Stingy and Frugal Difference, Meaning, and Pronunciation with Example English Sentences

And in this video, I'm going to talk about  two expressions that describe how people use,

One is positive. And one is negative. All right.

So these two adjectives, the first one,  we're going to talk about, is ‘stingy’. 

সুতরাং এই দুটি বিশেষণ, প্রথমটি, আমরা কথা বলতে যাচ্ছি, হল 'কঙ্কুশ'।

Okay. Now, let's focus on the pronunciation first. 

ঠিক আছে. এখন, প্রথমে উচ্চারণে ফোকাস করা যাক।

‘stingy’ A lot of my students mistakenly say ‘stingee’. 

'কৃপণ' আমার অনেক ছাত্র ভুল করে 'স্টিংজি' বলে।

Okay. You got to be very careful. 

ঠিক আছে. আপনাকে খুব সাবধানে থাকতে হবে।

It is pronounced ‘stingy’. And what does stingy mean? 

এর উচ্চারণ হয় 'কঙ্কুশ'। এবং কৃপণ মানে কি?

Well, someone who is stingy -  they don't like to spend money. 

ঠিক আছে, যারা কৃপণ-তারা টাকা খরচ করতে পছন্দ করে না।

They don't like to share money. Okay. 

তারা টাকা ভাগাভাগি করতে পছন্দ করে না। ঠিক আছে.

They are very greedy. They are not generous. 

তারা খুব লোভী হয়। তারা উদার নয়।

They are exactly like Scrooge. You may have, you may have heard,  

তারা হুবহু স্ক্রুজের মতো। আপনি হয়তো

or know about Scrooge. He is a very stingy guy. 

স্ক্রুজ সম্পর্কে শুনেছেন বা জানেন। সে খুবই কৃপণ লোক।

He does not want to share any of his money. All right, so, to help us understand stingy  

সে তার কোনো টাকা ভাগাভাগি করতে চায় না। ঠিক আছে, তাই, কৃপণতাকে

a little bit better, let's look  at a few example sentences. 

একটু ভালোভাবে বুঝতে সাহায্য করার জন্য, আসুন কয়েকটি উদাহরণের বাক্য দেখি।

Okay. So the first example for stingy. 

ঠিক আছে. তাই কৃপণ জন্য প্রথম উদাহরণ.

He doesn't want to give his  son bus money. He is stingy. 

তিনি তার ছেলেকে বাসের টাকা দিতে চান না। সে কৃপণ।

Alright, so, yeah, this father doesn't  want to give his son any bus money. 

ঠিক আছে, হ্যাঁ, এই বাবা তার ছেলেকে কোনো বাসের টাকা দিতে চান না।

Okay. That's a very stingy guy. Let's look at the next example. 

ঠিক আছে. ওটা খুব কৃপণ লোক। এর পরবর্তী উদাহরণ তাকান.

I was so thirsty, but my sister  wouldn't buy me water. She's stingy. 

আমি খুব তৃষ্ণার্ত ছিলাম, কিন্তু আমার বোন আমাকে জল কিনতে হবে না. সে কৃপণ।

Okay, again, my sister very bad. I'm so thirsty, but she wouldn't  

ঠিক আছে, আবার, আমার বোন খুব খারাপ. আমি খুব তৃষ্ণার্ত, কিন্তু সে

buy me even water. Yeah, she's very stingy. 

আমাকে পানিও কিনবে না। হ্যাঁ, সে খুব কৃপণ।

Okay. So we just saw some examples of stingy.

I hope you are not stingy. It's a very negative word to call someone.

But there is a positive word. And that's our next word. 

তবে একটি ইতিবাচক শব্দ আছে। এবং যে আমাদের পরবর্তী শব্দ.

That word is ‘frugal’. Listen to the pronunciation. 

সেই শব্দটি হল 'মিতব্যয়ী'। উচ্চারণ শুনুন।

‘frugal’ Okay, so a person who is frugal,  

'মিতব্যয়ী' ঠিক আছে, তাই যারা মিতব্যয়ী,

they don't like to waste money. All right. 

তারা অর্থ অপচয় করতে পছন্দ করেন না। ঠিক আছে.

They like to save money or keep their  money and control their money very well. 

তারা অর্থ সঞ্চয় করতে বা তাদের অর্থ রাখতে পছন্দ করে এবং তাদের অর্থ খুব ভালভাবে নিয়ন্ত্রণ করে।

So for example, someone goes to the  market to buy some items or some things. 

তাই যেমন, কেউ বাজারে যায় কিছু জিনিস বা কিছু জিনিস কিনতে।

They’re probably going to buy the cheaper items. Okay. 

তারা সম্ভবত সস্তা আইটেম কিনতে যাচ্ছেন. ঠিক আছে.

They don't like to waste money on  brand names or expensive items. 

তারা ব্র্যান্ড নাম বা দামী জিনিসপত্রের জন্য অর্থ অপচয় করতে পছন্দ করে না।

Okay. So people who like to spend less money  

ঠিক আছে. তাই যারা

for things to save money they are frugal. All right. 

অর্থ সাশ্রয়ের জন্য জিনিসের জন্য কম অর্থ ব্যয় করতে পছন্দ করেন তারা মিতব্যয়ী। ঠিক আছে.

So let's take a look at a few  examples to understand frugal. 

তাই মিতব্যয়ী বোঝার জন্য কয়েকটি উদাহরণ দেখে নেওয়া যাক।

Okay. Let's look at the first example for frugal. 

ঠিক আছে. এর মিতব্যয়ী জন্য প্রথম উদাহরণ তাকান.

My father usually takes the bus to  work instead of driving. He is frugal. 

আমার বাবা সাধারণত ড্রাইভিং না করে বাসে করে কাজে যান। তিনি মিতব্যয়ী।

So, yeah, the father takes  the bus instead of driving,  

তাই, হ্যাঁ, বাবা ড্রাইভ করার পরিবর্তে বাস নেন,

so he's probably saving money on the oil price. 

তাই তিনি সম্ভবত তেলের দামের টাকা বাঁচাচ্ছেন।

He's a very frugal guy. Let's look at the next example. 

সে খুব মিতব্যয়ী লোক। এর পরবর্তী উদাহরণ তাকান.

My sister always uses coupons when she  buys something at the store. She is frugal. 

আমার বোন দোকানে কিছু কিনলে সবসময় কুপন ব্যবহার করে। সে মিতব্যয়ী।

Okay. So she's always using coupons to save money. 

ঠিক আছে. তাই সে সবসময় টাকা বাঁচাতে কুপন ব্যবহার করে।

She's very frugal. Alright. 

সে খুব মিতব্যয়ী। ঠিক আছে.

So those were the examples of frugal. Okay. 

সুতরাং যারা মিতব্যয়ী উদাহরণ ছিল. ঠিক আছে.

So again, ‘stingy’ is negative. So if you say to someone, “Oh you  

তাই আবার, 'কঁজ' নেতিবাচক। তাই আপনি যদি কাউকে বলেন, "ওহ তুমি

are stingy.” Okay, it's a very negative thing. That person doesn't want to share their money. 

কৃপণ।" ঠিক আছে, এটি একটি খুব নেতিবাচক জিনিস. সেই ব্যক্তি তাদের অর্থ ভাগ করতে চায় না।

They just want to keep their money. But on the other hand, if you say to  someone,

তারা শুধু তাদের টাকা রাখতে চায়। কিন্তু অন্যদিকে, আপনি যদি কাউকে বলেন,

“Oh, you are quite frugal.”  Okay, that's kind of a compliment. Meaning they are good at controlling  their money and not wasting money. 

"ওহ, আপনি বেশ মিতব্যয়ী।" ঠিক আছে, যে একটি প্রশংসা ধরনের. অর্থ তারা তাদের অর্থ নিয়ন্ত্রণ করতে এবং অর্থ অপচয় না করতে ভাল।
