ਜਵਾਬ'

‘respond’ (the response) ‘retort’...

'ਜਵਾਬ' (ਜਵਾਬ) 'ਮੁਲਤਵੀ'...

Act in response. (To reply)

ਜਵਾਬ ਵਿੱਚ ਕਾਰਵਾਈ ਕਰੋ। (ਜਵਾਬ ਦੇਣ ਲਈ)

The person being asked will give their reply.

ਜਿਸ ਵਿਅਕਤੀ ਨੂੰ ਪੁੱਛਿਆ ਜਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਆਪਣਾ ਜਵਾਬ ਦੇਵੇਗਾ।

The words reply and answer can

ਜਵਾਬ ਅਤੇ ਜਵਾਬ ਸ਼ਬਦ

be used as given or received.

ਦਿੱਤੇ ਜਾਂ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕੀਤੇ ਵਜੋਂ ਵਰਤੇ ਜਾ ਸਕਦੇ ਹਨ।

You ask...

ਤੁਸੀਂ ਪੁੱਛੋ...

I reply.

ਮੈਂ ਜਵਾਬ ਦਿੰਦਾ ਹਾਂ।

I reply to your question.

ਮੈਂ ਤੁਹਾਡੇ ਸਵਾਲ ਦਾ ਜਵਾਬ ਦਿੰਦਾ ਹਾਂ।

You receive my reply.

ਤੁਸੀਂ ਮੇਰਾ ਜਵਾਬ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰੋ।

The person asking will wait for a reply.

ਪੁੱਛਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਵਿਅਕਤੀ ਜਵਾਬ ਦੀ ਉਡੀਕ ਕਰੇਗਾ।

There might be a time

ਅਜਿਹਾ ਸਮਾਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ

when a question is put forward without needing a response or reply.

ਜਦੋਂ ਕੋਈ ਸਵਾਲ ਜਵਾਬ ਜਾਂ ਜਵਾਬ ਦੀ ਲੋੜ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾਂ ਅੱਗੇ ਰੱਖਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।

This is a rhetorical question.

ਇਹ ਇੱਕ ਅਲੰਕਾਰਿਕ ਸਵਾਲ ਹੈ।

Something said in the form of a question,

ਇੱਕ ਸਵਾਲ ਦੇ ਰੂਪ ਵਿੱਚ ਕੁਝ ਕਿਹਾ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ,

but not requiring an answer is rhetorical.

ਪਰ ਜਵਾਬ ਦੀ ਲੋੜ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ ਅਲੰਕਾਰਿਕ ਹੈ।

“Could this day get any worse?”

"ਕੀ ਇਹ ਦਿਨ ਹੋਰ ਵੀ ਮਾੜਾ ਹੋ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ?"

“Why do bad things always happen to me?”

"ਮੇਰੇ ਨਾਲ ਹਮੇਸ਼ਾ ਬੁਰੀਆਂ ਗੱਲਾਂ ਕਿਉਂ ਹੁੰਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ?"

“Where did my life go wrong?”

"ਮੇਰੀ ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਕਿੱਥੇ ਗਲਤ ਹੋ ਗਈ?"

“Was my performance really that bad?”

"ਕੀ ਮੇਰਾ ਪ੍ਰਦਰਸ਼ਨ ਸੱਚਮੁੱਚ ਇੰਨਾ ਮਾੜਾ ਸੀ?"

“Where do I go from here?”

"ਮੈਂ ਇੱਥੋਂ ਕਿੱਥੇ ਜਾਵਾਂ?"

The rhetorical statement is normally used

ਅਲੰਕਾਰਿਕ ਬਿਆਨ ਆਮ ਤੌਰ 'ਤੇ ਉਦੋਂ ਵਰਤਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ

when a moment of annoyance or frustration takes place.

ਜਦੋਂ ਗੁੱਸਾ ਜਾਂ ਨਿਰਾਸ਼ਾ ਦਾ ਪਲ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ।

You ask a question, sometimes to yourself.

ਤੁਸੀਂ ਇੱਕ ਸਵਾਲ ਪੁੱਛਦੇ ਹੋ, ਕਈ ਵਾਰ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ.

There is no need for an answer.

ਜਵਾਬ ਦੀ ਲੋੜ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ।

It is a rhetorical question.

ਇਹ ਇੱਕ ਅਲੰਕਾਰਿਕ ਸਵਾਲ ਹੈ।

Before asking a question,

ਕੋਈ ਸਵਾਲ ਪੁੱਛਣ ਤੋਂ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ,

you might say, ‘Can I ask you something?’

ਤੁਸੀਂ ਕਹਿ ਸਕਦੇ ਹੋ, 'ਕੀ ਮੈਂ ਤੁਹਾਨੂੰ ਕੁਝ ਪੁੱਛ ਸਕਦਾ ਹਾਂ?'

Which itself is a request.

ਜੋ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਵਿੱਚ ਇੱਕ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਹੈ।

Sometimes more than one answer is required or needed.

ਕਈ ਵਾਰ ਇੱਕ ਤੋਂ ਵੱਧ ਜਵਾਬਾਂ ਦੀ ਲੋੜ ਜਾਂ ਲੋੜ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ।

You might need more information in the answer.

ਤੁਹਾਨੂੰ ਜਵਾਬ ਵਿੱਚ ਹੋਰ ਜਾਣਕਾਰੀ ਦੀ ਲੋੜ ਹੋ ਸਕਦੀ ਹੈ।

You might need to ask another question.

ਤੁਹਾਨੂੰ ਇੱਕ ਹੋਰ ਸਵਾਲ ਪੁੱਛਣ ਦੀ ਲੋੜ ਹੋ ਸਕਦੀ ਹੈ।

This is often described as a follow-up question.

ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਅਕਸਰ ਇੱਕ ਫਾਲੋ-ਅੱਪ ਸਵਾਲ ਵਜੋਂ ਦਰਸਾਇਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।

A question can be described as a query.

ਇੱਕ ਸਵਾਲ ਨੂੰ ਇੱਕ ਸਵਾਲ ਵਜੋਂ ਦਰਸਾਇਆ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ।

A general question about something is a query.

ਕਿਸੇ ਚੀਜ਼ ਬਾਰੇ ਇੱਕ ਆਮ ਸਵਾਲ ਇੱਕ ਪੁੱਛਗਿੱਛ ਹੈ।

One problem with asking a question is waiting for the reply.

ਇੱਕ ਸਵਾਲ ਪੁੱਛਣ ਵਿੱਚ ਇੱਕ ਸਮੱਸਿਆ ਜਵਾਬ ਦੀ ਉਡੀਕ ਕਰ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ।

You might not get the response that you wanted.

ਹੋ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਤੁਹਾਨੂੰ ਉਹ ਜਵਾਬ ਨਾ ਮਿਲੇ ਜੋ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਚਾਹੁੰਦੇ ਸੀ।

The reply might be negative.

ਜਵਾਬ ਨਕਾਰਾਤਮਕ ਹੋ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ।

“Will you marry me?”

"ਕੀ ਤਸੀ ਮੇਰੇ ਨਾਲ ਵਿਆਹ ਕਰੋਗੇ?"

“How well did I do?”

"ਮੈਂ ਕਿੰਨਾ ਚੰਗਾ ਕੀਤਾ?"

“Have I got the job?”

"ਕੀ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਨੌਕਰੀ ਮਿਲ ਗਈ ਹੈ?"

“Do you still love me?”

"ਕੀ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਅਜੇ ਵੀ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਪਿਆਰ ਕਰਦੇ ਹੋ?"

So the next time you ask a question,

ਇਸ ਲਈ ਅਗਲੀ ਵਾਰ ਜਦੋਂ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਕੋਈ ਸਵਾਲ ਪੁੱਛਦੇ ਹੋ, ਤਾਂ

remember to be ready for the response.

ਜਵਾਬ ਲਈ ਤਿਆਰ ਰਹਿਣਾ ਯਾਦ ਰੱਖੋ।

For it might not be the answer...

ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਇਹ ਜਵਾਬ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਦਾ...

you were hoping for.

ਤੁਸੀਂ ਉਮੀਦ ਕਰ ਰਹੇ ਸੀ।
