In Kenya, buses are commonly known as "matatus."

بە گشتی لە کینیا پاسەکان بە “ماتاتۆس” ناودەبرێن.

They're everywhere -- and I mean everywhere.

لە هەر هەموو شوێنێک هەن.

And they form a very crucial part of Kenyans' urban life.

بەشێکی هەرە گرنگی ژیانی هاوڵاتیانی کینیا پێکدەهێنن.

They're fun, colorfully painted buses

ئەوان بە دڵخۆشییەوە پاسەکانیان رەنگاوڕەنگ دەکەن

with graffiti that depicts what is going on in Kenya

لەگەڵ وێنەی سەر دیوارەکان کە پێت دەڵێت چی دەگوزەرێت لە کینیا

and the world at large.

و جیهان بە گشتی.

They're informal and affordable ways for Kenyans to get around

ئەوانە رێگای نایاسایی و گونجاون بۆ خەڵکی کینیا تا پێی بگەن بە دەوروبەریان

and are used by the vast majority as the main mode of transportation.

But they have a couple of flaws.

They can be a bit too loud,

drive on the wrong side of the road

to avoid traffic

بۆ خۆدزینەوە لە هاتوچۆ(ترافیک)

and can be inaccessible for women, children and people with disabilities.

دەکرێ ئافرەت، منداڵ و خەڵکی کەمئەندام نەتوانن جێبەجێی بکەن.

Back in the 90s, my family was in the matatu business

بگەرێوە بۆ ساڵی ٩٠ەکان، خێزانەکەم لە بازرگانی مەتاتو بوو

and ran a popular graffiti matatu called "Gridlock'd."

و وێنەیەکی بەناوبانگی ماتاتویان دەکرد کە پێی دەگوترا “گریدلۆکد”.

"Gridlock'd" was an American black comedy film

“گریدلۆکد” فیلمێکی پێکەنیناوی ڕەشپێستە ئەمەریکییەکان بوو

starring the popular rapper Tupac Shakur.

راپەری بەناوبانگ توپاک شاکور ئەستێرەی فیلمەکە بوو.

My uncles loved Tupac, and as a result,

لە کۆتایدا، خاڵەکانم توپاکیان خۆشویست،

I can still sing along to most of his songs.

من هێشتا دەتوانم زۆربەی گۆرانیەکانی بڵێم.

Seven years ago, I stepped into the family business,

حەوت ساڵ لەمەوبەر، من دەستم بە کار کردن کرد لەگەڵ خێزانەکەم،

and I brought a twist with me -- a feminist perspective.

پیشەگەرێکی زیرەک و ئافرەتێکی دیارم، کە بەرگری لە مافی ژنان دەکات، هێنایە لای خۆم.

And this is what informs this perspective:

ئەمە ئەو شتەیە کە ئەو تێڕوانینە ئاشکرا دەکات:

women all over the world face sexual harassment while using public transport.

لە هەموو جیهان ئافرەتان توشی گێچەڵی سێکسی دەبن، لەکاتی بەکارهێنانی گواستنەوەی گشتی.

In Kenya, 88 percent of women have experienced harassment

لە کینیا، سەتا ٨٨ی ئافرەتان گێچەڵیان پێ کراوە

while using public transportation.

لەکاتی بەکارهێنانی گواستنەوەی گشتی.

Unfortunately, we Kenyans are not alone.

بەداخەوە کە ئەنە تەنها لە کینیا روونادات.

In a 2014 study conducted in the US,

لە توێژینەوەیەکی ٢٠١٤ کە لە ئەمەریکا ئەنجامدرا،

public transportation was the second-most common place

for street harassment.

This percentage is even higher in Cairo, Egypt,

where a whopping 95 percent of women have experienced harassment

while using public transportation.

This percentage ranges all over the world,

but there's not a single transport system

where women do not face this type of harassment.

This leads to a massive financial loss for women,

ئەمە دەبێتە هۆی زیانێکی گەورەی دارایی بۆ ئافرەتان،

more commute time as they try to avoid dangerous routes,

زۆربەی هەوڵەکانیان بۆ خۆ لادانە لەو رێگا مەترسیدارانە،

and eventually, they drop out of a system that isn't built for them

لە کۆتایدا، دەکرێنە دەرەوەی سیستەمەکە کە بۆئەوان بەردەست نابێت

and doesn't cater to their travel needs.

So instead of women using affordable

بۆیە لەجیاتی بەکارهێنانی گواستنەوەیەکی گشتی

and environmentally sustainable public transportation

گونجاو بۆ ئافرەتان و لە ژینگەیەکی جێگیر

to work, school and social events,

بۆ کارکردن، خوێندن و بۆنە کۆمەڵایەتییەکان،

they use their hard-earned and saved monies

ئەوان ماندوو بوونی خۆیان بەکاردەهێنن بۆ بەردەوام بوون لە کارەکانیان

on safer but much more expensive means of transportation

سەلامەتترە بەڵام پارەیەکی زیاتری دەوێت، بەواتای گواستنەوەیە

that leaves them out of building savings to ensure financial independence.

کە لە سیستەمە گواستنەوەییەکان دەردەکرێن و لە رووی داراییەوە مسۆگەر نابن.

I cringe when newspaper headlines read, "Let's get rid of matatus,"

کاتێک کە سەردێری رۆژنامەکان دەخوێنمەوە، شەرم دەکەم، “با مەتاتوس رزگاربکەین،”

because millions of commuters would be stranded

لەبەرئەوەی ملیۆنەها گەشتیار رێیان لێ دەگیرێت

and thousands of youths unemployed.

و هەزارەها گەنجیش بێکار بوون.

They say, "The system doesn't work. Let's get rid of it."

ئەوان دەڵێن، “سیستەمەکە کارناکات، با رزگاری بکەین لەو نەهامەتییە.”

But I say no.

بەڵام من دەڵێم نەخێر.

We have a lot to work with, and we need to put in the work.

ئێمە زۆرمان هەیە بۆئەوەی سوودی لێ ببینین، و پێویستە لەسەر کاریان دابنێین.

For the past seven years,

لە ماوەی ٧ ساڵی رابردوو،

we've worked with over 1,000+ public transport operators,

من لەگەڵ زیاتر لە ١٠٠٠ بەڕێوبەری گواستنەوە گشتییەکان کردووە،

2,000 transport stakeholders

٢٠٠٠ خاوەن گواستنەوە(پاس)

and over 150 women professionals in the industry.

The interventions that have yielded great impact are driven by research findings

and working with public transport organizations

to change the existing systems.

One way we are doing this is by offering trainings

on how to improve commuter experience.

لەسەرئەوەی چۆن پەرە بە ئەزموونی رێبوارەکان بدەین.

For example, it used to be that buses would unexpectedly change their route

بۆ نموونە، ئەو پاسانە واراهاتوون کە بە شێوەیەکی چاوەڕواننەکراو رێچکەی خۆیان بگۆڕن

either to avoid traffic

یان بۆ خۆ دزینەوە لە ترافیک

or the police,

یان پۆلیس

and women would find themselves in totally unknown neighborhoods.

بەگشتی ئافرەتان خۆیان لە گەڕەکە نەزاندراوەکان دەدۆزنەوە.

But now, buses are required to display their route map,

بەڵام ئێستا پێویستیان بە پاسەکان هەیە بۆ دیاری کردنی رێڕەوەکانیان،

fare charts

کرێی هێڵکارییەکان

and contact details of how and whom to report any incidences.

وردەکارییەکان بۆ تۆمارکردنی هەر رێژەیەک، چۆن و کێش.

We've also been actively recruiting and shining a spotlight

چالاکانە دەستمان کردووە بە دروستکردن و درەوشانەوەی مەیدانەکە

on women professionals working in the industry

ئەو ئافرەتە پیشەگەرانەی کە کاردەکەن لە پیشەسازی

so more women can join.

کەواتە ئافرەتی زیاتر دەتوانن بەشداربن.

When more women work in the industry, they are in positions to make changes.

کاتێک رێژەیەکی زیاتر کاردەکەن لە پیشەسازی، ئەوان لەو جێگایەن بۆ دروستکردبی گۆڕانکاری.

So we've created a community, and an active network

بۆیە، ئێمە کۆمەڵگایەک و دەزگایەکمان دروستکردووە

of women professionals working in the Nairobi metropolitan area

لەو ئافرەتە پیشەگەرانەی کە لە ناوجەرگەی نایرۆبی کاردەکەن

who meet regularly and attend professional development courses.

کە بەشێوەیەکی رێک و پێک ئامادەی خولەکانی پەرەدان بە پیشەگەری.

Women who are joining the industry have a real voice now.

We have a stronger network,

more and more expertise,

and more money is being put into researching gender-based violence

that plagues women as they go about their day.

So instead of getting rid of matatus,

بۆیە لەجیاتی رزگارکردنی مەتاتوس،

let's understand travel habits.

با لە نەریتەکانی گەشت کردن تێبگەین.

Let's train on how to improve commuter experience.

با راهێنان بکەین لەسەر چۆنیەتی باشتر کردنی شارەزایی رێبوارەکان.

Let's change behavior.

با رەفتار و رەوشت بگۆڕین.

Let's train on and adopt sexual harassment policies,

با راهێنان بکەین، چۆن سیاسەتی گێچەڵی سێکسی نەهێڵین،

and let's hire a more diverse workforce.

با هەلی کاری هەمەجۆرتر بەردەست بخەین.

Just like myself and my family,

رێک وەک من و خێزانەکەم،

I believe public transportation can be the preferred mode of transport

من پێم وایە، گواستنەوەی گشتی دەکرێ شێوازێکی پەسەند بێت بۆ گواستنەوە

and workplace for millions of Kenyans.

و شوێنی کار بێت بۆ ملیۆنەها کینیایی.
