How bees can keep the peace between elephants and humans | Lucy King

Ever since I can remember,

on safari in the wild.

But I wonder how many of you

have been truly, utterly terrified by them.

I was lucky to be brought up in Southern Africa

by two teacher parents

who had long holidays but very short budgets.

And so we used to take our old Ford Cortina Estate,

and with my sister, we'd pile in the back,

take our tents and go camping in the different game reserves

It really was heaven for a young, budding zoologist like myself.

But I remember even at that young age

that I found the tall electric fences blocking off the game parks

quite divisive.

Sure, they were keeping elephants out of the communities,

but they also kept communities out of their wild spaces.

It really was quite a challenge to me at that young age.

It was only when I moved to Kenya at the age of 14,

when I got to connect to the vast, wild open spaces of East Africa.

And it is here now that I feel truly, instinctively,

I spent many, many happy years studying elephant behavior in a tent,

But now, in my role as head of the human-elephant coexistence program

we're seeing so much change happening so fast

that it's urged a change in some of our research programs.

No longer can we just sit and understand elephant societies

or study just how to stop the ivory trade,

which is horrific and still ongoing.

We're having to change our resources more and more

to look at this rising problem of human-elephant conflict,

as people and pachyderms compete for space and resources.

It was only as recently as the 1970s

that we used to have 1.2 million elephants roaming across Africa.

Today, we're edging closer to only having 400,000 left.

And at the same time period, the human population has quadrupled,

that it's really hard to keep up with.

Too often, these migrating elephants end up stuck inside communities,

looking for food and water

but ending up breaking open water tanks,

It's really a huge challenge.

Can you imagine the terror

of an elephant literally ripping the roof off your mud hut

and having to hold your children away

These elephants also trample and eat crops,

and this is traditionally eroding away

that tolerance that people used to have for elephants.

And sadly, we're losing these animals by the day

and, in some countries, by the hour --

to not only ivory poaching

but this rapid rise in human-elephant conflict

as they compete for space and resources.

It's a massive challenge.

I mean, how do you keep seven-ton pachyderms,

that often come in groups of 10 or 12,

out of these very small rural farms

when you're dealing with people

who are living on the very edge of poverty?

They don't have big budgets.

How do you resolve this issue?

Well, one issue is, you can just start to build electric fences,

and this is happening across Africa,

we're seeing this more and more.

But they are dividing up areas and blocking corridors.

And I'm telling you, these elephants don't think much of it either,

particularly if they're blocking a really special water hole

where they need water,

or if there's a very attractive female on the other side.

It doesn't take long to knock down one of these poles.

And as soon as there's a gap in the fence,

they go back, talk to their mates

and suddenly they're all through,

and now you have 12 elephants on the community side of the fence.

여러분은 지금 코끼리 12마리가 울타리를 넘는 모습을 보고 있습니다.

And now you're really in trouble.

정말로 문제가 생긴 것이죠.

People keep trying to come up with new designs for electric fences.

사람들은 새로운 전기 울타리를 고안하려고 하고 있습니다.

Well, these elephants don't think much of those either.

흠. 코끼리들이 과연 거기까지 생각 못할까 싶네요.

(Laughter)

So rather than having these hard-line, straight, electric,

단단하고 곧은 전기줄로

really divisive migratory-blocking fences,

이동을 막는 울타리를 치는 것보다

there must be other ways to look at this challenge.

이 문제를 해결할 분명 다른 방법이 있을 겁니다.

I'm much more interested in holistic and natural methods

전 인간과 코끼리가 필요할 때 떨어질 수 있는

to keep elephants and people apart where necessary.

전체적이고 자연적인 방법에 훨씬 더 관심이 많습니다.

Simply talking to people,

talking to rural pastoralists in northern Kenya

who have so much knowledge about the bush,

we discovered this story that they had that elephants would not feed on trees

코끼리가 야생 벌들이 먹는 나무는

that had wild beehives in them.

먹지 않는다는 사실을 발견했죠.

Now this was an interesting story.

이건 꽤 흥미로운 사실입니다.

As the elephants were foraging on the tree,

코끼리들이 나무에서 먹이를 찾으면

they would break branches and perhaps break open a wild beehive.

가지를 부러트려 벌집을 건드리는 꼴이 되니까요.

And those bees would fly out of their natural nests

그러면 자기들의 둥지 안에 있던 벌들이 튀어나와

and sting the elephants.

코끼리를 쏘는 겁니다.

Now if the elephants got stung,

그래서 코끼리가 벌에 쏘이면

perhaps they would remember that this tree was dangerous

아마 이 나무는 위험하다고 생각해

and they wouldn't come back to that same site.

다시는 같은 장소로 돌아오지 않겠죠.

It seems impossible that they could be stung through their thick skin --

두꺼운 피부를 뚫고 쏘는 게 불가능해 보입니다.

elephant skin is around two centimeters thick.

코끼리의 피부 두께는 2cm입니다.

But it seems that they sting them around the watery areas,

하지만 벌들은 코끼리의 몸 중에서 수분이 많은 곳을 공략합니다.

around the eyes, behind the ears, in the mouth, up the trunk.

눈 주위, 귀 뒤, 입 안, 몸통 위,

You can imagine they would remember that very quickly.

And it's not really one sting that they're scared of.

코끼리들이 무서워하는 건 한 번 쏘이는 게 아닙니다.

African bees have a phenomenal ability:

아프리카 벌들에겐 놀라운 능력이 있습니다.

when they sting in one site, they release a pheromone

한 곳을 쏘면, 페로몬을 발산해

that triggers the rest of the bees to come and sting the same site.

나머지 벌들을 불러모아 같은 곳을 쏘게 합니다.

So it's not one beesting that they're scared of --

한 마리면 코끼리가 별로 무서워하지 않았겠죠.

it's perhaps thousands of beestings,

아마 수천 마리의 벌들이

coming to sting in the same area -- that they're afraid of.

같은 곳으로 곧장 날아오니 무서워하는 것이겠죠.

And of course, a good matriarch

당연히, 뛰어난 암컷은

would always keep her young away from such a threat.

어린 아이들을 이런 위협에서 멀리 하려 하겠죠.

Young calves have much thinner skins,

어린 코끼리들은 피부가 훨씬 더 얇아

and it's potential that they could be stung

벌들이 얇은 피부를 뚫고

through their thinner skins.

So for my PhD, I had this unusual challenge

of trying to work out

how African elephants and African bees would interact,

when the theory was that they wouldn't interact at all.

How was I going to study this?

어떻게 연구했냐고요?

Well, what I did was I took the sound of disturbed African honey bees,

and I played it back to elephants resting under trees

코끼리들이 쉬고 있는 나무 뒤에 틀어놨습니다.

through a wireless speaker system,

무선 스피커를 이용해서요.

so I could understand how they would react as if there were wild bees in the area.

그래서 전 코끼리들이 뒤에 벌이 있으면 어떻게 행동하는지 알게 됐죠.

And it turns out that they react quite dramatically

벌 소리에 반응이 꽤 격했습니다.

to the sound of African wild bees.

Here we are, playing the bee sounds back to this amazing group of elephants.

자 한 번 이 코끼리들 뒤에 벌들의 소리를 틀어봅시다.

You can see the ears going up, going out,

귀가 올라가고, 퍼덕거리는 게 보이실 겁니다.

they're turning their heads from side to side,

옆으로 고개를 돌리며

one elephant is flicking her trunk to try and smell.

한 코끼리는 몸을 빠르게 움직이며 냄새를 맡으려 하고 있군요.

There's another elephant that kicks one of calves on the ground

또 다른 코끼리는 땅바닥에 엎어져 있는 코끼리를 발로 차 깨우며

to tell it to get up as if there is a threat.

위협이 다가오고 있다고 알립니다.

And one elephant triggers a retreat,

한 코끼리가 후퇴의 조짐을 보이자

and soon the whole family of elephants are running after her

무리 전체가 그녀를 따라갑니다.

across the savannah in a cloud of dust.

먼지를 휘날리며 대초원으로요.

Now I've done this experiment many, many times,

and the elephants almost always flee.

Not only do they run away,

but they dust themselves as they're running,

as if to knock bees out of the air.

And we placed infrasonic microphones around the elephants

우리는 실험을 할 때 초저주파 마이크를

as we did these experiments.

코끼리 주위에 놓았습니다.

And it turns out they're communicating to each other in infrasonic rumbles

to warn each other of the threat of bees

and to stay away from the area.

So these behavioral discoveries

really helped us understand how elephants would react

should they hear or see bee sounds.

This led me to invent a novel design for a beehive fence,

which we are now building around small, one-to-two-acre farms

on the most vulnerable frontline areas of Africa

인간과 코끼리들이 공간을 두고 경쟁하는 전선 중에

where humans and elephants are competing for space.

아프리카에서 가장 무해한 전선을 만들었습니다.

These beehive fences are very, very simple.

이 벌 울타리는 굉장히 간단합니다.

We use 12 beehives and 12 dummy hives

12개의 벌집과 12개의 가짜 벌집을

to protect one acre of farmland.

1에이커 정도 되는 농지를 보호하게 합니다.

Now a dummy hive is simply a piece of plywood

가짜 벌집은 합판으로 간단하게 만드는데

which we cut into squares, paint yellow

네모로 자른 다음 노란색으로 칠해

and hang in between the hives.

벌집 사이에 걸어놓으면 됩니다.

We're basically tricking the elephants

기본적으로 코끼리들에게 실제로 벌집이 있는 것보다

into thinking there are more beehives than there really are.

더 많이 있다고 생각하게 만드는 겁니다.

And of course, it literally halves the cost of the fence.

당연히 실제 울타리 비용보다 2배 더 저렴합니다.

So there's a hive and a dummy hive

그러니까 벌집 하나 가짜 벌집 하나

and a beehive and now dummy hive,

벌집 하나 가짜 벌집 하나,

every 10 meters around the outside boundary.

경계 10m마다 이렇게 쳐 놓는 것이죠.

They're held up by posts

푯대를 세워서

with a shade roof to protect the bees,

벌을 보호하는 지붕을 만든 다음

and they're interconnected with a simple piece of plain wire,

간단한 줄로 엮습니다.

which goes all the way around, connecting the hives.

벌집이 연결 된 푯대가 곳곳에 세워지는 것이죠.

So if an elephant tries to enter the farm,

그래서 혹시라도 코끼리가 농장에 들어오게 되면

he will avoid the beehive at all cost,

어떻게 해서든지 벌집을 피하려 하겠지만

but he might try and push through between the hive and the dummy hive,

피하려고 하면 할수록 진짜 벌집과 가짜 벌집 사이에 끼어서

causing all the beehives to swing as the wire hits his chest.

벌들을 자극해 가슴에 쏘이게 되겠죠.

And as we know from our research work,

저희 연구 결과를 보셨듯이

this will cause the elephants to flee and run away --

이 방법은 코끼리들을 도망가게 합니다.

and hopefully remember not to come back to that risky area.

The bees swarm out of the hive,

벌집에서 나온 벌들은

and they really scare the elephants away.

정말로 코끼리를 겁줘 쫓아냅니다.

These beehive fences we're studying using things like camera traps

벌집 울타리에 카메라 덫을 놓아서

to help us understand how elephants are responding

밤에는 코끼리들이 어떻게 반응하는지 살펴봤습니다.

to them at night time,

which is when most of the crop raiding occurs.

작물이 가장 많이 습격당하는 시간에요.

And we found in our study farms

that we're keeping up to 80 percent of elephants

outside of the boundaries of these farms.

And the bees and the beehive fences are also pollinating the fields.

So we're having a great reduction both in elephant crop raids

and a boost in yield through the pollination services

수분을 통해서 그 땅의 수확량을 늘리는 것이죠.

that the bees are giving to the crops themselves.

벌들이 작물에 꽃가루를 옮기면서요.

The strength of the beehive fences is really important --

벌집 울타리의 힘은 정말로 중요합니다.

the colonies have to be very strong.

벌집은 굉장히 강력합니다.

So we're trying to help farmers grow pollinator-friendly crops

그래서 우리는 농부들이 속씨 식물 작물을 키우게 해

to boost their hives,

벌집을 더 많이 만들고

boost the strength of their bees

벌들이 힘을 더 가질 수 있도록 해

and, of course, produce the most amazing honey.

아주 맛있는 꿀을 생산하도록 하고 있습니다.

This honey is so valuable as an extra livelihood income for the farmers.

이 꿀은 매우 가치가 있어서 농부들에게 부가적인 수입도 가져다 줍니다.

It's a healthy alternative to sugar,

and in our community,

it's a very valuable present to give a mother-in-law,

which makes it almost priceless.

정말 귀한 선물이죠.

We now bottle up this honey,

이제 꿀을 병에 담아

and we've called this wild beautiful honey Elephant-Friendly Honey.

아름다운 야생의 이 꿀을 코끼리 친화적인 꿀이라고 하죠.

It is a fun name,

웃긴 이름이지만

but it also attracts attention to our project

저희 프로젝트에 관심을 갖게 하고

and helps people understand what we're trying to do

사람들에게 코끼리를 살리려고 우리가 무엇을 하려는지

to save elephants.

We're working now with so many women

우리는 수많은 여성들과 일하고 있습니다.

in over 60 human-elephant conflict sites

in 19 countries in Africa and Asia

to build these beehive fences,

working very, very closely with so many farmers

but particularly now with women farmers,

helping them to live better in harmony with elephants.

One of the things we're trying to do is develop a toolbox of options

to live in better harmony with these massive pachyderms.

One of those issues is to try and get farmers,

and women in particular,

to think different about what they're planting

inside their farms as well.

So we're looking at planting crops

that elephants don't particularly want to eat, like chillies,

And of course, the bees and the beehive fences love these crops too,

One of these plants is a spiky plant called sisal --

you may know this here as jute.

And this amazing plant can be stripped down

and turned into a weaving product.

We're working with these amazing women now

지금 같이 일하고 있는 여성들인데요.

who live daily with the challenges of elephants

매일 코끼리 때문에 문제가 생겨

to use this plant to weave into baskets

이 식물을 이용해서 바구니를 만들어

to provide an alternative income for them.

대체 수입원으로 활용하고 있습니다.

We've just started construction only three weeks ago

이 일을 불과 3주 전부터

on a women's enterprise center

여성 인력 개발 센터에서 시작했는데

making lip balms and honey,

립밤과 꿀을 생산했습니다.

and we're somewhere on our way to helping these participating farmers

그리고 우리는 이렇게 자발적으로 참여하는 농장들이

live with better eco-generating projects that live and work better

환경 친화적인 제품들을 생산하고 삶이 더 나아지고 일도 더 나아져서

with living with elephants.

코끼리와 살 수 있게 되도록 노력하고 있습니다.

So whether it's matriarchs

모계사회든

or mothers or researchers like myself,

엄마든 혹은 저처럼 연구자들이든

I do see more women coming to the forefront now

전 더 많은 여성들이 앞으로 나와

to think differently and more boldly about the challenges that we face.

생각을 다르게 해서 우리가 마주한 문제들을 대담하게 해결하는 걸 봤습니다.

With more innovation,

좀 더 혁신을 만들고

and perhaps with some more empathy towards each other,

서로 좀 더 공감한다면

I do believe we can move from a state of conflict with elephants

코끼리와 계속 충돌이 일어나는 것에서 한 발 더 나아가

to true coexistence.

진정한 공생을 이룰 수 있다고 믿습니다.
