I speak to my beautiful and brilliant cousin Orna,

In normal times, we talk about which cousin is the bigger idiot,

That's actually my favorite book of his,

So he was relentless in talking about how horrible it was to be alive.

And he did this until the age of 85, when he died, which is incredibly ironic.

but in normal times, I have a routine.

In the early morning hours, with a strong cup of coffee,

I read the obituaries.

The infusion of coffee and biography affords me a way to reflect.

And it might seem too soon in the day to start with such a tremendous topic.

But it is a jolt to action

And maybe with the information from the Webb telescope,

Her family fled the pogroms of Belarus for Palestine in the 1930s,

That is what happens when we speak,

it is inevitable.

And if we examine this notion to its ultimate conclusion,

obviously the answer is no more dinner parties.

“Wait,” you say, “None at all?

What is wrong with that?

Nothing, absolutely nothing.

I used to be ashamed of my inconsistencies.

Now I revel in them.

To have meaningful work is a salvation,

and one of my greatest pleasures is to stare at things,

I could not live without both painting and writing,

ပန်းချီဆွဲတာ၊စာရေးတာ နှစ်ခုလုံးမပါဘဲ အသက်မရှင်သန်နိုင်ဘူး၊

and one supports the other in obvious ways.

In both, the struggle is invisible but palpable.

I say the tears are invisible, but they're definitely there.

How do I deal with never good enough?

Easy.

“Self-loathing” is a truly ugly expression,

but it is an unavoidable condition.

The crushing anxiety of not getting it right,

of not finding the truth,

of feeling worthless.

ဖိစီးနေတဲ့ ပူပန်မှုပါ။

If you look at it one way,

ဒါကို တခြားနည်းနဲ့ ကြည့်ရင်၊

it could be helpful to have doubt and dismay.

သံသယနဲ့ တုန်လှုပ်မှုရှိဖို့ အထောက်အကူဖြစ်နိုင်တယ်။

Plowing through the muck of despair

စိတ်ပျက်အားလျော့မှု အညစ်အကြေးကို

leads to a sense of humanism and perseverance.

ကျော်ဖြတ်တာက မနုဿဝါဒနဲ့ ဇွဲရှိမှု သဘောတစ်ခုကို ဖြစ်စေတာပါ။

On the other hand,

တစ်ဖက်မှာတော့

how absurd and tedious to be in the grips of self-doubt.

ကိုယ့်ကိုယ်ကိုယ် သံသယဝင်တာရဲ့ဆုပ်ကိုင်မှု တွေထဲမှာ အဓိပ္ပါယ်မဲ့ပြီး ငြီးငွေ့စရာပါ။

What a waste of time, that insidious insecurity.

ဖြုန်းတီးလိုက်တဲ့ အချိန်တွေ၊ ဒီလောက်စဉ်းလဲတဲ့ မလုံခြုံမှု။

What of finding your work and your place on Earth?

ကမ္ဘာမြေပေါ်မှာ ကိုယ့်ရဲ့အလုပ်နဲ့ ကိုယ့်နေရာကို ရှာတာကကော။

What of self-confidence?

ကိုယ့်ကိုယ်ကိုယ် ယုံကြည်မှုကကော။

What of the bliss of finding the right color or the right word?

အရောင်မှနန် ဒါမှမဟုတ် စကားလုံးမှန်ကို ရှာတွေ့တဲ့ အတိသုခကကော။

What of sheer joy?

လွန်ကဲတဲ့ ဝမ်းမြောက်မှုလား။

What is wrong with that?

ဒါနဲ့ပတ်သက်ပြီး ဘာမှားနေလဲ။

Nothing, absolutely nothing.

ဘာမှမမှားဘူး။ လုံးဝ မမှားဘူး။

After reading the obituaries, I go for a walk,

နာရေးသတင်းတွေ ဖတ်ပြီးတဲ့အခါ၊ ကျွန်မ လမ်းလျှောက်ထွက်တယ်၊

which is a salvation.

ဒါက ကယ်တင်ခြင်းတစ်ခုပဲလေ။

Here is Robert Walser,

who wrote one of my favorite books called "The Walk,"

Walking and not thinking is the favorite state.

An empty brain, which I call my best brain,

is the only way to have any ideas, to allow surprises to appear.

“Solvitur ambulando,” they thought of this before I did, long ago.

Walking solves all problems without trying.

One day at a farmers market,

I saw a woman carrying an absolutely gigantic cabbage.

အမျိုးသမီးတစ်ယောက်က ကြီးပေ့ဆိုတဲ့ ဂေါ်ဖီထုပ်တစ်ထုပ် သယ်လာတာကို တွေ့လိုက်တယ်။

When I asked to photograph her, she looked really annoyed.

And for some reason, I was so delighted by her crankiness.

Let's just say what we feel.

It made me think of all the things women hold,

literally and metaphorically.

Balloons and grudges.

ပူဖောင်းတွေနဲ့ အာဃာတွေပေါ့။

And heavy loads and cabbages.

And stupendous love and courage.

အံ့မခန်း ချစ်မေတ္တာနဲ့ ရဲရင့်မှုတွေပေါ့။

And the pink ukulele under a cherry tree.

ချယ်ရီပင်တစ်ပင်အောက်က ပန်းရောင် ယူကူလီလေ။

And from this a book was formed:

ဒါက " Women Holding Things " ဆိုတဲ့

“Women Holding Things”.

စာအုပ်တစ်အုပ်ကနေ ပုံဖော်ထားတာပါ။

What do women hold?

အမျိုးသမီးတွေ ဘာကို ဆုပ်ကိုင်ကြလဲ။

The home and the family

အိမ်နဲ့ မိသားစု၊

and the children and the food.

ကလေးတွေနဲ့ အစားအစာတွေပေါ့။

The friendships, the work,

ခင်မင်ရင်းနှီးမှု၊ အလုပ်၊

the work of the world and the work of being human,

လောက လုပ်ဖွယ်ဆောင်တာ၊ လူသားဖြစ်ခြင်းရဲ့ အလုပ်၊

the memories and the troubles and the sorrows

အောက်မေ့ရာတွေ၊ သောကတွေ၊ ဝမ်းနည်းမှုတွေ၊

and the triumphs and the love.

အောင်ပွဲတွေ၊ မေတ္တာတွေပါ။

Men do as well, but not quite in the same way.

အမျိုးသားတွေလည်း လုပ်ကြပေမဲ့၊ အလားတူတော့ မဟုတ်ဘူး။

Sometimes when I'm feeling particularly happy or content,

တစ်ခါတလေ အထူး ပျော်ရွှင်တာ ဒါမှမဟုတ် အားရကျေနပ်တယ်လို့ ခံစားရတဲ့အခါ

I think I can provide sustenance for legions of human beings.

I can hold the entire world in my arms.

Other times, I can barely cross the room.

And I drop my arms, frozen.

There is never an end to holding,

and certainly there is often the feeling of never doing enough.

ဘယ်တော့မှ ကျေနပ်လောက်အောင် မလုပ်နိုင်ဘူး ဆိုတဲ့ ခံစားချက်တွေက အသေအချာပါ။

And then there is the next day and the next day.

ဒီနောက်တစ်နေ့နဲ့ နောက်နေ့၊ နောက်နေ့တွေလည်း ရှိသေးတယ်။

And one holds on.

တစ်ယောက်က ဆုပ်ကိုင်ထားတယ်။

I dreamt

အခြားတစ်ယောက်က

someone else was stupid for a change.

ပြောင်းလဲတာအတွက် မိုက်မဲတယ်လို့ ကျွန်မ အိပ်မက်မက်တယ်။

Albeit a fleeting one.

A few years ago,

I did an illustrated edition

တုမရနိုင်တဲ့ စတိန်း ရေးသားတဲ့

of "The Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas,"

"The Autobiography of Alice B. Tokla"

written by the inimitable Gertrude Stein.

သရုပ်ဖော် ပုံနှိပ်မူတစ်အုပ် ကျွန်မ လုပ်ခဲ့တယ်။

Alice and Gertrude lived a singular life,

အဲလစ်နဲ့ ဂါးထရုဒ်တို့ဟာ ပြင်းထန်တဲ့ ဖန်တီးနိုင်စွမ်း၊

one of intense creativity and equally intense domesticity,

အလားတူ ပြင်းထန်တဲ့ မိသားစုဘဝတစ်ခုဖြစ်တဲ့ တစ်ယောက်မရှိရင်၊ တစ်ယောက် မဖြစ်တည်နိုင်တဲ့

and one could not exist without the other.

တစ်မူထူးတဲ့ ဘဝမှာ နေထိုင်ခဲ့ကြတယ်။

That, to me, is the ideal of life, family and work.

ဒါက ကျွန်မအတွက်တော့ ဘဝ၊ မိသားစုနဲ့ အလုပ်ရဲ့ စံနမူနာပါ။

My son Alex and I made a short film called "My Name is Alice B. Toklas,"

သား အဲလက်စ်နဲ့ ကျွန်မ My Name is Alice B. Toklas ဆိုတဲ့ရုပ်ရှင်တိုတစ်ကားရိုက်ခဲ့တယ်၊

and for a brief day

တိုတောင်းတဲ့ တစ်နေ့တာအတွက်

I became Alice with two extra noses on my nose.

oh, you know, Picasso, he was impossible.
