English Conditional Sentences (with examples!)

Sometimes it feels like English grammar can be pretty

structures in English that follow really clear rules

the way that you express your thoughts and your ideas

We use conditional sentences to explain what actually

happens, what could happen

We talk about what we wish would happen

our present situation. And what might have happened

Now there are four types of conditional sentences.

They're all really similar

but they're not the same.

If I get sick, I go to the doctor.

If I get sick, I will go to the doctor.

If I got sick, I would go to the doctor.

If I had been sick, I would have gone to the doctor.

මම අසනීප වී සිටියා නම් මම වෛද්‍යවරයා වෙත යන්නෙමි.

So let's talk about what is the same or what's similar

ඒ නිසා අපි සමාන හෝ සමාන දේ ගැන කතා කරමු

about all of these sentences. They all use two clauses.

මේ සියලු වාක්‍ය ගැන. ඔවුන් සියල්ලම වගන්ති දෙකක් භාවිතා කරයි.

There are two parts to each sentence

සෑම වාක්‍යයකම කොටස් දෙකක් තිබේ

separated by a comma

කොමාවෙන් වෙන් කරනු ලැබේ

and they all use the conjunction 'if'.

ඔවුන් සියල්ලම 'if' සංයෝජනය භාවිතා කරයි.

Just a little reminder that we use conjunctions

අපි සංයෝජන භාවිතා කරන බව කුඩා මතක් කිරීමක්

in English to join two ideas together in one sentence.

I ate an apple and two desserts.

I like it but I don't want it.

I'll do it if you drive me to the cinema later.

So all of these words are really, really tiny

grammatical words but they have an important function.

They're connecting two ideas together

and conditional sentences

all use 'if' to join two ideas together.

In all conditional sentences we have an 'if' clause

සියලුම කොන්දේසි සහිත වාක්‍යවල අපට 'if' වගන්තියක් ඇත

and a result clause.

So the 'if' clause is the event or the situation

එබැවින් 'if' වගන්තිය සිදුවීම හෝ තත්වයයි

that must happen in order for the other thing to happen.

So the result can only happen if the 'if' clause occurs

and that is why it's called a conditional sentence.

A condition is something that you have to do

or a situation that needs to exist

in order for something else to happen.

You can't get this without squeezing this.

There is a really important relationship

between these two things.

One relies on the other.

Now these sentences, they're all quite similar

but there are some really clear differences as well.

I mean, check out the verbs.

This is where the main difference between

these conditional sentences are.

It's all in the verbs, you can see it, right?

And the meaning is different too.

We use each type of sentence in a different situation.

අපි එක් එක් වර්ගයේ වාක්‍ය වෙනස් තත්වයක භාවිතා කරමු.

If you haven't already noticed, we have the zero

ඔබ දැනටමත් දැක නොමැති නම්, අපට ශුන්‍යය ඇත

conditional, the first conditional,

කොන්දේසි සහිත, පළමු කොන්දේසිය,

the second conditional, the third conditional.

දෙවන කොන්දේසිය, තෙවන කොන්දේසිය.

And I'm going to go through each type of

ඒ වගේම මම එක් එක් වර්ගයට යන්නම්

conditional sentence now one by one.

කොන්දේසි සහිත වාක්‍ය දැන් එකින් එක.

So let's get started with the zero conditional

එබැවින් ශුන්‍ය කොන්දේසි සහිතව ආරම්භ කරමු

and I recommend that you take some notes

ඔබ සටහන් කිහිපයක් ගන්නා ලෙස මම නිර්දේශ කරමි

as we go through all of these examples.

The zero conditional is called the factual conditional.

ශුන්‍ය කොන්දේසිය තථ්‍ය කොන්දේසි ලෙස හැඳින්වේ.

If I get sick, I go to the doctor.

මට අසනීප වුණොත් මම වෛද්‍යවරයා ළඟට යනවා.

And it's one of the easiest to remember because both

ඒ දෙකම මතක තබා ගැනීමට පහසුම එකකි

clauses are in the present simple tense.

වගන්ති වර්තමාන සරල ආතතියේ පවතී.

We have the 'if' clause with the present simple and then

වර්තමාන සරල හා පසුව අපට 'if' වගන්තිය ඇත

the present simple in the main result clause as well.

ප්‍රධාන ප්‍රති result ල වගන්තියේ වර්තමාන සරල ය.

So if this happens, then this is what happens.

ඉතින් මෙය සිදුවුවහොත් සිදුවන්නේ එයයි.

We use the zero conditional to talk about habits,

පුරුදු ගැන කතා කිරීමට අපි ශුන්‍ය කොන්දේසි භාවිතා කරමු,

facts and truths.

කරුණු සහ සත්‍යයන්.

You can't argue about these things, right?

ඔයාට මේ දේවල් ගැන වාද කරන්න බැහැ නේද?

With these things, we're not talking about possibility.

මේ දේවල් සමඟ, අපි කතා කරන්නේ හැකියාව ගැන නොවේ.

It's fact.

If you put ice in your drink, it melts.

See? It's really simple.

Remember, present simple, present simple.

මතක තබා ගන්න, ඉදිරිපත් කරන්න සරල, වර්තමාන සරල.

Then we have the first conditional

එවිට අපට පළමු කොන්දේසිය තිබේ

which we used to talk about possible and likely

අපි කතා කළ හැකි හා විය හැකි දේ ගැන

future outcomes.

අනාගත ප්‍රති come ල.

If I get sick, I will go to the doctor.

මට අසනීප වුවහොත් මම වෛද්‍යවරයා වෙත යන්නෙමි.

So it's possible that in the future I'll get sick

ඉතින් අනාගතයේදී මට අසනීප වෙන්න පුළුවන්

and if that occurs, I will probably go to the doctor.

එය සිදුවුවහොත්, මම බොහෝ විට වෛද්‍යවරයා වෙත යන්නෙමි.

So we use 'if' with the present simple

and 'will' with our verb infinitive.

If it's hot tomorrow, I'll go for a swim at the beach.

Now am I sure that it will be hot tomorrow?

No but it is summertime here in Australia.

And if it is hot,

Now we have the second conditional and we use it

This is a hypothetical situation, right?

It's not real. Do I look sick? I'm not sick.

I'm imagining that the present situation

Now if that were true, I would go to the doctor.

Because I'm not actually sick. It's an unreal situation.

But to express this in English, we use 'if'

Don't forget that in English, all verbs that follow

ඉංග්‍රීසියෙන්, පසුව එන සියලුම ක්‍රියා පද අමතක නොවන බව අමතක නොකරන්න

modal verbs are in the infinitive form.

මෝඩල් ක්‍රියාපද අනන්ත ස්වරූපයෙන් පවතී.

If I had more money, I would buy a boat.

මට වැඩිපුර මුදල් ඇත්නම් මම බෝට්ටුවක් මිලදී ගන්නෙමි.

Now it's really common and natural to use contractions

සංකෝචන භාවිතා කිරීම දැන් සාමාන්‍ය හා ස්වාභාවිකය

in conditional sentences. I would definitely say

කොන්දේසි සහිත වාක්‍ය වලින්. මම අනිවාර්යයෙන්ම කියනවා

when I'm speaking naturally:

මම ස්වභාවිකව කතා කරන විට:

If I had more money, I'd buy a boat.

මට වැඩිපුර මුදල් ඇත්නම්, මම බෝට්ටුවක් මිලදී ගන්නෙමි.

I'd, he'd, you'd, they'd.

This pronunciation is much more common

මෙම උච්චාරණය වඩාත් පොදු වේ

in spoken English.

There are lots of different uses

for the second conditional.

We use it to give advice, to give reasons why we can't

do something and generally just imagine that

So I'm definitely gonna have to go through all of those

And the third conditional is the past unreal conditional.

If I had been sick, I would have gone to the doctor.

මම අසනීප වී සිටියා නම් මම වෛද්‍යවරයා වෙත යන්නෙමි.

We use this structure to imagine a different past,

වෙනස් ව්‍යුහයක් සිතීමට අපි මෙම ව්‍යුහය භාවිතා කරමු,

different to the one that actually happened, right?

ඇත්ත වශයෙන්ම සිදුවූ දෙයට වඩා වෙනස්, හරිද?

We use 'if' with the past perfect

අතීතය පරිපූර්ණ ලෙස අපි 'if' භාවිතා කරමු

and 'would have' with the past participle.

සහ අතීත සහභාගීත්වය සමඟ 'තිබිය යුතුය'.

Just to be clear, the 'if' clause did not actually happen

පැහැදිලිව කිවහොත්, 'if' වගන්තිය ඇත්ත වශයෙන්ම සිදු නොවීය

but I'm imagining the result if the past was different.

නමුත් මම සිතන්නේ ප්‍රති the ලය අතීතය වෙනස් නම්.

So in this situation, was I really sick?

I'm not talking about what actually happened,

I'm talking about what could have happened in the past

Can you think of a time when this grammar structure

When you regret something in the past, something that

that result was different.
