What is our imagery of cities?

وێناتان چییە بۆ شارەکان؟

When we imagine cities,

کاتێک وێنای شارەکان ئەکەین،

we often imagine it to be something like this.

زۆرجار وا وێنای ئەکەین شتێکی ئاواهی بێت.

But what if what you're looking at is just half a picture,

بەڵام چی ئەبێت ئەگەر ئەوەی سەیری ئەکەیت نیوەی وێنەکە بێت،

but there is a city within the city.

بەڵام شارێک هەیە لەناو شارەکەیا.

This part of the city is often seen as slums,

ئەم بەشەی شارەکە زۆرجار وەک هەژارنشینەکان،

squatters, informal,

نایاساییەکان ناو ئەنرێن و

and people living here are called illegal, informal,

ئەو کەسانەشی تیایا ئەژین پێیان ئەوترێت نایاسایی،

criminals, beneficiaries, supplicants, etc.

تاوانبارەکان، سوودمەندبووەکان و پەنابەرەکان.

But in reality,

بەڵام ڕاستییەکەی،

these are poor people with no choices.

ئەمانە خەڵکە هەژارەکانن کە هیچ چارەی کەیان نییە.

Poverty is a vicious cycle.

هەژاری سوڕێکی خۆکوژە.

If born poor, it can take three or more generations

ئەگەر بە هەژاری لەدایک بیت، دەکرێت سێ نەوە یان زیاتری بوێت

to escape one.

بۆ دەرچوون لێی.

Many are forced in this cycle without choices,

زۆرێک بێ ئەوەی هەڵبژاردنیان هەبێت ئەکەونە ناو سوڕەکەوە،

to live on pavements,

لەسەر شۆستەکان بژین،

along train tracks,

لەسەر هێڵەکانی شەمەندەفەر،

in dumping grounds,

لەژێر زەوییەکان،

along rivers,

لەلای کەنار ڕووبارەکان،

swamps and many such unlivable spaces,

زەلکاوەکان و زۆر شوێنی تری باوەڕپێنەکراویش،

without clean water, toilets or housing.

بەبێ ئاوی پاک، تەوالێت یان خانوو.

But these places are not unfamiliar to me,

بەڵام ئەم شوێنانە نامۆ نین بۆ من،

because since the age of six, I accompanied my father, a doctor,

چونکە هەر لە شەش ساڵییەوە، لەگەڵ باوکمام، کە پزیشک بوو،

who treated patients in the slums of Bombay.

چارەسەری نەخۆشەکانی ئەکرد لە گەڕەکە هەژارنشینەکانی بۆمبای.

Growing up, I would help him carry his bag of medicines

هەر لە منداڵییەوە، یارمەتیم ئەیا بە هەڵگرتنی جانتا دەرمانەکەی

after school lessons --

دوای وانەکانی قوتابخانە ---

I loved doing that.

حەزم لەوە بوو.

Wanting to do something about these habitats,

شتێک بکەم لەبارەی ئەم خوانەوە،

I decided to become an architect.

بڕیارم یا ببم بە تەلارساز.

But quite early on, I realized

بەڵام هەر زوو، درکم بەوە کرد

that the beauty of architecture was only for the rich.

کە جوانی تەلارسازی تەنیا بۆ دەوڵەمەندەکانە.

So I decided to do urban planning

بۆیە بڕیارمدا بچمە ناو پلاندانانی شارەکانەوە و

and joined an NGO in India that works with the urban poor

چومە ڕێکخراوێکی ناحکومی هیندستان کە کار لەسەر گەڕەکە هەژارەکان ئەکات

who organize themselves to access basic services,

ڕێکیان ئەخات بۆ ئەوەی خزمەتگوزاری بنچینەییان بۆ بەردەست بێت،

such as water, sanitation and housing, for the poor living in cities.

وەک ئاو، پاکژی، و خانوو بۆ هەژارەکانی لە شارەکەیا ئەژیان.

Now I spent 10 years of my life in professional education, in learning,

دە ساڵی تەمەنم بەسەربرد لە پەروەردەی پیشەگەری، لە فێربووندا، و

and then five years in unlearning it.

Because I realized

that all my training in architecture, design and planning

failed ground realities.

And this is where I learned the power of choice.

I unlearned many things,

but there are two myths about the poor

that I would like to share that we live with.

The first myth is a perception

یەکەم ئەفسانەیان ئەوەیە

that migration of poor people into cities is a problem.

Is migration really a choice?

ئایا کۆچکردن بەڕاستی هەڵبژاردنێکە؟

asked to those who think of this as a problem,

لەوانەی پرسی کە پێیان وایە ئەمە کێشەیەکە،

"Go ask your grandfather where he came from," she says.

So what do poor people do when they migrate in cities?

کەواتە خەڵکە هەژارەکە چی ئەکەن کاتێک یەنە ناو شارەکانەوە؟

Let me share an example.

با نموونەیەکتان بەمێ.

This is the Mumbai International Airport.

ئەمە فڕۆکەخانەی نێودەوڵەتی مومبایە.

All that you see in blue are large informal settlements around it.

هەموو شینەکانی ئەیبینیت هەمووی شوێنی نیشتەجێبوونی نایاسایی گەورەیە.

Close to 75,000 people live here.

نزیکەی حەفتا و پێنج هەزار کەس لێرەیا ئەژین.

So who are these people that work silently in hotels, restaurants,

کەواتە ئەو خەڵکانە کێن بە بێدەنگی لە ئوتێلەکان، چێشتخانەکان کار ئەکەن

as laborers, babysitters, house helps

وەک کرێکار، بەخێوکەری مناڵ، یاریدەدەری ناوماڵ و

and countless other jobs

چەندین جۆر کاری تر

that we need for cities to function without a glitch?

کە پێویستمان پێیانە بۆ ئەوەی شارەکان بەردەوام بن؟

And where do they live?

وە ئایا لەکوێیا ئەژین؟

In most cities, they live in slums.

لە زۆربەی شارەکان، لە گەڕەکە هەژارنشینەکان ئەژین.

So let us think again.

کەواتە با دووبارە بیر بکەینەوە.

Do we want poor people to stop migrating in our cities?

بمانەوێت خەڵکە هەژارەکە کۆچ نەکەن بۆ شارەکانمان؟

What if they had a choice of not to?

ئەی ئەگەر بەدەست خۆیان نەبێت؟

The second myth is my personal experience.

دووەم ئەفسانە ئەزموونی کەسی خۆمە.

It's this attitude that we professionals know better.

ئەو بۆچوونەیە کە ئێمەی پیشەگەران باشتر شتەکان ئەزانین.

We professionals love to make choices for others,

ئێمەی پیشەگەران حەز ئەکەین هەڵبژاردنی کەسەکانی تر بکەین،

especially for the poor.

بەتایبەتی بۆ هەژارەکان.

Let me share an experience.

با ئەزموونێکتان بۆ باسکەم.

In a workshop that looked at designing 250 new houses for poor families

لە وەرشەیەکدا کە خەریکی نەخشەکێشان بوو بۆ دووسەد و پەنجا خانوی نوێ بۆ هەژارەکان

from a slum nearby,

لە گەڕەکێکی هەژارنشینی ئەو نزیکانە،

there were different building materials that were presented,

کەرەستەی بنیاتنانی جیا جیا پێشکەشکرا،

ranging from papier-mâché, cardboard, honeycomb, etc.,

لە کاغەزی کۆکراوەوە بۆ، کارتۆن،

simply because they were affordable.

تەنیا لەبەر ئەوەی گران نەبوون.

But there was this one idea that was of shipping containers.

بەڵام ئەم بیرۆکەیە هەبوو دەربارەی لەخۆگرەکانی کەشتییەکان.

Now we immediately approved of it,

یەکسەر پەسەندمان کرد،

because we thought it was sustainable, scalable, affordable.

چونکە وامانئەزانی بەرگە ئەگرێت، و گەورەیە، و پارەکەشی ئەدرێت.

But during this presentation,

بەڵام لەکاتی ئەم سیمینارەیا،

a lady from the slum humbly spoke up.

خانمێک لە گەڕەکە هەژارەکە زۆر بە سادەیی قسەی کرد. و

And she asked the presenter,

لە پێشکەشکارەکەی پرسی،

"Would you choose to live in it?"

"خۆت ئەتوانیت تیایا بژیت؟"

(Laughter)

(پێکەنین)

"If not, then why did you think we would?"

"ئەگەرنا، بۆچی وا بیرتکردەوە ئێمە ئەتوانین؟"

Now this was a personal unlearning moment for me,

ئێستا ئەمە ساتێک بوو بۆم بۆ ئەوەی لە سفرەوە فێربمەوە،

where I realized that poverty only changes affordability --

تیایا درکم بەوەکرد هەژاری تەنیا شتی بەردەستت بۆ ئەگۆڕێت --

it does not change aspirations.

خواستەکانت ناگۆڕێت.

Now poor people have lived in temporary structures all their life.

خەڵکە هەژارەکە بەدرێژایی ژیانیان لە ماڵی کاتیا ژیاون.

They go from wall to wall,

لە دیوارێکەوە بۆ دیوارێک،

moving from bricks to tin.

لە خشتەوە بۆ تەنەکە.

They move from building from bamboo,

لە خانوی قامیشەوە ئەچنە سەر،

tarpaulin sheets, plastic, to cardboard, to tin,

خانوی مقەبا، پلاستیک، تەنەکە، و

to bricks and cement,

ئینجا خشت و چیمەنتۆ،

just like the way we do.

هەر وەک ئێمە.

So somewhere here, we were forcing our choices on them.

بۆیە لە شوێنێکا لێرەیا، هەڵبژاردنەکانی خۆمان ئەسەپاند بەسەریانا.

So should we force our choices on them,

بۆیە ئایا ئەبێت هەڵبژاردنی خۆمان بسەپێنین بەسەریانا،

or should we broaden their choices?

یان پێویستە هەڵبژاردنەکانیان فراوانتر بکەین؟

Now what if the opportunity to choose was given to people?

ئێستا چی ئەبێت ئەگەر دەرفەتی هەڵبژاردنی بدرێت بە کەسەکان؟

These are women who lived on the pavements of a neighborhood in Mumbai.

ئەمانە ژنەکانن کە لەسەر شۆستەکانی گەڕەکێکی مومبای ئەژیان.

Now they faced constant evictions, and in response to it,

ئێستا دووچارەی پێچۆڵکردنی بەردەوام ئەبنەوە، و لە وەڵامی ئەوەدا،

they organized a women's network called Mahila Milan.

تۆڕێکی ژنانیان ڕێکخستووە بەناوی ماهیلا میلان.

Not only did they fight against evictions with those in power,

نەک هەر تەنیا بەرەنگاری پێچۆڵکردن بوونەوە لەگەڵ ئەوانەیە کە لە دەسەڵاتان، و

saved money and bought land,

پارەیان کۆئەکردەوە و زەویان ئەکڕی،

but they also designed and helped construct their own houses.

بەڵکو نەخشەیان داناوە و یارمەتیدەر بوون لە بنیاتنانی خانووەکانی خۆیان.

Well, these were illiterate women, so how did they do that?

ئەمانە ژنی نەخوێنەوار بوون، کەواتە چۆن ئەوەیان کردووە؟

They used floor mats and saris to understand measurements.

حەسیری زەوی و ساریان بەکارهێناوە بۆ تێگەشتن لە پێوانەییەکان.

A sari is four meters in length and 1.5 meters in width.

سارییەک درێژی چوار مەترە و پانییەکەی مەتر و نیوێکە.

They used these simple day-to-day items to demonstrate house models.

ئەم ئامرازانەی کاری ڕۆژانەیان بەکارئەهێنا بۆ نیشاندانی نمونەی خانووەکان.

And even they made three options to choose from

تەنانەت سێ مۆدێلیشیان درووستکردبوو بۆ ئەوەی لێی هەڵبژێرن و

and invited all their fellow residents to come and have a look.

هەموو دانیشتووانەکانی تریان بانگ کردبوو بێن و سەیریکەن.

(Laughter)

(پێکەنین)

And everybody loved this option that had a loft in it,

هەمووانیش ئەم هەڵبژاردنەیان بەدڵ بوو کە هەورەبانی تیابوو،

simply because it did two things.

تەنیا لەبەر دوو شت.

One is that it accommodated larger families to sleep in.

یەکەمیان شوێنی زیاتر ئەبۆوە بۆ خێزانە گەورەکان تیایا بخەون.

And two, it allowed home-based work,

دووەمیش، ڕێگەی بەکاری ڕۆژانەی ناوماڵ ئەیا،

such as bangle-making, jewelry-designing,

وەک درووستکردنی بازن، خشڵ،

embroidery-stitching, packaging items, etc.

چنین، و کۆکردنەوە.

Now they also decided to not have a toilet inside,

بڕیاری ئەوەشیان یا کە تەوالێت لە ناوەوە نەبێت،

but instead have it outside in the corridors,

بەڵکو لە دەرەوە بێت لە ڕاڕەوەکانا،

simply because it gave them more space and it was cheaper.

تەنیا لەبەر ئەوەی شوێنی زیاتری ئەیانێ و هەرزاتر بوو.

Now, professionals could have never thought

کەسە پیشەگەرەکان هەرگیز نەیانئەتوانی

of something like that.

بیر لە شتێکی وا بکەنەوە.

A formal design would have necessitated to have a toilet inside.

نەخشەیەکی ڕەسمی پێویستی بەوەیە تەوالێت لە ناوەوە بێت.

Now these are smaller examples --

ئەمانە نموونەی بچووکترن --

let me share some larger context:

با ژمارەیەکی گەورەتر بخەمە ڕوو:

881,000,000 people --

هەشسەد و هەشتا و یەک ملیۆن کەس --

that's about one sixth of this world, as we talk here --

کە یەک لەسەر شەشی جیهانە، لەم کاتەیا --

are living in slums and informal settlements.

لە گەڕەکە هەژارەکان و شوێنە نایاساییەکانا ئەژین.

Almost every city in the global south has large slums in the size of townships.

نزیکەی هەموو شارێکی بەشی باشووری زەوی گەڕەکی هەژارنشینی هەیە بە قەبارەی شارۆچکەیە،

Kibera, in Nairobi,

کایبێرا، لە نایرۆبی،

Dharavi, in Mumbai,

دهاراڤی لە مومبای،

Khayelitsha in South Africa, just a few.

خایلیتشا لە ئەفریقای باشوور، و چەندینی تریش.

Now initially, they were all on waste and abandoned lands

بەشێوەیەکی سەرەتایی، هەموویان لەسەر پاشەڕۆ و زەوییە چۆڵکراوەکان بوون

that cities were never interested in.

As cities grew,

لەگەڵ گەشەکردنی شارەکان،

poor people started building on these lands

and brought value to this over time.

And today, these lands have become real estate hot spots

that everybody wants a piece of.

So how do cities and those in power choose to deal with them?

کەواتە چۆن شارەکان و ئەوانەی لە دەسەڵاتان مامەڵەیان لەگەڵ ئەکەن؟

They demolish them and evict them

وێرانیان ئەکەن و پێیان چۆڵ ئەکەن و

and move them away from their cities and economies

دووریان ئەخەنەوە لە شارەکانیان و ئابوورییەکانیان

in order to build a new infrastructure.

بۆ ئەوەی پێکهاتەی بنچینەیی نوێ بنیات بنێن.

They move them into vertical housing,

ئەیانخەنە ناو تەلاری ستوونییەوە،

which in reality looks like this.

کە لە ڕاستیدا لەمە ئەچێت.

Now when built in high densities,

ئێستا کە زۆریان لێ بنیات ئەنرێت،

they lack natural light and ventilation,

هەواگۆڕکێ و ڕووناکی سرووشتیان نابێت، و

and it often leads to unhealthy conditions.

زۆرجار ئەبنە هۆی بارودۆخی ناتەندروست.

Now, on one hand,

ئێستا، لەلایەک،

poor people are not involved in the participation of design,

خەڵکی هەژار بەشداری ناکەن لە دانانی نەخشەکانا، و

and there is poor quality of construction.

جۆرێتی بنیاتنانەکەشی خراپە. و

And on the other hand,

لەلایەکی تریش،

they do not understand how to do maintenance,

you know, keeping bills, keeping records, forming societies --

this is always difficult for them.

And being forced to move into this formal society,

they end up looking like this in a few years.

Because formalization is not a product,

چونکە بەڕەسمی کردن بەرهەم نییە،

it's a process.

پرۆسەیەکە.

Moving from informal to formal for poor people is a journey.

ڕۆشتن لە ناڕەسمییەوە بۆ ڕەسمی بۆ خەڵکی هەژار گەشتێکە.

It takes time to accept and adapt.

قبوڵکردن و خۆگونجاندنەکەی کاتی ئەوێت.

And when that choice is not given,

ئەوکاتەشی هەڵبژاردنەکەت نادرێتێ،

it becomes like this,

ئاوای لێیەت،

which I'm afraid, in future, these would become the slums.

کە ئەترسم لە داهاتووا، ئەمانە ببن بە گەڕەکە هەژارەکان.

Now instead of doing this,

ئێستا لەجیاتی ئەوەی ئەمە بکەیت،

what if we accommodated poor people

چی ئەبێت ئەگەر شوێنی خەڵکە هەژارەکە بکەینەوە و

and gave them a choice to be a part of our cities

هەڵبژاردنی ئەوەیان بەینێ ببن بە بەشێک لە شارەکانمان و

and develop them where they are,

لە شوێنی خۆیانا پەرەیان پێبەین،

giving them basic services, like in this picture?

خزمەتگوزاری بنچینەییان بەینێ، وەک ناو ئەم وێنەیە؟

Now what happens if cities and governments could work together,

ئێستا چی ڕووئەیات ئەگەر شارەکان و حکومەت بتوانن پێکەوە کار بکەن،

if governments acknowledge poor people,

ئەگەر حکومەت دان بە خەڵکە هەژارەکەیا بنێت، و

and they could build it together?

پێکەوە بتوانن بنیاتی بنێن؟

This is Mukuru.

ئەمە موکوروە.

It's a large informal settlement in Nairobi.

دانیشتگایەکی گەورەی ناڕەسمییە لە نایرۆبی.

It's one of the largest settlements in Africa.

یەکێکە لە گەورەترین دانیشتگاکانی ئەفریقا.

It's home to 300,000 people

ماڵی سێسەد هەزار کەسە

living over 650 acres of land.

بەدرێژایی شەشسەد و پەنجا ئەکرە زەوی.

To help us understand that scale,

it's like squeezing the population of Pittsburgh

into the New York Central Park.

That's Mukuru.

ئەوە موکوروە.

So to give us a glimpse,

کەواتە بیهێنەرە بەرچاوت،

this is the condition of housing.

ئەمە بارودۆخی نیشتەجێبوونە.

And this is what it is in between them.

ئەمەش ئەوەیە کە لەنێوانیانایە.

So what is life in Mukuru like, just talking briefly?

کەواتە ژیان لە موکورو چۆنە، بە کورتی باسیکەیت؟

Five hundred and fifty people use one single water tap

پێنجسەد و پەنجا کەس یەک بەلۆعە بەکارئەهێنن و

and pay nine times more

نۆ هێندە پارە ئەیەن

than what anybody else in the city could pay,

بەراورد بە هەر کەسێکی تری ناو شارەکە،

simply because there is no water infrastructure

تەنیا لەبەر ئەوەی بناغەی دابینکردنی ئاو نییە و

and water is sold.

ئاو ئەفرۆشرێت.

Many come back from work to find out that their houses do not exist,

زۆرێک لە کارکردنەوە یەنەوە ماڵەوە و ئەبینن خانووەکانیان نەماوە،

because they have either been bulldozed,

چونکە یان تەخت کراون،

or they have been burned down.

یان سووتێنراون.

So, tired of this situation,

دوای بێزاربوون لەم دۆخە،

a local slum dwellers' federation called Muungano

ڕێکخراوێکی درووستبوو لە دانیشتووانەکە بەناوی مونگانۆ

decided to do something about it.

بڕیاری یا شتێک بکات لەبارەیەوە.

In four years,

لە چوار ساڵدا،

they organized 20,000 residents to collect data,

بیست هەزار دانیشتوویان ڕێکخست بۆ کۆکردنەوەی زانیاری،

map structures and put it together.

And the plan was very simple --

پلانەکە زۆر سادە بوو --

they only needed four things.

They wanted clean water,

ئاوی پاک،

toilets, decent roads

تەوالێت، ڕێگایەکی شایستە و

and, most importantly, not to be evicted.

لەهەمووشی گرنگتر، شوێنیان پێچۆڵنەکرێت.

So they presented this with the government of Nairobi.

بۆیە ئەمەیان خستە بەردەمی حکومەتی نایرۆبی. و

And for the first time in history ever,

بۆ یەکەم جار لە مێژووا،

a city has agreed to do it.

شارێک ڕازی بوو لەسەر ئەو کارە.

The city of Nairobi, the government of Kenya,

شاری نایرۆبی، حکومەتی کینیا،

declared Mukuru to be a special planning area,

موکوری وەک شوێنێکی نەخشەبۆداڕێژراوی تایبەت دانا،

which means that people could come up with their own plan.

واتە خەڵکەکە ئەیانتوانی بۆخۆیان نەخشەی شوێنەکەیان دابنێن.

People could decide to come up with their own norms and standards,

خەڵکەکە ئەتوانن بۆخۆیان شێوازی ژیان و ئەرکەکانی کۆمەڵگاکە دیاریکەن،

because the standards that work for the formal citizens

چونکە ئەو شێوازی ژیانەی بۆ دانیشتووانی ڕەسمییە،

do not work in informal settings.

بۆ شوێنێکی ناڕەسمی نابێت.

So what does that mean, to give us an instance?

کەواتە ئەوە واتای چی ئەگەیەنێت؟

If these are roads in Mukuru,

ئەگەر ئەمانە ڕێگاکانی موکورو بن،

you can see that there are houses along both sides of the road.

ئەبینیت لەسەر هەردوولای ڕێگاکە خانوو هەیە.

Now in order to bring in a city bus,

ئێستا بۆ ئەوەی پاسێکی شار بێنیت،

as per the standards,

بەپێی ستانداردەکان،

planners would have gone for a luxurious 25-meter-wide road.

پێویستە ڕێگایەکی بیست و پێنج مەتری هەبێت.

Now that would mean displacing [25] percent of the structures --

ئەوەش واتای داگیرکردنی لەسەدا بیست و پێنجی شوێنەکە یەت --

that's a lot of people.

ئەوەش خەڵکێکی زۆر ئەکات.

So instead of doing that, we came up with a 12-meter-wide road,

بۆیە لەجیاتی ئەوەی ئەوە بکەن، ڕێگایەکی دوانزە مەترمان دانا،

which had the structures intact and brought the city bus

بێ ئەوەی شوێنی زۆر داگیرکات.

In another instance, let's talk about community toilets.

نموونەیەکی تر، با باسی تەوالێتە گشتییەکان بکەین.

You know, in high-density areas,

لە ناوچەیەکی چڕدا،

where there is no scope for individual toilets,

کە شوێنی تەوالێتی تایبەتی نابێتەوە،

like the public toilets that we have here.

وەک تەوالێتە گشتییەکانی هەمانە لێرە.

So we would go for a male section and a female section.

بۆیە بەشێک دائەنێیت بۆ پیاوان و بەشێکیش بۆ ژنان.

But imagine this situation.

بەڵام لەم بارودۆخەدا وێنای بکە.

In the morning rush hours to the toilet,

کاتی قەرەباڵغی بەیانیان بۆ تەوالێتەکە،

when everybody is in intense pressure to relieve themselves,

کاتێک خەڵک بەپەلەن بۆ ئەوەی بچن و بگەنە تەوالێت و

and if you're standing in a queue of 50 people,

لە سەرەیەکی پەنجا کەسیا وەستابێتی، و

and there is a child standing behind an adult,

مناڵێک لەپشتی گەورەیەکەوە وەستابێت،

who wins?

کێ ئەیباتەوە؟

Children end up squatting outside.

مناڵان لە دەرەوە دائەنیشن. و

And that's why women decided

لەبەر ئەوە ژنان بڕیاریان یا

to come up with a separate squatting area for children.

شوێنێکی دانیشتنی جیا دابنێن بۆ منداڵەکان.

Now, who could have thought of something like that?

کێ ئەیتوانی بیر لە شتێکی ئاوا بکاتەوە؟

The idea here is that when poor people choose,

لێرەیا بیرۆکەکە ئەوەیە کە کاتێک خەڵکی هەژار هەڵئەبژێرن،

they choose better.

باشتر هەڵئەبژێرن.

They choose what works for them.

ئەوە هەڵئەبژێرن کە ئەکرێت بۆیان.

So choice is everything.

بۆیە هەڵبژاردن هەموو شتێکە. و

And power decides choice.

هێزیش بڕیار لەسەر هەڵبژاردنەکە ئەیات.

And we need those in power --

پێویستمان بەوانەیە کە لە دەسەڵاتان --

politicians, leaders, governments,

سیاسەتمەداران، سەرۆکەکان، حکومەتەکان،

architects, planners, institutions, researchers --

تەلارسازەکان، پلان دانەرەکان، دەستگاکان، توێژەرەوەکان و

and all of us in our everyday lives to respect choices.

هەر یەکێکی تریش لە ئێمە ڕێز لەو هەڵبژاردنانە بگرین.

Instead of choosing what is right for people, for the poor,

لەجیاتی هەڵبژاردنی ئەوەی ڕاستە بۆ خەڵک، بۆ هەژارەکان،

let's acknowledge and empower their choices.

با دان بە هەڵبژاردنەکانی ئەوانا بنێین و هێزی زیاتریان بەینێ. و

And that is how we can build

بەو شێوەیە ئەتوانین شاری باشتر و

better and inclusive cities for tomorrow,

گشتگیرتر بنیات بنێین بۆ داهاتوو،

completing the imagery of cities

وێنەی ئەو شارانە تەواو بکەین

built by the choices of its own people.

کە بە هەڵبژاردنی خەڵکەکان خۆیان دروستکراون.
