When I was 12 years old,

But there is a paradox here,

We know what AI and climate change

I call this the illusion of continuity.

And I think one reason this happens is that when we look backwards,

I want to make the case to you today

Let me introduce you to John and Stephanie Rinka.

Fast-forward a couple of decades.

Now, you might argue that if Stephanie had written out an advance directive,

And the ethical problem is that Stephanie, at age 39, as she was healthy,

Philosophers have talked for many years about a thought experiment;

You and I are walking examples of the ship of Theseus.

You know, I have the illusion that 12-year-old Shankar

Let's set aside the philosophical questions for another day,

and let me tell you about some of the practical challenges

When we make promises to other people,

I have three pieces of advice

on how to wrestle with this wicked problem.

The first piece of advice I have

is if you accept the idea that you're going to be a different person

أو أحدث نفسي قائلًا لا أعتقد أنني أستطيع أن أتعلم آلة موسيقية

at the age of 52.

في عمر الـ52.

Or I tell myself I don't have it in me to look after a disabled child.

أو أحدث نفسي لا أعتقد أنني أستطيع الاعتناء بطفل عاجز.

What we really should be saying

بل ما ينبغي علينا أن نقوله هو

is "I don't have the capacity to do those things today.

" ليس لدي القدرة لفعل هذه الأشياء اليوم.

That doesn’t mean I won’t have the capacity to do those things tomorrow.”

وهذا لا يعني أنني لن يكون لدي القدرة لفعلهم مستقبلًا.”

So lesson number three is to be brave.

إذن فالدرس الثالث هو كن شجاعًا.

I believe if you can do these three things,

أؤمن بأنكم لو تمكنتم من فعل هذه الثلاثة

if you can stay curious,

لو استطعت أن تكون فضولي،

you can practice humility and you can be brave,

يمكنك أن تتواضع وأن تكون شجاعًا

then your future self will look back at you

فتنظر نفسك المستقبلية إليك

in 20 or 30 years --

في خلال 20 أو 30 عامًا

will look back,

تنظر إليك

not with resentment or bewilderment,

ليس بكراهية وبحيرة شديدة

but will look back at you and say:

بل تنظر إليك وتقول:

"Thank you."

" شكرًا لك”
