This is a sculpture I made,

which is a way of, kind of, freeing a form

into an object that has different degrees of freedom.

So, it can balance on a point.

This is a bronze ball,

an aluminum arm here,

and then this wooden disk.

이것은 나무로 만든 디스크입니다.

And the wooden disk was really thought about

이 목재 디스크를 만들 때

as something that you'd want to hold on to,

손으로 붙잡고 싶을 만큼

and that would glide easily through your hands.

매끄러운 표면을 만들려고 했습니다.

The aluminum is because it's very light.

알루미늄은 가벼워서 사용했구요.

The bronze is nice hard, durable material

that could roll on the ground.

Inside of the bronze ball

there's a lead weight

that is free-swinging on an axle

that's on two bearings

that pass in between, across it,

like this, that counterbalance this weight.

이렇게 무게 균형을 잡아줍니다.

So it allows it to roll.

And the sphere has that balance property

that it always sort of stays still

and looks the same from every direction.

But if you put something on top of it,

it disbalances it. And so it would tip over.

But in this case because

the interior is free-swinging

And then there was a second level to this object,

I wanted it to convey some proportions that I was interested in,

I was exploring, really early on,

wanting to make things float in the air.

And I thought up a lot of ideas.

This is sculpture that I made that --

it's magnetically levitated.

The thing is, is that it's slightly dangerous.

Normally it's sort of cordoned off when it's in a museum.

But it's uh -- let's see if I can manipulate it a little bit

So this is just floating,

floating on a permanent magnetic field,

Except there is a slight tether here,

which keeps it from going over the top of its field.

It's sort of surfing on a magnetic field

at the crest of a wave.

And that's what supports the object and keeps it stable.

I have a sort of a collection of videos

that I took of different installations, which I could narrate.

This is a sculpture of the Sun

and the Earth, in proportion.

Representing that eight and a half minutes

that it takes light and gravity to connect the two.

So here is the Earth. It's a little less than a millimeter

that was turned of solid bronze.

And here is a similar sculpture.

That's the Sun at that end.

And then in a series of 55 balls,

it reduces, proportionately -- each ball

This is in a sculpture park in Taejon.

This one is about the Moon

and then the distance to the Earth, in proportion also.

This is a little stone ball, floating.

As you can see the little tether,

that it's also magnetically levitated.

And then this is the first part of --

this is 109 spheres,

since the Sun is 109 times the diameter of the Earth.

And so this is the size of the Sun.

And then each of these little spheres

It's made up of 16 concentric shells. Each one has 92 spheres.

This is in the courtyard of a twelfth-century alchemist.

I was thinking that the Sun is kind of the ultimate alchemist. (Laughter)

So this, again, is on the subject --

a slice from the equator of the Earth.

And then the Moon in the center,

and it's floating. And this is in France.

This is in Sapporo.

It's balancing on a shaft and a ball,

right at the center of gravity, or just slightly above the center of gravity,

which means that the lower half of the object

is just a little bit more weighty.

So you can see it rotating here.

It weighs about a ton or over a ton.

It's made of stainless steel, quite thick.

But it's being balanced like that in equilibrium.

It's susceptible to motion by the air currents.

This is another species of work that I do.

These are these arrays. These spheres are all suspended,

but they have magnets horizontally in them

that make them all like compasses.

그게 이 공들 모두를 나침반처럼 만들죠.

So all the red sides, for example, face one direction: south.

And the blue side, the compliment, faces the other way.

So as you turn around you're seeing different colors.

This is based on the structure of a diamond.

And then there were kind of large spaces in the hollows

And so I placed one more element of each one of them.

These were white spheres.

Then I had video projectors

that were projecting intermittently onto the spheres.

So they would catch parts of the images,

This is something I did

It was the idea of isolating the tactile component of sculpture,

and then putting it into a communication system.

This is an idea of moving a sculpture, a ball,

that would be directed around the room

조각이 방 둘레를 따라 돌도록 되어있습니다.

by a computer.

This is a clock I designed.

It has Buckminster Fuller's Dymaxion Map edited here.

It turns once per day in synchrony with the Earth.

And then, this is like

projects that are harder to build.

This has a diamond-bottomed lake.

So it's a floating island

with water, fresh water,

that can fly from place to place.

This would be grown, I suppose,

with nanotechnology in the future sometime.

미래의 언젠가는 나노 기술과 더불어 성장할 것 같아요.

In the course of doing my work

이런 작업들을 하는 과정에서 보건데

I sort of have a broad range of interests.

저는 다양한 분야에 관심이 있는 것 같습니다.

And some of it is just the idea of creating media --

그리고 그 중 일부는 미디어를 창조한다는 생각입니다.

media as a sculpture,

조각으로서의 미디어 말입니다.

something that would keep the sculpture

그 무언가가 조각 작품들이

fresh and ever-changing,

신선하면서도 항상 변하도록 유지해 줄 것입니다.

by just creating the media that the sculpture is made of.

And I had a lot of --

always interested in the concept of a crystal ball.

항상 크리스털 공의 개념에 관심이 아주 많습니다.

And the idea that you could see things

inside of a crystal ball and predict the future --

미래를 바라볼 수 있다는 점에서 흥미로워요 --

or a television set, where it's sort of like a magic box

어떤 의미에서 텔레비전 같아요. 마법 상자 같은 것이죠.

where anything can appear.

무엇이든 가능한 세상이 속에 있으니까요.

I had thought about, a long time ago,

저는 오래 전에 이런 생각을 해봤습니다.

in the late '60s -- when I was just starting out,

I was under the influence of thinking about Buckminster Fuller's

grand project for an electric globe

I was thinking about mass produced spherical television sets

that could be linked to orbiting camera satellites.

This has evolved over the years

이 생각은 몇 년에 걸쳐 발전해 왔습니다.

in a lot of different iterations.

But this the current version of it,

is a flying airship

that is about 35 meters in diameter,

The whole surface of it is covered with 60 million diodes,

red, blue, and green,

빨강, 파랑 그리고 초록색이죠.

that allow you to have a high-resolution picture, visible in daylight.

대낮에도 고해상도의 그림을 볼 수 있을 겁니다.

I came with a plan.

계획은 다 짰습니다.

I brought it to Paul MacCready's company AeroVironment

이것을 폴 맥크레디의 회사인 에어로바이론먼트에 가져갔습니다.

to do a feasibility study,

실현 가능한지 알아보려고요.

and they analyzed it,

그 사람들이 분석을 해보더니

and came up with a lot of innovative ideas about how to propel it.

이 아이디어를 어떻게 실현할 수 있을지에 대한 혁신적인 아이디어를 아주 많이 생각해 내더군요.

So we have a physical plan of how to make this actually happen.

결국 이것을 어떻게 실현시킬 것인지에 대한 구체적 계획까지 완성했습니다.

This is the control room inside of the ship.

The idea of this air genie is,

이 비행선 아이디어는

it's something that can just transform and become anything.

모양이 바뀌면서 무엇이든 될 수 있는 어떤 것을 만들고 싶었죠.

It's like a traveling show.

여행하는 전시회 같은 겁니다.

It has speakers on it. And it has cameras

스피커와 카메라도 비행선의 표면에

over the surface of it.

So it can see its environment,

그래서 주변 풍경을 인식할 수 있고,

and then it can mimic its environment and disappear.

Here the legs are retracting.

The cabin is open or closed, as you like.

It weighs about 20 tons.

It has on-board generators.

It can generate about a million kilowatts,

in order to be bright enough

to be visible in daylight.

빛을 내려면 이 정도 전력이 필요해요.

The idea of it is to make a kind of a traveling show.

일종의 여행 다니는 작품 전시회 같은 것을 하는 겁니다.

It really would be dedicated to the arts and to interacting.

예술과 사람들의 인터랙션에 큰 의미를 부여한 작품이죠.

There would be on board a crew of artists, musicians,

선내에는 예술가, 음악가인 선원들이 있을 것입니다.

that would allow the thing to become

그렇게 해야 이 비행선이

actually kind of a conscious object

일종의 의식이 있는 물체가 될 수 있을거에요.

that would respond to the moment,

매 순간 적절하게 반응하고

and to interact as an entity

독립체로서 상호작용하면서

that was aware, that could communicate.

깨어있고 의사소통도 할 수 있는 그런 물체가 되는거죠.

It's completely silent and nonpolluting.

완전히 조용하고 환경을 오염시키지도 않습니다.

It has electric motors with a novel propulsion system.

새로운 추진 체계를 가진 전기 모터를 사용하고 있습니다.

It could be interacted with large crowds in different ways.

군중과 함께 다른 방식으로 상호작용할 수 있을 것입니다.

Primarily I would be interested in

저는 주로 이것이 사람들과 어떻게

how it would interact with, say,

상호작용할지에 관심이 있습니다. 말하자면,

going to a college campus,

대학 캠퍼스에 가서,

and then being used as a way of talking about the earth sciences,

지구과학이나 세계, 지구 곳곳에서 일어나고 있는 일들에 대해

the world, the situation of the globe.

이야기할 수 있는 방법으로써 쓰일 수 있겠죠.

The default image on the object

기본적으로 설정된 그림은

would probably be a high-resolution Earth image.

But then one could interact with that

그러나 사람들이 그것과 상호작용할 수 있고,

and show plate tectonics or global warming issues, or migrations --

지각이동설이나 지구 온난화, 또는 철새 이동과 같은 것들도 보여줄 수 있고 --

all of the things that we're concerned with today.

사실상 오늘날 이슈가 되는 모든 것들을 보여 줄 수 있습니다.

And then at night the idea is that

it would be used as kind of a rave situation,

where the people could cut loose,

and the music and the lights, and everything.

So it could land in a park, for example.

Or this could represent a college green.

And then it would have a corresponding website

아마 그에 대한 웹사이트도 만들거에요.

that would show the itinerary of this.

이 작품의 전시 일정표를 보여주는 사이트 같은 것이죠.

And so interacting with the same kind of imagery.

같은 종류의 형상과 상호작용하는 것도 가능하겠지요.

It would also be able to be an open code,

열린 방식으로 전시가 될 수도 있을 거에요.

so people could interact with it.

사람들이 만져볼 수 있도록요.

It would be forum for people's ideas about

그러면 사람들의 생각의 장이 될 수도 있을 것입니다.

what they would like to see on a giant screen of this type.

사람들이 이런 식의 거대한 화면에서 보고 싶은 것에 대한 생각을 나누는 것이죠.

So that's pretty much it.
