Over the past couple of days,

as I've been preparing for my speech,

I've become more and more nervous about what I'm going to say

and about being on the same stage as all these fascinating people.

Being on the same stage as Al Gore, who was the first person I ever voted for.

제가 처음으로 투표한 알 고어씨와 같은 연단에 서야한다는 것도 그렇고..

And --

그리고 --

(Laughter)

So I was getting pretty nervous

그리고, 지금도 엄청나게 긴장되는데요.. 왜냐면..

and, you know, I didn't know that Chris sits on the stage,

크리스씨가 저기 연단에 앉아있을 줄 몰랐거든요

and that's more nerve-racking.

그래서 더욱 긴장되네요

But then I started thinking about my family.

그래서 전 일단 가족을 떠올려 봤습니다

I started thinking about my father and my grandfather

저희 아버지, 할아버지,

and my great-grandfather,

그리고 증조할아버지,,

and I realized

그리곤 알게 되었어요

that I had all of these Teds going through my bloodstream --

우리 가문에 이렇게 TED와 관련있는

사람들이 많다는 것을요--

(Laughter)

(웃음)

that I had to consider this "my element."

제가 바로

그 분들의 피를 물려받은거죠

So, who am I?

그럼 전 누굴까요?

Chris kind of mentioned I started a company with my husband.

크리스씨가 이미 말했듯이, 남편과 함께 회사를 만들었는데요

We have about 125 people internationally.

세계적으로 약 125명 정도가 일하고 있습니다

If you looked in the book,

which I really was appalled by.

사실 전 이 그림에 충격을 받았는데요

And because I wanted to impress you all with slides,

since I saw the great presentations yesterday with graphs,

저도 좋은 인상을 주고 싶어서

I made a graph that moves,

and I talk about the makeup of me.

그러니까,,

I'm a blogger, which, probably, to a lot of you, means different things.

전 블로거입니다. 여기 계신 많은 분들에게는

좀 다른 의미 일 수도 있겠네요.

You may have heard about the Kryptonite lock brouhaha,

아마 '크립토나이트 자물쇠' 얘기를 들어 보셨을텐데요

한때 난리였죠. 어떤 블로거가 이 크립토나이트 자물쇠를

where a blogger talked about how you hack

or break into a Kryptonite lock using a ballpoint pen,

볼펜하나만으로 여는 방법에 관한 글을 올린거에요

and it spread all over.

그게 사방에 알려져서, 크립토나이트사는

Kryptonite had to adjust the lock,

and they had to address it to avoid too many customer concerns.

자물쇠를 개선한다고 발표하고

소비자들을 안심시켜야 했습니다.

You may have heard about Rathergate,

그리고 레더게이트(Rathergate) 사건도 들어보셨을텐데요

which was basically the result of bloggers

결론만 말하자면..

블로거들이 '111th'에서

realizing that the "th" in 111

'th'의 식자가

is not typeset on an old typewriter;

구형 타자기에는 없다는 것과, 워드로 만든 문서임을 알아냈죠.

it's on Word.

Bloggers exposed this,

그리고 블로거들은 이 사실을 폭로했습니다

or they worked hard to expose this.

이 사실을 알아내기 위해서 엄청난 노력을 했죠

You know, blogs are scary. This is what you see.

블로그는 무섭습니다. 이런 사례들을 봐도 그렇죠.

I see this, and I'm sure scared -- I swear on stage -- shitless about blogs,

저도 이런 경우를 보면, 정말 무섭습니다 --

이 자리에서 밝히건데 -- 블로그는 잔인해요

because this is not something that's friendly.

다정함이란 찾아볼 수 없거든요

But there are blogs that are changing the way we read news

하지만, 어떤 블로그들은

우리가 신문을 읽고, 대중매체를 접하는 방법을 바꾸게 만들기도 합니다.

and consume media, and these are great examples.

이것들이 좋은 사례죠. 이 사람들이 수천에서 수백만에 달하는

These people are reaching thousands,

if not millions, of readers,

독자들에게 영향을 미치고 있습니다.

and that's incredibly important.

이것은 굉장히 중요합니다.

During the hurricane,

이런 적도 있죠. 태풍이 왔을 때,

you had MSNBC posting about the hurricane on their blog,

MSNBC 방송국은 자신들의 블로그에 태풍관련 글을 올렸고,

updating it frequently.

계속해서 업데이트를 했습니다.

This was possible because of the easy nature of blogging tools.

손쉬운 블로깅 도구가 있었기에 가능했죠

You have my friend,

제 친구도

who has a blog on PVRs, personal recorders.

PDR이나 기록장치 같은 디지털기기로

블로깅을 하고 있는데요

He makes enough money just by running ads,

블로그의 광고를 통해서 돈을 벌고 있고,

to support his family up in Oregon.

가족들의 생활비에 보태고 있죠.

That's all he does now,

지금 그는 블로깅을 '직업'으로 삼고 있습니다, 이런 점도 블로그가

and this is something that blogs have made possible.

가진 가능성의 일종이겠죠.

And then you have something like this, which is Interplast.

인터플라스트(Interplast)의 사례도 있습니다

It's a wonderful organization

인터플라스트는 개발도상국에서

of people and doctors who go to developing nations

성형수술이 필요한 사람들을 돕는

to offer plastic surgery to those who need it.

의사들과 봉사자들의 모임인데요

Children with cleft palates get it, and they document their story.

입술성형을 받은 아이들의 이야기를

블로그에 올리기도 합니다. 정말 대단해요

This is wonderful.

I am not that caring.

저 같으면 그렇게 못할거에요

I talk about myself.

That's what I am. I'm a blogger.

이제 제 얘기를 해보겠습니다. 저는 블로거에요

I have always decided that I was going to be an expert on one thing,

전 늘 한가지 분야에서 만큼은 전문가가 되어야 겠다고 생각했습니다

and I am an expert on this person,

그리고 제 전문분야는 이사람에 대한 것이죠

and so I write about it.

그래서 이 사람에 대한 글을 씁니다

So, the short story about my blog:

그리고 --

저는 블로그를 23살 때인 2001년에 시작했습니다

it started in 2001, I was 23.

I wasn't happy with my job,

그때는 제 직업에 만족하지 못했어요

because I was a designer,

전 디자이너였는데

but I wasn't being really stimulated.

일에 별로 흥미가 없었습니다

I was an English major in college.

영문학을 전공했지만, 전공을 살릴 기회가 없었죠

I didn't have any use for it, but I missed writing.

전 글쓰는 일을 하고 싶었고, 그래서 블로그를 시작했습니다

So, I started to write a blog

and I started to create things like these little stories.

그리고 이런 짧막한 이야기를 만들어 올렸습니다

This was an illustration about my camp experience when I was 11 years old,

이 그림은 제가 11살때 캠프에서의 경험을 그린 것인데요

and how I went to a YMCA camp, Christian camp,

YMCA의 성경학교 캠프에 갔을 때

and basically by the end,

캠프가 끝날 무렵,

I had made my friends hate me so much that I hid in a bunk,

친구들이 절 너무나 싫어해서

전 침대에 숨었는데요. 친구들은 절 찾지 못했고,

They couldn't find me, they sent a search party,

결국 수색대가 동원되고, 사람들은 이렇게 말했어요

and I overheard people saying they wish I had killed myself --

친구들이 절 자살하게 만들어서

jumped off Bible Peak.

바이블 피크에서 뛰어내렸다고요

You can laugh, this is OK.

그래서 -- 아, 비웃으셔도 상관없어요. 괜찮습니다

(Laughter)

This is me.

이런 블로그를 만드는 사람이 바로 저에요

This is what happened to me.

모두 제가 실제로 겪은 일들입니다

And when I started my blog, it was really this one goal --

그리고, 블로그를 시작할 때 한가지 목표가 있었습니다

I said, "I am not going to be famous to the world,

제가 원했던 건 -- 그러니까..

세계적으로 유명인이

되지는 못하더라도

but I could be famous to people on the Internet."

인터넷에서는 유명해져야 겠다고 생각했죠

And I set a goal.

그리고 이제 목표를 이루었고, 상도 받게 됐습니다

I said, "I'm going to win an award,"

because I had never won an award in my entire life.

제 일생동안 상이라고는 받은 적이 없었는데

And I said, "I'm going to win the South by Southwest Weblog award."

이번에 SXSW.com이 주는

웹블로그 상을 받게 되었습니다

And I won it -- I reached all of these people,

많은 사람들과 소통하고

and I had tens of thousands of people reading about my life every day.

제 일상의 이야기를 읽은 수만명의 독자들 덕분에 받는 상이죠

And then I wrote a post about a banjo.

블로그에는 밴조 악기에 대한 일화도 있는데요

I wrote a post

무슨 내용이냐면

about wanting to buy a banjo --

밴조를 구입하고 싶었을 때의 이야기입니다

a $300 banjo, which is a lot of money.

밴조가 한 300불 정도하는데요. 정말 비싸죠

And I don't play instruments;

전 다룰 줄 아는 악기도 없고

I don't know anything about music.

음악에 대해 아는 것도 없었지만

I like music, and I like banjos,

음악이 좋았고, 밴조가 좋았어요

and I think I probably heard Steve Martin playing,

그리고 스티브 마틴의 밴조 연주를 들으면서

and I said, "I could do that."

나도 할 수 있다고 생각했죠

And I said to my husband,

그래서 남편에게 "벤, 밴조하나 사도 돼?" 라고 물었더니 "안돼."라고 하더군요

"Ben, can I buy a banjo?" And he's like, "No."

And my husband --

그리고 제 남편은 --

(Laughter)

this is my husband, who is very hot --

이 사람이 제 남편인데요. 정말 섹시한 남자입니다

he won an award for being hot.

'섹시한 남자에게 주는 상'도 받은 적이 있어요

(Laughter)

(웃음)

He told me,

남편이 말하길,

"You cannot buy a banjo.

"당신..벤조 사면 안돼,

You're just like your dad," who collects instruments.

당신이나 장인어른이나 똑같아. 악기를 그냥 사모으기만 하잖아"

And I wrote a post about how I was so mad at him,

전 남편때문에

화가 치밀어서 블로그에 글을 썼습니다

he was such a tyrant -- he would not let me buy this banjo.

폭군같은 남편이 밴조도 못 사게 한다고요

And those people who know me understood my joke --

저를 아는 사람들은 저의 이런 농담을 이해하겠죠

this is Mena, this is how I make a joke at people.

저 미나는 이런 식으로 농담을 하거든요

Because the joke in this is that this person is not a tyrant,

사실 제 남편은 폭군이나 독재자는 아니에요 농담일 뿐이죠

this person is so loving and so sweet

사실 제 남편은 사랑스럽고 부드러운 남자에요

that he lets me dress him up

자기를 이렇게 차려 입혀놔도 가만 있거든요

and post pictures of him to my blog.

이 사진을 블로그에 올려도 아무 말 안하구요

(Laughter)

(웃음)

And if he knew I was showing this right now -- I put this in today --

그래도.. 여기서 이 사진을 공개한 걸 알면

아마 절 죽이려 들지도 모르겠네요

he would kill me.

But the thing was, my friends read it,

아무튼, 제가 이런 글을 올리면, 제 친구들은 그걸 읽습니다

and they're like, "Oh, that Mena, she wrote a post

그러면 친구들은 아마, 미나가 글을 올렸는데

about wanting a stupid thing and being stupid."

이상한 걸 사려고 그러고 별 멍청한 짓을 한다고 그러겠죠

But I got emails from people that said,

그런데 사람들로부터 이런 메일이 오기도 합니다

"Oh my God, your husband is such an asshole.

"세상에, 그런 망할 남편이 다 있나요

How much money does he spend on beer in a year?

남편이 술마신다고 일년동안 쓴 돈이 도대체 얼마에요?

You could take that money and buy your banjo.

그 돈을 뺏어서 밴조를 사세요

Why don't you open a separate account?"

아니면 통장을 따로 만들지 그러세요"

I've been with him since I was 17, we've never had a separate bank account.

17살때부터 남편을 알았지만, 한번도 통장을 따로 만든 적이 없거든요

그리고 이러더군요 "통장을 따로 만들어서

They said, "Separate your bank account.

쓸 돈을 각자 쓰면 되는거에요."

Spend your money; spend his money, that's it."

남편과 헤어지라고 한 사람도 있었어요

And then I got people saying, "Leave him."

그리고 --

(Laughter)

I was like, "OK, what? Who are these people?

전 이런 생각이 들었어요. 좋아, 그런데 이 사람들 도대체 누구길래

And why are they reading this?"

내 글을 읽는거지?

And I realized: I don't want to reach these people.

그리고 깨달았습니다. 이 사람들을 멀리해야 겠다고요

I don't want to write for this public audience.

이런 내용을 공개적으로 쓰면 안되겠다고 생각했죠

And I started to kill my blog slowly.

그래서 블로깅을 자제하기 시작했습니다

I'm like, I don't want to write this anymore.

더이상 글도 쓰기 싫어졌어요

Slowly and slowly --

아주 서서히--

And I did tell personal stories from time to time.

가끔 개인적인 이야기를 쓰곤 했습니다

I wrote this one, and I put this up because of Einstein today.

이건 오늘 쓴 글인데요. 아인쉬타인을 위해 쓴 글입니다.

I'm going to get choked up, because this is my first pet,

목이 메이려고 하네요.. 제 첫번째 애완동물인데요

and she passed away two years ago.

2년전에 세상을 떠났죠

And I decided to break from, "I don't really write about my public life,"

결국 다시는 공개적으로 글을 쓰지 않겠다는 결심을 깨뜨렸습니다

because I wanted to give her a little memorial.

왜냐하면 제 애완동물과의 추억을 좀더 남기고 싶었거든요

But anyways, it's these sorts of personal stories --

아무튼

이런 식의 개인적인 이야기들이죠. 여러분은 정치관련 블로그나

You know, you read the blogs about politics or about media,

미디어나, 가십거리 같은 것들을 다루는 블로그를 보시죠

and gossip and all these things.

These are out there,

그런 블로그는 많아요. 하지만 전 개인적인

but it's more of the personal that interests me,

이야기에 관심이 더 많고. 이게 바로--

and this is who I am.

이게 바로 저입니다.

You see Norman Rockwell, and you have art critics say,

노먼 락웰의 그림을 보고 미술비평가들은 이렇게 말하죠

"Norman Rockwell is not art.

노먼 락웰의 그림은 예술도 아니라고요

Norman Rockwell hangs in living rooms and bathrooms,

노먼 락웰의 그림은 거실이나

욕실 같은 장소에 걸려있고, 수준 높은 예술로는

and this is not something to be considered high art."

평가받지 못합니다

And I think this is one of the most important things

전 이렇게 생각해요. 우리에게 가장 중요한 것은

to us as humans.

그러니까.. 사람입니다

These things resonate with us,

사람은 우리를 감동시키죠

and, if you think about blogs, you think of high art blogs,

그리고 블로그 중에서도 수준높은 예술 블로그도 있죠

the history paintings about, you know, all the biblical stories,

성경 이야기를 그린 고전미술 같은 걸 다루는 블로그요

and then you have this.

반면에 이런 블로그도 있습니다

These are the blogs that interest me: the people that just tell stories.

전 이런 블로그가 더 흥미있어요. 평범한 이야기를 다루는 사람들의 블로그죠

One story is about this baby, and his name is Odin.

예를 하나 들어드릴께요

이 아기에 대한 이야기입니다. 이름은 오딘이구요

His father was a blogger.

그 아버지가 블로거입니다

And he was writing his blog one day,

어느날 그가 글을 하나 올렸어요

and his wife gave birth to her baby

부인이 아기를 낳았는데 25주만에

at 25 weeks.

태어났다고요

And he never expected this.

예상도 못했던 일이었겠죠

One day, it was normal; the next day, it was hell.

평범했던 어느 날이었는데 자고 나니 지옥같이 변한거죠

And this is a one-pound baby.

아기 몸무게는 450그램에 불과했습니다

So Odin was documented every single day.

매일 오딘에 대한 이야기가 올라왔어요

Pictures were taken every day: day one, day two ...

사진도 매일 올라왔죠. 첫째날, 둘째날..

You have day nine -- they're talking about his apnea;

9일째가 되었을때, 아기가 무호흡증을 앓고 있다고 했구요

day 39 -- he gets pneumonia.

39일째는 폐렴을 앓았습니다

His baby is so small,

아기가 정말 작았고

and I've never encountered such a --

전 한번도 이런..

just -- a disturbing image, but just so heartfelt.

그러니까..

충격적인 사진을 본 적이 없어서..진심으로 마음이 아팠고

And you're reading this as it happens,

마치 내 자신의 일처럼 느끼게 되었던 것이죠.

so on day 55, everybody reads that he's having failures:

그리고 55일째 올라온 글은

아기가 호흡도 멈추고, 심장마비도 일으킨다는 내용이었어요

breathing failures and heart failures,

and it's slowing down, and you don't know what to expect.

심장박동이 점점 느려지고 있고, 무슨 일이 일어날지 몰랐습니다

But then it gets better. Day 96, he goes home.

하지만 그 후로 호전되어서, 96일째에는 집에 갈 수 있었습니다

And you see this post.

이 글을 좀 보세요

That's not something you're going to see in a paper or magazine

이런 이야기는 신문이나 잡지에서는 볼 수 없죠

but this is something this person feels,

이건 이 사람의 감정에 대한 것이고

and people are excited about it -- 28 comments.

사람들은 그것에 동화됩니다

That's not a huge amount of people reading,

28개의 덧글이 달렸는데요. 엄청나게 많은 사람이 읽은 것은 아니지만

but 28 people matter.

적어도 28명에게는 중요한 일이었습니다

And today, he is a healthy baby,

그리고 이제 아기는 건강하게 지내고 있습니다

아버지의 블로그인 snowdeal.org를 방문하시면 됩니다

he is taking pictures of him still, because he is still his son

and he is, I think, at his age level right now

그리고 오딘은 그 또래 아이들에 비해

because he had received such great treatment from the hospital.

병원에서 많은 치료를 받아왔기 때문이기도 합니다

So, blogs.

그래서 블로그란..

So what? You've probably heard these things before.

블로그란 뭘까요? 이런 얘기 전에도 들어보셨을거에요

We talked about the WELL, and about all these sorts of things

오늘 WELL 커뮤니티에 대한 이야기도 했고

온라인 역사 전반에 대한 여러가지 이야기를

throughout our online history.

나눴는데요

But I think blogs are basically just an evolution,

전 블로그는 기본적으로 진화라고 생각합니다

and that's where we are today.

오늘날 우리들의 현주소이기도 하죠

It's this record of who you are, your persona.

자신이 누구인가에 대한 기록이고, 자신의 본모습이기도 합니다

You have your Google search, where you say, "What is Mena Trott?"

구글검색으로 '미나 트롯'을 검색했을 때

And then you find these things and you're happy or unhappy.

이런 개인적인 이야기들을 나오게 되면, 좋을 수도 있고 나쁠 수도 있죠

But then you also find people's blogs,

그리고 다른 사람들의 블로그도 찾아보면

and those are the records of people that are writing daily --

거기에는 사람들이 매일 쓰는 기록들이 남아 있습니다

not necessarily about the same topic, but things that interest them.

같은 주제일 필요는 없어요. 그들이 흥미있어 하는 내용일 뿐입니다

And we talk about the world flattens, being in this panel,

오늘 강연중에 세계의 경계가 허물어지고 있다는 내용도 있었는데요

and I am very optimistic -- whenever I think about blogs,

전 매우 낙관적으로 봅니다

I'm like, "We've got to reach all these people."

블로그에 대한 생각을 할 때마다, 전 세상 사람들과 가까워지고 있다는 생각이 듭니다

수백만, 수억, 수십억의 사람들과 가까워지고 있는 거죠

Hundreds of millions and billions of people.

We're getting into China, we want to be there,

우리는 중국에 진출하려고 합니다. 원했던 일이에요

but there are so many people that won't have the access to write a blog.

아시다시피 중국에는 많은 사람들이

블로그를 만들 기회를 얻지 못합니다

But to see something like the $100 computer is amazing,

하지만 100달러짜리 컴퓨터 같은 걸 보면 그저 놀라워요. 왜냐하면

because blogging software is simple.

블로깅 소프트웨어는 간단하거든요

We have a successful company because of timing,

저는 성공적으로 회사를 이끌고 있습니다. 시기가 좋았고

and because of perseverance, but it's simple stuff --

끈기를 가진 덕분이죠. 하지만 간단한 일이었어요

it's not rocket science.

로켓을 만드는 일도 아닌걸요

And so, that's an amazing thing to consider.

고려해 봐야 할 놀라운 점이 바로 그것입니다

So --

그리고,

the life record of a blog is something that I find incredibly important.

인생을 기록한다는 점에서 블로그는 무언가..

대단히 중요하다고 생각합니다

And we started with a slide of my Teds,

오늘 시작할 때 저 주변의 TED인들을 소개해 드렸는데요

and I had to add this slide,

이 슬라이드는 반드시 추가해야 했습니다.

because I knew the minute I showed this, my mom --

제가 이걸 보여드리는 걸, 저희 엄마는 어떻게든 이 장면을 보게 되실텐데요

my mom will see this, because she does read my blog

왜냐면 제 블로그를 읽으시거든요

and she'll say, "Why wasn't there a picture of me?"

그러면 아마 이렇게 말하실거에요. "왜 발표 슬라이드에 내 사진이 없는거니?"

This is my mom.

이 분이 저희 엄마구요. 제가 아는 사람들은 여기에 다 있습니다

So, I have all the people that I know of.

But this is basically the extent of the family that I know

하지만, 기본적으로는 이 정도의 규모가

저희 가족입니다. 전문용어로는

in terms of my direct line.

저의 직계가족이죠

I showed a Norman Rockwell painting before, and this one, I grew up with,

조금 전에 노먼 락웰의 그림을 보여드렸는데요

저는 이 그림을 늘 보면서

looking at constantly.

자라왔습니다

I would spend hours looking at the connections,

가족관계를 한 시간 동안이나 보곤 했죠

saying, "Oh, the little kid up at the top has red hair;

이렇게 중얼거리면서요. "아 맨위에 아이는 빨간 머리네,

so does that first generation up there."

이 사람이 우리 가족의 1세대구나."

And it's just these little things.

사소한 것이라고 할 수 있겠죠.

This is not science, but this was enough for me

이건 과학은 아니지만, 저에게는 충분히

to be really interested in how we have evolved

흥미로왔습니다. 우리 가족이 어떻게 발전해 왔는지 알 수 있고

and how we can trace our line.

가계를 거슬러 올라가 볼 수 있기 때문이죠

So that has always influenced me.

전 늘 그런 것들에서 영향을 받아왔습니다

I have this record, this 1910 census,

전 이런 기록도 가지고 있어요

이건 1910년도 인구조사표인데요

of another Grabowski -- that's my maiden name --

제 결혼전 이름인 Grabowski와 같은 이름을 가진 사람의 것입니다.

and there's a Theodore, because there's always a Theodore.

여기 Theodore라는 사람도 있네요.

This is all I have, a couple of facts about somebody.

이게 제가 가진 전부입니다. 누군가에 대한

몇가지 정보만 갖고 있는 셈이죠.

I have their date of birth, their age, what they did in their household,

그들의 생일, 나이,

가정안에서의 위치, 그리고 영어를 쓰는지도요.

if they spoke English,

and that's it, that's all I know of these people.

제가 이들에 대해 아는 것은 이게 다에요.

And it's pretty sad,

그리고, 슬픈 사실은

because I only go back five generations, and that's it.

because she's from Cuba and I don't have that many things.

왜냐하면 어머니는 쿠바태생이고, 그외에는 별로 아는 것이 없어요.

Just doing this, I spent time in the archives --

이걸 알아내려고 문서기록을 찾는데 많은 시간을 들였습니다.

that's why my husband's a saint --

저희 남편이 천사인 이유가 여기에도 있는데요.

I spent time in the Washington archives,

제가 오랫동안 워싱턴 기록보관소에 앉아서

just sitting there, looking for these things.

이 서류들을 뒤지고 있을때, 지금은 다 온라인화되었지만요.

Now it's online, but he sat through that.

남편은 끝까지 옆에 있어줬거든요.

And so you have this record and --

아무튼 이 기록들을 보셨구요. 그리고

This is my great-great-grandmother.

이 분은 저희 고조할머니이십니다.

This is the only picture I have.

제가 가진 유일한 사진이죠.

And to think of what we have the ability to do with our blogs;

블로그를 통해서 무얼 할 수 있을까 생각해 보면;

to think about the people that are on those $100 computers,

이런 생각이 떠오릅니다.

사람들이 100달러짜리 PC를 이용해서

talking about who they are, sharing these personal stories --

자신이 누군지 얘기하고, 개인적인 이야기들을 나누는 거죠.

this is an amazing thing.

이건 정말 놀라운 일이에요.

Another photo that has greatly influenced me,

저에게 많은 영향을 준 다른 사진을 보여드리죠.

or a series of photos, is this project

여러 장의 사진인데요.

that's done by an Argentinean man and his wife.

어느 아르헨티나 남성이 자신의 와이프와 함께 한 프로젝트입니다.

And he's basically taking a picture of his family every day

단순히 가족사진을 매일 찍어 둔 것입니다.

for the past, what is '76? -- 20 ... Oh my God, I'm '77 -- 29 years?

과거 76년부터

20년전, 아 이런, 제가 77년생이니까

29년인가요? 29년동안이네요.

Twenty-nine years.

There was a joke, originally, about my graph that I left out, which is:

사실, 오늘 발표에서는 빼 버린 그래프에 관한 재밌는 얘기가 있는데요.

수학있잖아요? 전 100까지 더하기가 되는 것만해도 다행이에요.

You see all this math?

I'm just happy I was able to add it up to 100,

제 능력이 그 정도죠.

because that's my skill set.

(Laughter)

So you have these people aging,

그러니까 여기 -- 가족들 나이먹는 게 보이시죠,

and now this is them today, or last year.

그리고 이건 오늘, 아니면 작년 모습입니다.

And that's a powerful thing to have, to be able to track this.

이렇게 과거를 돌아 볼 수 있다는 것이 참 대단한 점이죠.

I wish that I would have this of my family.

우리 가족도 이렇게 해 봤으면 좋겠네요.

I know that one day my children will be wondering --

어쩌면

언젠가는 제 아이들도 궁금해 할거라 생각해요 --

or my grandchildren, or my great-grandchildren,

제 손자나, 아니면 증손자들도 그렇겠죠

if I ever have children --

아이가 생긴다면요

what I am going to --

아이를 가질 계획이거든요

who I was.

아이들이 나에 대해 궁금해 하리라고, 그런 자아도취에 빠지곤 합니다.

So I do something that's very narcissistic --

I am a blogger --

저는 블로거 입니다 --

that is an amazing thing for me,

그게 저의 놀라운 점이죠.

because it captures a moment in time every day.

블로깅을 하며 매일의 순간 순간을 잡아두죠.

I take a picture of myself -- I've been doing this since last year --

전 제 사진도 찍곤 합니다. 작년부터 그래왔어요.

every single day.

매일 제 사진을 찍어두죠.

And, you know, it's the same picture;

그리고, 보시는 것처럼 같은 사진일 뿐이에요;

it's basically the same person.

그리고 똑같은 인물이죠.

Only a couple of people read it.

이걸 읽는 사람도 몇 명에 불과합니다. 여러 사람들이 보라고 쓴 것도 아니에요

I don't write this for this audience;

I'm showing it now, but I would go insane if this was really public.

여기서 보여 드리긴 하지만, 만약 정말 대중에게

공개돼 버리면 전 미칠지도 몰라요

About four people probably read it,

대략 네 명 정도가 이글을 읽었네요

and they tell me, "You haven't updated."

그리고 그들은 왜 업데이트 하지 않냐고 묻습니다

I'm probably going to get people telling me I haven't updated.

사람들이 왜 업데이트 하지 않냐고 물을지도 모르겠어요

But this is amazing, because I can go back to a day -- to April 2005,

하지만 과거의 어느 날로 돌아가 볼 수 있다는 건 정말 놀라운 일입니다

2005년 4월의 어느 날로 돌아가서

and say, what was I doing this day?

그날 무슨 일이 있었지 하면서 이걸 들춰보면 바로 알게 되죠

I look at it, I know exactly.

It's this visual cue that is so important to what we do.

우리가 무엇을 하던지 이런 시각적 동기는 참으로 중요합니다

I put the bad pictures up too,

그리고, 저는 이런 볼품없는 사진도 올리는데요

because there are bad pictures.

왜냐하면 볼품없는 사진이기 때문이죠

(Laughter)

And I remember instantly: I am in Germany in this --

(웃음)

바로 기억이 떠오르죠. 이 때 난 독일에 있었는데 --

I had to go for a one-day trip.

당일치기 여행을 떠났을 때죠

I was sick, and I was in a hotel room,

저는 아파서, 호텔 방에 있었는데

and I wanted not to be there.

정말 거기 있기 싫었어요. 여기 사진 보이시죠.

And so you see these things, it's not just always smiling.

평소에는 잘 웃지 않지만, 지금은 좀 발전해서 이런 표정도 가능해요

Now I've kind of evolved it, so I have this look.

If you look at my driver's license, I have the same look,

제 운전면허증에는

이런 표정의 사진이 붙어 있죠

and it's a pretty disturbing thing,

참 충격적인 사실이죠.

but it's something that is really important.

하지만 정말로 중요한 점이기도 합니다.

And the last story I really want to tell is this story,

그리고 마지막으로

이 얘기를 들려드리고 싶었어요

because this is probably the one that means the most to me

이 이야기는 어쩌면 저에게 있어서

제가 하는 일에 대해 가장 중요한 의미를 갖기 때문입니다.

in all of what I'm doing.

I'll probably get choked up, because I tend to when I talk about this.

이 얘기를 할 때마다 목이 메이곤 하는데요.

그러니까, 이 여성은

So, this woman, her name was Emma,

그녀 이름은 엠마구요. 그녀도 블로거였습니다.

and she was a blogger on our service, TypePad.

우리 회사의 서비스인 타입패드의 베타 테스터였죠.

And she was a beta tester, so she was there right when we opened --

서비스를 오픈할 때도 함께 했습니다.

you know, there was 100 people.

그 때 이용자가 100명 정도였는데요

And she wrote about her life dealing with cancer.

그녀는 암과 투병하는 그녀에 삶을 블로그에 실었습니다

She was writing and writing, and we all started reading it,

그녀는 글을 쓰고, 쓰고, 또 썼고

우리 모두가 그 글을 읽었습니다. 왜냐하면 그 때는 블로그 수가 적었기 때문에

because we had so few blogs on the service,

we could keep track of everyone.

모든 사람들을 파악할 수 있었죠

And she was writing one day,

그녀는 어느 날 글을 남기고는, 그러니까..

and then she disappeared for a little bit.

잠깐 동안 자취를 감춰버렸어요

And her sister came on, and she said that Emma had passed away.

그리곤 그녀 여동생이 와서는

엠마가 세상을 떠났다고 말했습니다. 그녀와 대화했던

And all of our support staff who had talked to her were really emotional,

우리 지원팀 스탭들 모두는 정말로 감상에 빠져서

and it was a very hard day at the company.

그날 회사 분위기는 정말 힘든 하루였습니다.

And this was one of those instances where I realized

이 일은 --

블로깅이 우리의 인간관계에 얼마나 많은 영향을

how much blogging affects our relationship,

미치는지를 알게 해준 사례중의 하나였습니다.

and flattening this sort of world.

세상의 경계를 허물어 버리죠.

That this woman is in England,

그녀는 영국에 살구요

and she lives -- she lived -- a life

그리고 그녀는 --

일상에 무엇을 하며 지내는지 자신에 대한

where she was talking about what she was doing.

이야기를 하며 살았습니다.

But the big thing that really influenced us was,

하지만 우리에게 영향을 준 가장 중요한 사실은

her sister wrote to me, and she said --

그녀 여동생이 제게 글을 남겼는데요

and she wrote on this blog --

그녀가 블로그에 남긴 글은 --

that writing her blog during the last couple of months of her life

엠마가 생을 마감하기 전 몇 달 동안 블로깅을 하는 순간이

was probably the best thing that had happened to her,

어쩌면 그녀에게 있어서 가장 좋았던 경험이었고

and being able to talk to people and to share what was going on,

사람들과 대화할 수 있고, 무슨 일이 일어나는지 함께 공유하고,

and being able to write and receive comments.

남긴 글의 코멘트를 받을 수 있어서 좋았었다고요.

And that was amazing,

그건 정말 놀라운 사실이었습니다.

to be able to know that we had empowered that,

우리가 블로깅을 할 수 있도록 서비스를 제공하고,

and that blogging was something that she felt comfortable doing,

그녀는 블로깅을 통해서 평안을 얻을 수 있었다는 사실이요.

and the idea that blogging doesn't have to be scary,

그리고 블로깅을 두려워 하지 않고,

that we don't always have to be attack of the blogs,

블로그가 공격당할까봐 늘 고민하지도 않고,

that we can be people who are open, and wanting to help and talk to people.

우리 모두가 열린 마음을 갖고

사람들과 대화하면서 도움을 구하고 있었다는 사실은

That was an amazing thing.

정말 놀라운 일이죠.

And so I printed out and sent a PDF of her blog to her family,

그래서 저는 그녀의 블로그를 출력해서

그녀 가족에게 PDF 파일로 보내주었고,

and they passed it out at her memorial service,

그녀 가족은 추도식에서 그걸 배포했습니다.

and even in her obituary, they mentioned her blog,

심지어 그녀의 부고에도

블로그에 대해 언급했습니다. 그만큼 그녀의 인생에서 중요한 일부분이었죠.

because it was such a big part of her life.

정말 대단한 일이에요.

And that's a huge thing.

So, this is her legacy,

이것은 그녀가 남긴 유산입니다.

그리고 제 생각에

and I think that my call to action to all of you is:

오늘 여러분들께 하고 싶은 말은

think about blogs, think about what they are,

블로그에 대해 생각해 보고, 그것이 무엇인지,

think about what you've thought of them,

그것에 대해 어떻게 생각해 왔는지 되돌아 보고, 그리고

and then actually do it,

실제로 블로그를 해보시라는 겁니다.

because it's something that's really going to change our lives.

블로그는 진정으로 우리 삶을 바꿔줄 테니까요.
