Belle Gibson was a happy young Australian.

She lived in Perth, and she loved skateboarding.

But Belle's story was a lie.

People shared her story without ever checking if it was true.

This is a classic example of confirmation bias.

We accept a story uncritically if it confirms what we'd like to be true.

The Oxford Dictionary's word of 2016 was "post-truth."

And the recognition that we now live in a post-truth world

has led to a much needed emphasis on checking the facts.

Well, let's look at one of the most fundamental techniques in statistics.

It's called Bayesian inference.

And the very simple version is this:

We care about "does the data support the theory?"

Does the data increase our belief that the theory is true?

Now, let's look at this for Belle's story.

So the biggest problem with Belle's story is not that it was false.

It's that it's only one story.

There might be thousands of other stories where diet alone failed,

We accept a fact as data.

The biggest problem is not that we live in a post-truth world;

Let me explain.

A classic study by psychologist Peter Wason

Confirmation bias is not only about failing to search for new data,

And this applies outside the lab to important, real-world problems.

Finding out that you're wrong

So, what have we learned?

So, what do you do?

Let me give you three tips.

The first is to actively seek other viewpoints.

Read and listen to people you flagrantly disagree with.

Some banks suffered from groupthink,

A dissenting viewpoint is something to learn from

Which takes us to the other forgotten terms in Bayesian inference.

Because data allows you to learn,

but learning is only relative to a starting point.

If you started with complete certainty that your pet theory must be true,

Tip number two is "listen to experts."

Now, that's perhaps the most unpopular advice that I could give you.

British politician Michael Gove famously said that people in this country

So we respect a teeth-whitening formula discovered by a mom,

A second reason why experts are not trusted

Half of these so-called experts will be wrong.

Or at best, make claims that the evidence doesn't actually support.

So we can't just take an expert's word for it.

Now, academic evidence is not everything.

Real-world experience is critical, also.

And peer review is not perfect, mistakes are made.

But it's better to go with something checked

لكن الأفضل هو إختيار شيء قد فُحص

than something unchecked.

If we latch onto a study because we like the findings,

اذا دعمنا دراسة ما لأننا استحسنا إستنتاجاتها

without considering who it's by or whether it's even been vetted,

دون الأخذ بعين الإعتبار من كتبها أو حتى هل تم فحصها،

there is a massive chance that that study is misleading.

هناك فرصة كبيرة أن هذه الدراسة خاطئة

And those of us who claim to be experts

وأولئك من يدّعون منا انهم خبراء

should recognize the limitations of our analysis.

يجب عليهم ان يدركون حدود تحاليلنا

Very rarely is it possible to prove or predict something with certainty,

نادراً جداً ما يمكن إثبات أو التنبؤ بشيء ما على وجه اليقين

yet it's so tempting to make a sweeping, unqualified statement.

لكن اختلاق بيان عام وغير كفء مغرٍ جداً

It's easier to turn into a headline or to be tweeted in 140 characters.

من السهل جداً أن تكون في العناوين الرئيسية أو أن يُغرّد فيك من 140 حرف

But even evidence may not be proof.

لكن حتى الأدلة قد لا تكون اثباتاً

It may not be universal, it may not apply in every setting.

قد لا تكون شاملة، قد لا تنطبق على كل الأوضاع

So don't say, "Red wine causes longer life,"

لذا، لا تقل " النبيذ الأحمر يسبب حياة أطول،"

when the evidence is only that red wine is correlated with longer life.

عندما يقول الدليل أن النبيذ الأحمر مرتبط مع الحياة الطويلة

And only then in people who exercise as well.

و فقط عند الناس الذين يمارسون الرياضة أيضاً.

Tip number three is "pause before sharing anything."

النصيحة الثالثة هي: "توقف قليلاً قبل مشاركة أي شيء"

The Hippocratic oath says, "First, do no harm."

يقول قسَم أبقراط: "أولاً، لا تضر أحداً"

What we share is potentially contagious,

ما نشاركه محتملا أن يكون معدياً

so be very careful about what we spread.

لذا كن حذراً جداً حول ما تنشر.

Our goal should not be to get likes or retweets.

هدفنا يجب ألّا يكون الحصول على إعجابات أو إعادة تغريدات

Otherwise, we only share the consensus; we don't challenge anyone's thinking.

وإلا سنشارك فقط ما عليه إجماع الناس, و لن نتحدى فكرة أي شخص

Otherwise, we only share what sounds good,

و إمّا سنشارك ما يبدو جيداً فقط

regardless of whether it's evidence.

بغض النظر عن أدلته

Instead, we should ask the following:

بدلاً من هذا، يجب علينا سؤال الآتي:

If it's a story, is it true?

إذا كانت قصة، هل هي حقيقية؟

If it's true, is it backed up by large-scale evidence?

إذا كانت حقيقية، هل هي مدعّمة ببيانات واسعة النطاق؟

If it is, who is it by, what are their credentials?

وإن كانت كذلك، من كتبها، وما مقدار أهلية الكاتب؟

Is it published, how rigorous is the journal?

هل نُشرت، ما مدى صرامة الصحيفة؟

And ask yourself the million-dollar question:

واسأل نفسك سؤال المليون دولار:

If the same study was written by the same authors with the same credentials

إذا كتبت نفس القصة من قبل نفس الكتاب بنفس أهليّتهم،

but found the opposite results,

ولكن النتائج كانت العكس

would you still be willing to believe it and to share it?

هل ما زلت على استعداد ان تصدقها وتشاركها؟

Treating any problem --

حل أي مشكلة --

a nation's economic problem or an individual's health problem,

مشكلة إقتصادية لأمة ما أو مشكلة صحية لشخص ما

is difficult.

صعب.

So we must ensure that we have the very best evidence to guide us.

لذا، يجب علينا التأكد أن لدينا أفضل الأدلة لتقودنا

Only if it's true can it be fact.

فقط في حالة كونها صحيحة، هي حقيقية

Only if it's representative can it be data.

فقط في حالة أنها نموذجية، هي بيانات

Only if it's supportive can it be evidence.

فقط في حالة كونها داعمة، هي أدلة

And only with evidence can we move from a post-truth world

وفقط مع الأدلة نستطيع أن ننتقل من عالم ما وراء الحقيقة

to a pro-truth world.
