Stingy and Frugal Difference, Meaning, and Pronunciation with Example English Sentences

And in this video, I'm going to talk about  two expressions that describe how people use, 

그리고 이번 영상에서는 사람들이 돈을 사용하거나 통제하는 방법을 묘사하는 두 가지 표현에 대해 이야기해보겠습니다

or control money.

One is positive. And one is negative. All right. 

하나는 긍정적이다. 그리고 하나는 부정적입니다. 괜찮은.

So these two adjectives, the first one,  we're going to talk about, is ‘stingy’. 

그래서 이 두 형용사, 우리가 이야기할 첫 번째 형용사는 '인색하다'입니다.

Okay. Now, let's focus on the pronunciation first. 

좋아요. 이제 먼저 발음에 집중해 보겠습니다.

‘stingy’ A lot of my students mistakenly say ‘stingee’. 

'인색하다' 많은 학생들이 '인색하다'라고 잘못 말합니다.

Okay. You got to be very careful. 

좋아요. 매우 조심해야 합니다.

It is pronounced ‘stingy’. And what does stingy mean? 

'짜증난다'라고 발음됩니다. 그리고 인색하다는 것은 무엇을 의미합니까?

Well, someone who is stingy -  they don't like to spend money. 

글쎄, 인색한 사람은 돈을 쓰는 것을 좋아하지 않습니다.

They don't like to share money. Okay. 

그들은 돈을 공유하는 것을 좋아하지 않습니다. 좋아요.

They are very greedy. They are not generous.

They are exactly like Scrooge. You may have, you may have heard,

Okay. So the first example for stingy.

He doesn't want to give his  son bus money. He is stingy.

Alright, so, yeah, this father doesn't  want to give his son any bus money.

Okay. That's a very stingy guy. Let's look at the next example.

I was so thirsty, but my sister  wouldn't buy me water. She's stingy. 

나는 너무 목이 말랐지만 언니는 나에게 물을 사주지 않았습니다. 그녀는 인색해요.

Okay, again, my sister very bad. I'm so thirsty, but she wouldn't  

알았어, 다시 말하지만 내 여동생은 아주 나빠. 나는 너무 목이 말랐는데 그녀는

buy me even water. Yeah, she's very stingy. 

나에게 물조차 사주지 않았습니다. 응, 그 사람은 정말 인색한 사람이야.

Okay. So we just saw some examples of stingy.

I hope you are not stingy. It's a very negative word to call someone. 

인색하지 않기를 바랍니다. 누군가에게 전화한다는 것은 매우 부정적인 단어입니다.

But there is a positive word. And that's our next word.

That word is ‘frugal’. Listen to the pronunciation.

‘frugal’ Okay, so a person who is frugal,

they don't like to waste money. All right. 

돈낭비를 싫어하는 사람이에요. 괜찮은.

They like to save money or keep their  money and control their money very well. 

그들은 돈을 저축하거나 돈을 유지하고 돈을 아주 잘 통제하는 것을 좋아합니다.

So for example, someone goes to the  market to buy some items or some things. 

예를 들어, 어떤 사람이 어떤 물건이나 물건을 사기 위해 시장에 갑니다.

They’re probably going to buy the cheaper items. Okay. 

그들은 아마도 더 싼 물건을 살 것입니다. 좋아요.

They don't like to waste money on  brand names or expensive items. 

그들은 브랜드 이름이나 값비싼 물건에 돈을 낭비하는 것을 좋아하지 않습니다.

Okay. So people who like to spend less money

for things to save money they are frugal. All right. 

검소합니다. 괜찮은.

So let's take a look at a few  examples to understand frugal. 

그럼 검소함을 이해하기 위해 몇 가지 예를 살펴보겠습니다.

Okay. Let's look at the first example for frugal. 

좋아요. 검소함의 첫 번째 예를 살펴보겠습니다.

My father usually takes the bus to  work instead of driving. He is frugal. 

우리 아버지는 보통 운전 대신 버스를 타고 출근하신다. 그는 검소합니다.

So, yeah, the father takes  the bus instead of driving,  

그럼, 네, 아버지는 운전하는 대신 버스를 타니까

so he's probably saving money on the oil price. 

아마도 유가를 절약하고 있는 것 같아요.

He's a very frugal guy. Let's look at the next example. 

그는 매우 검소한 사람입니다. 다음 예를 살펴보겠습니다.

My sister always uses coupons when she  buys something at the store. She is frugal. 

내 여동생은 가게에서 물건을 살 때 항상 쿠폰을 사용합니다. 그녀는 검소합니다.

Okay. So she's always using coupons to save money. 

좋아요. 그래서 그녀는 돈을 절약하기 위해 항상 쿠폰을 사용하고 있습니다.

She's very frugal. Alright. 

그녀는 매우 검소합니다. 괜찮은.

So those were the examples of frugal. Okay. 

이것이 검소함의 예였습니다. 좋아요.

So again, ‘stingy’ is negative. So if you say to someone, “Oh you  

그래서 다시 '인색하다'는 부정어입니다. 그래서 누군가에게 “아, 인색하구나” 라고 말한다면

are stingy.” Okay, it's a very negative thing. That person doesn't want to share their money. 

. 좋아요, 그것은 매우 부정적인 것입니다. 그 사람은 돈을 공유하고 싶지 않습니다.

They just want to keep their money. But on the other hand, if you say to  someone,

“Oh, you are quite frugal.”  Okay, that's kind of a compliment. Meaning they are good at controlling  their money and not wasting money.
