In today's lesson, we're going to keep talking about

connected speech

and that is linking sounds together

when you speak English,

Connected speech is spoken language, that is

continuous.

The English spoken by native speakers in

အင်္ဂလိပ်ဘာသာစကား

normal conversations.

We speak quickly without pausing between words.

And there is often a huge difference between

the way that words are pronounced in isolation,

on their own,

When words come together in a sentence,

they often affect each other.

Words push together, some sounds disappear

or they change completely.

So listen again without connected speech.

It's really choppy,

ဒါဟာတကယ့်လှိုင်းထနေသော

not like a native speaker would say it at all.

That's much better.

Using connected speech, you'll sound more natural

and relaxed.

And by learning and understanding how to use

You see, connected speech and linking sounds

are exactly what allows native English speakers

to talk so fast.

Spoken English is not always this clear.

Most English speakers just don't speak as clearly

In fact, I don't always speak this clearly either.

And I know it's difficult for you when you're listening

to hear where one word ends

This is part of connected speech.

The good news is the way that sounds change in

spoken English is not completely random.

There are a few common rules and regular situations

so it's possible to study it, to learn it.

The trick to remember with linking is that we are

ချိတ်ဆက်မှုနှင့်အတူသတိရဖို့လှည့်ကွက်ငါတို့ဖြစ်ကြသည်

talking about sounds, not letters.

So don't let your eyes trick you,

we're talking about sounds linking together.

Speaking naturally in English is really only

And that's exactly what we're going to do today!

Like I said, last week we focused on

That's consonant to vowel linking.

၎င်းသည်သရသံချိတ်ဆက်မှုနှင့်ကိုက်ညီသည်။

Today, we are going to concentrate on

ဒီနေ့ငါတို့အာရုံစိုက်တော့မယ်

consonant to consonant linking.

ဗျည်းချိတ်ဆက်ဖို့ဗျည်း။

So here we have

ဒီမှာရှိတယ်

a word that ends in the consonant sound /l/

ဗျည်းသံနှင့်အဆုံးသတ်သောစကားလုံး / l /

And the word following also starts

အောက်ပါစကားလုံးသည်လည်းစတင်သည်

in the same consonant sound.

တူညီတဲ့ဗျည်းအသံ။

So it makes sense to pull together these sounds, right?

ဒီအသံတွေကိုအတူတကွစုစည်းထားတာကသဘာဝကျတယ်မဟုတ်လား။

So that they become one.

It's much easier.

There's no pause there at all. No break in the sound,

it's just one continuous sound.

And as much as possible, we want your spoken English

to flow like this, for more sounds to be connected

rather than adding awkward

မဟုတ်ဘဲအဆင်မပြေထည့်သွင်းခြင်းထက်

pauses through your sentence.

Now this all seems pretty straightforward, right?

အခုဒီအရာအားလုံးတော်တော်လေးရှင်းနေပြီလား။

Consonant followed by the same consonant.

ဗျည်းသည်တူညီသောဗျည်းဖြင့်လိုက်သည်။

You can push them together and make the sound

သူတို့ကိုသင်အတူတကွတွန်း။ အသံဖြစ်စေနိုင်သည်

flow quickly without pausing between those two sounds

အဲဒီအသံနှစ်ခုကြားမှာခဏရပ်နားစရာမလိုဘဲမြန်မြန်ဆန်ဆန်စီးဆင်းပါ

Now there are some consonants that can link

ယခုချိတ်ဆက်နိုင်သောဗျည်းအက္ခရာအချို့ရှိနေပြီ

to different consonants which is a little unusual

အနည်းငယ်ပုံမှန်မဟုတ်သောဖြစ်သောကွဲပြားခြားနားသောဗျည်းမှရန်

but when that happens, the sound changes.

ဒါပေမဲ့အဲဒီလိုဖြစ်လာတဲ့အခါအသံပြောင်းသွားတယ်။

It creates a different consonant sound.

၎င်းသည်ကွဲပြားသောဗျည်းသံကိုဖန်တီးပေးသည်။

So let's look at an example.

ဥပမာတစ်ခုကြည့်ရအောင်။

Now let's speed that up a bit to regular pace.

ဒါကိုပုံမှန်အရှိန်မြှင့်ဖို့နည်းနည်းမြန်မြန်သွားကြစို့။

So can you hear that /ʤ/ sound in there?

ဒါကြောင့်သင်အဲဒီမှာ / ʤ / အသံကြားနိုင်သလဲ

Now if we just say 'would' by itself there's no sound.

အခုတော့ `အလိုတော် 'လို့ပြောရင်အသံမရှိတော့ဘူး။

There's also no /ʤ/ in 'you' either, right?

ဟုတ်တယ်မဟုတ်လား၊ ဟုတ်တယ်မဟုတ်လား။ ဟုတ်တယ်မဟုတ်လား။

So the D at the end of the word 'would'

ဒီတော့ D က 'would' ဆိုတဲ့စကားလုံးရဲ့အဆုံးမှာ။

can link to the /j/

/ j / ကိုချိတ်ဆက်နိုင်တယ်။

at the start of 'you'.

'မင်း' ရဲ့အစမှာ

But when we do this, it creates a new sound.

ဒါပေမဲ့ဒါကိုလုပ်တဲ့အခါမှာအသံအသစ်တစ်ခုထွက်လာတယ်။

The /ʤ/ sound.

အဆိုပါ / ʤ / အသံ။

So actually,

ဒါဆိုတကယ်တော့၊

in any situation where one word ends in a dip

တ ဦး တည်းစကားလုံးတစ် ဦး သို့ကျဆင်းလာအတွက်အဆုံးသတ်ရှိရာမည်သည့်အခြေအနေမျိုးတွင်

and it's followed by a word that starts with a /j/

ထို့နောက်၎င်းတွင် / j / မှစသောစကားလုံးတစ်လုံးပါလာသည်။

often it can combine to create the /ʤ/ sound.

မကြာခဏ၎င်းသည် / ʤ / အသံဖန်တီးရန်ပေါင်းစပ်နိုင်သည်။

'would' and 'you'

'would' နှင့် 'you'

So as the auxiliary verb 'do' reduces down to just

ဒါကြောင့်အရန်ကြိယာ 'do' ဟာတရားမျှတမှုသို့ကျဆင်းစေသည်

the /d/ sound here, we can also link it

ဤနေရာတွင် / d / sound၊ ၎င်းကိုချိတ်ဆက်နိုင်သည်

just like the other examples to say:

အခြားဥပမာများကဲ့သို့ပင်

And check out how that 'to'

ပြီးတော့ဘယ်လို 'to' ထွက်စစ်ဆေးပါ

reduces down to the schwa sound.

အဆိုပါ schwa အသံအထိလျော့နည်းစေသည်။

Instead of 'to' it's /t/

အဲဒါကို / to / 'to' ရဲ့အစား

The schwa is another important feature of fast

အဆိုပါ schwa အစာရှောင်ခြင်း၏အခြားအရေးကြီးသောအင်္ဂါရပ်ဖြစ်ပါတယ်

connected speech in English, in spoken English.

အပြန်အလှန်ပြောဆိုသောအင်္ဂလိပ်၊

So if you need to check out what the schwa is,

Now there is another exception that we

need to talk about here.

Those times when a word ends in a /t/ sound

စကားလုံးတစ်လုံး / t / အသံဖြင့်အဆုံးသတ်သည့်အချိန်များ

and it's also followed by the /j/ sound.

ထို့အပြင်၎င်းသည် / j / sound ဖြင့်လည်းပါ ၀ င်သည်။

So there is a change in these sounds

ဒီတော့ဒီအသံတွေမှာအပြောင်းအလဲတစ်ခုရှိသေးတယ်

when we link them together.

ငါတို့အတူတူသူတို့ကိုချိတ်ဆက်တဲ့အခါမှာ။

The sounds /t/ and /j/

အသံများ / t / နှင့် / j /

together can create /ʧ/

အတူတကွဖန်တီးနိုင်သည် / ʧ /

See? There are so many really common

ကြည့်ပါလား ဤမျှလောက်များစွာသောတကယ်ဘုံရှိပါတယ်

word combinations there,

အဲဒီမှာစကားလုံးပေါင်းစပ်,

ones that you can definitely start practising right now,

သင်အခုကျိန်းသေစတင်လေ့ကျင့်နိုင်သောသင်ခန်းစာများ၊

today even in simple conversations.

ပင်ရိုးရှင်းသောပြောဆိုမှုများအတွက်ယနေ့။

And there you have it, they are the simple principles of

ပြီးတော့မင်းတို့မှာရှိတယ်၊ သူတို့ကရိုးရှင်းတဲ့နိယာမတွေဖြစ်တယ်

consonant to consonant linking in spoken English.

So here in this sentence the /s/ at the end of 'hates'

pulls together with the /s/ from sandwiches.

And the /th/ sound can link to the following

နှင့် / ကြိမ်မြောက် / အသံသည်အောက်ပါလင့်ခ်ကိုချိတ်ဆက်နိုင်သည်

vowel sound.

But we don't release the air after it.

That also makes it quicker, makes it faster to say words

when we don't release the air after them.

We can link 'one' and 'of' together.

'one' နဲ့ 'of' ကိုအတူတကွချိတ်ဆက်နိုင်တယ်။

The consonant sound to the vowel.

သရသံမှဗျည်းအသံ။

And native speakers may not even pronounce that

နှင့်ပင်စပီကြောင်းအသံထွက်မည်မဟုတ်ပါ

/v/ sound.

/ v / အသံ။

You could reduce all the way down to a schwa.

သင်တစ် ဦး schwa အထိလမ်းအပေါင်းတို့ကိုလျှော့ချနိုင်ဘူး။
