We've all heard these things.

But this is about Africa, the story we have not heard.

The stories that we want to know,

and the stories that do exist about positive tales.

희망이 담겨있는 이야기 입니다

A part of my talk is going to be about investment opportunities

that exist on this continent,

to separate the rhetoric from the reality, the fact from the fiction.

So let's get going because Africa,

to some degree, is on a turnaround.

A turnaround in terms of how it manages its image,

of what I have focused on for most of my professional career.

And it all started almost a decade ago,

as a young consultant at McKinsey & Company

at their first African office in Johannesburg.

But I really formalized this focus on turnarounds

사실, 제가 전환점에 대해 집중하기 시작한 건

when I was completing my MBA in the United States.

미국에서 MBA 과정을 밟고 있을때였습니다

It all began with a fantastic phone call.

이 모든 것이 놀라운 한 통의 전화로 부터 시작되었습니다.

It was from Rosabeth Moss Kanter,

로자배스 모스 칸터의 전화였죠,

Harvard Business School guru and a professor of mine.

And she said, "I want to write a case, Euvin --

교수님께서 제게 말씀셨습니다

a case on a public-sector leader

that has lessons for the corporate world."

And the leader that came to mind was Nelson Mandela.

넬슨 만델라 대통령이 떠 오르더군요

Because Nelson Mandela, as he took over power

as the first democratically-elected president of South Africa,

남아공 최초의 민주적 선거를 통해 정권을 잡은 대통령으로서

faced a situation of a country

국가가 혼란의 늪으로 빠질 수 있는

that could have slid into the abyss of chaos.

But he started the country on a path of a positive cycle.

Now the case, "Nelson Mandela: Change Leader,"

became part of the research base for a chapter

in Rosabeth's new book called "Confidence."

And "Confidence" became a New York Times bestseller

And why I tell you this story is because later, when I was interviewed

on SABC Africa, on a pan-African broadcast, they asked,

SABC 아프리카와 인터뷰를 했을때 그들이 저에게 물었죠

"What is your key lesson, or the key thing you enjoy the most?" --

"얻은 교훈의 핵심이 무엇인가요? 가장 크게 도움된 교훈은 무엇인가요?"

because it was a huge privilege to be part of such a project.

그만큼 이런 프로젝트에 참여 할수있던 것 자체가 저에게는 영광이었기 때문입니다

The lesson from that was that it was Africa -- an African story --

프로젝트를 통해 이것이 아프리카의 현실이고 아프리카의 이야기라는 것을 배웠습니다

that was used to share news with the rest of the world

전세계 뉴스를 통해 알려진 아프리카의 이야기이며

of what the benchmark can be for corporate turnarounds.

기업들이 새로운 변화를 꾀하기위해 밴치마킹 할 수 있는 이야기 입니다

Africa was being used as a success story!

아프리카는 성공신화의 예가 되었죠

So I want to share with you a personal story

그래서, 저는 전환과 변화에 대한

about a turnaround or a transformation.

개인적인 경험을 나누고자 합니다

And that has to do with me

제 실제 경험입니다

because in 1994, I packed a few things into a backpack

1994년, 대학교를 한창 다니던중

and headed off for a year of travel

필요한 몇가지만 책가방에 넣고

in the middle of my university career.

1년간 훌쩍 여행을 떠났습니다

You should have seen my parents' reaction!

But very soon, I found myself from the southern part of Africa,

in South Africa -- at the very north, in Egypt.

And I sought out the most remote places.

그리고 저는 오지들을 찾아다녔습니다.

I went to the Siwa Oasis. That was one of my stops.

시와 오아시스에 갔었죠. 제가 머문 곳 중 한 곳입니다.

And the Siwa Oasis is famous for several things,

but the key thing is that it was the place

that Alexander the Great went to

when he wanted to find out what his destiny had in store for him.

And legend has it that Alexander trekked through this desert.

알랙산더 대왕이 이 사막을 지나갔다는 이야기가 있어요.

Half his battalion was wiped out in the sandstorm.

모래 폭풍으로 대대 절반이 사망합니다

And myth says that he had an audience with the oracle,

신화에 따르면 알렉산더 대왕은 신탁을 받았고

and it foretold his destiny of greatness.

그 신탁은 알렉산더 대왕의 위대한 운명을 예언했다고 합니다

This was 300 BC.

그때가 BC 300년입니다

So Africa had long been seen as a place to go to for answers.

Now, the thing I remember about Siwa

was the magical view of the sky at night.

With no natural light source, Siva is one of these amazing places

that when you look up you see a perfect tapestry.

Fast forward to 2002.

2002년으로 시간을 돌려볼까요.

I'm sitting in Cambridge, Massachusetts

저는 지금 매사추세츠주 케임브릿지에서 열리는

at the Healthcare Development Conference.

의료보건 개발 컨퍼런스에 참석하고 있습니다

And I see the same picture, but from the opposite side.

그리고, 똑같은 사진을 보고 있습니다. 하지만 정반대편에서 바라봅니다

A satellite picture looking down at the earth.

지구를 내려다 본 위성사진이었죠.

And it was that picture that made such a profound impact on me

그 사진은 저에게 깊이 각인되었죠

because I'll never forget it. I remember the very moment.

평생 잊지 못할겁니다. 지금도 그 순간을 기억하고 있습니다

And I wanted to share that image with you of what I saw at that point.

그래서 그 때 제가 봤던 사진을 여러분들과 함께 보고 싶네요

The first thing that I saw was North America at night --

제가 처음 본 사진은 저녁에 바라본 북미대륙이었습니다

glowing, in all its glory. A warm feeling. Light.

영광의 불길이 솟아 오르고 따뜻함과 밝은 빛이 보였죠

And then I saw it -- Africa. Quite literally the "Dark Continent."

그 다음에 본 사진이 아프리카였습니다. 정말 말 그대로 "암흑의 대륙"이었죠

And while Africa may be dark,

비록 아프리카가 암흑의 대륙이지만

the thing that brought the message home to me

was that this is the challenge we are facing,

but it's also the opportunity.

Because whilst Africa may be dark -- other than the few specks

that exist north and in the south and other areas --

it's aglow with the light in the hearts

of the millions of people that are there.

Entrepreneurs, dynamic people, people with hope.

기업인들, 진취적인 사람들, 희망에 찬 사람들.

It was George Kimble, the geographer, who said

지리학자 조지 킴블은 이렇게 말했죠,

that, "The only thing dark about Africa is our ignorance of it."

"아프리카에 있어 유일한 어두움은 그 어두움을 우리가 간과하고 있다는 것이다."

So let's start shedding light on this amazing eclectic continent

우리에게 너무도 많은것을 선사하는 자원의 보고

that has so much to offer.

Let's start unpacking it.

Africa is the second-largest continent, a landmass second from Asia.

아프리카는 아시아 다음으로 두번째로 큰 대륙입니다.

It also is the second most populated continent,

그리고 또한 두번째로 인구 밀도가 높은 대륙입니다

with 900 million people.

9억명이 살고 있습니다

In fact -- coming back to the land mass -- Africa is so big

that you could fit in the continental United States,

China, and the entire Europe into Africa, and still have space.

Africa is home to over 1,000 languages --

2,000 is another estimate that's out there --

with over 2,000 languages and dialects.

But you could say, "Invest in Africa in over 1,000 languages,

and it wouldn't make a difference."

What does the data say?

As an investment banker, I'm in the cross-flow of information

and the changes that are taking place in capital markets.

So I want to share with you some of these bellwether signals, or signs,

So let's start on that.

And let's start at the high level, on the macro-factors.

Inflation, in general, is coming down across Africa --

that's the first sign --

in many countries reaching double-digit figures.

So let's start looking at some of those.

I call it my Z.E.N. cluster.

Zambia: from 2004 to 2006, moves from the 18 percent in inflation

Nigeria: a similar situation,

More fascinating, you have other countries -- South Africa,

Mauritius, Namibia -- all in single digits.

But that's just part of the story. You have a similar trend with currencies --

currencies going through an extreme time of stability.

But that's looking at the big picture.

And the first myth to dispel is that Africa is not a country.

It's made up --

It's made up of 53 different countries.

So the very definition -- to say "invest in Africa" is a no-go.

It's meaningless.

Each country has a unique value proposition.

You can make money, you can lose money in Africa.

But opportunities, boy oh boy, they exist.

it's about discussing those very opportunities.

So let's start getting into the countries

I was recently elected, as Emeka mentioned,

So the first port of call: let's talk a little bit about South Africa.

But not the South Africa we always talk about --

the gold, the minerals, the First World infrastructure --

a bit about the other side of it.

For example, South Africa was recently voted as the top destination

for the top 1,000 UK companies for offshore call-centers.

Same language, timeline, et cetera. Makes sense.

Other headlines that have recently reached South Africa

남아공에서 최근 발표된 또 다른 헤드라인은

were Bain Capital and KKR, the big boys of private equity.

거대 사모투자 회사인 베인캐피탈과 KKR에 관한 것이었습니다.

Headline in South Africa: "They have landed." Quite ominous.

"그들이 왔다"라는 헤드라인이 실렸습니다. 상당히 불길하게 들리죠.

But what were they there for? To acquire assets.

무엇 때문에 왔을까요? 자산을 얻기위해서 입니다

Bing Capital's acquisition of Edcon, a large retailer, is testimony

빙 캐피탈이 거대 소매상인 에드콘을 인수한 것은

to the confidence they are starting to place in the economy.

남아공에 진출한다는 확실한 증거입니다

Because it is actually a long-term play.

Being a retailer, it is a play on the belief

that this middle-class that's growing will continue to grow,

But the story of Africa, and my focus, is beyond South Africa

Undoubtedly, Nigeria is clearly a hot spot.

Challenges -- and we will hear a lot about Nigeria in these four days.

What's going on in Nigeria? A couple of things.

It's just a sign of things to come.

Looking at the oil industry, Africa provides 18 percent

It ties in with small-scale farmers

The same for telecoms across the country.

Now let's look at the continent as a whole.

People look at the roads, for example, and they'd say,

It's more expensive to transport goods. Prices of goods go up,

So what are the signs that things are fundamentally changing?

What's going on in some of the other countries?

Let's look at some 2006 numbers. Kenya: over 60 percent. Nigeria: over 40 percent.

South Africa: in the 20 percents. High ones.

What Africa is providing is a diversification play,

Now, when looking at Africa vis-a-vis other things,
