Today, I am going to teach you how to remember vocabulary.

Hoy, yo les voy a enseñar como recordar vocabularios.

One of the biggest, and most important things about learning a language, or just talking (laughs), is remembering vocabulary.

Una de las más grande, y más importante cosas sobre aprender un lenguaje, o sólo hablar (risas), es recordar el vocabulario.

You might have new vocabulary that you've never heard before or it might be vocabulary that you've heard a hundred times and you always forget.

Puede que tengas un vocabulario nuevo que nunca hayas oído antes o que sea un vocabulario que hayas oído cien veces y que siempre olvides.

The very first rule when you're trying to learn a new language - the very basic - and a lot of people ask me: "Ronnie, how can I learn English?"

La primera regla cuando tú estás tratando de aprender un nuevo idioma - la más básica - y un montón de personas me preguntan : Ronnie, cómo puedo yo aprender Inglés?

I'm a beginner in English, I want to learn English. The best way to begin learning English is to learn vocabulary; basic vocabulary and then go on to grammar... oh!

Soy un principiante en el Inglés, yo quiero aprender Inglés. La mejor vía para comenzar a aprender Inglés es aprender vocabulario : vocabulario básico y luego vas y te adentras en la grámatica...oh!

Verbs would be a good way to start. I remember learning French when I was a child, I learned the colors first and then we went on to verbs and I was lost... (Chuckles) I can´t speak French.

Los verbos podrían ser una buena manera de comenzar. Yo recuerdo que aprendía Francés cuando yo era una niña, primero aprendí los colores y luego fuimos a los verbos y estaba perdida...( risas) no puedo hablar Francés.

I can teach you English, though. Today's lesson is on how to remember vocabulary. The number one rule is: Repeat, repeat and repeat.

Aunque te puedo enseñar Inglés. La lección de hoy es como recordar vocabulario. La regla número uno es : Repetir, repetir y repetir.

The only way that I can remember new vocabulary (because I am a visual learner, which means I must see things to remember them) I have to write new words down.

As soon as I write the new words down, for some reason, my brain remembers.

La única manera de poder recordar nuevo vocabulario (porque yo aprendo visualmente, yo debo visualizar cosas para poder recordarlas) Yo tengo que escribir nuevas palabras.

Tan pronto como yo escribo las nuevas palabras, por alguna razón, my mente las puede recordar.

Everyone has a different way of learning; maybe you are an audio learner, that means you learn from hearing.

If you are an audio learner you´re lucky!... Because you will be very good at languages and...because I'm more of a visual learner if someone tells me a new word

Si eres uno que aprendes escuchando tu tienes suerte, porque tu serás muy bueno aprendiendo lenguajes y porque yo aprendo mas visualmente si alguien me dice una nueva palabra

I don't remember the new word, what I have to do, like I said, is write the word down and visualize the word.

Yo no recuerdo la nueva palabra, que puedo yo hacer, como ya lo dije, es anotar la palabra y visualizarla.

Repeat, repeat, repeat...

repetir, repetir, repetir...

Two: A really, really good technique that I used (some of you may know) I lived in Japan for four beautiful years. I actually tried to learn Japanese

Dos: una real y buena técnica que yo uso (algunos de ustedes quizás no) Yo vivi en Japón por cuatro hermosos años. Actualmente trato de aprender Japones.

...yes, yes, it was exciting and fun!

... sí, sí, ¡fue emocionante y divertido!

One way that I learned Kanji, (which is Chinese script) is I had a poster in my toilet of the different Chinese or Japanese characters

Una forma en que aprendí kanji (que es escritura china) es que tenía un póster en mi inodoro con los diferentes caracteres chinos o japoneses.

So everytime I went to the toilet, I would look at the poster; I am not physically consciously trying to learn it, we call it: "subconscious"; I´m subconsciously learning

Entonces, cada vez que iba al baño, miraba el póster; No estoy tratando físicamente de aprenderlo, lo llamamos: "subconsciente"; Estoy aprendiendo inconscientemente

the symbols because I´m seeing it everyday. Sometimes three times a day I would see that new vocabulary. It would help me to remember because I could repeat.

Eventually, I would understand it, I would get it. Another really good technique is to use a poster, as I said, (which is a big paper) and write down new vocabulary words

Or get small sticky notes. I think everyone understands sticky notes

They're about 'yay' big

And you stick them on something.

When I started to learn Spanish...

I'm still doing that..

I would take the sticky notes and I would stick them on the things that corresponded to the word.

Tomaría las notas adhesivas y las pegaría en las cosas que correspondían a la palabra.

For example, if I was going to learn about a chair.

Por ejemplo, si fuera a aprender sobre una silla.

I would take a sticker that said 'silla'

Tomaría una pegatina que decía 'silla'

And I would put it on the chair. I would take my sticky note and put it on the chair.

Y lo pondría en la silla. Tomaría mi nota adhesiva y la pondría en la silla.

So every time I looked at the chair I would remember the Spanish word.

Así que cada vez que miraba la silla

...But I forget now. I think it's 'silla'

... Pero lo olvido ahora. Creo que es 'silla'

I think it's my pronunciation that's bad, isn't it? Yeah.

Creo que mi pronunciación es mala, ¿no? Si.

So if you see the words or a group of words everyday, it will help you remember.

One very important thing to also remember is that you cannot learn 100 words a day.

Una cosa muy importante para recordar también es que no puedes aprender 100 palabras al día.

I would limit myself to no more than 10 new words a day.

Me limitaría a no más de 10 palabras nuevas al día.

That's a lot.

Eso es mucho.

I would go for 3, 4, or 5.

Yo iría por 3, 4 o 5.

If you're a more advanced English learner and you're trying to learn a lot of new vocabulary. I would do 10.

Si eres un aprendiz de inglés más avanzado y estás tratando de aprender mucho vocabulario nuevo. Yo haría 10.

But it's important to repeat, repeat, repeat.

Pero es importante repetir, repetir, repetir.

So in 1 week (10 times 7) you're going to have 70 new words in your brain.

But if you don't repeat them you will lose those words.

Because I'm a visual learner I also like to draw pictures.

Como soy un aprendiz visual, también me gusta dibujar.

I'm a very good artist.

Soy una muy buena artista.

So one way I learn things is by drawing pictures, and putting the words inside the pictures.

Entonces, si iba a hacer un dibujo de un burro, escribiría la palabra burro y haría la forma de un burro.

If you like arts or you're good at computer graphics you can make little pictures or posters with English words exactly into the picture.

Si te gustan las artes o eres bueno en gráficos por computadora, puedes hacer pequeñas imágenes o carteles con palabras en inglés exactamente en la imagen.

So if I was going to draw a picture of a donkey, I would write the word donkey and make the shape of a donkey.

Entonces, si iba a hacer un dibujo de un burro, escribiría la palabra burro y haría la forma de un burro.

So I remember from doing art.

Así que recuerdo de hacer arte.

The next one which is more of an academic way of learning vocabulary is to take a word that you've learned

La siguiente que es más una forma académica de aprender vocabulario es tomar una palabra que hayas aprendido

make a sentence with the new word.

haz una oración con la nueva palabra.

If I have the word donkey I can say "I want a donkey."

Si tengo la palabra burro puedo decir "Quiero un burro".

So what I'm doing is I am making a sentence, so I'm improving my grammar

Entonces, lo que estoy haciendo es hacer una oración, así que estoy mejorando mi gramática

And I'm also repeating, repeating, repeating the new vocabulary.

Y también estoy repitiendo, repitiendo, repitiendo el nuevo vocabulario.

I can also say 'Hey, maybe I don't want a donkey'.

También puedo decir 'Oye, tal vez no quiero un burro'.

As long as you make a sentence and repeat the sentence, it's going to help you.

Siempre y cuando hagas una oración y la repitas, te ayudará.

The last trick, which is fun, this is my favourite.

El último truco, que es divertido, este es mi favorito.

Your own native language can help you remember English vocabulary.

Tu propio idioma nativo puede ayudarte a recordar el vocabulario en inglés.

A very good example of this is, in Japan, there is a word called 'Bimbo'.

Un muy buen ejemplo de esto es, en Japón, hay una palabra llamada 'Bimbo'.

In Japanese it means 'broke'. It means you have no money.

En japonés significa 'roto'. Significa que no tienes dinero.

When I went to Japan I heard the word 'Bimbo, Bimbo, Bimbo!' (laughs)

Cuando fui a Japón escuché la palabra '¡Bimbo, Bimbo, Bimbo!' (risas)

Why are people talking about stupid girls?

¿Por qué la gente habla de chicas estúpidas?

In English, 'Bimbo' means a girl who is stupid.

En inglés, 'Bimbo' significa una chica que es estúpida.

Or not very intelligent.

O no muy inteligente.

I couldn't understand why so many Japanese people were saying 'Stupid girl, stupid girl, stupid girl'

No podía entender por qué tantos japoneses decían 'niña estúpida, niña estúpida, niña estúpida'

And then I asked someone 'What does Bimbo mean?"

Y luego le pregunté a alguien "¿Qué quiere decir Bimbo?"

And they said... this means no money so if you can use your own language.

Y dijeron ... esto significa que no hay dinero, así que si puedes usar tu propio idioma.

and maybe there's even a word that sounds similar in your language like Bimbo.

incluso hay una palabra que suena similar en tu idioma como Bimbo.

I'm trying to learn Spanish...

Estoy tratando de aprender español...

(sigh) I'm not doing a very good job at it but if I hear a word that sounds like an English word, it helps me remember the word more.

(suspiro) No estoy haciendo un buen trabajo, pero si escucho una palabra que suena como una palabra en inglés, me ayuda a recordarla más.

I want you to try and think of your language and English. Even if the word sounds a little bit the same, your language can help you learn another language.

Quiero que intentes y pienses en tu idioma e inglés. Incluso si la palabra suena un poco igual, su idioma puede ayudarlo a aprender otro idioma.

The word might even be the same in your language, if you're lucky!

¡La palabra incluso podría ser la misma en tu idioma, si tienes suerte!

If you need help in remembering vocabulary, number one rule..

Repeat, repeat, repeat.

Repetir, repetir, repetir.

Look at it every day. Visualise it. Write it down. Talk about it.

Míralo todos los días. Visualízalo. Escríbelo. Hable al respecto.

It'll help you. It'll stick in your brain.
