How to Remember Vocabulary

Today, I am going to teach you how to remember vocabulary.

Hoje, eu vou ensinar a você como lembrar do vocabulário.

One of the biggest, and most important things about learning a language, or just talking (laughs), is remembering vocabulary.

Uma das maiores e mais importantes coisas sobre aprender um idioma, ou simplesmente conversar, é lembrar do vocabulário.

You might have new vocabulary that you've never heard before or it might be vocabulary that you've heard a hundred times and you always forget.

Você poderia ter um vocabulário novo, que você nunca ouviu antes, ou poderia ser um vocabulário que você ouviu centenas de vezes e sempre esquece.

The very first rule when you're trying to learn a new language - the very basic - and a lot of people ask me: "Ronnie, how can I learn English?"

A primeiríssima regra quando você está tentando aprender um novo idioma, o mais básico, e um monte de pessoas me pergunta: "Ronnie, como eu posso aprender Inglês?"

I'm a beginner in English, I want to learn English. The best way to begin learning English is to learn vocabulary; basic vocabulary and then go on to grammar... oh!

Eu sou um principiante no Inglês, eu quero aprender Inglês. A melhor maneira de aprender Inglês, é aprender o vocabulário, vocabulário básico e então ir para a gramática...oh"

Verbs would be a good way to start. I remember learning French when I was a child, I learned the colors first and then we went on to verbs and I was lost... (Chuckles) I can´t speak French.

Verbos seria uma boa maneira de começar. Eu me lembro, aprendendo Francês, quando eu era uma criança, eu aprendi as cores primeiro e então nós fomos para os verbos e eu fiquei perdida...Eu não consigo falar Francês.

I can teach you English, though. Today's lesson is on how to remember vocabulary. The number one rule is: Repeat, repeat and repeat.

Eu posso te ensinar Inglês, porém. A lição de hoje, é sobre como lembrar o vocabulário. A primeira regra é: Repita, repita e repita.

The only way that I can remember new vocabulary (because I am a visual learner, which means I must see things to remember them) I have to write new words down.

O único jeito que eu posso lembrar um novo vocabulário, (porquê eu sou um aprendiz visual, o qual significa que eu devo ver as coisas para lembrar delas) Eu tenho que anotar as novas palavras.

As soon as I write the new words down, for some reason, my brain remembers.

Tão logo eu anote as novas palavras, por alguma razão. meu cérebro se lembra.

Everyone has a different way of learning; maybe you are an audio learner, that means you learn from hearing.

Cada um tem um jeito diferente de aprender. Talvez você seja um aprendiz de áudio, que significa que você aprende de ouvir.

If you are an audio learner you´re lucky!... Because you will be very good at languages and...because I'm more of a visual learner if someone tells me a new word

Se você é um aprendiz de ouvir, você é um sortudo! Porque você será muito bom em idiomas e...porque eu sou uma aprendiz visual se alguém me diz uma nova palavra.

I don't remember the new word, what I have to do, like I said, is write the word down and visualize the word.

Eu não me lembro da nova palavra, o que eu tenho que fazer, como eu disse, é anotar a palavra e visualiza-la.

Repeat, repeat, repeat...

Repita, repita, repita...

Two: A really, really good technique that I used (some of you may know) I lived in Japan for four beautiful years. I actually tried to learn Japanese

...yes, yes, it was exciting and fun!

One way that I learned Kanji, (which is Chinese script) is I had a poster in my toilet of the different Chinese or Japanese characters

Uma maneira que eu aprendi Kanji, ( o qual é uma escrita Chinesa) é, eu tinha um cartaz em meu banheiro, com diferentes csímbolos do Chinês e Japonês

So everytime I went to the toilet, I would look at the poster; I am not physically consciously trying to learn it, we call it: "subconscious"; I´m subconsciously learning

Então, toda vez que eu ia ao banheiro, eu iria olhar para o cartaz; Eu não estou fisicamente conscientemente tentando aprender, nós o chamamos: "subconsciente"; Estou subconscientemente aprendendo

the symbols because I´m seeing it everyday. Sometimes three times a day I would see that new vocabulary. It would help me to remember because I could repeat.

os símbolos, porque eu estou vendo isso todos os dias. Algumas vezes, três vezes ao dia, eu veria aquele novo vocabulário. Isso me ajudaria a lembrar, porque eu podia repetir.

Eventually, I would understand it, I would get it. Another really good technique is to use a poster, as I said, (which is a big paper) and write down new vocabulary words

Eventualmente, eu iria entende-lo, eu iria capta-lo. Outra técnica muito boa é usar um cartaz, como eu disse, (que é um grande papel) e escrever novas palavras do vocabulário

Or get small sticky notes. I think everyone understands sticky notes

They're about 'yay' big

Eles são tipo esse tamanho.

And you stick them on something.

E você os cola sobre alguma coisa.

When I started to learn Spanish...

Quando eu comecei a aprender Espanhol...

I'm still doing that..

I would take the sticky notes and I would stick them on the things that corresponded to the word.

Eu pegava os lembretes e eu os colocava nas coisas que correspondiam à palavra.

For example, if I was going to learn about a chair.

Por exemplo, se eu fosse aprender sobre cadeira

I would take a sticker that said 'silla'

Eu pegaria um lembrete que dissesse "silla"

And I would put it on the chair. I would take my sticky note and put it on the chair.

E colocaria sobre a cadeira. Eu levaria meu adesivo e colocaria sobre a cadeira.

So every time I looked at the chair I would remember the Spanish word.

Então, toda vez que eu olhasse para a cadeira, eu iria lembrar da palavra em Espanhol.

...But I forget now. I think it's 'silla'

...Mas eu esqueci agora. Eu acho que é "silla''

I think it's my pronunciation that's bad, isn't it? Yeah.

Eu acho que é minha pronúncia que é ruim, não é? É.

So if you see the words or a group of words everyday, it will help you remember.

Então, se você ver as palavras ou um grupo de palavras todos os dias, isso irá ajuda-lo a se lembrar.

One very important thing to also remember is that you cannot learn 100 words a day.

Uma coisa muito importante para se lembrar também, é que você não pode aprender 100 palavras por dia.

I would limit myself to no more than 10 new words a day.

Eu me limitaria a não mais de 10 novas palavras por dia,

That's a lot.

Isto é bastante.

I would go for 3, 4, or 5.

Eu iria por 3, 4, ou 5.

If you're a more advanced English learner and you're trying to learn a lot of new vocabulary. I would do 10.

Se você é um aprendiz avançado em Inglês, e você está tentando aprender muito do vocabulário, eu iria fazer 10.

But it's important to repeat, repeat, repeat.

Mas é importante repetir, repetir, repetir.

So in 1 week (10 times 7) you're going to have 70 new words in your brain.

Então em uma semana (10 vezes 7) voc~e vai ter 70 novas palavras no seu cérebro.

But if you don't repeat them you will lose those words.

Mas se você não repeti-las, você irá perder aquelas palavras.

Because I'm a visual learner I also like to draw pictures.

Porque eu sou um aprendiz visual, eu também gosto de desenhar figuras.

I'm a very good artist.

Eu sou muito boa artista.

So one way I learn things is by drawing pictures, and putting the words inside the pictures.

Então, de alguma forma eu aprendo as coisas desenhando figuras e colocando as palavras dentro das figuras.

If you like arts or you're good at computer graphics you can make little pictures or posters with English words exactly into the picture.

Se você gosta de artes, ou você é bom em gráficos de computador, você pode fazer pequenas figuras ou cartazes com palavras em Inglês, e colocar exatamente dentro da figura.

So if I was going to draw a picture of a donkey, I would write the word donkey and make the shape of a donkey.

Então, se você fosse desenhar uma figura de um asno, eu escreveria a palavra "donkey'' e faria a forma de um asno.

So I remember from doing art.

Então eu me lembro de fazer arte.

The next one which is more of an academic way of learning vocabulary is to take a word that you've learned

A próxima coisa, o qual é mais de um jeito acadêmico de aprender vocabulário, é pegar a palavra que você aprendeu

make a sentence with the new word.

fazer uma frase com a nova palavra.

If I have the word donkey I can say "I want a donkey."

Se eu tenho a palavra ''donkey'', eu posso dizer 'Eu quero um asno."

So what I'm doing is I am making a sentence, so I'm improving my grammar

Então o que eu estou fazendo é, eu estou fazendo uma frase, então eu estou melhorando a minha gramática

And I'm also repeating, repeating, repeating the new vocabulary.

E eu também estou repetindo, repetindo, repetindo o novo vocabulário.

I can also say 'Hey, maybe I don't want a donkey'.

Eu posso também dizer "Hey, talvez eu não queira um asno."

As long as you make a sentence and repeat the sentence, it's going to help you.

O quanto você faça a frase e a repita, isto vai te ajudar.

The last trick, which is fun, this is my favourite.

O último truque, o qual é divertido, este é o meu favorito.

Your own native language can help you remember English vocabulary.

Seu próprio idioma nativo pode ajuda-lo a se lembrar do vocabulário Inglês.

A very good example of this is, in Japan, there is a word called 'Bimbo'.

Um muito bom exemplo disso é, no Japão, há uma palavra chamada "Bimbo"

In Japanese it means 'broke'. It means you have no money.

Em japonês isso significa "quebrar'. Isso significa que você não tem dinheiro.

When I went to Japan I heard the word 'Bimbo, Bimbo, Bimbo!' (laughs)

Quando eu fui para o Japão, eu ouvi a palavra "Bimbo, Bimbo, Bimbo!'

Why are people talking about stupid girls?

Por quê as pessoas estão falando sobre garotas estúpidas? (idiotas)

In English, 'Bimbo' means a girl who is stupid.

Em Inglês, "Bimbo' significa uma garota que é estúpida.

Or not very intelligent.

Ou não muito inteligente.

I couldn't understand why so many Japanese people were saying 'Stupid girl, stupid girl, stupid girl'

Eu não consigo entender porquê tantas pessoas japonesas estavam dizendo ''garota estúpida, garota estúpida, garota estúpida''

And then I asked someone 'What does Bimbo mean?"

E então eu perguntei a alguém "O quê significa ''Bimbo''?

And they said... this means no money so if you can use your own language.

E eles disseram...isto significa sem dinheiro, ... então se você puder usar seu próprio idioma

and maybe there's even a word that sounds similar in your language like Bimbo.

e talvez exista até mesmo uma palavra que pareça similar em seu idioma, como "Bimbo''

I'm trying to learn Spanish...

Eu estou tentando aprender Espanhol...

(sigh) I'm not doing a very good job at it but if I hear a word that sounds like an English word, it helps me remember the word more.

Eu não estou fazendo um bom trabalho com isso, mas se eu ouvir uma palavra que pareça uma palavra inglesa, isso me ajuda a lembrar mais da palavra.

I want you to try and think of your language and English. Even if the word sounds a little bit the same, your language can help you learn another language.

Eu quero que você tente e pense no seu idioma e em Inglês. Mesmo se a palavra parecer um pouquinho a mesma, seu idioma pode ajuda-lo a aprender outro idioma.

The word might even be the same in your language, if you're lucky!

A palavra poderia até mesmo ser a mesma em seu idioma, se você tiver sorte!

Repeat, repeat, repeat.

Look at it every day. Visualise it. Write it down. Talk about it.

It'll help you. It'll stick in your brain.
