He says many of those kids have dropped out of school,

Ravi has appealed to the company for years.

There are almost always laws on the books that would protect these people,

There are environmental laws that would protect these people,

Law is supposed to be the difference

between a society ruled by the most powerful

That's why I told my grandmother 20 years ago

But grandma's right, in a way.

Something about law and lawyers has gone wrong.

We lawyers are usually expensive, first of all,

and we tend to focus on formal court channels

Law is like riot gear on a police officer.

It's intimidating and impenetrable,

If we're going to make justice a reality for everyone,

Community legal workers,

Community paralegals saved my own relationship to law.

After about a year in law school, I almost dropped out.

2013, he did reach the gates of that factory

Those applications started turning the creaky wheels of enforcement.

A pollution officer came for a site inspection,

Khadija tried off and on to get an ID for eight years, without success.

Then she met a paralegal working in her community

In New York, a new crew of paralegals --

they're called Access to Justice Navigators --

helps people to understand housing law and to advocate for themselves.

Normally in New York,

one out of nine tenants brought to housing court

Researchers took a look at 150 cases

This is one he sent to Kush in May.

Ravi says the air is still unbreathable.

At one point this year, Ravi went on hunger strike.

This transformation in the relationship between people and law

is the right thing to do.

It's also essential for overcoming

all of the other great challenges of our times.

We are not going to avert environmental collapse

I called Ravi before coming here to ask permission to share his story.

By that I think he means fight using law rather than guns.

Maybe not today, maybe not this year, maybe not in five years,

ဒီနေ့၊ ဒီနှစ်၊ ငါးနှစ်အတွင်း မဖြစ်နိုင်ပေမဲ့

but find justice.

တရားမျှတမှုကို ရှာပါ။

If this guy, whose entire community is being poisoned every single day,

who was ready to take his own life --

then the world can't give up either.

Ultimately, what Ravi calls "fighting with paper"

is about forging a deeper version of democracy

in which we the people,

requires all of us.

Vivek Maru: Yeah. Anybody remember the Millennium Development Goals?

Vivek Maru: ဟုတ်တယ်၊ "ထောင်စုနှစ်ရည်မှန်းချက်" ကို မှတ်မိကြလား။

They were adopted in 2000 by the UN and governments around the world,

နှစ် ၂၀၀၀ တုန်းက UN နဲ့ တစ်ကမ္ဘာလုံးက အစိုးရတွေ ကျင့်သုံးခဲ့ကြပြီး

and they were for essential, laudable things.

It was reduce child mortality by two thirds, cut hunger in half,

and we have made progress during the 15 years

And so when the debate started about the next development framework,

to argue that access to justice and legal empowerment

should be a part of that new framework.

And there was a lot of resistance.

Those things are more political, more contentious than the other ones,

so we didn't know until the night before whether it was going to come through.

We squeaked by.

The 16th out of 17 goals commits to access to justice for all,

which is a big deal.

Here's the scandal, though.

The day the goals were adopted,

most of them were accompanied by big commitments:

and the British government for nutrition;

25 billion in public-private financing for health care for women and children.

On access to justice, we had the words on the paper,

but nobody pledged a penny,

and so that is the opportunity and the challenge that we face right now.

ဒီတော့ ဒါက အခု ကျွန်တော်တို့ ရင်ဆိုင်ရတဲ့ အခွင်အလမ်းနဲ့ စိန်ခေါ်မှုပါ။

The world recognizes more than ever before

ကမ္ဘာကြီးက အရင်ထက်ပို အသိအမှတ်ပြုတာက

that you can't have development without justice,

တရားမျှတမှုမရှိပဲ တိုးတက်မှုမရှိနိုင်ဘူး၊

that people can't improve their lives if they can't exercise their rights,

ဒီရပိုင်ခွင့်တွေ မကျင့်သုံးနိုင်ရင် လူတွေ သူတို့ဘဝတွေ တိုးတက်အောင် မလုပ်နိုင်ဘူး။

and what we need to do now is turn that rhetoric,

အခုသိဖို့လိုတာက ဒီလေလုံးထွားတာကို ပြောင်းဖို့၊

turn that principle, into reality.

ဒီမူတွေကို လက်တွေအဖြစ်ပြောင်းဖို့ပါ။

KK: How can we help? What can people in this room do?

I would say three things.

ကျွန်တော် သုံးခုပြောမယ်။

One is invest.

တစ်က ရင်နှီးမြှုပ်နှံပါ။

If you have 10 dollars, or a hundred dollars, a million dollars,

သင့်မှာ ၁၀ ဒေါ်လာ၊ ဒေါ်လာ ၁၀၀၊ တစ်သန်း ရှိရင်

consider putting some of it towards grassroots legal empowerment.

တစ်ချို့ကို အခြေခံ ဥပဒေဆိုင်ရာ လုပ်ပိုင်ခွင့်ဆီကို ထည့်ဖို့စဉ်းစား

It's important in its own right

၎င်းကိုယ်ပိုင်လုပ်ပိုင်ခွင့်မှာ

and it's crucial for just about everything else we care about.

အရေးပါကာ ကျွန်တော်တို့ ဂရုထားတဲ့ ကျန်တာအားလုံးအတွက် အရေးပါတယ်။

Number two,

နံပါတ် နှစ်

push your politicians and your governments to make this a public priority.

နိုင်ငံရေးသမားတွေ၊ အစိုးရတွေကို ဒါကို အများ ဦးစားပေးအဖြစ်လုပ်ဖို့တိုက်တွန်းပါ။

Just like health or education, access to justice

ကျန်းမာရေး (သို့) ပညာရေးလိုပဲ တရားမျှတမှုရှိဖို့က

should be one of the things that a government owes its people,

အစိုးရတစ်ရပ်က ၎င်းရဲ့ပြည်သူတွေကို ပေးရတာတွေထဲက တစ်ခုဖြစ်သင့်ပြီ်

and we're nowhere close to that,

ဘယ်မှာမဆို ကျွန်တော်တို့ နီးစပ်တယ်၊

neither in rich countries or poor countries.

ချမ်းသာတဲ့ နိုင်ငံရော၊ ဆင်းရဲတဲ့ နိုင်ငံရောပါ။

Number three is: be a paralegal in your own life.

နံပါတ် သုံးက သင့်ကိုယ်ပိုင်ဘဝမှာ အရံရှေ့နေဖြစ်ပါစေ။

Find an injustice or a problem where you live.

သင်နေတဲ့နေရာမှာ ဖြစ်နေတဲ့မတရားမှု/ ပြဿနာတစ်ခုကို ရှာပါ။

It's not hard to find, if you look.

ကြည့်တတ်ရင် ရှာဖို့ မခက်ပါဘူး၊

Is the river being contaminated,

သင်နေထိုင်ရာမြို့ကို ဖြတ်စီးတဲ့

the one that passes through the city where you live?

မြစ်က ညစ်ပတ်နေလား၊၊

Are there workers getting paid less than minimum wage

အလုပ်သမားတွေဟာ အနည်းဆုံးလုပ်ခထက် နည်းပြီးရနေလား၊

or who are working without safety gear?

(သို့) လုံခြုံရေးကိရိယာ မပါပဲ လုပ်နေလား

Get to know the people most affected,

အထိခိုက်ခံရဆုံးလူတွေကို သိအောင်လုပ်ပြီး

find out what the rules say,

စည်းမျဉ်းက ပြောထားတာကို ရှာဖွေပါ

see if you can use those rules to get a solution.

ဒီစည်းမျဉ်းတွေကို သုံးပြီး အဖြေတစ်ခုရနိုင်လား ကြည့်ပါ။

If it doesn't work, see if you can come together to improve those rules.

အလုပ်မဖြစ်ရင် ဒီစည်းမျဉ်းတွေကို ပိုကောင်းအောင် ဝိုင်းလုပ်နိုင်လား ကြည့်ပါ။

Because if we all start knowing law, using law and shaping law,

အကြောင်းက ကျွန်တော်တို့အားလုံး ဥပဒေ၊ ဥပဒေသုံးခြင်းနဲ့ ပုံဖော်တာ သိလာရင်

then we will be building that deeper version of democracy

ကမ္ဘာကြီးက အသည်းအသန် လိုအပ်နေတယ်လို့ ကျွန်တော် ယုံကြည်တဲ့

that I believe our world desperately needs.
