A few years ago, I found myself in Kigali, Rwanda

presenting a plan to bring off-grid solar electricity

to 10 million low-income East Africans.

As I waited to speak to the president and his ministers,

بينما كنتُ أنتظرُ لأتحدّث إلى الرئيس ووزرائه،

I thought about how I'd arrived in that same place 30 years before.

فكّرتُ كيف تسنّى لي الوصول إلى نفس هذا المكان قبل 30 سنة.

A 25-year-old who left her career in banking

امرأة في الـ25 من العمر تترك مهنتها في مجال البنوك

to cofound the nation's first microfinance bank

للمشاركة في تأسيس أوّل بنك تمويل دولي صغير

with a small group of Rwandan women.

مع مجموعة صغيرة من النساء الروانديات.

And that happened just a few months after women had gained the right

ولقد حدثَ ذلك بعدَ عدّة شهور فقط مِن حصول النّساء على حق

to open a bank account without their husband's signature.

Just before I got on stage,

قبل أنْ أصعد على المسرح،

a young woman approached me.

اقتربتْ منّي شابّة صغيرة.

"Ms. Novogratz," she said,

قالتْ: "آنسة نوفوغراتز،"

"I think you knew my auntie."

"أعتقد أنّك كنتِ تعرفين عمّتي."

"Really?

"حقًّا؟

What was her name?"

ما كان اسمها؟"

She said, "Felicula."

قالتْ: "فيليكولا."

I could feel tears well.

استطعتُ أنْ أشعر بالدُّموع تملأ عيناي.

One of the first women parliamentarians in the country,

واحدةٌ من أوائل النساء البرلمانيّات في البَلَد،

Felicula was a cofounder,

كانت فيليكولا أحد المؤسّسين،

but soon after we'd established the bank,

ولكنْ بعد فترة وجيزة من تأسيس البنك،

Felicula was killed in a mysterious hit-and-run accident.

قُتِلت فيليكولا في حادث اصطدام غامض.

Some associated her death to a policy she had sponsored

نسبَ البعض سبب وفاتها إلى سياسةٍ قد رعتها

to abolish bride price,

لإلغاء مهر العروس،

or the practice of paying a man for the hand of his daughter in marriage.

أو ممارسة دفع النّقود للأب من أجل طلب يد ابنته للزواج.

I was devastated by her death.

كنتُ مصدومةً بوفاتها.

And then a few years after that,

وبعد عدّة سنوات من ذلك،

after I'd left the country,

بعد مغادرتي البَلَد،

Rwanda exploded in genocide.

تفشَّت الإبادات الجماعيّة في رواندا.

And I have to admit there were times

وإنّني أعترفُ أنّه كانتْ تمرّ عليّ أوقات

when I thought about all the work so many had done,

أفكّر فيها بكلّ الجُهد الّذي بذلَه الكثير من النّاس،

and I wondered what it had amounted to.

وتساءلتُ ما الّذي حسّنه ذلك الجهد.

I turned back to the woman.

التفتُّ إلى المرأة.

"I'm sorry, would you tell me who you are again?"

"أنا أعتذر، هل يمكنكِ إخباري من أنتِ مرّةً أُخرى؟"

She said, "Yes, my name is Monique,

قالتْ: "نعم، اسمي مونيك،

and I'm the deputy governor of Rwanda's National Bank."

وأنا نائبة مدير بنك رواندا الوطني."

If you had told me when we were just getting started

لو أخبرتني عندما كنّا في بداية عملنا

that within a single generation,

ضمن جيلٍ واحد،

a young woman will go on to help lead her nation's financial sector,

بأنَّ شابّة صغيرة ستستمرّ لتمدَّ يد العون في قيادة القطاع الاقتصادي لبلدها،

I'm not sure I would have believed you.

لست متأكّدة في أنّني كنتُ لأصدَّقك.

And I understood that I was back in that same place

وفهمتُ بأنّني عدتُ إلى نفس ذلك المكان

to continue work Felicula had started but could not complete in her lifetime.

لإكمال العمل الّذي بدأتْ فيليكولا به ولكنّها لم تستطع أنْ تنهيَه في حياتها.

And that it was to me to recommit

وأنّه كان يتوجّب علي أنْ أكرّس نفسي مجددًا

to dreams so big I might not complete them in mine.

لأحلام كبيرة جدًّا قد لا أحققها قبل وفاتي.

That night I decided to write a letter to the next generation

تلك الليلة قرّرتُ أنْ أكتبَ رسالةً إلى الجيل القادم

because so many have passed on their wisdom and knowledge to me,

لأنّه قد نَقلَ الكثير من النّاس حكمتهم ومعرفتهم إليّ،

because I feel a growing sense of urgency

لأنّني أحسُّ بشعورٍ متعاظمٍ من الإلحاح

that I might not finish the work I came to do,

بأنّني قد لا أنهي العمل الذي أتيتُ لعمله،

and because I want to pass that forward

ولأنّني أردتُ نقل ذلك

to everyone who wants to create change in this world

إلى كل الأشخاص الّذين يريدون أنْ يُحدِثوا تغييرًا في هذا العالم

in ways that only they can do.

بطرقٍ هم فقط يمكنهم عملها.

That generation is in the streets.

ذلك الجيل هو في الطّرقات.

They are crying urgently for wholesale change

إنّهم يجلجلون بإصرار لتغييرٍ جذريّ

against racial injustice,

ضدّ الظلم العنصري،

religious and ethnic persecution,

والاضطهاد الديني والعنصري،

catastrophic climate change

والتغيّر المناخي الكارثي

and the cruel inequality that has left us more divided

والظّلم القاسي الّذي تركنا أكثر فُرْقَةً

and divisive than ever in my lifetime.

وتشتّتًا من أيّ وقتٍ في حياتي.

But what would I say to them?

ولكنْ ماذا سأقول لهم؟

I'm a builder, so I started by focusing on technical fixes,

أنا بنّاءة، لذا بدأتُ بالتّركيز على الإصلاحات التقنيّة،

but our problems are too interdependent,

ولكنَّ مشاكلنا تعوّل كثيرًا على بعضها

too entangled.

وتتشابك كثيرًا مع بعضها.

We need more than a system shift.

نحتاجُ إلى أكثر منْ تغيير النّظام.

We need a mind shift.

نحتاج إلى تغيير طريقة التفكير.

Plato wrote that a country cultivates what it honors.

كتبَ أفلاطون أنَّ البَلَد يحصدُ ما يقدّره.

For too long, we have defined success based on money, power and fame.

لوقتٍ طويل، قمنا بتعريف النّجاح بالاعتماد على المال والقوة والشّهرة.

Now we have to start the hard, long work of moral revolution.

يجب أنْ نبدأ الآن بالعمل المضني والطّويل للتطوّر الأخلاقي.

By that I mean putting our shared humanity

ما أعنيه بذلك هو وضع إنسانيّتنا المشتركة

and the sustainability of the earth at the center of our systems,

وازدهار الأرض في مركز أنظمتنا.

and prioritizing the collective we,

وإعطاء الأولويّة للجماعة،

not the individual I.

لا للفرد.

What if each of us gave more to the world than we took from it?

ماذا لو أعطى كلُّ واحدٍ منا للعالم أكثر مما يأخذ منه؟

Everything would change.

كل شيء سيتغيّر.

Now cynics might say that sounds too idealistic,

قد يقول المتشائمون الآن أنَّ ذلك يبدو مثاليًا،

but cynics don't create the future.

ولكنَّ المتشائمين لا يصنعون المستقبل.

And though I've learned the folly of unbridled optimism,

وعلى الرّغم من أنّني تعلّمتُ حماقة الأمل الجامح،

I stand with those who hold to hard-edged hope.

فإنّني أقفُ إلى جانب أولئك الّذين يتمسّكون بالأمل الرّاسخ.

I know that change is possible.

أنا أعلم أنَّ التغيير ممكن.

The entrepreneurs and change agents with whom my team and I have worked

روّاد الأعمال ووكلاء التّغيير الّذين عملتُ أنا وفريقي معهم

have impacted more than 300 million low-income people,

قاموا بالتّأثير على أكثر من 300 مليون شخص من ذوي الدخل المنخفض،

and sometimes reshaped entire sectors to include the poor.

وأحيانًا قاموا بإعادة تشكيل قطاعات بأكملها لتشملَ الفقراء.

But you can't really talk about moral revolution

ولكنّك لا تستطيع التحدّث عن التطوّر الأخلاقي

without grounding it in practicality and meaning,

and that requires an entirely new set of operating principles.

Let me share just three.

دعوني أشارك ثلاثة فقط.

The first is moral imagination.

أولًا: التخيّل الأخلاقي.

Too often we use the lens only of our own imagination,

نحن نستخدمُ في غالب الأحيان العدسات فقط لمخيّلتنا الخاصة بنا،

even when designing solutions

حتى عند التخطيط لحلول

for people whose lives are completely different from our own.

لأناسٍ حياتهم مختلفة تمامًا عن حياتنا.

Moral imagination starts by seeing others as equal to ourselves,

يبدأ التّخيّل الأخلاقي عندما نرى أنفسنا والآخرين سواسية،

neither above nor below us,

لا أعلى ولا أقل منّا،

neither idealizing nor victimizing.

لا نمجّدهم ولا نؤذيهم.

It requires immersing in the lives of others,

هذا يتطلّب الغوص في حياة الآخرين،

understanding the structures that get in their way

فَهْم العواقب التي تعترض سبيلهم

and being honest about where they might be holding themselves back.

والتّحلّي بالصدق حول الموضع الّذي يمكن أنْ ينكصوا فيه على أعقابهم.

That requires deep listening from a place of inquiry,

هذا يتطلّب إنصاتًا عميقًا من مكان الاستفسار،

not certainty.

وليس اليقين.

Several years ago I sat with a group of women weavers

منذ عدة سنوات جلستُ مع مجموعة من النساء الحائكات

outside in a rural village in Pakistan.

في الخارج في قرية ريفيّة في باكستان.

The day was hot ...

كان اليوم حارًّا...

over 120 degrees in the shade.

أعلى من 120 درجة في الظلّ.

I wanted to tell the women about a company my organization had invested in

كنتُ أريد إخبار النساء عن شركة استثمرتْ فيها مؤسستنا

that was bringing solar light to millions of people across India and East Africa,

وهي جَلْب الإضاءة الشمسية لملايين الناس في الهند وشرق إفريقيا،

and I had seen the transformative power of that light

وقد رأيتٌ الطاقة التحويليّة لذلك الضوء

to allow people to do things so many of us just take for granted.

ليسمحَ للناس بالقيام بأعمالٍ مفروغ منها من قبل الكثير منّا.

"We have this light" I said,

قلتُ: "لدينا هذا الضوء"

"costs about seven dollars.

"يكلّف حوالي سبعة دولارات.

People say it's amazing.

يقول النّاس إنّه رائع.

If we could convince the company to bring those products to Pakistan,

إذا استطعنا إقناع الشركة لجَلْب كل هذه البضائع إلى باكستان،

would you all be interested?"

هل سيهمّكم الأمر جميعًا؟"

The women stared,

حدّقت النساء بي،

and then a big woman whose hands knew hard work looked at me,

وبعدها نظرَتْ إليَّ امرأةٌ كبيرة تبدو على يديها سيماء العمل المضني،

wiped the sweat off her face and said,

مسحتْ العرق عن وجهها وقالتْ:

"We don't want a light.

"لا نريد ضوء.

We're hot.

نحن نشعرُ بالحرّ.

Bring us a fan."

اجلبي لنا مِروحَة."

"Fan," I said.

قلتُ: "مِروحَة،"

"We don't have a fan.

"ليس لدينا مِروحَة.

We have a light.

لدينا ضوء.

لكنْ إذا كنتِ تملكين هذا الضوء، فسيتمكن أطفالك من الدّراسة ليلًا،

But if you had this light, your kids can study at night,

you can work more -- "

يمكنكم أنْ تعملوا أكثر..."

She cut me off.

قامتْ بمقاطعتي.

"We work enough. We're hot.

"نحن نعمل بما فيه الكفاية. إنّنا نشعر بالحر.

Bring us a fan."

اجلبي لنا مِروحَة."

That straight-talking conversation deepened my moral imagination.

تلك المحادثة الصريحة عمّقت مخيّلتي الأخلاقيّة.

And I remember lying --

وأتذكّر نفسي وأنا مستلقية...

sweltering in my bed in my tiny guest house that night,

وأنا أتصبّبُ عرقًا في سريري في منزل الضيافة الخاص بي تلك الليلة،

so grateful for the clickety-clack of the fan overhead.

ممتنّة لصوت طقطقة المروحة فوقي.

And I thought, "Of course.

وفكّرتُ مع نفسي: "بالطبع.

Electricity.

كهرباء.

A fan.

مِروحَة.

Dignity."

كرامة."

And when I now visit our companies

وعندما أزور شركاتنا الآن

who've reached over 100 million people with light and electricity

التي زودت 100 مليون إنسان بالضوء والكهرباء

and it's a really hot place,

وفي مكان حار جدًّا،

and if there's a rooftop system,

وإذا كان هناك نظام للسقف،

there is also a fan.

فإنَّ هناك مِروحَة أيضًا.

But moral imagination is also needed to rebuild and heal our countries.

ولكنّنا نحتاج إلى التخيّل الأخلاقي أيضًا لنعيد بناء بلادنا ونشفيها.

My nation is roiling as it finally confronts

إنَّ أمّتي يتكدّر مزاجها عندما تواجه في النهاية

what it's not wanted to see.

ما لا تريد أنْ تراه.

It would be impossible to deny the legacy of American slavery

سيكون من المستحيل إنكار إرث العبودية الأمريكية

if all of us truly immersed in the lives of Black people.

إذا غُصنا جميعًا بصدق في حياة السُّود.

Every nation begins the process of healing

كل أمة تبدأ عملية الشفاء

when its people begin to see each other

عندما يبدأ شعبها بالنظر لبعضهم البعض

and to understand that it is in that work that are planted the seeds

of our individual and collective transformation.

Now that requires acknowledging the light and shadow,

the good and evil that exist in every human being.

In our world we have to learn to partner with those

في عالمنا يجب أنْ نتعلّم أنْ نتشارك

even whom we consider our adversaries.

مع أولئك الّذين نعتبرهم خصومنا حتّى.

This leads to the second principle:

هذا يقودنا إلى المبدأ الثاني:

holding opposing values in tension.

إبقاء القيم المتعارضة في حالة توتر.

Too many of our leaders today stand on one corner or the other,

العديد من قُوَّادنا اليوم يقفون في زاويةٍ أو أخرى،

shouting.

ويصرخون.

Moral leaders reject the wall of either-or.

القادة الأخلاقيّون يرفضون عائق إما-أو.

They're willing to acknowledge a truth or even a partial truth

إنّهم على استعداد للاعتراف بالحقيقة أو جزء من الحقيقة

in what the other side believes.

بما يؤمن به الطرف الآخر.

And they gain trust by making principled decisions

ويكتسبون الثقة من خلال اتخاذ قرارات مبدئية

in service of other people,

تصب في خدمة الناس،

not themselves.

لا في خدمة أنفسهم.

To succeed in my work has required holding the tension

تطلّبَ النّجاح في عملي إبقاء التّوتّر

between the power of markets to enable innovation and prosperity

بين قوّة الأسواق للسماح بالابتكار والازدهار

and their peril to allow for exclusion

وبين مخاطرها للسماح بالاستبعاد

and sometimes exploitation.

وفي بعض الأحيان بالاستغلال.

Those who see the sole purpose of business as profit

أولئك الّذين يرَون الغرض الوحيد للعمل هو الربح

are not comfortable with that tension,

يكونون غير مرتاحِين لذلك التوتر،

nor are those who have no trust in business at all.

But standing on either side negates the creative, generative potential

of learning to use markets without being seduced by them.

Take chocolate.

لنأخذ الشوكولاتة كمثال.

It's a hundred-billion-dollar industry

إنّها صناعة تكلّف مئة مليار دولار

dependent on the labor of about five million smallholder farming families

تعتمد على عمل حوالي خمسة ملايين من العائلات أصحاب المزارع الصغيرة

who receive only a tiny fraction of that 100 billion.

والّذين يتلقّون نسبة ضئيلة فقط من المئة مليار تلك.

In fact, 90 percent of them make under two dollars a day.

في الحقيقة، 90 بالمئة منهم يتلقّون أقل من دولارين باليوم.

But there's a generation of new entrepreneurs

لكن هناك جيل من روّاد الأعمال الجدُدْ

that is trying to change that.

الّذين يحاولون تغيير ذلك.

They start by understanding the production costs of the farmers.

إنهم يبدؤون بفهم تكاليف الإنتاج للمزارعين.

They agree to a price that allows the farmers to actually earn income

إنهم يتّفقون على سعر يسمح للمزارعين باكتساب دخل

in a way that will sustain their lives.

بطريقةٍ تمكّنهم من البقاء على قيد الحياة.

Sometimes including revenue-share and ownership models,

أحيانًا يضم ذلك تقاسم الإيرادات ونماذج الملكيّة،

building a community of trust.

بناء مجتمع يثق أفراده ببعضم.

Now are these companies as profitable

as those that focus solely on shareholder value?

Possibly not in the short term.

But these entrepreneurs are focused on solving problems.

They're tired of easy slogans like "doing well by doing good."

لقد سئموا من الشعارات السهلة مثل "افعلْ الخير، تنجحْ في حياتك".

They know they have to be financially sustainable,

إنّهم يعلمون أنّه يجب عليهم أنْ يكونوا مدعومين ماليًّا.

and they are insisting on including the poor and the vulnerable

وهم يصرّون على إشراك الفقراء والضعفاء

in their definition of success.

في تعريفهم للنجاح.

And that brings me to the third principle:

وهذا يقودني إلى المبدأ الثالث:

accompaniment.

المصاحبة.

It's actually a Jesuit term that means to walk alongside:

إنّه في الحقيقة مصطلح يسوعي يعني المشي جنبًا إلى جنب:

I'll hold a mirror to you, help you see your potential,

سأحمل مرآةً لك لأساعدك في رؤية إمكاناتك،

maybe more than you see it yourself.

ربما أكثر مما تراها بنفسك.

I'll take on your problem but I can't solve it for you --

سوف أبدي رأيي حول مشكلتك لكنّني لا أستطيع حلها لك...

that you have to learn to do.

هذا شيء يجب أنْ تتعلم فعله.

For example, in Harlem there's an organization

مثلًا، في هارلم هناك منظّمة

called City Health Works

تدعى City Health Works

that hires local residents

توظّف القاطنين المحليّين

with no previous health care experience,

بدون خبرة رعاية صحية سابقة،

trains them to work with other residents

تقوم بتدريبهم للعمل مع السكان الآخرين

so that they can better control chronic diseases like gout,

ليتمكنوا من التحكم بشكل أفضل بالأمراض المزمنة مثل: النقرس

hypertension, diabetes.

وفرط ضغط الدم والسكري.

I had the great pleasure of meeting Destini Belton,

أسعَدَنِي جدَّا مقابلة ديستيني بيلتون

one of the health workers,

- واحدة من موظفي الصحة -

who explained her job to me.

والتي شرحتْ عملها لي.

She said that she checks in on clients,

قالتْ إنّها تتفقّد العملاء،

checks their vital signs,

تتفقّد إشاراتهم الحيويّة،

takes them grocery shopping,

تأخذهم للتسوّق في البقالة،

goes on long walks,

تمشي معهم لمسافات طويلة،

has conversations.

تتحدث معهم.

She told me, "I let them know somebody has their back."

أخبرتني: "لقد جعلتهم يعرفون أنَّ شخصًا يسند ظهرهم."

And the results have been astounding.

ولقد كانتْ النتائج مذهلة.

Patients are healthier, hospitals less burdened.

أصبح المرضى أكثر صحةً، وخفَّ العبء على المشافي.

As for Destini,

وبالنسبة لديستيني،

she tells me her family and she are healthier.

إنّها تخبرني أنّها هي وعائلتها أكثر صحةً.

"And," she adds, "I love that I get to contribute to my community."

وأضافت: "إنّني أحبُّ أنْ أشارك في مجتمعي."

All of us yearn to be seen,

وكلّنا نصبو إلى أنْ نكون محطّ الأنظار،

to count.

أنْ يُشار إلينا بالبَنانْ.

The work of change,

إنَّ مهمّة التغيير،

of moral revolution,

التطوّر الأخلاقي،

is hard.

صعبة.

But we don't change in the easy times.

ولكنّنا لا نتغيّر في الأوقات السّارّة.

We change in the difficult times.

نحن نتغيّر في الأوقات الصّعبة.

In fact, I've come to see discomfort as a proxy for progress.

في الحقيقة، لقد بدأتُ بالنظر إلى المشقّة على أنّها وكيل التقّدم.

But there's one more thing.

ولكنْ هناك شيء آخر.

There's something I wish I'd known when I was just starting out

هناك شيء أتمنّى لو كنتُ أعرفه عندما بدأتُ

so many years ago.

منذ عدة سنوات.

No matter how hard it gets,

بغض النظر عن مدى صعوبة الأمر،

there's always beauty to be found.

فإنَّ هناك دائمًا جمالًا يمكن العثور عليه.

I remember now what seems a long time ago,

spending an entire day talking to woman after woman

in the Mathare Valley slum in Nairobi, Kenya.

في حي وادي ماثار الفقير في نيروبي، كينيا.

I listened to their stories of struggle and survival

as they talked about losing children,

وهم يتحدّثون عن فقدهم الأطفال،

of fighting violence and hunger,

ومحاربة العنف والجوع،

sometimes feeling like they wouldn't even survive.

ينتابهم أحيانًا شعور عدم مقدرتهم على النّجاة.

And right before I left,

وقبل مغادرتي بقليل،

a huge rainstorm poured down.

هبّت عاصفة مطريّة ضخمة.

And I was sitting in my little car as the wheels stuck in the mud

وكنتُ جالسةً في سيّارتي الصغيرة حيث كانت العجلات عالقةً في الوحل

thinking, "I'm never getting out of here,"

وكنتُ أفكر: "لن يتسنى لي الخروج من هنا أبدًا،"

when suddenly there was a tap on my window --

وبينما أنا كذلك إذ بي أتفاجأ بطرقٍ على النافذة...

a woman who was beckoning me to follow her,

كان هناك امرأةً تومئ إليّ لأتبعها،

and I did.

وفعلتُ ذلك.

Jumped out through the rainstorm,

we went down this little muddy path,

through a rickety metal door,

inside a shack

where a group of women were dancing with abandon.

I jumped in and found myself lost in the rhythm and the color and the smiles

وإذْ بي أنضمُّ إليهن وأجد نفسي ضائعةً في الإيقاع واللون والابتسامات

and suddenly I realized:

وأدركتُ فجأةً:

this is what we do as human beings.

هذا ما نفعله كبَشَر.

When we're broken,

عندما نشعرُ بالانكسار،

انظروا إلى انفجار الفن والموسيقى والشعر

في هذه اللحظة من أزمتنا الجماعية.

It is in the darkest times

إنّنا في أحلكِ الأوقات

that we have the chance to find our deepest beauty.

نملكُ فرصةَ إيجاد جمالنا الأعْمق.

So let this be our moment

لذا دعوا تلك تكون لحظتنا

to move forward

للتقدّم إلى الأمام

with the fierce urgency of a new generation

مع الإلحاح الشّديد لجيلٍ جديد

fortified with our most profound and collective wisdom.

محصّن بحكمتنا الأعمق والأجمع.
