I am an architect.

저는 건축가입니다.

And this picture shows the city that I come from,

제가 태어난 도시의 사진입니다.

Beijing, China.

중국의 베이징이죠.

And old Beijing is like a very beautiful garden,

예전의 베이징은 아주 아름다운 정원 같았습니다.

you can see a lot of nature.

자연 그대로의 모습이 많이 남겨져 있었죠.

When I was a kid,

제가 어렸을 때는 말이죠.

I learned to swim in this lake

저는 여기 호수에서 수영도 배웠고

and I climbed mountains every day after school.

학교 끝나고 매일 산에도 올라갔었어요.

But after getting older,

그러나 시간이 지나면서

we built more and more modern buildings.

점점 더 현대적인 건물들이 들어섰죠.

And they all look the same.

그리고 건물들이 똑같은 모양새였어요.

They all look like matchboxes.

모두 성냥갑들처럼 보였죠.

Why are modern buildings and cities full of these boxy shapes?

왜 현대 건물들과 도시들에 이런 상자 형태가 가득할까요?

In this photo, you actually see two cities.

사진에서 두 도시를 보시면

The one on the left is New York,

왼쪽은 뉴욕이고

and the one on the right is Tianjin, a Chinese city

오른쪽은 중국의 도시 톈진입니다.

that's being constructed.

완성된 모습을 보시면

And they have very similar skylines.

두 도시의 스카이 라인은 매우 비슷합니다.

Maybe they also follow the same principle.

아마도 같은 원리을 사용하여 지어진 것 같습니다.

You know, competing for density,

아시다시피, 건물을 더 많이 지으려고

competing for more space,

더 많은 공간을 확보하려고,

competing for efficiency.

효율적으로 지으려고 서로 경쟁을 하고 있죠.

Therefore, modern architecture

결국 현대 건축은

becomes a symbol of capital and power.

자본과 권력의 상징이 되었습니다.

Chinese cities are building a lot,

중국 여러 도시에는 빌딩이 많은데

they're also, you know,

크게 짓거나 건물을 높이기 위해

not only competing for this space and height,

서로 경쟁을 하기도 하지만

they're also learning a lot from North American urban strategies

중국은 북 아메리카식 도시 설계를 많이 도입하는데

[and] also repeat a lot from city to city.

이 설계는 수많은 도시에서 계속 반복됩니다.

So here, we call it 1,000 cities with one face.

그래서 우리는 1000개의 도시가 하나의 얼굴을 가졌다고 합니다.

So as an architect in China,

그래서 저는 중국의 건축가로서

I have to ask myself, what can I do about it?

이 현상에 관해 어떻게 해야할지 스스로에게 물어봤습니다.

One day, I was walking on a street,

어느날, 저는 길을 걸어가다가

I saw people selling fish.

사람들이 생선을 파는 것을 보았습니다.

And they put the fish in this cubic fish tank.

생선을 정육면체 상자 모양의 탱크에 넣고 있었습니다.

So I was asking the same question,

저는 또 같은 질문이 떠올랐습니다.

why a cubic space for fish?

왜 저것도 정육면체 모양이지?

Do they like cubic space?

사람들이 그 모양을 좋아하나?

(Laughter)

(웃음)

Obviously not.

분명히 아닙니다.

So maybe the cubic space, cubic architecture,

아마 정육면체 공간, 상자처럼 생긴 건축물이

is cheaper, is easier to make.

더 저렴하고, 더 건축하기 쉬워서일 겁니다.

So, I did this small research,

그래서 제가 간단한 조사를 했습니다.

I put a camera and I tried to observe how fish behave

제가 카메라를 두고 생선이 탱크에서

in this cubic space.

어떻게 행동하는지 관찰했습니다.

And then I found they probably weren't happy.

아마도 생선이 행복하지 않을 거라고 생각하게 되었습니다.

The cubic space wasn't the perfect home for them,

상자 모양은 지내기에 완벽한 모양이 아니었죠.

so I decided to design a new fish tank for them.

그래서 저는 생선을 위해 새로운 탱크를 디자인하기로 결정했죠.

I think it should be more organic,

새로운 디자인은 좀더 유기적이어야 하고

it should be a more fluid space inside.

내부가 보다 유동적이어야 한다고 생각했습니다.

More complex interiors.

복잡한 인테리어로 보이죠.

I think they should feel happier living in this space,

저는 이 공간에서 생선이 행복하게 살고 있다 느껴야 한다고 생각했는데,

but I wouldn't know because they don't talk to me.

생선이 말을 못하니 어떤지는 제가 알 수 없죠.

(Laughter)

(웃음)

But one year after,

그러나 1년 후에

we got this opportunity to design this real building for humans.

사람들을 위해 제대로 된 건물을 디자인할 기회가 제게 찾아왔습니다.

This is actually a pair of towers

저희는 이 한 쌍의 타워를

that we built in Mississauga, a city outside Toronto.

캐나다 외각에 있는 도시 미시소거에 지었습니다.

And people call this Marilyn Monroe Towers --

사람들이 마릴린 먼로 타워라고 부르더군요.

(Laughter)

(웃음)

because of its curvature.

건물 외형이 곡선이라 그런 것 같아요.

And the idea was to build a tower,

그 건물을 지을 때 제 의도는

high-rise, residential tower, but not a box.

고층이고 거주하는 곳은 맞지만 네모 반듯한 모양은 아니길 바랬습니다.

It's more inspired by nature,

자연에서 더 많은 영감을 받아

with the sunshine and wind dynamics.

햇빛과 바람의 역동적인 모습을 표현하고자 했습니다.

After we finished designing the first tower,

우리는 첫 디자인을 끝낸 후에

they told us, you know,

사람들은 저에게 얘기해주었습니다.

"You don't have to design the second one,

"두 번째 디자인은 필요 없습니다.

you just repeat the same design,

그저 같은 디자인으로 한 번 더 해주면

and we pay you twice."

두 배를 지불하겠습니다."

But I said, "You cannot have two Marilyn Monroes standing there."

그러나 저는 말했죠. "마릴린 먼로 빌딩 두 개는 안되요."

And nature never repeats itself,

자연은 절대 스스로 반복하지 않기 때문입니다.

so now we have two buildings that can dance together.

그래서 지금 같이 춤출 수 있는 두 건물이 생겼습니다.

So I have this question for myself.

그래서 이 질문을 스스로에게 해봅니다.

You know, why, in the modern city,

왜 현대의 도시에 사는 우리는 건축을

we often think architecture is a machine, is a box?

종종 기계나 박스 정도로 생각하는 걸까요?

So here, I want to see how people looked at nature in the past.

저는 과거에 선조들이 자연을 어떻게 바라보는지 알고 싶었습니다.

By looking into this Chinese traditional painting,

중국의 전통적인 그림을 보면

I found that they often mixed

선조들은 자연과 사람이 만들어낸 인공적인 형태를 사용하여

the nature and the artificial, man-made, in a very dramatic way,

다이나믹한 건축물을 만들었습니다.

so they create this emotional scenery.

그래서 선조들은 감성적인 풍경을 창조했습니다.

So in the modern city, my question is:

현대 도시에 관한 저의 질문은

Is there a way that we don't separate buildings and nature,

빌딩과 자연을 분리하는 것보다 두 가지를 결합시키는 방법이

but combine them?

어떤 것일까하는 겁니다.

So there's another project that we built in China.

제가 맡은 또 다른 프로젝트는

It's a quite large residential complex.

중국에 꽤 거대한 주택단지를 짓는 것입니다.

And it's located in a very beautiful nature setting.

주택단지는 아주 아름다운 자연환경에 위치합니다.

To be honest, the first time when I visited the site,

솔직히, 처음 제가 이곳을 방문 했을 때는,

it was too beautiful.

이 곳이 매우 아름답기 때문에

And I almost decided to reject the project

프로젝트를 거절하려고도 했습니다.

because you feel as a criminal to do anything there.

왜냐하면 이곳에 죄를 짓는 기분였으니까요.

I don't want to become a criminal.

그렇게 하고 싶지 않았어요.

But my second thought was,

그런데 저의 다음 생각은

if I didn't do it,

만약에 내가 하지 않는다면

they would just put, you know, standard urban towers there, anyway.

다른 사람들이 이 도시마저 정형화된 현대 도시로 만드는

And that would be a pity.

슬픈일을 할 것 같았어요.

So I decided I had to give it a try.

그래서 제가 해보기로 결정했어요.

So the way we did that was

제가 했던 방식은

we took the contour lines from the existing mountains,

그곳에 있는 산의 능선 모양을 이용하는 것이었어요.

and we took those lines and then translated them into a building.

능선 모양을 따와서 건물 윤곽에 적용시켜보았죠.

So those towers are actually taking the shapes

타워마다 가지고 있는 모양은

and geometries from the nature.

자연의 기하학적인 모습을 닮게 되었죠.

So each building has a different shape,

제각기 다른 모습을 볼 수 있어요.

a different size, different height.

사이즈도 다르고 높이도 각각 다르죠.

And they become the extension of the nature

그래서 건물은 자연의 연장선으로

[where] they're situated.

동화되었어요.

And you know,

아시다시피 사람들 생각엔

people think we use computer sometimes

컴퓨터 작업으로

to design this kind of architecture,

이런 건축 디자인을 한 것 같지만

but I actually use a lot of hand sketch,

사실 저는 직접 그리는 스케치 작업을 많이 했어요.

because I like the randomness in the hand sketch.

왜냐하면요 자유롭게 손으로 그리는 스케치를 좋아해요.

And they can carry sort of emotions

이런 스케치에서 감정이 느껴지는데

that cannot be made by computers.

감정을 느끼는 일은 컴퓨터 작업에선 불가능하니까요.

Architecture and humans and nature can coexist together

건축과 사람 그리고 자연은 함께 공존 할 수 있습니다.

and are having a good relationship in this photo.

이 사진을 좋은 예로 볼 수 있겠네요.

Actually this guy in the photo is one of the architects on our team.

사실 서있는 남자는 우리 팀의 건축가예요.

I think he's been enjoying the beautiful nature scenery,

그는 아름다운 자연을 즐기고 있는 것 같아요.

and feeling relieved that he is not part of the criminals --

또한 죄를 짓는 게 아니구나하며 안도하는 것처럼 보이죠.

(Laughter)

(웃음)

in the end.

결국엔 말이죠.

Back to the city,

다시 베이징으로 돌아와서

in Beijing, we were asked to design these urban towers.

건축 디자인 의뢰를 받았어요.

And I made this model.

제가 만든 모델입니다.

It's an architecture model,

건축 모델 모형인데

looks like a minimountain and minivalleys.

마치 작은 산과 작은 계곡처럼 보이죠.

I put this model on my table, and I watered it every day.

저는 이 모델을 책상 위에 두고 매일 물을 주었습니다.

And years later, we completed this building.

몇 년 뒤에, 이 건물이 완공되었죠.

And you can see how my hand sketch

그 다음에 제가 스케치 한 것을 보면 디자인이 실제 건물에

is being translated into the real building.

어떻게 반영되었는지 볼 수 있어요.

And they look quite similar.

아마 비슷하게 보일 거예요.

It looks like a black mountain.

검은 산 처럼 보이네요.

And this is how this building is situated in the city.

이 빌딩이 도시에서 어떻게 보이는지 알 수 있습니다.

It's on the edge of this beautiful park.

아름다운 공원도 있네요.

It's different, very different from the surrounding buildings,

다르게 보입니다. 주변의 빌딩들과 아주 다르게요.

because other buildings are trying to build a wall around the nature.

왜냐하면 다른 빌딩들은 자연 주변에 벽을 세운 것처럼 보이지만

But what we're trying to do here

우리가 이곳에 하려고 노력한 것은

is to make the building itself as a part of nature,

이 빌딩 자체를 자연의 일부가 되게 만드는 것이었어요.

so we can extend the nature from the park into the city.

그래서 도시에 있는 공원의 자연이 확장된 것 처럼 보이죠.

So that was the idea.

이런 아이디어 였습니다.

A Chinese art critic drew this painting.

중국 예술 평론가가 그린 그림입니다.

He put our building in this painting.

그는 우리가 만든 빌딩을 이 작품에 그렸는데요.

Can you see there's a black, tiny mountain?

아주 작은 검은 산이 보이십니까?

That looks very fit into this painting.

그림에서는 건물과 자연이 아주 잘 어울리죠.

However, in this reality,

그러나 현실에서는

our design was being challenged

우리의 디자인은 도전을 받았습니다.

that it looks so different from the surroundings.

주변 건물들과 아주 다르기 때문에

And they asked me to modify my design,

그들은 저에게 디자인을 수정하라고 합니다.

either color or shape,

색상이나 모양도

to make the building fit the context better.

현재 컨텍스트와 더 어우러지게 말이죠.

So my question was,

이것에 대한 의문이 생겼죠.

why it fits this traditional, you know, natural context,

왜 이 건물은 현재 도시보다 전통적이고 자연스러운 컨텍스트에

better than the reality?

더 잘 어울렸을까요?

Maybe there's something wrong with the reality.

아마도 현실 이해에 뭔가 잘못이 있는 것 같습니다.

Something wrong with the context.

특히 맥락에 대한 오해인 것 같습니다.

In the very northern part of China,

중국의 가장 북쪽인 지역에

we also built this opera house.

우리는 오페라하우스를 지었습니다.

It's an opera house next to the river,

이 오페라하우스는 옆에 강이 있고

in the wetland park.

습지 공원 안에 있습니다.

So we decided to make this building part of the surrounding landscape

그래서 우리는 주변 풍경의 일부분이 될 수 있게 건축하고자 했습니다.

and merge into the horizon.

그리고 수평선이 보이도록 했습니다.

The building literally looks like a snow mountain.

이 빌딩은 설산과 닮았는데

And people can walk on the building.

표현 그대로 산처럼 건물 위를 걸어 갈 수도 있지요.

During the day or when there's no opera,

오페라가 있는 날이나 없는 날이나

people come here, they can enjoy the views,

사람들이 와서 경치를 즐길 수도 있고

and they can continue their journey from the park

공원에서부터 이 빌딩까지 도보여행을 할 수도 있습니다.

onto the building.

When they reach the rooftop,

지붕 쪽 원형극장 쪽에서 보면

there's an amphitheater that's framing the sky,

극장의 프레임을 통해 원형의 하늘을 볼 수 있습니다.

where they can sing to the sky.

하늘을 보며 노래를 할 수도 있죠.

Inside the opera,

오페라 원형 극장 안의 로비로

we have this lobby with a lot of natural light,

많은 양의 자연광이 들어오도록 설계했습니다.

and they can also enjoy this semi-indoor-outdoor space,

그리고 실내와 야외가 섞여있는 공간을 즐길 수 있습니다.

and they can see the beautiful view around them.

그래서 주변의 아름다운 경관도 이곳에서 볼 수 있죠.

I've been building several mountains,

저는 지금까지 몇몇 산들을 건축했는데,

and here I'm trying to show you

여기서 그것을 보여드리고자 합니다.

one building that I think looks like a cloud.

하나는 제가 볼 땐 구름처럼 보이는데,

It's the Lucas Museum of Narrative Arts

바로 루카스 서사 박물관입니다.

that's being constructed in the city of Los Angeles.

미국의 LA에 준공되고 있는

It's a museum created by George Lucas,

이 박물관을 만든 사람은 조지 루카스인데요.

the creator of the "Star Wars" movies.

바로 영화 "스타워즈" 감독이죠.

Why a building that looks like a cloud?

이 건물을 구름처럼 보이게 건축한 의도는 뭘까요?

Because I think, I imagine, the cloud is mysterious.

아마 제 생각으로는 구름이 신비로워서 같습니다.

It's nature.

자연이니까요.

It's surreal when this natural element landed in the city.

도시에 자연적인 요소를 가져오니 이런 비현실적인 건물이 완성되네요.

And it makes you feel curious about it,

궁금증도 유발합니다.

and you want to explore it.

이 곳을 탐험하고자 하는 욕구를 불러일으키죠.

So that's how the building landed on earth.

그래서 지구에 이런 빌딩이 존재할 수 있었던 것입니다.

By lifting this museum,

이 박물관을 들어올려

making it float above the ground,

땅 위로 띄우면,

we can free up a lot of landscape and space underneath the building.

우리는 빌딩 아래의 많은 공간을 사용 할 수 있습니다.

And then we can, at the same time,

우리는 동시에 빌딩 위의 지붕에

create this roof garden above the building

정원을 만들 수도 있습니다.

where you can visit and enjoy the view.

와서 풍경을 즐길 수 있습니다.

This museum will be completed in the year 2022,

이 박물관은 2022년에 완공됩니다.

and you're all invited when it's completed.

이때 완공되면 여러분 모두 가보시길 바랍니다.

So after building all these mountains and clouds,

지금까지 보신 산과 구름 모양의 건물 다음으로

now we're building these volcanoes

다시 중국에서 우리가 만들고 있는

back in China.

볼케이노로 돌아가 보죠.

This is actually a huge sports park

이것은 사실 아주 거대한 스포츠 파크로

with four stadiums in it,

4개의 경기장으로 이뤄져 있고,

with one football stadium [with] 40,000 seats in there.

그 중 하나는 4만 석의 축구장이 있습니다.

So it's a very large project.

아주 거대한 프로젝트입니다.

And you see from this photo,

이 사진을 보시면,

you can hardly tell where there's building and where there's landscape.

어디가 빌딩인지, 풍경인지 단정짓기 어려우실 겁니다.

So the building becomes a landscape.

빌딩이 곧 풍경이 되기 때문인데요.

Even becomes a land art,

심지어 예술이 되기도 합니다.

where people can walk around the building,

이 곳에서 빌딩 주변을 거닐다 보면

they can climb this building

빌딩을 올라가 볼 수 도 있는데요.

as they're wandering in this volcano park.

볼케이노 공원에 호기심이 생기면 말이죠.

And this rendering shows one of the spaces in those volcanoes.

그리고 이 렌더링은 볼케이노 내부의 모습을 보여주는 것인데,

This is actually a swimming pool

여기는 사실 수영장입니다.

with natural light coming from above.

위쪽에서 자연광이 비추죠.

So, what we're trying to create

그래서 우리는 만들려고 노력하는 것은

actually is an environment that blurs the boundary

건축과 자연의 경계를 두지 않고 조화를 이루는 이런 환경입니다.

in between architecture and nature.

So architecture is no longer a functional machine for living.

그래서 건축은 더 이상 기계로서 기능을 하는게 아니라

It also reflects the nature around us.

우리 주변 자연의 모습을 반영하는 것 입니다.

It also reflects our soul and spirit.

또한 우리의 영혼과 정신을 반영하는 것이죠.

So, as an architect, I don't think

결론적으로 저는 건축가로서 더 이상 미래에

in the future we should repeat those soulless matchboxes anymore.

성냥갑만 계속 만드는 영혼없는 건축을 피해야한다고 생각합니다.

I think what I'm looking for is the opportunity

저는 기회를 찾고 있습니다.

to create a future

바로 미래를 창조하는 것인데요.

with harmony in between humans and nature.

그것은 사람과 자연이 조화를 이루는 미래입니다.
