POWER or STRENGTH? 💪🏼 Confusing English Vocabulary

In this lesson, I'm going to talk about

في هذا الدرس، سوف أتحدث عن

two very similar English words.

كلمتان انجليزيتان متشابهتان

Power and strength.

القوة، والقوة ( ولهما معاني متعددة حسب السياق مثلا السلطة، القدرة، النفوذ، الشدة، الصلابة....)

They're both bold, strong, serious words

كلتا الكلمتين جريئتان، قويتان، وجديتان

and very similar in their meaning.

وجد متشابهتين في المعنى

But if you use these words incorrectly,

لكن إذا استعملت هاتين الكلمتين بشكل خاطئ

it will start to sound unnatural or just a bit weird.

سيظهر المصطلح على أنه غير عادي أو غريب شيئا ما

So that's why we're going to spend a little time today

من أجل هذا سوف نقضي اليوم بعض الوقت

talking about the differences between them.

ونحن نتحدث عن الاختلافات بين هاتين الكلمتين

Now we're more familiar with these words

نحن الآن معتادين على هذه الكلمات

when it comes to fitness, right?

عندما يتعلق الامر باللياقة البدنية

Power relates to energy and an ability to do something,

إن power تتعلق بطاقة و قدرة على عمل شيء ما

whereas strength relates to muscles

بينما strength تتعلق بالعضلات

and also an ability to do something.

وأيضا بقدرة على عمل شيء ما

It's really easy to see physical power and strength

إنه لمن السهل حقا رؤية القوة والقدرة البدنية

in athletes, right? You can see it.

في الرياضيين، هل هذا صحيح؟ يمكنك رؤيتها.

But they both have a more intangible,

ولكن لديهما معا معنى جد غامض

less visible meaning too.

ومعنى قليل الوضوع ايضا

And that's where these words often

وهنا أين يكمن كون هذه الكلمات غالبا

get confused by English learners.

So the word power refers to the ability of somebody

ما تكون محيرة ومشوشة للمتعلمين

إذن the power تدل على قدرة أحد

or something to change or affect something.

So physically, a sprinter, who's someone who

أو شيء على تغيير أو التأثير على شيء ما.

إذن بدنيا، العداء، وهو الشخص الذي

runs really fast over short distances,

يركض بسرعة قصوى في المسافة قصيرة.

they need power to change

يحتاجون للقوة ليغيروا

their speed and position quickly.

سرعتهم و موقعهم بسرعة

But it can refer to mechanical situations as well,

لكن يمكن ان تدل على الحالة الميكانيكية ايضا،

where a machine does something.

عندما تقوم الالة بشيء ما

Or it can refer to social or political situations

أو يمكن أن تدل على الحالة الاجتماعية أو السياسية

where a person or a group does something

عندما يقوم شخص أو جماعة بشيء

and this is often related to the ability to influence

وهذا غالبا يتعلق بالقدرة على التأثير

or control people or a situation.

أو التحكم بالناس أو بحالة معينة.

Now, power can also refer to your internal ability

الآن، power يمكن أيضا أن تدل على قدرتك الداخلية

to change a situation.

لتغيير حالة معينة.

You have the power to change your life

لديك القوة لتغير حياتك

if you really want to.

إذا كنت فعلا تريد ذلك.

Now the word strength has a few different meanings

الآن كلمة strength لديها معاني مختلفة

but most relevant here is that it refers to a

ولكن الاهم هنا هو انه يشير إلى

person's physical or mental ability to do something.

قدرة الشخص الجسمية أو العقلية ليقوم بشيء ما.

Obviously, it relates to physical strength,

وبوضوح، فإن له علاقة بالقوة البدنية

the strength of muscles to lift weights for example.

قوة العضلات لرفع الأوزان على سبيل المثال

But also mental strength, so the strength of your mind

ولكن أيضأ القوة العقلية، و بالتالي قوة عقلك

to believe in yourself, to persevere,

لتؤمن بنفسك، لتثابر،

to overcome problems and doubts.

لتتجاوز المشاكل والشكوك.

Now, elite athletes are strong physically and mentally

الآن، النخبة الرياضيون أقوياء جسديا وعقليا

because they must believe that they are the best,

لأنه يجب أن يؤمنوا بأنهم الافضل،

to be able to perform at their best.

ليكونوا قادرين على الآداء وهم في افضل حالاتهم.

When describing people's ability to do something,

عند وصف قدرة الناس على فعل شيء ما,

power usually refers to control over yourself,

فهنا power عادة ما تشير إلى ااسيطرة على نفسك،

control over others or control over a situation.

السيطرة على الاخرين أو السيطرة على الوضع.

So in some ways, this can be a negative expression of

إذن بطريقة ما، يمكن ان يكون هذا تعبير سلبي عن

dominance or something that must be fought for

الهيمنة أو شيء يجب المحاربة من أجله

or taken away from others.

أو أخذه بعيدا عن الآخرين.

Where strength is positive and often

بينما strength لها معنى إيجابي وغالبا

it comes from within,

تأتي من الداخل،

within a person or within a group.

من داخل شخص او من داخل مجموعة.

Generally, strength is a more positive and pure way

عموما، strength مفردة جد إيجابية وطريقة خالصة

of expressing an ability to do something.

للتعبير عن القدرة على القيام شيء ما.

Both the words power and strength are nouns

الكلمتان معا، strength و power, هما اسم ( وليس فعل أو مصدر أو....)

but just as common, are their adjective forms,

ولكن مثلما هو شائع ، إنهما على شكل نعت،

powerful and strong,

Powerful و strong (مثال:I have a strong desire to learn: لدي رغبة قوية في التعلم، قوية هنا جاءت نعتا )،

which, when used, tend to sound a little more informal.

والتي، عندما تستعمل، تبدو شيئا ما غير رسمية.

She's a strong and determined woman.

إنها إمرأة قوية ومصممة. (مصممة=لديها عزيمة)

This is the most powerful and proactive

هذه هي أقوى وأسبق (اتخاذا لنهج استباقي)

government since the 1950s.

الحكومات منذ سنة 1950.

Strength can also mean an advantage or

يمكن ايضا ل strength أن تعني شيئا إيجابي أو

a positive part about you.

جانب إيجابي عنك.

In a job interview, you might get asked this question,

في مقابلة عمل، يمكن ان تسأل هذه الأسئلة،

"What are your strengths?"

ماهي نقاط قوتك؟

For me, that's the dreaded question!

بالنسبة لي، فهذا هو السؤال الأكثر إخافة !

I hate having to talk about my strengths.

أكره ان أتحدث عن نقاط قوتي.

But what are the good features or characteristics

ولكن ما هي الميزات أو الخصائص الجيدة

that you have? That you'll be able to use

التي تملك؟ والتي ستكون قادرا على استعمالها

to help you do your job well.

التي ستساعدك على القيام بعملك بشكل جيد.

One of her biggest strengths

واحدة من بين اكبر نقاط قوتها

is her determination to succeed.

هي إصرارها على النجاح.

Keep in mind that strength has a direct opposite.

ضع بعين الاعتبار أن "strength" لها كلمة ضد مباشرة.

Weakness.

ضعف. "weakness"

We need to identify the weaknesses in our team.

نحتاج لتحديد (نقاط) الضعف في فريقنا.

But power does not have a direct opposite.

لكن "power" ليس لها كلمة ضد مباشرة.

We would just say lack of power

سنقول فقط "lack of power" نقص القوة

or describe someone as powerless,

أو نصف احدا ب " powerless" = عاجز،

unable to change a situation.

غير قادر على تغيير الوضع.

The community were powerless

المجتمع كان عاجزا

to stop the resort development.

ليوقف تطوير المنتجع.
