Today, I am going to teach you how to remember vocabulary.

Hoje, eu vou ensinar a vocês como se lembrar do vocabulário.

One of the biggest, and most important things about learning a language, or just talking (laughs), is remembering vocabulary.

um dos maiores, e mais importante coisa sobre aprender uma língua, ou só conversar (risos), é relembrar vocabulário

You might have new vocabulary that you've never heard before or it might be vocabulary that you've heard a hundred times and you always forget.

você talvez tenha um novo vocabulário que você nunca ouviu antes ou talvez seja um vocabulário que você ouviu uma centena de vezes e você sempre se esquece

The very first rule when you're trying to learn a new language - the very basic - and a lot of people ask me: "Ronnie, how can I learn English?"

A primeira regra quando você está tentando aprender uma nova língua - o básico - e um monte de pessoas me perguntam: "Ronnie, como posso aprender Inglês?"

I'm a beginner in English, I want to learn English. The best way to begin learning English is to learn vocabulary; basic vocabulary and then go on to grammar... oh!

Eu sou um novato em Inglês, eu quero aprender Inglês. A melhor maneira de começar a aprender Inglês é aprender vocabulário; vocabulário básico e depois ir para a gramática ... oh!

Verbs would be a good way to start. I remember learning French when I was a child, I learned the colors first and then we went on to verbs and I was lost... (Chuckles) I can´t speak French.

Verbos seria uma boa maneira de começar. Lembro-me de aprender francês quando eu era uma criança, eu aprendi as cores primeiro e depois fomos para verbos e eu estava perdida... (Risos). Eu não posso falar francês.

I can teach you English, though. Today's lesson is on how to remember vocabulary. The number one rule is: Repeat, repeat and repeat.

Eu posso te ensinar Inglês, no entanto. A lição de hoje é sobre como lembrar vocabulário. A regra número um é: Repetir, repetir e repetir.

The only way that I can remember new vocabulary (because I am a visual learner, which means I must see things to remember them) I have to write new words down.

A única maneira que eu posso me lembrar do novo vocabulário,(já que eu sou um aprendiz visual, o que significa que eu devo ver as coisas para que eu me lembre delas), é anotando as palavras.

As soon as I write the new words down, for some reason, my brain remembers.

Assim que eu anotas as novas palavras, por algum motivo, meu cérebro se lembra.

Everyone has a different way of learning; maybe you are an audio learner, that means you learn from hearing.

Todo mundo tem uma maneira diferente de aprendizagem; talvez você é um aprendiz de áudio, isso significa que você aprende escutando.

If you are an audio learner you´re lucky!... Because you will be very good at languages and...because I'm more of a visual learner if someone tells me a new word

Se você é um aprendiz de áudio você é sortudo! Pois você vai ser muito bom em línguas e, se eu for mais um aprendiz visual, se alguém me diz uma palavra nova

I don't remember the new word, what I have to do, like I said, is write the word down and visualize the word.

Não me lembro da nova palavra. O que devo fazer, como eu disse, é anotar a palavra e visualizá-la.

Repeat, repeat, repeat...

Two: A really, really good technique that I used (some of you may know) I lived in Japan for four beautiful years. I actually tried to learn Japanese

...yes, yes, it was exciting and fun!

One way that I learned Kanji, (which is Chinese script) is I had a poster in my toilet of the different Chinese or Japanese characters

So everytime I went to the toilet, I would look at the poster; I am not physically consciously trying to learn it, we call it: "subconscious"; I´m subconsciously learning

the symbols because I´m seeing it everyday. Sometimes three times a day I would see that new vocabulary. It would help me to remember because I could repeat.

Eventually, I would understand it, I would get it. Another really good technique is to use a poster, as I said, (which is a big paper) and write down new vocabulary words

Or get small sticky notes. I think everyone understands sticky notes

They're about 'yay' big

And you stick them on something.

When I started to learn Spanish...

I'm still doing that..

I would take the sticky notes and I would stick them on the things that corresponded to the word.

Eu tomaria as notas e eu gostaria de colocá-los sobre as coisas que correspondiam à palavra.

For example, if I was going to learn about a chair.

Por exemplo, se eu estava indo para aprender sobre uma cadeira.

I would take a sticker that said 'silla'

Pegava num post-it que dizia 'silla'

And I would put it on the chair. I would take my sticky note and put it on the chair.

E eu colocava na cadeira.Pegava no meu post-it e colocá-lo na cadeira.

So every time I looked at the chair I would remember the Spanish word.

Assim, cada vez que olhava para a cadeira eu me lembraria a palavra espanhola.

...But I forget now. I think it's 'silla'

... Mas eu esqueço agora. Eu acho que é 'silla'

I think it's my pronunciation that's bad, isn't it? Yeah.

Eu acho que é a minha pronúncia que é ruim, não é? Sim.

So if you see the words or a group of words everyday, it will help you remember.

Então, se você vê as palavras ou um grupo de palavras todos os dias, isso vai te ajudar a lembrar.

One very important thing to also remember is that you cannot learn 100 words a day.

Uma coisa muito importante para lembrar, também, é que você não pode aprender 100 palavras por dia.

I would limit myself to no more than 10 new words a day.

Gostaria de me limitar a não mais de 10 palavras novas por dia.

That's a lot.

Isso é muito.

I would go for 3, 4, or 5.

If you're a more advanced English learner and you're trying to learn a lot of new vocabulary. I would do 10.

Se você é um mais avançado no Inglês e você está tentando aprender um monte de novo vocabulário. Eu faria 10.

But it's important to repeat, repeat, repeat.

Mas é importante repetir, repetir, repetir.

So in 1 week (10 times 7) you're going to have 70 new words in your brain.

But if you don't repeat them you will lose those words.

Because I'm a visual learner I also like to draw pictures.

I'm a very good artist.

Eu sou uma artista muito boa.

So one way I learn things is by drawing pictures, and putting the words inside the pictures.

Assim, uma maneira de eu aprender coisas é desenhando figuras e colocar as palavras no interior das imagens.

If you like arts or you're good at computer graphics you can make little pictures or posters with English words exactly into the picture.

Se você gosta de artes ou você é bom em computação gráfica você pode fazer pequenas imagens ou cartazes com palavras inglesas dentro da imagem.

So if I was going to draw a picture of a donkey, I would write the word donkey and make the shape of a donkey.

Então, se eu estava indo para tirar uma foto de um burro, eu iria escrever a palavra burro e fazer a forma de um burro.

So I remember from doing art.

Então eu me lembro de fazer arte.

The next one which is more of an academic way of learning vocabulary is to take a word that you've learned

make a sentence with the new word.

fazer uma frase com a palavra nova.

If I have the word donkey I can say "I want a donkey."

Se eu tiver a palavra burro, eu posso dizer "eu quero um burro."

So what I'm doing is I am making a sentence, so I'm improving my grammar

Então o que eu estou fazendo é que eu estou fazendo uma sentença, então eu estou melhorando minha gramática

And I'm also repeating, repeating, repeating the new vocabulary.

E eu também estou repetindo, repetindo, repetindo o novo vocabulário.

I can also say 'Hey, maybe I don't want a donkey'.

As long as you make a sentence and repeat the sentence, it's going to help you.

The last trick, which is fun, this is my favourite.

Your own native language can help you remember English vocabulary.

A very good example of this is, in Japan, there is a word called 'Bimbo'.

In Japanese it means 'broke'. It means you have no money.

Em japonês significa 'quebrou'. Isso significa que você não tem dinheiro.

When I went to Japan I heard the word 'Bimbo, Bimbo, Bimbo!' (laughs)

Why are people talking about stupid girls?

Porque as pessoas estão falando sobre garotas estúpidas?

In English, 'Bimbo' means a girl who is stupid.

Em Inglês, 'Bimbo', uma menina que é estúpida.

Or not very intelligent.

Ou não muito inteligente.

I couldn't understand why so many Japanese people were saying 'Stupid girl, stupid girl, stupid girl'

Eu não conseguia entender por que tantas pessoas japoneses estavam dizendo 'Garota estúpida, garota estúpida, garota estúpida'

And then I asked someone 'What does Bimbo mean?"

E então eu perguntei a alguém 'O que Bimbo quer dizer?"

And they said... this means no money so if you can use your own language.

E eles disseram ... isso significa sem dinheiro por isso, você pode usar seu próprio idioma.

and maybe there's even a word that sounds similar in your language like Bimbo.

e talvez não há sequer uma palavra que soa similar em seu idioma como Bimbo.

I'm trying to learn Spanish...

Eu estou tentando aprender espanhol ...

(sigh) I'm not doing a very good job at it but if I hear a word that sounds like an English word, it helps me remember the word more.

(Suspiro) eu não estou fazendo um trabalho muito bom nisso, mas se eu ouvir uma palavra que soa como uma palavra em Inglês, ele me ajuda a lembrar melhor a palavra.

I want you to try and think of your language and English. Even if the word sounds a little bit the same, your language can help you learn another language.

Eu quero que você tente e pense no seu idioma e em Inglês. Mesmo que a palavra soa um pouco o mesmo, o idioma pode ajudá-lo a aprender outro idioma.

The word might even be the same in your language, if you're lucky!

A palavra pode até ser o mesmo em seu idioma, se você tiver sorte!

Look at it every day. Visualise it. Write it down. Talk about it.
