Stingy and Frugal Difference, Meaning, and Pronunciation with Example English Sentences

And in this video, I'm going to talk about  two expressions that describe how people use, 

และในวิดีโอนี้ ผมจะพูดถึงสองสำนวนที่อธิบายวิธีที่ผู้คนใช้

or control money.

One is positive. And one is negative. All right. 

หนึ่งเป็นบวก และอันหนึ่งเป็นลบ เอาล่ะ.

So these two adjectives, the first one,  we're going to talk about, is ‘stingy’. 

ดังนั้น คำคุณศัพท์สองคำนี้ คำแรกที่เราจะพูดถึงคือ 'ตระหนี่'

Okay. Now, let's focus on the pronunciation first. 

ตกลง. ตอนนี้เรามาดูเรื่องการออกเสียงกันก่อน

‘stingy’ A lot of my students mistakenly say ‘stingee’. 

'ตระหนี่' นักเรียนของฉันหลายคนเข้าใจผิดว่า 'ตระหนี่'

Okay. You got to be very careful. 

ตกลง. คุณต้องระวังให้มาก

It is pronounced ‘stingy’. And what does stingy mean? 

ออกเสียงว่า 'ขี้เหนียว' และตระหนี่หมายถึงอะไร?

Well, someone who is stingy -  they don't like to spend money. 

คือคนที่ตระหนี่-ไม่ชอบใช้เงิน

They don't like to share money. Okay. 

พวกเขาไม่ชอบแบ่งปันเงิน ตกลง.

They are very greedy. They are not generous. 

พวกเขามีความโลภมาก พวกเขาไม่ใจกว้าง

They are exactly like Scrooge. You may have, you may have heard,

or know about Scrooge. He is a very stingy guy.

He does not want to share any of his money. All right, so, to help us understand stingy

a little bit better, let's look  at a few example sentences.

Okay. So the first example for stingy. 

ตกลง. ตัวอย่างแรกสำหรับคนตระหนี่

He doesn't want to give his  son bus money. He is stingy. 

เขาไม่ต้องการให้เงินรถบัสแก่ลูกชาย เขาขี้เหนียว

Alright, so, yeah, this father doesn't  want to give his son any bus money. 

เอาล่ะ ใช่แล้ว พ่อคนนี้ไม่อยากให้เงินค่ารถบัสแก่ลูกชาย

Okay. That's a very stingy guy. Let's look at the next example. 

ตกลง. นั่นเป็นผู้ชายที่ขี้เหนียวมาก ลองดูตัวอย่างถัดไป

I was so thirsty, but my sister  wouldn't buy me water. She's stingy. 

ฉันกระหายน้ำมาก แต่พี่สาวไม่ยอมซื้อน้ำให้ฉัน เธอขี้เหนียว

Okay, again, my sister very bad. I'm so thirsty, but she wouldn't  

เอาล่ะอีกครั้งพี่สาวของฉันแย่มาก ฉันกระหายน้ำมาก แต่เธอไม่ยอม

buy me even water. Yeah, she's very stingy. 

ซื้อน้ำให้ฉันเลย ใช่ เธอขี้เหนียวมาก

Okay. So we just saw some examples of stingy. 

ตกลง. เราก็เลยเห็นตัวอย่างความตระหนี่บ้าง

I hope you are not stingy. It's a very negative word to call someone. 

ฉันหวังว่าคุณจะไม่ขี้เหนียว การเรียกใครสักคนเป็นคำเชิงลบมาก

But there is a positive word. And that's our next word. 

แต่มีคำที่เป็นบวก และนั่นคือคำต่อไปของเรา

That word is ‘frugal’. Listen to the pronunciation. 

คำนั้นคือ 'ประหยัด' ฟังการออกเสียง

‘frugal’ Okay, so a person who is frugal,  

'ประหยัด' เอาล่ะ คนประหยัด

they don't like to waste money. All right. 

ไม่ชอบเปลืองเงิน เอาล่ะ.

They like to save money or keep their  money and control their money very well. 

พวกเขาชอบประหยัดเงินหรือเก็บเงินและควบคุมเงินได้เป็นอย่างดี

So for example, someone goes to the  market to buy some items or some things. 

เช่น มีคนไปตลาดเพื่อซื้อของบางอย่าง

They’re probably going to buy the cheaper items. Okay. 

พวกเขาอาจจะซื้อสินค้าที่ถูกกว่า ตกลง.

They don't like to waste money on  brand names or expensive items. 

พวกเขาไม่ชอบที่จะเสียเงินไปกับสินค้าแบรนด์เนมหรือของราคาแพง

Okay. So people who like to spend less money  

ตกลง. ดังนั้นคนที่ชอบใช้จ่ายเงินน้อยลง

for things to save money they are frugal. All right. 

เพื่อซื้อของเพื่อประหยัดเงินจึงเป็นคนประหยัด เอาล่ะ.

So let's take a look at a few  examples to understand frugal. 

ลองมาดูตัวอย่างเล็กๆ น้อยๆ เพื่อทำความเข้าใจเรื่องการประหยัดกันดีกว่า

Okay. Let's look at the first example for frugal. 

ตกลง. ลองดูตัวอย่างแรกสำหรับการประหยัด

My father usually takes the bus to  work instead of driving. He is frugal. 

พ่อของฉันมักจะนั่งรถบัสไปทำงานแทนการขับรถ เขาเป็นคนประหยัด

So, yeah, the father takes  the bus instead of driving,  

ใช่แล้ว พ่อนั่งรถเมล์แทนการขับรถ

so he's probably saving money on the oil price. 

ก็น่าจะประหยัดเงินค่าน้ำมันได้

He's a very frugal guy. Let's look at the next example. 

เขาเป็นคนประหยัดมาก ลองดูตัวอย่างถัดไป

My sister always uses coupons when she  buys something at the store. She is frugal. 

น้องสาวของฉันมักจะใช้คูปองเมื่อซื้อสินค้าที่ร้าน เธอเป็นคนประหยัด

Okay. So she's always using coupons to save money. 

ตกลง. เธอจึงใช้คูปองเพื่อประหยัดเงินอยู่เสมอ

She's very frugal. Alright. 

เธอเป็นคนประหยัดมาก ใช้ได้.

So those were the examples of frugal. Okay. 

นั่นคือตัวอย่างของการประหยัด ตกลง.

So again, ‘stingy’ is negative. So if you say to someone, “Oh you  

ขอย้ำอีกครั้งว่า 'ตระหนี่' เป็นเชิงลบ ดังนั้นหากคุณพูดกับใครสักคนว่า “โอ้ คุณ

are stingy.” Okay, it's a very negative thing. That person doesn't want to share their money.

They just want to keep their money. But on the other hand, if you say to  someone,

“Oh, you are quite frugal.”  Okay, that's kind of a compliment. Meaning they are good at controlling  their money and not wasting money. 

“โอ้ คุณค่อนข้างประหยัด” โอเค นั่นเป็นคำชม หมายความว่าพวกเขาเก่งในการควบคุมเงินและไม่เสียเงิน
