Learn English phrases - 'READ THE SMALL PRINT' / 'READ BETWEEN THE LINES' - with Mr Duncan

Today’s short lesson is here to do both of those things.

We will look at two interesting phrases

سنلقي نظرة على عبارتين مثيرتين للاهتمام

that are used in the English language, both relating to the word ‘read’.

يتم استخدامهما في اللغة الإنجليزية، وكلاهما يتعلق بكلمة "قراءة".

As a verb, the word ‘read’ simply means to follow words on a piece of paper

كفعل، تعني كلمة "قراءة" ببساطة متابعة الكلمات الموجودة على قطعة من الورق

that have been written or printed in some way.

التي تمت كتابتها أو طباعتها بطريقة ما.

To look at something whilst following or observing can also be described as reading.

النظر إلى شيء ما أثناء المتابعة أو المراقبة يمكن وصفه أيضًا بالقراءة.

You might read a book.

قد تقرأ كتابا.

You might read some text that has been written down.

قد تقرأ بعض النصوص التي تم كتابتها.

You can read information in the form of numbers.

يمكنك قراءة المعلومات في شكل أرقام.

Figures and statistics can also be read.

ويمكن أيضا قراءة الأرقام والإحصائيات.

Reading is part of general comprehension.

القراءة جزء من الفهم العام.

You can listen to something being said,

يمكنك الاستماع إلى شيء يقال،

or you can read something that has been written down.

أو يمكنك قراءة شيء مكتوب.

The first phrase I want to look at is one we often use

العبارة الأولى التي أريد إلقاء نظرة عليها هي العبارة التي نستخدمها غالبًا

before signing a contract or some other type of binding document.

قبل التوقيع على عقد أو أي نوع آخر من المستندات الملزمة.

The phrase is ‘always read the small print’.

العبارة هي "اقرأ دائمًا الحروف الصغيرة".

This particular phrase serves as a very good piece of advice.

هذه العبارة بالذات بمثابة نصيحة جيدة جدًا.

Before you go ahead and agree to anything that has been presented to you

قبل المضي قدمًا والموافقة على أي شيء تم تقديمه لك

in the form of a contract, you must first read the small print.

في شكل عقد، يجب عليك أولاً قراءة النسخة المطبوعة الصغيرة.

In this phrase,

في هذه العبارة

we are saying that you must study everything

نقول أنه يجب عليك دراسة كل

that has been written in the contract.

ما هو مكتوب في العقد.

You must look closely at all of the words and each clause one by one.

يجب عليك أن تنظر عن كثب إلى كل الكلمات وكل جملة واحدة تلو الأخرى.

In this phrase, the small print refers to the tiny details

في هذه العبارة، تشير التفاصيل الصغيرة إلى التفاصيل الصغيرة

that may in the future create problems for those names that are on the contract.

التي قد تخلق مشاكل في المستقبل لتلك الأسماء الموجودة في العقد.

Before agreeing to anything, you must read the small print.

قبل الموافقة على أي شيء، يجب عليك قراءة المطبوعة الصغيرة.

Make sure you understand all of the details contained in the contract

تأكد من أنك تفهم كافة التفاصيل الواردة في العقد

before signing your name... at the bottom.

قبل توقيع اسمك... في الأسفل.

Another phrase that uses the word ‘read’ is ‘read between the lines’.

العبارة الأخرى التي تستخدم كلمة "اقرأ" هي "اقرأ بين السطور".

This particular phrase refers to the action

تشير هذه العبارة بالذات إلى عملية

of looking closely for the hidden meanings contained within something.

البحث عن كثب عن المعاني الخفية الموجودة داخل شيء ما.

This particular phrase is often used figuratively

غالبًا ما تُستخدم هذه العبارة تحديدًا مجازيًا

as a way of expressing the action, of trying to work out what was actually said,

كوسيلة للتعبير عن الفعل، ومحاولة فهم ما قيل بالفعل،

and whether or not there is some hidden meaning contained within.

وما إذا كان هناك بعض المعنى الخفي الموجود بداخلها أم لا.

A person might read between the lines of what has been said to them.

وقد يقرأ الإنسان ما بين السطور مما قيل له.

An innocent statement or question might have some hidden agenda.

قد يكون لبيان أو سؤال بريء بعض الأجندة الخفية.

There might be more to what was said.

وقد يكون هناك المزيد مما قيل.

We might analyse the actions of someone by reading between the lines.

قد نقوم بتحليل تصرفات شخص ما من خلال القراءة بين السطور.

One is trying to work out whether what was said or done is true or not.

يحاول المرء معرفة ما إذا كان ما قيل أو تم فعله صحيحًا أم لا.

It is possible to be misled by what a person expresses in any particular moment.

من الممكن أن ينخدع بما يعبر عنه الإنسان في أي لحظة معينة.

Only later do we stop to think about that moment.

في وقت لاحق فقط نتوقف عن التفكير في تلك اللحظة.

We analyse what was said.

نحن نحلل ما قيل.

We look for some hidden meaning.

نحن نبحث عن بعض المعنى الخفي.

We will read between the lines.

سنقرأ ما بين السطور.

Of course, for most of the time

وبطبيعة الحال، في معظم الأوقات

there is nothing being hidden or withheld.

لا يوجد شيء مخفي أو محجوب.

But human nature often causes us to be a little suspicious from time to time.

لكن الطبيعة البشرية غالبًا ما تجعلنا نتشكك قليلاً من وقت لآخر.

Sometimes we can't help ourselves.

في بعض الأحيان لا نستطيع أن نساعد أنفسنا.

We must read between the lines.

وعلينا أن نقرأ ما بين السطور.

You might describe these phrases as ‘words of caution’.

A piece of advice or wisdom passed from one person to another

النصيحة أو الحكمة التي تنتقل من شخص إلى آخر

can be described as a word of caution.
