I never planned to become a climate activist.

Here's why,

Ten years ago, when I was 13 years old,

십 년 전, 제가 13살일 때

I first learned about the greenhouse effect.

온실효과에 대해 처음으로 배우게 되었습니다.

Back then, we spent 90 minutes on this issue,

당시 그 수업에 할애된 시간은 90분이었죠.

and I remember finding it quite irritating

그때 저는 그렇게 근본적인 문제가

that something so fundamental

would be squeezed into a single geography lesson.

요약된다는 사실이 꽤 못마땅했습니다.

Some of this irritation remained, so when I graduated from high school,

I decided to study geography,

지리 공부를 하기로 했죠.

just to make sure I was on the right track with this whole climate change thing.

지금 벌어지는 기후 변화에 대해 올바로 알고 싶었거든요.

And this is when everything changed.

그리고 그때 모든 게 변했습니다.

This was the first time I looked at the data,

그때 전 처음으로 데이터들,

at the science behind the climate crisis,

기후 위기 이면의 과학을 들여다보았고

and I couldn't believe what I was reading.

제 눈을 의심할 수밖에 없었습니다.

Like many of you,

여러분들처럼

I thought that the planet wasn't really in a good state.

저도 지구의 상황이 많이 좋지 않다고는 느꼈지만

I had no idea that we are rushing into this self-made disaster

우리가 우리 스스로 만든 재앙에 그렇게 빠른 속도로

in such a rapid pace.

질주 중인지는 몰랐어요.

There was also the first time I understood what difference it makes

그러다 거시적인 관점이 어떤 차이를 만들어내는지

when you consider the bigger picture.

처음으로 이해하게 되었습니다.

Take the CO2 concentration in the atmosphere, for instance,

the number one driver for global warming.

Yes, this looks bad.

네, 안 좋죠.

This looks like we are on a pretty bad track.

아무래도 점점 나빠지고 있는 것 같네요.

But it's only once you don't just consider the last 60 years

하지만 지난 60년이 아니라 10,000년을 고려해 비교하면

but the last 10,000 years

that you understand how terrifying this really is.

그 심각성이 더 확실히 이해되실 거예요.

And this is just one aspect of the crisis we're seeing.

이건 우리가 마주한 위기의 한 일면에 불과합니다.

I'm not going to get into details here, but let me tell you so much:

지금 더 자세히 들어가진 않겠지만 말씀드릴 것들이 있어요.

we are in a point of history

우리가 살고 있는 역사의 기점에선

that the most destructive force on the planet is humanity itself.

우리 인류가 지구를 파괴하는 선봉장이 되었습니다.

We are in a point of history

우리가 살고 있는 역사의 기점에선

that no scientist could guarantee you that you will survive this.

어떤 과학자도 우리의 생존을 장담하지 못합니다.

We are in a point of history

우리가 살고 있는 역사의 기점에선

that humanity is creating an environment

인류가 스스로에게 더 이상 안전하지 않은

that's not safe for humans anymore.

환경을 만들어내고 있습니다.

Yeah, there I was,

네, 거기에 제가 있었죠.

first year of geography,

지리학 전공 1년 차에

and felt pretty overwhelmed.

상당히 압도된 채로요.

But ...

하지만...

there was good news.

좋은 소식도 있었습니다.

The very same year I first learned about all this,

이 모든 사실을 처음 배웠던 그 해에

leaders from across the globe came together in Paris

전 세계의 지도자들이 파리에 모였습니다.

to decide on the common target to limit global warming to below two degrees.

지구 온도 상승을 2도 아래로 제한하기 위한 공동의 목표를 가지고요.

Pictures went around the world,

회의는 전 세계로 보도되었고

and I was told that history was made that day.

그날 역사가 만들어졌다고 하더군요.

How relieving, right?

참 안심되는 일이죠?

Except ...

하지만...

something didn't quite work out about this.

뭔가 제대로 돌아가지 않았었나 봅니다.

After this agreement was signed,

이 협정이 체결 된 후로도,

things didn't really get better.

실제로 나아진 것은 없었거든요.

Actually, they got much worse.

사실, 오히려 더 나빠졌죠.

Decision makers and industries, leaders and politicians,

결정권자들과 산업체들, 지도자, 정치인들은

they went back to business as usual,

평소처럼 다시 일을 시작했고

exploiting our livelihoods like there is literally no tomorrow,

마치 내일이 없다는 양 우리의 생계를 착취했습니다.

building coal power plants again and again,

석탄 발전소를 짓고 또 지었어요.

even though we know that needs to stop,

파리협정에 위배된다는 사실을

according to the Paris Agreement.

우리가 알고 있는데도 불구하고요.

So while there are also good developments, of course --

물론 발전된 부분들도 있었죠.

there are installations of wind and solar energy all over the globe, yes --

풍력과 태양열 에너지 시설이 지구 전역에 설치되었습니다.

but these positive changes are slow -- too slow, in fact.

하지만 이런 긍정적 변화들은 느려요. 사실 너무 느립니다.

So since the Paris Agreement was signed,

파리협정 체결 이후

climate graphs keep racing to the top,

기후 그래프는 계속해서 최고점을 갱신 중입니다.

smashing records every year.

매년 기록을 깨부수면서요.

The five hottest years ever recorded

역대 가장 더웠던 다섯 해는

were the previous five years,

바로 지난 다섯 해이고

and at no time have global emissions been higher than today.

전 세계 배출량이 오늘보다 많았던 적은 없습니다.

So there I was,

거기에 제가 있었죠.

seeing and understanding the science on the one side,

한편으로는 과학을 보고 이해하면서

but not seeing answers, not seeing the action, on the other side.

또 한편으로는 답변과 행동을 발견하지 못한 채로요.

At that point, I had enough.

그 순간, 더는 안되겠다 싶었죠.

I wanted to go to the UN Climate Conference myself,

저는 직접 UN 기후 변화 협의회,

that very place that was created to bring people together

효과는 없었지만 기후 변화를 바로잡기 위해

to fix the climate --

사람들을 한 데 모으려 만들어진

except not really, apparently.

그곳에 찾아가기로 했습니다.

This was last year.

작년 일이었죠.

I traveled to the Climate Conference and wanted to find out

저는 기후 변화 협의회장에 찾아갔고

what this is really like, what this is about.

이게 대체 무슨 영문인지 알아보려고 했죠.

For political realists, this might be no surprise,

정치적 현실주의자들에겐 놀랄 일도 아니겠지만

but I found it hard to bear:

저는 참을 수가 없었어요.

that fossil fuel industries and political leaders

화석 연료 산업군과 정치 지도자들이

are doing everything, everything to prevent real change from happening.

진정한 변화를 막는 데에 모든 수단을 동원하고 있었거든요.

They are not keen to set targets that are ambitious enough

그들은 2도 제한 아래로 우리를 이끌어 줄만큼 야심적인 목표를

to put us on a below-two-degree pathway.

세우는 데 열성적이지 않습니다.

After all, these are the only ones who benefit from this climate crisis, right?

애초에 그들은 유일하게 기후 위기로부터 이득을 얻는 쪽이잖아요?

The fossil fuel industry generates profits,

화석 연료 산업은 이익을 창출하고

and political leaders, well, they look at the next election,

정치 지도자들은 다음 선거를 바라보죠.

at what makes them popular,

인기를 끌어야 하니

and I guess that's not asking the inconvenient questions.

불편한 질문을 던져선 안될 거예요.

There is no intention for them to change the game.

그 사람들은 이 판을 바꿀 생각이 없습니다.

There is no country in the world where either companies or political powers

어떤 국가의 어떤 기업이나 정치 세력도

are sanctioned for wrecking the climate.

기후를 파괴하도록 허가받지 않았습니다.

With all the strangeness and the sadness about this conference,

그 회담장에 대한 위화감과 애석함에도 불구하고

there was one someone who was different,

남다른 사람도 하나 있었습니다.

someone who seemed to be quite worried,

매우 걱정스러워 보이는 사람이었죠.

and that was Greta Thunberg.

바로 그레타 툰베리였습니다.

I decided right there that everything else seemed hopeless

저는 바로 그곳에서 그녀 외의 다른 모든 것들은 가망없고

and didn't seem to make sense,

틀린 것 같다고 판단했죠.

so I joined her climate strike right there at the conference.

그래서 그 회담장에서 그녀의 기후 파업에 동참했습니다.

It was my very first climate strike ever

and an incredibly strange setting,

just me and her sitting there at this conference hall,

surrounded by this busyness of the suit-wearing conference crowd

who had no idea what to do with us.

And yet, this felt more powerful

than anything I had expected in a very long time.

And it was right there that I felt it was maybe time

바로 그 순간에 저는 어쩌면 이 파업을 독일에서도

to start striking in Germany.

시작해야겠다고 생각했습니다.

I was now certain that no one else was going to fix this for us,

그때 저는 누구도 우리를 위해 문제를 해결해주지 않을 것이며,

and if there was just the slightest chance that this could make a difference,

또 변화를 일으킬 아주 약간의 가능성이라도 있는 일이라면

it seemed almost foolish not to give it a go.

해보지 않는 게 바보 같다고 확신했습니다.

So I --

그래서 저는

(Applause)

So I traveled back to Berlin.

다시 베를린으로 갔습니다.

I found allies who had the same idea at the same time,

그리고 저와 동시에 같은 생각을 떠올린 협력자들을 발견했죠.

and together we thought we'd give this "Fridays For Future" thing a go.

우리는 함께 "미래를 위한 금요일"을 시도해보기로 했습니다.

Obviously, we had no idea what we were getting into.

저희도 저희가 무슨 일을 벌이는 건지 전혀 모르고 있었죠.

Before our first strike, many of us, including me,

첫 번째 파업 전엔 저를 포함한 대다수가

had never organized a public demonstration or any kind of protest before.

공개데모나 시위를 조직해본 경험이 없었습니다.

We had no money, no resources

돈도 자원도 없었고

and absolutely no idea what climate striking really is.

기후파업이 대체 뭔지도 오리무중이었죠.

So we started doing what we were good at:

그래서 일단은 저희가 잘하는 것으로 시작했어요.

we started texting,

문자를 돌렸죠.

texting en masse, night and day, everyone we could reach,

엄청 많이, 밤낮으로 닿을 수 있는 모든 사람에게요.

organizing our first climate strike via WhatsApp.

그렇게 왓츠앱을 통해 첫 번째 기후 파업이 조직됐습니다.

The night before our first strike, I was so nervous I couldn't sleep.

첫 파업 전날 밤엔 긴장해서 잠도 못 잤어요.

I didn't know what to expect, but I expected the worst.

뭘 기대해야 할 지도 몰랐지만 전 최악의 결과를 예상했었어요.

Maybe it was because we weren't the only ones

아무래도 의사결정에 젊은이들의 관점을

who had been longing to have a voice in a political environment

반영하는 법을 잊은 듯한 정치적 환경 속에서

that had seemingly forgotten how to include young people's perspective

목소리 내기를 염원해왔던 사람들이

into decision-making, maybe.

지금껏 우리뿐만은 아니었으니까요.

But somehow this worked out.

하지만 어떻게든 성공해냈죠.

And from one day to the other,

그리고 그날 하루 동안

we were all over the place.

우리는 도처에 있었습니다.

And I, from one day to the other,

그리고 저는 그 하루 동안

became a climate activist.

기후활동가가 되었습니다.

Usually,

대개

in these kind of TED Talks,

I would now say how it's overly hopeful,

how we young people are going to get this sorted,

어떻게 우리 젊은이들이 이 문제를 바로잡을지,

how we're going to save the future and the planet and everything else,

어떻게 미래와 지구, 다른 모든 것들을 수호할 것인지

how we young people striking for the climate

어떻게 기후 파업을 진행해서

are going to fix this.

문제를 고쳐 놓을지요.

Usually.

보통은 그렇죠.

But this is not how this works.

하지만 그렇게는 안 되더군요.

This is not how this crisis works.

기후 위기는 그런 식으로 돌아가지 않습니다.

Here's a twist:

여기 반전이 있습니다.

today, three and a half years after that Paris Agreement was signed,

파리협정 체결 이후 삼 년 반이 지난 지금

when we look at the science,

과학적 관점에서

we find it's still possible to keep global warming

지구온난화를 진행을 2도 아래로 제한하는 것은

to below two degrees --

여전히 가능합니다.

technically.

And we also see it's still possible to hold other disastrous developments

또 다른 재난에 가까운 개발을 중지시키는 것도 가능해요.

we're seeing, such as mass extinction and soil degradation --

It's just incredibly, incredibly unlikely.

다만 현실가능성이 극히 떨어질 뿐입니다.

And in any case,

그렇더라도

the world would have to see changes

세계는 우리가 여지껏 경험해 보지 못한

which we have never experienced before.

변화들을 목격해야만 할 것입니다.

We'd have to fully decarbonize our economies by 2050

우리는 경제를 2050년까지 완전히 비탄소화 시켜야합니다.

and transform the distribution of powers

그리고 현재 화석 연료 거대 기업과 정치 지도자들이

that is currently allowing those fossil fuel giants and political leaders

판세를 장악할 수 있도록 하는

to stay on top of the game.

We are talking of nothing less than the greatest transformation

since the Industrial Revolution.

We are talking, if you want to put it that way,

we are talking of a climate revolution

in a minimum amount of time.

We wouldn't have a single further year to lose.

And in any case, for any of that change to happen,

the world needs to stop relying on

one or two or three million school strikers to sort this out.

Yes, we are great, we are going to keep going,

we are the start.

This is not a job for a single generation.

For this change to happen,

we will have to get one million things sorted.

It's an incredibly complex thing, after all.

But ...

there are some things that everyone can get started with.

누구나 쉽게 시작할 수 있는 그런 것도 있습니다.

Bad news first: if you thought I would tell you now to cycle more

나쁜 소식은 제가 만약 여러분들이 이제부터 자전거와 중고제품을

or eat less meat, to fly less, or to go secondhand shopping,

더 애용하시고, 육식과 비행을 줄이시라 권장할 거라 생각하셨다면

sorry, this is not that easy.

사과 드립니다. 그렇게 쉽진 않을 거거든요.

But here comes the good news:

그래도 좋은 소식도 있습니다.

you are more than consumers and shoppers,

여러분이 단순 소비자 혹은 구매자 그 이상의 존재라는 것입니다.

even though the industry would like you to keep yourselves limited to that.

비록 산업체들은 여러분이 자신을 그 수준에 가둬두게 바라지만요.

No; me and you -- we are all political beings,

아니죠, 여러분과 저는 모두 정치적 존재입니다.

and we can all be part of this answer.

그리고 우리 모두가 해답의 일부가 될 수 있습니다.

We can all be something that many people call climate activists.

우리 모두 기후 활동가라 불리는 누군가가 될 수 있습니다.

Yay?

So what are the first steps?

Four first steps that are essential to get everything else done,

four first steps that everyone can get started with,

four first steps that decide about everything that can happen after.

So what's that?

Number one:

첫 번째,

we need to drastically reframe our understanding of a climate activist,

our understanding of who can be the answer to this.

A climate activist isn't that one person that's read every single study

and is now spending every afternoon handing out leaflets about vegetarianism

in shopping malls.

A climate activist can be everyone,

everyone who wants to join a movement of those who intend to grow old

on a planet that prioritizes protection of natural environments

and happiness and health for the many

over the destruction of the climate and the wrecking of the planet

for the profits of the few.

함께하고 싶은 누구나요.

And since the climate crisis is affecting every single part of our social,

of our political and of our private life,

모든 부분에 영향을 미치고 있기 때문에

we need climate activists everywhere on every corner,

도처의 모든 골목마다 기후 활동가가 필요합니다.

not only in every room,

but also in every city and country and state and continent.

모든 도시와 국가, 주와 대륙에요.

Second:

두 번째,

I need you to get out of that zone of convenience,

여러분은 편의의 영역을 벗어나셔야 합니다.

away from a business as usual that has no tomorrow.

미래가 없는 늘 하던대로의 일에서 멀어지세요.

All of you here, you are either a friend or a family member,

여기 계신 모든 분들이 누군가의 친구거나 가족이죠.

you are a worker, a colleague, a student, a teacher

직원이자 동료, 학생, 선생님

or, in many cases, a voter.

그리고 대부분 유권자죠.

All of this comes along with a responsibility

that this crisis requires you to grow up to.

기후 위기는 여러분에게 책임을 지웁니다.

There's the company that employs you

여러분을 고용하고 후원하는

or that sponsors you.

Is it on track of meeting the Paris Agreement?

Does your local parliamentarian know that you care about this,

that you want this to be a priority in every election?

모든 선거에서 우선시되길 원한다는 걸 아나요?

Does your best friend know about this?

여러분의 가장 친한 친구는 아나요?

Do you read a newspaper or write a newspaper? Great.

Then let them know you want them to report on this in every issue,

그들에게 매 호마다 이 문제를 다루길 원한다고 알리세요.

and that you want them to challenge decision makers in every single interview.

결정권자들과의 인터뷰에서 항상 이의를 제기하길 원한다고도요.

If you're a singer, sing about this. If you're a teacher, teach about this.

And if you have a bank account, tell your bank you're going to leave

if they keep investing in fossil fuels.

And, of course, on Fridays, you should all know what to do.

Thirdly:

세 번째,

leaving that zone of convenience works best when you join forces.

편의를 포기하는 것은 서로 뭉칠 때 가장 효과적입니다.

One person asking for inconvenient change

한 사람이 불편한 변화를 요구하면

is mostly inconvenient.

다른 사람들은 불편해하죠.

Two, five, ten, one hundred people asking for inconvenient change

둘, 다섯, 열, 백명의 사람들이 불편한 변화를 요구한다면

are hard to ignore.

무시하기 어려워 집니다.

The more you are, the harder it gets for people to justify

더 많이 모일수록 사람들은 미래가 없는 체제를

a system that has no future.

정당화하기 더 어려워집니다.

Power is not something that you either have or don't have.

권력은 당신이 가지거나 가지지 못하는 것이 아닙니다.

Power is something you either take or leave to others,

권력은 당신이 쟁취하거나 남에게 버려두는 것입니다.

and it grows once you share it.

그리고 권력은 나눌수록 강해집니다.

We young people on the streets, we school strikers,

우리 거리의 젊은이들, 등교 거부자들이

we are showing how this can work out.

One single school striker will always be one single school striker --

한 명의 등교 거부 학생은 영원히 한 명의 등교 거부 학생일 뿐입니다.

well, Greta Thunberg.

Two, five, ten, one thousand people striking school are a movement,

둘, 다섯, 열, 천 명이 등교를 거부하면 운동이 되죠.

and that's what we need everywhere.

그런 일이 곳곳에 있어야 합니다.

No pressure.

강요는 아니에요.

And number four, finally --

마지막으로 네 번째는

and this is probably the most important aspect of all of this --

아마 지금까지 말씀 드린 것 중에서 가장 중요한 거랍니다.

I need you to start taking yourselves more seriously.

여러분이 더 진지하게 임하셔야 한다는 겁니다.

If there's one thing I've learned

지난 7개월 간 기후 활동을 조직하면서

during seven months of organizing climate action,

제가 배운 것 한 가지는

it's that if you don't go for something,

여러분이 시도하지 않는다면

chances are high that no one else will.

다른 사람도 하지 않을 가능성이 높다는 것입니다.

The most powerful institutions of this world

전 세계에서 가장 강력한 기관들은

have no intention of changing the game they're profiting from most,

자신들이 가장 이익을 보는 판을 바꿀 생각이 없습니다.

so there's no point in further relying on them.

그러니 더이상 그들에게 기대는 건 무의미하죠.

That's scary, I know.

두렵겠죠, 알아요.

That's a huge responsibility, a huge burden on everyone's shoulders, yes.

큰 책임이고, 모두의 어깨에 커다란 짐이 지워졌습니다.

But this also means,

if we want to,

우리가 바란다면

we can have a say in this.

우리도 발언권이 있다는 뜻입니다.

We can be part of that change. We can be part of that answer.

And that's quite beautiful, right?

아름다운 일 아닌가요?

So let's give it a try, let's rock and roll,

그러니 해보자고요. 제대로 해봐요.

let's flood the world with climate activists.

기후활동가가 전 세계에 넘쳐나게끔요.

Let's get out of the zones of convenience

편의의 영역에서 빠져나옵시다.

and join forces and start taking ourselves more seriously.

힘을 모으고 더 진지하게 임합시다.

Imagine what this world would look like,

아이들이 자라나게 될 이 세계가

where children would grow up,

어떤 모습일지 상상해보세요.
