I like to kick things off with a joke because I'm a comedian.

Now there's two things you know about me already:

my name's Hannah and I'm a comedian.

I'm wasting no time.

Here's a third thing you can know about me:

I don't think I'm qualified to speak my own mind.

Bold way to begin a talk, yes,

but it's true.

I've always had a great deal of difficulty

turning my thinking into the talking.

So it seems a bit of a contradiction, then,

that someone like me, who is so bad at the chat,

could be something like a stand-up comedian.

It's what it is.

I first tried my hand at stand-up comedi -- comedie ... See?

I first tried my hand at stand-up comedy

スタンダップ・コメディに 初めて 挑戦したのは

in my late 20s,

20代後半でした

and despite being a pathologically shy virtual mute with low self-esteem

病的なまでにシャイで 文字通り無口で 自尊心が低くて

who'd never held a microphone before,

マイクも握ったことがなかったのに

I knew as soon as I walked and stood in front of the audience,

I knew, before I'd even landed my first joke,

I knew that I really liked stand-up,

and stand-up really liked me.

But for the life of me, I couldn't work out why.

Why is it I could be so good at doing something I was so bad at?

I just couldn't work it out, I could not understand it.

That is, until I could.

やがて理解しました

Now, before I explain to you why it is

さて こんなに苦手なことが

that I can be good at something I'm so bad at,

どうして上手いのかを 説明する前に

let me throw another spanner of contradiction into the work

もうひとつの矛盾も 先に投下しておきますよ

by telling you that not long after I worked out why that was,

この理由が分かってからすぐ

I decided to quit comedy.

コメディから 引退することにしたという話です

And before I explain that little oppositional cat

考え中の皆さんに出した イジワルな問題について

I just threw amongst the thinking pigeons,

なぞ解きをお話しする前に

let me also tell you this:

どうなったかお伝えします

quitting launched my comedy career.

引退したはずが コメディアンとして 人気が出たんです

(Laughter)

Like, really launched it, to the point where after quitting comedy,

コメディを辞めた後に 本当に人気が沸騰して

I became the most talked-about comedian on the planet,

地球上で一番話題の コメディアンになりました

because apparently, I'm even worse at making retirement plans

than I am at speaking my own mind.

引退後の人生設計のほうが さらに下手なようです

Now, all I've done up until this point

さて ここまでお話しする中で

apart from giving over a spattering of biographical detail

ちょっとした自己紹介を除けば

is to tell you indirectly that I have three ideas

今日お話ししたい ３つのアイデアを

that I want to share with you today.

間接的に伝えてきました

And I've done that by way of sharing three contradictions:

３つの矛盾を提示しましたね

one, I am bad at talking, I am good at talking;

ひとつめは「話すのが苦手だけど 話すのが上手い」

I quit, I did not quit.

そして「辞めたけど 辞めなかった」

Three ideas, three contradictions.

３つのアイデアと３つの矛盾です

Now, if you're wondering why there's only two things

３つと言うわりに ２つしかないのはなぜかと

on my so-called list of three --

考えていると思いますが―

(Laughter)

I remind you it is literally a list of contradictions.

それこそが文字通り 矛盾なんです

Now, the folks at TED advised me that with a talk of this length,

TEDの人たちには この長さのトークなら

it's best to stick with just sharing one idea.

I said no.

What would they know?

To explain why I have chosen to ignore what is clearly very good advice,

I want to take you back to the beginning of this talk,

specifically, my palindrome joke.

Now that joke uses my favorite trick of the comedian trade,

the rule of three,

whereby you make a statement

and then back that statement up

with a list.

My entire family have palindromic names:

The first two ideas on that list create a pattern,

and that pattern creates expectation.

And then the third thing -- bam! -- Kayak. What?

That's the rule of three.

One, two, surprise! Ha ha.

Now, the rule of three is not only fundamental to the way I do my craft,

３の法則は私のコメディの 基礎であるだけでなく

it is also fundamental to the way I communicate.

So I won't be changing anything for nobody,

だから何を言われようと TEDのためだって変えはしません

not even TED,

which, I will point out, stands for three ideas:

technology, entertainment

and dickheads.

Works every time, doesn't it?

But you need more than just jokes

とはいえ プロのコメディアンとしては

to be able to cut it as a professional comedian.

You need to be able to walk that fine line between being charming

and disarming.

And I discovered the most effective way to generate the amount of charm I needed

to offset my disarming personality

was through not jokes but stories.

So my stand-up routines are filled with stories:

stories about growing up, my coming out story,

stories about the abuse I've copped for being not only a woman

but a big woman and a masculine-of-center woman.

It's that time in the talk where I shift into second gear,

ここでトークのギアを セカンドに入れて

and I'm going to tell you a story about everything I've just said.

これまで述べてきたことを エピソードでお話しします

In the last few days of her life,

亡くなる前の数日間

my grandma was surrounded by people,

祖母は人々に囲まれていました

a lot of people,

たくさんの人にです

because my grandma was the loving matriarch

うちの祖母は 愛情深い大家族の

of a large and loving family.

愛すべき女家長だったんです

Now, if you haven't made the connection already,

まだお気づきでない方のために言えば

I am a member of that family.

私もその家族の一員です

I was lucky enough to be able to say goodbye to my grandma

幸運なことに 祖母が亡くなるその日に

on the day she died.

お別れを言うことができました

But as she was already cocooned within herself by then,

でも 祖母の意識は すでに遠のきつつあったので

it was something of a one-sided goodbye.

一方的なお別れではありました

So I thought about a lot of things,

そこで 色々と考えました

things I hadn't thought about in a long time,

長いこと考えていなかったようなことを

like the letters I used to write to my grandma

大学入学当初に 祖母に宛てて書いた―

when I first started university,

手紙なんかのことを

letters I filled with funny stories and anecdotes

楽しんでもらえるように ちょっと脚色を加えて

that I embellished for her amusement.

面白いエピソードを たくさん書き連ねました

And I remembered how I couldn't articulate

自分の手には余るほど広い世界で

the anxiety and fear that filled me as I tried to carve my tiny little life

道を切り開こうとするときに

自分の中にあふれる 不安や恐怖については

into a world that felt far too big for me.

上手く伝えられなかったことを 思い出しました

But I remembered finding comfort in those letters,

でも手紙を書くことは 自分の慰めにもなりました

because I wrote them with my grandma in mind.

祖母のことを思って 書いたからです

But as the world got more and more overwhelming

やがて 周りの世界に どんどん圧倒されて

and my ability to negotiate it got worse, not better,

上手く乗り切ることが できなくなっていくと

I stopped writing those letters.

手紙を書くのをやめました

I just didn't think I had the life that Grandma would want to read about.

祖母が手紙で知りたいような生活を 送ってはいないと思ったからです

Grandma did not know I was gay,

祖母は私がゲイであると 知りませんでした

and about six months before she died,

亡くなる半年ほど前に

out of nowhere, she asked me if I had a boyfriend.

突然 彼氏はいるかと 祖母に聞かれました

Now, I remember making a conscious decision in that moment

その瞬間に 祖母には カムアウトしないと

not to come out to my grandmother.

はっきりと決めたのを覚えています

And I did that because I knew her life was drawing to an end,

なぜなら 祖母の命は 尽きようとしており

and my time with her was finite,

限られた時間の中で

and I did not want to talk about the ways we were different.

自分と祖母の違いについては 話したくなかったからです

I wanted to talk about the ways were we connected.

祖母とつながりを感じられる事柄を 話したいと思いました

So I changed the subject.

だから 話題を変えました

And at the time, it felt like the right decision.

その時は 正しい判断に思えました

But as I sat witness to my grandmother's life

でも 祖母の命が 徐々に消えゆくのを

as it tapered to its inevitable end,

座って 目の当たりにしていると

I couldn't help but feel I'd made a mistake

私の人生でこれほど重要なことを

not to share such a significant part of my life.

伝えなかったことが 間違いであるような気持ちになりました

But I also knew that I'd missed my opportunity,

そして その機会を 逸してしまったのだと悟りました

and as Grandma always used to say,

祖母がよく言っていたように

"Ah, well, it's all part of the soup.

「あーあ もうスープに溶けちゃったね

Too late to take the onions out now."

玉ねぎを取り出そうったって もう遅いよ」

(Laughter)

And I thought about that,

その言葉を思い

and I thought about how I had to deal with too many onions

成長するにつれ どれほど多くの「玉ねぎ」に 向き合わねばならなかったかを考えました

as a kid,

growing up gay in a state where homosexuality was illegal.

私が育った州では 同性愛が違法だったからです

And with that thought, I could see how tightly wrapped

そのことと共に 内面化された恥という蔓に

in the tendrils of my own internalized shame I was.

この身をきつく絡め取られていたかが 分かりました

And with that, I thought about all my traumas:

自分が抱える あらゆるトラウマについて考えました

the violence, the abuse, my rape.

暴力 虐待 レイプなどです

And with all that cluster of thinking,

そんな風に色々な思いが 交錯する中で

a thought, a question, kept popping into my mind

ある考え 答えのない問いが

to which I had no answer:

頭に浮かびました

What is the purpose of my human?

私という人間は なぜ存在しているのか？

Out of anyone in my family, I felt the most akin to my grandmother.

家族の中で 祖母は 一番近しい存在でした

I mean, we share the most traits in common.

とても多くの点が共通していました

Not so much these days.

最近はそうでもありません

Death really changes people.

死んだら 人は変わるものですね

But that --

でも ―

(Laughter)

（笑）

is my grandmother's sense of humor.

これも祖母譲りのユーモアです

But the person I felt most akin to in the world

私がこの世界で 一番近しく感じた存在は

was a mother, a grandmother, a great-grandmother,

母であり 祖母であり 曾祖母であり

a great-great-grandmother.

高祖母でもある人でした

Me? I represented the very end of my branch of the family tree.

私といえば― 家系図では 私もある枝の一番先っぽですが

And I wasn't entirely sure I was still connected to the trunk.

幹との繋がりが残っているのかさえ 怪しいものでした

What was the purpose of my human?

私という人間は なぜ存在しているのか？

The year after my grandmother's death was the most intensely creative

祖母の亡くなった翌年は 人生で最高にクリエイティブな年でした

of my life.

And I suppose that's because, at an end, my thoughts gather

思うに その頃には 考えがあちこちに散らばらず

more than they scatter.

まとまってきたからでしょう

My thought process is not linear.

私の思考プロセスは 直線的ではありません

I'm a visual thinker. I see my thoughts.

視覚的に考えるので 思考が目に浮かぶのです

I don't have a photographic memory,

写真のように 正確な記憶力はありませんし

and nor is my head a static gallery of sensibly collected think pieces.

思考が頭の中の棚に 整然と並んでいるわけでもありません

It's more that I've got this ever-evolving language of hieroglyphics

どちらかと言うと自分で考案した 日々進化していく象形文字の言語があって

that I've developed

and can understand fluently and think deeply with.

それで物事をよく理解したり 深く考えたりできるのです

but I struggle to translate.

でも翻訳するのは至難の業です

I can't paint, draw, sculpt, or even haberdash,

絵を描くのも 彫刻も 手芸さえも上手くないし

and as for the written word,

文章を書くのは

I'm OK at it but it's a tortuous process of translation,

そこそこできますが 考えを翻訳する過程には苦しめられ

and I don't feel it does the job.

上手に表現できているとも 思えないのです

And as far as speaking my own mind, like I said, I'm not great at it.

先程言ったとおり 考えを話すのも さほど上手くありません

Speech has always felt like an inadequate freeze-frame

話すのは 自分の内側にある命を 下手くそに捉えた―

for the life inside of me.

All this to say,

何が言いたいかというと

I've always understood far more than I've ever been able to communicate.

これまで常に 自分が伝えられる以上に 深く理解してきたということです

Now, about a year before Grandma died,

祖母が亡くなる前の年

I was formally diagnosed with autism.

私は正式に自閉症だと 診断されました

Now for me, that was mostly good news.

私にとって これは 概ね良い知らせでした

I always thought that I couldn't sort my life out like a normal person

それまでずっと 自分が 普通の人のような生活ができないのは

because I was depressed and anxious.

鬱状態で不安神経症だからだと 思っていたんです

But it turns out

でも 実際には

I was depressed and anxious

鬱状態で不安神経症だったのは

because I couldn't sort my life out like a normal person,

普通の人のような生活が 送れないからで

because I was not a normal person,

and I didn't know it.

Now, this is not to say I still don't struggle.

もう苦労がないと いうわけでありません

Every day is a bit of a struggle,

正直に言って 毎日 何かと大変です

to be honest.

でも 少なくとも その苦労の正体を知っているし

But at least now I know what my struggle is,

and getting to the starting line of normal is not it.

それは普通の人になろうと することではありません

My struggle is not to escape the storm.

嵐から逃れようと 努力するのではなく

My struggle is to find the eye of the storm as best I can.

できるだけ上手く 台風の目を見つけるのです

Now, apart from the usual way us spectrum types find our calm --

自閉症スペクトラムの人たちが 平穏を得る方法には

repetitive behaviors, routine and obsessive thinking --

反復行動や決まった手順 強迫的思考などがありますが

I have another surprising doorway into the eye of the storm:

台風の目につながる 意表をついた扉が私にはあります

stand-up comedy.

スタンダップ・コメディです

And if you need any more proof I'm neurodivergent, yes,

私が定型発達していないという こんな証拠もあります

I am calm doing a thing that scares the hell out of most people.

ほとんどの人が恐れることで 私は落ち着くんです

I'm almost dead inside up here.

舞台では死んだように冷静ですよ

(Laughter)

Diagnosis gave me a framework on which to hang bits of me

診断を受けたおかげで 自分では理解できなかったような

I could never understand.

My misfit suddenly had a fit,

and for a while, I got giddy with a newfound confidence

I had in my thinking.

But after Grandma died, that confidence took a dive,

because thinking is how I grieve.

And in that grief of thought,

I could suddenly see with so much clarity

just how profoundly isolated I was and always had been.

What was the purpose of my human?

I began to think a lot about how autism and PTSD have so much in common.

自閉症とPTSDには共通点が 多くあると考えるようになりました

And I started to worry,

because I had both.

Could I ever untangle them?

２つを解きほぐすことは できるのだろうか？

I'd always been told that the way out of trauma

was through a cohesive narrative.

I had a cohesive narrative,

but I was still at the mercy of my traumas.

They're all part of my soup, but the onions still stung.

And at that point, I realized

that I'd been telling my stories for laughs.

I'd been trimming away the darkness, cutting away the pain

and holding on to my trauma for the comfort of my audience.

自分のトラウマに執着して 観客を喜ばせてきました

I was connecting other people through laughs,

他の人々を笑いで ひとつにする一方で

yet I remained profoundly disconnected.

私自身は深く切り離されていたのです

What was the purpose of my human?

私という人間は なぜ存在しているのか？

I did not have an answer,

答えは分からないながらも

but I had an idea.

アイデアはありました

I had an idea to tell my truth,

私の真実を伝えたら どうかと思いました

all of it,

私のすべてを

not to share laughs but to share the literal, visceral pain of my trauma.

笑わせるのではなく 私のトラウマを― 文字通り 心の底からの痛みを伝えるのです

And I thought the best way to do that would be through a comedy show.

そのためにはコメディ番組が 適していると思いました

And that is what I did.

そこで 実行したのです

I wrote a comedy show that did not respect the punchline,

私はオチにこだわらない コメディを書きました

that line where comedians are expected and trusted to pull their punches

コメディアンは オチの 程良い一撃で 笑わせることが

and turn them into tickles.

期待されるのですが

I did not stop.

私はオチで終わらせず

I punched through that line

突き抜けるような一撃を

into the metaphorical guts of my audience.

視聴者の 腹にズシンと 打ち込んだのです

I did not want to make them laugh.

笑わせたかったのではありません

I wanted to take their breath away,

息をのませるような

to shock them,

衝撃を与えれば

so they could listen to my story and hold my pain

視聴者は 私の話を聴いて 個人として痛みを受け止めるはずなのです

as individuals, not as a mindless, laughing mob.

思考せず ただ笑うだけの群衆では なくなるはずです

And that's what I did, and I called that show "Nanette."

それが実現しました 『ナネット』というタイトルです

Now, many --

さて 多くの ―

(Applause)

Now, many have argued

さて 多くの人が

that "Nanette" is not a comedy show.

『ナネット』は コメディではないと言いました

And while I can agree "Nanette" is definitely not a comedy show,

『ナネット』が コメディ番組ではないことは認めますが

those people are still wrong --

皆 間違っています

(Laughter)

because they have framed their argument

なぜなら 人々の論調は

as a way of saying I failed to do comedy.

「コメディがすべった」 というものだからです

I did not fail to do comedy.

コメディがすべったのではありません

I took everything I knew about comedy --

私はコメディについての知識を 総動員しました

all the tricks, the tools, the know-how --

テクニックも方法も ノウハウもすべてを

I took all that, and with it, I broke comedy.

すべてを使った上で コメディをぶっ壊したんです

You cannot break comedy with comedy

コメディがすべっていたら コメディでコメディを

if you fail at comedy.

ぶっ壊せません

Flaccid be thy hammer.

ピコピコハンマーじゃ駄目なのです

(Laughter) (Applause)

That was not my point.

破壊が目的ではありません

The point was not simply to break comedy.

単にコメディを 破壊したかったのではなく

The point was to break comedy so I could rebuild it and reshape it,

目的は コメディを破壊して 再構築することでした

reform it into something that could better hold everything

伝えたい内容をすべて 盛り込めるような

I needed to share,

より良いものに 作りかえること ―

and that is what I meant when I said I quit comedy.

だからこそ 「コメディから引退」と 言ったんです

Now, it's probably at this point where you're going, "Yeah, cool,

さて そろそろ こう思う頃ですね 「ふうん 分かった

but what are the three ideas, exactly?

でも３つのアイデアって 結局何なの？

It's a bit vague."

よくわかんない」

I'm glad I pretended you asked.

聞かれたことにさせてください

(Laughter)

Now, I'm sure there's quite a few of you who have already identified three ideas.

３つのアイデアがお分かりの人も 結構いるんじゃないでしょうか

A smart crowd, by all accounts,

どう考えても 賢い人の集まりですから

so I wouldn't be surprised at all.

驚くにはあたりません

But you might be surprised to find out that I don't have three ideas.

でも３つのアイデアなんかないと聞けば 驚くかもしれませんね

I told you I had three ideas, and that was a lie.

３つのアイデアがあると 言ったのは嘘です

That was pure misdirection -- I'm very funny.

まったくのでっちあげです 私 変わり者なんです

What I've done instead is I've taken whole handfuls of my ideas as seeds,

今 やってみたのは 様々なアイデアを種として

and I've scattered them all throughout my talk.

トーク全体に 種を蒔いたんです

And why did I do that?

なぜ そんなことをしたかって？

Well, apart from shits and giggles,

笑わせるためを除けば

it comes down to something my grandma always used to say.

祖母がよく言っていた ある言葉に尽きます

"It's not the garden, it's the gardening that counts."

「大事なのは庭じゃなくて 庭仕事だ」

And "Nanette" taught me the truth to that truism.

それが本当だと 『ナネット』が教えてくれました

I fully expected by breaking the contract of comedy

コメディの決まり事を破ることや

and telling my story in all its truth and pain

真実と痛みをそのままに 自分の話をすることで

that that would push me further into the margins of both life and art.

人生においてもアートにおいても 自らを周縁に押しやることは重々承知でした

I expected that, and I was willing to pay that cost in order to tell my truth.

分かった上で 真実を伝えるために 自ら犠牲を払う覚悟でした

But that is not what happened.

でも そうはなりませんでした

The world did not push me away. It pulled me closer.

世界は私を押しやらずに 近くに引き寄せてくれたんです

Through an act of disconnection, I found connection.

自らを切り離すことで 繋がりを見いだしました

And it took me a long time to understand

そう理解するまでには 時間がかかりました

that what is at the heart of that contradiction

その矛盾の核心は

is also at the heart of the contradiction

これほど苦手なことが とても得意なのはなぜかという

as to why I can be so good at something I am so bad at.

別の矛盾の核心でもあります

You see, in the real world,

実生活では

I struggle to talk to people

人に話しかけるのが苦手です

because my neurodiversity makes it difficult for me to think,

脳の多様性の中で 私は 考えたり 耳を傾けたり 話したり

listen, speak and process new information

because, strictly speaking, I'm reciting.

So all that is left

観客と真に繋がるために

to make a genuine connection with my audience.

And if the experience of "Nanette" taught me anything,

『ナネット』から 学んだことがあるとしたら

it's that connection depends not just on me.

繋がりは私だけが 作るものではないということです

"Nanette" may have begun in me,

『ナネット』が私の内から 生まれたものであったとしても

but she now lives and grows in a whole world of other minds,

あのキャラクターは 世界中の人々の頭の中に生きています

minds I do not share.

私ではない他者ですが

But I trust I am connected.

私と繋がっていると思います

And in that, she is so much bigger than me,

ですから ナネットは 私よりずっと大きい存在で

just like the purpose of being human is so much bigger than all of us.

人間として存在する目的が 私たちよりずっと大きいのと同じです
