Hercules, the strongest man alive

For untold times these heroes had roamed ancient Greece,

creating new legends wherever they went.

But none of their adventures was so great as when they joined forces

for the sake of a young man named Jason.

Years before,

Jason’s uncle Pelias had ruthlessly usurped

the throne of Thessaly from Jason’s grandfather.

When Jason returned to his father’s stolen court,

the cowardly king set him a seemingly impossible task:

cross the teeming seas to Colchis,

and steal the golden fleece of a flying ram

If Jason retrieved the Fleece,

Pelias promised to relinquish the throne.

Touched by his heroic mission,

이아손은 당당히 명을 받았고

the Gods spread Jason’s call for help,

and soon he had assembled a not-so-motley crew.

These heroes,

여러 선원과 예지자 반신반인들도 합류했습니다.

alongside countless sailors, soothsayers, and rebel demigods,

named themselves the Argonauts after their sturdy ship.

But the path ahead was marked with untold terrors–

하지만 앞길이 험난했죠.

enough to test even the fiercest heroes.

제아무리 용맹한 영웅이라도 쉽지 않았을 겁니다.

Their first stop was Lemnos,

첫 행선지 렘노스 섬의 여인들은 남자를 모조리 죽였습니다.

an isle of women who had killed all the island’s men.

As punishment,

아프로디테가 이에 노해 악취를 풍기는 벌을 내렸습니다.

Aphrodite had cursed them with a sickening stench–

but that didn’t stop Jason fathering twins with the queen.

그런데도 이아손은 렘노스의 여왕과 쌍둥이를 낳았죠.

The rest of the crew also found themselves embroiled in new romances;

원정대원 모두가 렘노스 여인과 사랑에 빠졌습니다.

until Hercules chastised them for not behaving like heroes.

영웅답지 못하다며 헤라클레스가 원정대를 꾸짖었으나

Eventually, they sailed on to the Mount of Bears,

마침내 아르고호의 선원들은 곰의 산에 다다릅니다.

an island where a group of ancient, six-armed monsters

이곳에는 팔이 6개인 괴물들이 살고 있었습니다.

lived alongside the peaceful Doliones.

평화로운 돌리오네스족도 여기 살고 있었죠.

While the clan welcomed the Argonauts with open arms,

돌라이오네스족은 아르고 원정대를 반겼습니다.

the monsters surged down from the mountains

하지만 괴물들이 산에서 몰려 내려오며

and hurled rocks at the docked ship.

정박한 아르고호에 바위를 던졌고

Hercules held them off single-handedly,

헤라클레스가 혼자서 괴물들을 상대했습니다.

before his comrades joined the fray.

곧 나머지 대원들도 난투극에 가담했죠.

Bolstered by their victory, the triumphant heroes sailed onward–

원정대는 승리에 도취되어 항해를 이어갔습니다.

only to be blown back to the island several stormy nights later.

하지만 거센 비바람에 다시 같은 섬으로 밀려왔습니다.

In the tempest,

폭풍 속에서 돌리오네스족은 이들을 침략자로 착각했습니다.

the Doliones thought these new arrivals invaders.

The Argonauts were similarly unaware of their surroundings,

아르고 원정대 역시 자신이 어느 곳에 있는지 몰랐으므로

and fought blunderingly in the dark, slaying wave after wave of foe.

어둠 속에서 닥치는 대로 휘두르며 싸웠습니다.

But the morning light revealed a horrible truth:

아침이 오자 참혹한 현실이 드러났죠.

their victims were none other than their previous hosts.

따뜻이 맞아 주었던 돌리오네스족은 주검이 되었습니다.

Yet again,

이아손은 원정대를 제대로 단속하지 못한 이유로

Jason had allowed the crew to be distracted,

this time at a terrible cost.

그 대가를 톡톡히 치렀습니다.

Ashamed at his conduct,

이아손은 수치스러워하며 양털을 찾는 데 집중하려 했지만

he resolved to focus only on the Fleece,

but even this haste proved ruinous.

서두른 탓에 또 일을 그르칩니다.

When Hercules’ squire was abducted by a water nymph,

헤라클레스가 아끼던 소년이 물의 요정에게 납치당하는 바람에

Jason sailed on–

헤라클레스는 원정대에서 빠졌지만 이아손은 항해를 계속했고

oblivious to the absence of his most powerful crewmate.

The remaining Argonauts continued their quest,

나머지 선원들도 원정을 이어갔죠.

until stopping at the sight

이번에는 하피 무리에 둘러싸인 예지자 피네우스를 만났는데

of an old man surrounded by a swirl of harpies.

This was Phineas, a seer cursed by Zeus

그는 제우스의 노여움을 사서 젊음과 시력을 잃었으며

to endure old age, blindness, and endless torture

천기를 누설했다는 이유로 하피에게 끝없이 고문을 당했습니다.

for giving away his prophecies.

Moved by his plight, the wind brothers set upon the flock,

이를 불쌍히 여겨 보레아스 형제가 하피 떼를 쫓았습니다.

providing Phineas with a brief respite from his punishment.

덕분에 피네우스는 잠시나마 형벌에서 벗어났죠.

In return,

the seer told them how to overcome the terrifying trial that lay ahead:

은혜에 보답하고자, 피네우스는 원정대에 앞으로 있을 역경을 알려줬는데

the Symplegades,

배를 침몰시키는 암초 심플레가데스를 만날 것이라고 했죠.

a pair clashing rocks that reduced ships to splinters.

But first,

그보다 먼저 아르고 원정대는 지옥의 입을 지나쳐야 했습니다.

the Argonauts would have to maneuver past the mouth of hell,

around the island of the bloodthirsty Amazons,

몽환적인 하늘 아래 피에 굶주린 아마존강 섬에 있었죠.

and under psychedelic skies.

These adventures cost the crew both in men and morale–

대원들이 죽어 나갔고 사기는 바닥에 떨어졌습니다.

and some feared they might be losing their minds.

미쳐 버릴지도 모른다는 공포도 밀려왔으며

Upon reaching the clashing rocks, the exhausted crew quaked with fear.

심플레가데스에 접근하자 지친 대원들은 두려움에 떨었습니다.

But Phineas’ advice rang in their heads.

하지만 피네우스의 예언이 생각났죠.

The Argonauts released a single dove

아르고 원정대는 비둘기 한 마리를 날린 후

and sped through in its wake to emerge unscathed.

새를 따라 노를 저었고 무사히 암초를 빠져나왔습니다.

With this narrow escape,

심플레가데스를 벗어나자 눈앞에 콜키스가 보였습니다.

the Argonauts finally had Colchis in their sights.

Yet while Jason rested and celebrated with his crew,

이아손은 한숨 돌리고 원정대와 기쁨을 나눴지만

he could feel his time among them was drawing to a close.

그런 와중에서 때가 왔음을 직감했습니다.

As the fleece gleamed in his mind,

반짝이는 양털이 뇌리를 스치면서

he knew he would have to retrieve it alone.

혼자 양털을 되찾아야 하는 것은 알았지만

But he could not guess that this final task

실마리도 없었고
