Annoying things that make English difficult! Do you agree?

You've been learning English for a while now, so

I'm sure that at one time or another

Today, let's get some things off your chest.

English is annoying.

There are complicated rules,

Then there's all the silent letters.

There isn't just one type of English, right?

We use different vocabulary and slang expressions

I mean Americans even use different spelling

and grammar rules,

and some of the differences are small,

like little spelling or pronunciation changes.

Some words are completely different

بعض الكلمات مختلفة كلياً

like my jumper is called a 'sweater' in the US.

كـكلمة "سترتي" تُدعى بشكل مختلف في الولايات المتحدة

And some words, well they exist in both types of English

وبعضاً من الكلمات، أكيد، توجد في كلا النمطين من الإنجليزية.

but they mean totally different things,

ولكن يعنيان شيئاً مختلفاً جداً

like this is a thong in Australia, right? But

كـ "شبشب / شحاطة / نعلاً" في أستراليا، صحيح؟ لكن

in the US, and lots of other places, that's a thong.

في الولايات المتحدة، والعديد من مختلف الأماكن هذا يسمى "سروال داخلي".

You seen my thong? Can't find it anywhere.

To learn and understand these differences,

لكي تتعلم و تفهم تلك الاختلافات

you need to speak with actual people, right?

I mean it's fine to use language apps to learn vocabulary

but to develop your confidence as an English speaker,

and to use those skills in conversation, well,

you really need to do that with people, right?

Right so another annoying part about English.

There's lots of great grammar rules,

but then, there's also the exceptions, right?

How many times have you heard an English teacher say:

Yep that's the rule,

but there's a couple of exceptions.

For example, generally the rule

for adding -ing to the end of a word that ends in an E,

is you drop the E and you add -ing.

Caring.

Believing.

و "أؤمن"

Canoe..

و .... "قارب"

Oh except not canoeing.

أه ه ، ماعدا أن تلك ليست Canoeing.

Or dyeing either.

أو كلمة Dyeing " تصبيغ" كذلك ..

Alright how about this one?

حسناً، ما ذا عن تلك؟

For the recipe, you need to add a cup and a half of milk.

للوصفة، أنت تحتاج لوضع كوباً ونصف من اللبن

And then you need to add two and a half cups of sugar.

بعد ذلك تحتاج لإضافة كوبان ونصف من السكر.

Now ask any native English speaker why we don't say:

الآن، أسأل أي متحدث أصلي للإنجليزية لماذا لا نقول

"two cups and a half" as well.

كوبان ونصف أيضاً.

They'll say:

I don't know, it just sounds a bit weird.

Just don't say it.

What?!

'It sounds weird' isn't a rule,

what are you supposed to do with that?

Now it's annoying that English

doesn't sound like what it looks like.

Tough.

Through.

All of these words have the same letters

through the middle of them.

So they should at least have the same vowel sound,

right?

Wrong!

Every one of these words has a different

كل واحدة من تلك الكلمات تختلف

vowel sound in it.

And while this is definitely annoying,

the English language has a really, really

الإنجليزية لديها

fascinating history with words.

قصة شيقة جدا جدا لتلك الكلمات

All the way through its history.

We have words that come from

لدينا كلمات تأتي من

all different origins around the world.

أصول مختلفة حول العالم

Now English words are derived from

الآن كلمات الإنجليزية مشتقة من

Germanic languages: Latin, French, Greek

الألمانية واللاتينية، والفرنسية، واليونانية

and several other languages and dialects as well.

ولغات عديدة أخرى ولهجات مختلفة كذلك.

And over time, words were added or they were changed,

ومع الوقت، الكلمات أضُيفت أو تحورت

maybe they were lost and then replaced,

ربما فُقدت وتم استبدالها،

but the result is,

لكن النتيجة أن

there's a lot of weirdly spelt words in English.

هناك الكثير من الكلمات التي تنطق بشكل غريب في الإنجليزية.

Like quiche,

ككلمة "فطيرة البيض والكريمة"

and hiccough

و "زغطة"

and draught,

and Wednesday,

Some words have silent letters

which were once pronounced,

but aren't pronounced anymore.

And the pronunciation of some of these words

has changed over time.

But the spelling rules haven't,

so they don't really make sense anymore.

And other words

have been taken from other languages like

'cappuccino' from Italian,

or 'champagne' from French,

and the spelling hasn't changed to reflect

the English pronunciation.

In fact, the whole reason why there are two English

spelling standards,

British English and American English,

is because the Americans eventually decided

to simplify the spelling of English words

to try and make

English spelling a little less complicated.

So you can thank Noah Webster for that.

Now if spelling and pronunciation weren't

frustrating enough already, then there's homonyms,

a whole class of words which sound the same.

Maybe they look the same

but actually they're completely different words.

And it's only the context of the sentence

and sometimes the spelling

are only the way that you'll know

Like when I say "too"

you don't know if I'm actually saying to, two or too, right?

You have to listen to the context

يجب أن تستمع لسياق الكلام

to understand the meaning or see the word written.

لكي تفهم المعني أو أن ترى الكلمة مكتوبة.

So English spelling is definitely annoying!

لذا تهجئ الإنجليزية هو مزعج حقاً.

Well we can agree that it helps to keep life interesting.

حسناً يمكننا أن نتفق أنه يساعد على أن يجعل الحياة أكثر تشويقاً..

Don't you think?

ألا تعتقدون ذلك؟

Prepositions are definitely annoying.

وحروف الجر مزعجة قطعاً.

I get on my bike.

أنا أركب دراجتي

I get into my bed.

أنا أذهب إلى سريري

She's on the bus.

إنها بالحافلة

She's in the car.

إنها بالعربة

We hop off the bus.

إننا ننطلق خارج الحافلة

We get out of the car.

إننا نخرج من العربة

English prepositions are really annoying.

حروف الجر الإنجليزية حقاً مزعجة.

One preposition could have several different meanings

حرف جر واحد يمكن أن يكون له عدة معانٍ مختلفة

depending on the context.

بالاعتماد على السياق.

And the rules are not always very clear.

والقواعد عادة لا تكون واضحة جداً.

And there are a lot of exceptions when it comes to

وهناك الكثير من الاستثناءات عند الإتيان

English prepositions. Plus,

لحروف الجر بالإنجليزية، بالإضافة لـ

there's a really good chance that the preposition rules

أن هناك فرصة جيدة أو كبيرة حقاً لأن تكون قواعد استخدام حرف الجر تلك

in English are slightly different from the prepositions

بالإنجليزية مختلفة قليلاً

that you would use in your own language.

عن تلك التي تستخدمها بلغتك

So often they don't just simply translate between

لذا غالباً لا يتم ترجمتهم بين

languages, right?

اللغات، صحيح؟

Now prepositions also form part of phrasal verbs.

والآن، حروف الجر تشكل جزءاً من أشباه الجمل

And that's a whole 'nother annoying

وهذا أيضاً شيء آخر مزعج

issue about English, right?

بخصوص الإنجليزية، صحيح؟

So you've learnt that 'take' is a verb that means

لذا لقد تعلمت أن فعل "يأخذ" هو فعل يعني

to grab hold of something

أن تمسك بشيء ما

or to remove something from a place.

أو تحرك شيئاً من مكانه

You also learned the basic definitions

وأيضاً تعلمت التعريف الأساسي

of many prepositions.

لكثير من حروف الجر

And as you know, phrasal verbs are a combination

وأيضاً كما تعلم، أشباه الجمل، هي مزيج من

of a verb and a preposition, usually.

الفعل بالإضافة لحرف جر، عادة.

And the meaning of a phrasal verb is

والمعنى الذي يعبر عنه شبه الجمله

different from the meaning of just the verb on its own.

يختلف عن معنى الفعل وحده بشكل منفرد

So phrasal verbs really have to be memorised

لذا أشباه الجمل تحتاج فعلا لأن يتم حفظها

because they're often really hard

ذلك لأنها غالباً صعبة جداً

to guess the meaning of

في التخمين عن معناها

even in context.

حتى بسياق الكلام

I'm going to take off now.

"سأنصرف الآن"

I need to take in the waist of my pants a few inches.

"أحتاج أن أضم منطقة الخصر بسروالي عدة إنشات"

But you can't take off the waist of your pants.

لكنك لا تستطيع أن "تخلغ أو تصرف منطقة خصر سروالك"

You can take off your pants.

يمكنك أن تخلع بنطالك.

And you can take up the hem of your pants.

و يمكنك أن ترفع طرف بنطالك

But you can't take up your pants, you have to

لكن لا يمكنك أن ترفع بنطالك ذاته، عليك أن

pull them up, right?

تقوم بشده أو سَحبهُ لأعلى، صحيح؟

So sometimes

لذا في بعض الأحيان

a single phrasal verb can have more than one

شبه جمله واحد يمكنه أن يملك

meaning as well which makes them

أكثر من معنى أيضاً والذي يجعله

even more annoying.

مزعجاً حتى بشكل أكبر

So let's just move on for now. If you want to

Formality is not clear in English.

We don't use specific pronouns to show formality.

We use certain phrases and grammatical structures

إننا نستخدم جمل محددة وقواعد نحوية

to show formality.

لنظهر الصفة الرسمية أو الشكلية

You've got to learn them separately.

يجب علينا تعلمهم بشكل منفصل

Syllable stress is also annoying.

تشديد المقطع اللفظي مزعج أيضاً

The same exact letters can be pronounced

الحروف ذاتها يمكن نطقها

in a completely different way

بطريقة مختلفة تماماً

like minute and minute.

كـ "دقيقة" و "صغير"

Very, very small.

صغير صغير جداً

So at this point you just really want to just like

لذا، عند تلك المرحلة أنت حقاً تريد فقط أن

strangle English, right?

أن تقوم بشنق اللغة الإنجليزية، صحيح؟

Or strangle your English teacher!

أو معلمك للإنجليزية!

Okay enough moaning now, we've vented, right?

We've got our frustration off our chests.

And it's phenomenally impressive to think

Yes, there's always going to be room for improvement
