زۆر کەس حەز لە خواردنی پیتزا دەکەن،

Pretty much everyone loves eating pizza,

بەڵام دەکرێت کارێکی خراپ بێت.

but it can be a messy business.

پیتزا نەرمە و توانای چەمانەوەی هەیە .

Pizza is soft and bendable.

کەواتە چۆن دەتوانی ئەو هەموو پەنیرانە بوەستێنی لە کەوتنە خوارەوە؟

So how can you stop all that cheese from falling off?

You might know some tricks:

لەوانەیە هەندێک فێڵ بزانیت:

دەتوانی هەردوو دەستت بەکاربهێنی -زۆر نەریتی نییە،

you can use two hands -- not so classy,

or you can use a paper plate

یان دەتوانی قاپی کاغەزی بەکاربهێنیت

and allow only the tip of the pizza to peek out.

و تەنها ڕێگە بە سەری پیتزاکە بدەیت دەرکەوێت.

There's one other trick, though:

فێڵێکی تر هەیە، هەرچەندە:

گرتنی پارچەکە، دەتوانیت بەجۆرێک بێت کە لە ناوەراستەوە لولی بدەیت.

holding the crust, you can sort of fold the slice down the middle.

Now the tip of the pizza isn't falling over,

ئێستا لایەکی پیتزاکە ناکەوێتە سەر زەوی،

and you can eat it without getting tomato sauce all over yourself

و دەتوانیت بیخۆیت بەبێ ئەوەی سۆسی تەماتە بکەوێت بەسەرتدا

or accidentally biting off some of that paper plate.

But why should the tip stay up just because you bent the crust?

To understand this, you need to know two things:

بۆ تێگەشتن لەمە ، پێویستە دوو شت بزانیت :

a little bit about the math of curved shapes

کەمێک دەربارەی بیرکاری شێوە چەماوەکان

and a little about the physics of thin sheets.

First, the math.

Suppose I have a flat sheet made out of rubber.

It's really thin and bendable, so it's easy to roll into a cylinder.

بەڕاستی باریک و چەماوەیە، بۆیە ئاسانە بۆ لولدان بۆ ناو لولەکێک.

I don't need to stretch the sheet at all, just bend it.

پێویست ناکات بەهیچ جۆرێک پەڕەکە درێژبکەمەوە ، تەنها دەیچەمێنمەوە.

This property where one shape can be transformed into another

ئەم تایبەتمەندییە کە یەک شێوە دەکرێت بگۆرێت بۆ شێوەیەکی تر.

without stretching or crumpling, is called isometry.

بەبێ درێژکردنەوە یان وردکردن پێیدەگوترێ هاوپێوانەی.

A mathematician would say that a flat sheet is isometric to a cylinder.

بیرکاریزانێک دەڵێت پەڕەی تەخت هاوپێوانەییە بۆ لولەک.

بەڵام هەموو شێوەکان هاوپێوانەی نین.

But not all shapes are isometric.

If I try to turn my flat sheet into part of a sphere,

ئەگەر هەوڵبدەم پەڕە تەختەکەم بگۆڕم بۆ بەشێک لە گۆ،

there's no way I can do it.

هیچ ڕێگایەک نییە کە بتوانم بیکەم.

You can check this for yourself,

دەتوانی ئەوە تاقی بکەیتەوە بۆ خۆت،

by trying to fit a flat sheet of paper onto a soccer ball

بە هەوڵدان بۆ خستنە ناوەوەی پەڕەیەکی تەختی کاغەز بۆ ناو تۆپێکی پێ

without stretching or crumpling the paper.

بە بێ درێژکردنەوە یان وردکردنی کاغەزەکە.

It's just not possible.

ئەوە ناکرێت.

So a mathematician would say

بۆیە بیرکاریزانێک دەڵێت

that a flat sheet and a sphere aren't isometric.

کە پەڕەی تەخت و گۆ هاوپێوانەی نین.

There's one more familiar shape that isn't isometric

لە شتێک زیاتر هەیە کە شێوەی ڕێک نییە

بۆ هەر یەکێک لەو شێوانەی کە تا ئێستا بینیومانن: پارچە پەتاتەیەک.

to any of the shapes we've seen so far: a potato chip.

Potato chip shapes aren't isometric to flat sheets.

شێوەکانی پارچە پەتاتە هاوپێوانەی نین بۆ پەڕە تەختەکان.

If you want to get a flat piece of rubber into the shape of a potato chip,

ئەگەر دەتەوێت پارچە پەتاتەی رێکت دەستکەوێت،

you need to stretch it -- not just bend it, but stretch it as well.

پێویستت بەوەیە درێژی بکەیت- نەک تەنها بیچەمێنیتەوە، درێژیشی بکەیت.

So, that's the math.

کەواتە ، ئەمە بیرکاریە

Not so hard, right?

زۆر سەخت نییە، ئەی وانیە؟

Now for the physics.

ئێستا بۆ فیزیا.

It can be summed up in one sentence:

دەکرێت لە یەک رستەدا کۆبکرێتەوە :

Thin sheets are easy to bend but hard to stretch.

پەڕە باریکەکان ئاسانن بۆ چەماندنەوە بەڵام قورسن بۆ درێژکردنەوە.

This is really important.

ئەمە زۆر گرنگە.

Thin sheets are easy to bend but hard to stretch.

لە بیرتە کاتێک کە ئێمە پەڕەی لاستیکە تەختەکەمان لولدا بۆ ناو لولەکێک؟

Remember when we rolled our flat sheet of rubber into a cylinder?

ئەو شتە قورس نەبوو، ئەی وانیە؟

That wasn't hard, right?

But imagine how hard you'd have pull on the sheet

بەڵام خەیاڵ بکە چەند ئەستەم دەبێت ڕاکێشانی لەسەر کاغەزەکە

to increase its area by 10 percent.

بۆ زیادکردنی ئەو ناوچەیە بەڕێژەی لە سەدا ۱۰.

It would be pretty difficult.

زۆر قورس دەبێت.

The point is that bending a thin sheet

ئامانجەکە ئەوەیە کە چەماندنەوەی پەڕە باریکەکە

takes a relatively small amount of force,

بڕێکی کەم لە هێز وەردەگرێت،

but stretching or crumbling a thin sheet is much harder.

بەڵام درێژکردنەوە یان وردکردنی پەڕێکی باریک زۆر قورسترە.

Now, finally, we get to talk about pizza.

ئێستا ، لە کۆتایدا دەتوانین قسە لەسەر پیتزا بکەین.

وا دابنێ کە دەچیتە خوارەوە بۆ پیتزاخانەکە، پارچە پیتزایەک بۆ خۆت دەکڕیت.

Suppose you go down to the pizzeria and buy yourself a slice.

You pick it up from the crust, first, without doing the fold.

سەرەتا بەشێکی پیتزاکە هەڵدەگریت ، بەبێ لولدان.

بەهۆی هێزی کێشکردن، پارچەکە بەرەو خوار دەچەمێتەوە.

Because of gravity, the slice bends downwards.

دوای هەموو شتێک، پیتزا زۆر باریکە،

Pizza is pretty thin, after all,

و دەزانین کە پەڕە باریکەکان ئاسانن بۆ چەمانەوە.

and we know that thin sheets are easy to bend.

ناتوانیت بیکەیتە ناو دەمت،

You can't get it in your mouth,

پەنیر و سۆسی تەماتەکە لە هەموولایەک دەکەونە خوارەوە- ئەمە زۆر خراپە.

cheese and tomato sauce dripping everywhere -- it's a big mess.

بۆیە کە پارچەکە لول دەدەیت.

So you fold the crust.

When you do, you force the pizza into something like a taco shape.

کاتێک ئەوە دەکەیت، تۆ زۆر لە پیتزاکە دەکەیت بۆ ئەوەی شێوەی تاکۆ وەربگرێت.

کە گران نییە بۆ ئەنجامدان- لە دوای هەموو ئەمانە، ئەم شێوەیە هاوپێوانەییە

That's not hard to do -- after all, this shape is isometric

to the original pizza, which was flat.

بۆ پیتزا بنچینەیەکە، کە تەخت بوو.

But imagine what would happen if the pizza were to droop down

بەڵام بێنە پێش چاوت چی روودەدات ئەگەر پیتزاکە شۆڕبوبایەوە خوارەوە.

while you're bending it.

لە کاتێکدا دەینوشتێنیتەوە.

Now it looks like a droopy taco.

ئێستا وەکو تاکۆیەکی شۆڕبووە دەردەکەوێت.

And what does a droopy taco look like? A potato chip!

و تاکۆیەکی شۆڕبووە چۆن دەردەکەوێت؟ پارچەیەک پەتاتە!

But we know that potato chips are not isometric to flat pieces of rubber

بەڵام دەزانین کە پارچە پەتاتەکان هاوپێوانەی نین بۆ پارچە لاستیکیە تەختەکان.

or flat pizzas,

یان پیتزا تەختەکان،

and that means that in order to get into the shape it's in now,

و ئەنجامدانی ئەوەش بۆ وەرگرتنی شێوەی ئێستایەتی،

the slice of pizza had to stretch.

پارچە پیتزاکە دەبوایە درێژبووبایەوە.

Since the pizza is thin, this takes a lot of force,

لەبەرئەوەی پیتزاکە باریکە، پێویستی بە هێزێکی زۆرە،

compared to the amount of force it takes

بە بەراورد بەو بڕە هێزەی کە دەیبات

to bend the pizza in the first place.

So, what's the conclusion?

کەواتە، دەرئەنجامەکە چییە؟

When you fold the pizza at the crust,

کاتێک پارچە پیتزاکە لول دەدەیت،

you make it into a shape where a lot of force is needed to bend the tip down.

تۆ دەیکەیتە شێوەیەک کە هێزێکی زۆری پێویستە بۆ ئەوەی بەشێکی بەرەو خوارەوە بچەمێتەوە.

Often gravity isn't strong enough to provide this force.

زۆرجار هێزی کێشکردن ئەوەندە بەهێز نییە بۆ پێدانی ئەم هێزە.

That was kind of a lot of information,

ئەوە جۆرێک بوو لە زانیاری،

so let's do a quick backwards recap.

When pizza is folded at the crust,

کاتێک پارچە پیتزاکەمان لولدابوو،

gravity isn't strong enough to bend the tip.

هێزی ڕاکێشان ئەوەندە بەهێز نەبوو کە سەرەکەی بچەمێنێتەوە.

Why? Because stretching a pizza is hard.

بۆچی؟ چونکە درێژکردنەوەی پیتزا سەختە.

And to bend the tip downwards, the pizza would have to stretch,

و بۆ ئەوەی لێوارەکە بەرەو خوار بچەمێتەوە، پێویستە پیتزاکە درێژبکرێت،

because the shape the pizza would be in,

لەبەرئەوەی ئەو شێوەیەیی پیتزاکە،

the droopy taco shape,

isn't isometric to the original flat pizza.

هاوپێوانەی نییە بۆ پیتزای تەختی ڕاستەقینە.

Why? Because of math.

بۆچی؟ لەبەر بیرکاری

وەک نموونەی پیتزاکە نیشانی دەدات، کە دەتوانین زۆر شت فێرببین.

As the pizza example shows, we can learn a lot

by looking at the mathematical properties of different shapes.

بە سەیرکردنی تایبەتمەندییە بیرکاریەکانی شێوە جیاوازەکان.

And it's especially nice when those shapes happen to be pizza slices.
