because some English verbs are quite similar

and sometimes it's hard to know which one

In this lesson, I'll be talking about the verbs

'to lend' and 'to borrow'.

"To Lend" e "To Borrow".

And they're confusing because the meanings

happen to be very similar

but different.

Just like the difference between been and gone,

the main difference between 'to lend' and 'to borrow'

a principal diferença entre "To Lend" e "To Borrow"

is the direction of the action.

Okay, so what do these verbs actually mean?

Ok, então o que esses verbos significam na verdade?

'To lend' means to give something to someone

"To Lend" significa dar algo para alguém

for a short period of time

por um curto período de tempo

and you expect to get it back again.

e você espera ter isso de volta. (Em português seria "Emprestar")

I'll lend you some money when I get paid.

"Vou te emprestar uma grana quando eu for pago."

He lent his car to a friend for the weekend.

"Ele emprestou o carro dele para um amigo para o fim de semana."

It's important to note that with this verb,

É importante notar que com esse verbo

there is a difference

há uma diferença

between British and American English.

entre o Britânico e o Inglês Americano.

Lend is used in British English

"Lend" é usado no Inglês Britânico

and instead, loan is used in American English.

e ao invés disso, "Loan" é usado no Inglês Americano.

Now, lend is an irregular verb

Agora, "Lend" é um verbo irregular,

so the past tense form becomes lent.

então a forma no passado se torna "Lent".

Loan is a regular verb so it becomes

"Loan" é um verbo regular, então se torna

loaned in the past tense.

"Loaned" no passado.

Can you lend me some money?

"Pode me emprestar uma grana?" (Inglês Britânico)

Can you loan me some money?

"Pode me emprestar uma grana?" (Inglês Americano)

Both of these sentences are the same.

Ambas as frases são a mesma.

Okay, so lend means to give something to someone

Ok, então "Lend" significa dar algo para alguém

for a short period of time

por um curto período de tempo

and you can expect it back again.

e você pode esperar ter isso de volta.

Now, when we use borrow, we simply need to switch

Agora, quando usamos o "Borrow", nós simplesmente precisamos trocar

the action to the person who is receiving the item.

'To borrow' means to get something from someone

"To borrow" significa obter algo de alguém

with the intention of giving it back.

You don't plan to keep it

Você não planeja manter isso

and the person who gave it to you

expects to receive it back again.

Now, borrow is a regular past tense verb

Agora, "Borrow" é um verbo regular no passado

so we just need to add -ed to make it borrowed

então, nós apenas precisamos adicionar o -ed para fazer "Borrowed"

in the past tense.

no passado.

Right, so let me show you.

Certo, deixa eu te mostrar.

Lend is similar to give.

"Lend" é similar a "Dar"

And borrow is similar to take or receive.

e "Borrow" é similar a "pegar" ou "receber".

But both of these verbs mean

that the action only happens for a short period of time.

Let's take a closer look.

Can you lend me your car for the weekend?

"Você pode me emprestar o seu carro para o fim de semana?"

Can I borrow your car for the weekend?

"Posso te pedir emprestado o seu carro para o fim de semana?"

These two sentences are describing

Estas duas frases estão descrevendo

exactly the same situation

exatamente a mesma situação

but from a different perspective.

mas de diferentes perspectivas.

The subject, so the person who is doing the action,

O sujeito, que é a pessoa que está fazendo a ação,

is different in each sentence

é diferente em cada sentença

so the verb must be different too.

então, o verbo deve ser diferente também.

You can't say "Can I lend me your car for the weekend?"

Você não pode dizer "Can I lend me your car for the weekend?"

Because the car is not mine

Porque o carro não é meu

so I can't lend the car to me

então eu não posso emprestar o carro para mim

or to anyone else for that matter.

ou a mais alguém por esse motivo.

You can only lend something if it belongs to you.

Você pode apenas emprestar algo se isso pertence a você.

You also can't say, "Can you borrow me your car?"

Você também não pode dizer "Can you borrow me your car?".

And this is a really common mistake.

E isso é realmente um erro comum.

The person who owns the car cannot borrow it.

A pessoa que possui o carro não pode emprestar.

Getting the information about who's giving and who's

Obtendo a informação sobre quem tá dando e quem tá

taking something is really important

pegando algo é realmente importante

when you're using these verbs.

quando você tá usando esses verbos.

So, let's make sure you're getting that part right.

So we have the subject and lend.

Temos o Sujeito e o "Lend".

Now remember, the subject is the person

who is doing the action,

so the person who is lending

or who owns the object.

ou quem obtém o objeto.

We have subject with lend with our object pronoun

and our object.

So the object pronoun tells us

who is receiving the action.

Can you lend me some money?

"Pode me emprestar um pouco de dinheiro?"

Now, lend can also be directly followed by the object

Agora, "Lend" pode também ser diretamente seguido pelo objeto

but if you want to say who's receiving the action,

mas se você quer dizer quem está recebendo a ação,

you need to use the preposition, to.

você precisa usar a preposição "To". ("Para" no sentido de direção; movimento.)

So subject, lend, object,

to someone.

Can you lend some money to me?

Now, when using borrow

Agora, quando usar "Borrow"

you can't use an object pronoun after the verb.

You can't say "Can you borrow me your car?"

Você não pode dizer "Can you borrow me your car?".

But you can use subject with borrow and the object.

Mas você pode usar o sujeito com borrow e o objeto.

Can I borrow a pen?

"Can I borrow a pen?"

And then you can add the preposition, from,

and the person.

e a pessoa.

Can I borrow a pen from you?

"Posso te pedir emprestado uma caneta?"

Can you lend a pen to Paul?

"Você pode emprestar uma caneta para Paul?"

Okay are you ready to practise with me?

Practise using lend and borrow.

When I .... you my hairdryer, you said you'd give it back!

When I lent you my hair dryer,

Now, there's an object pronoun here,

Agora, há um pronome do objeto aqui,

so it can't be borrow, can it?

então não pode ser Borrow, pode?

And also take note of the tense

E também tome nota do tempo

used in the second clause.

The past simple. So your verb needs to reflect this.

O passado simples. Então o seu verbo precisa refletir isso.

They said we could ... their lawnmower.

Which one is it?

Qual é esse?

They said we could borrow their lawnmower.

Eles disseram que poderíamos pedir emprestado o cortador de grama deles.

Their lawnmower is not ours so it must be borrow.

O cortador de grama não é nosso, então deve ser Borrow.

He'll ... him the money if he really needs it.

He'll lend him the money if he really needs it.

So there's an object pronoun here so it can't be borrow.

She asked me if she could ... $500.

She asked me if she could borrow $500.

Now the clue here is in the verb asked.

The person who is lending the item is not asking for it

are they?

So it must be borrow.
