POWER or STRENGTH? 💪🏼 Confusing English Vocabulary

In this lesson, I'm going to talk about

two very similar English words.

دوو وشەی زۆر لە یەکچوو لە ئینگلیزیدا.

Power and strength.

They're both bold, strong, serious words

توانا(ووزە) و ھێز.

and very similar in their meaning.

وشەی چاونەترس، بەھێز، بەوزەن

زۆر لە یەک دەچن لە مانادا.

But if you use these words incorrectly,

بەڵام ئەگەر ئەم وشانە بە شێوەیەکی ناڕاست بەکاربھێنیت،

it will start to sound unnatural or just a bit weird.

بەشێوەیەکی ناسروشتی یاخود تۆزێک نامۆ دەردەکەوێت.

So that's why we're going to spend a little time today

لەبەر ئەوە ئێمە ئەوڕۆکە ھەندێک کات بەسەر دەبەین

talking about the differences between them.

بە قسەکردن دەربارەی جیاوازی نێوانیان.

Now we're more familiar with these words

ئێستا ئێمە زیاتر ئاشناین لەگەڵ ئەم وشانەدا

when it comes to fitness, right?

کاتێک دێتە سەر باسی لەشجوانی (تەندروستی) ،ڕاستە؟

Power relates to energy and an ability to do something,

ووزە(power) مانای چالاکی یاخود توانای ئەنجامدانی شتێک دەگەیەنێ،

whereas strength relates to muscles

لە کاتێکدا ھێز(strength) مانای ماسولکە دەگەیەنێ

and also an ability to do something.

وە ھەروەھا توانای ئەنجامدانی شتێکیش دەگەیەنێ.

It's really easy to see physical power and strength

زۆر ئاسانە کە ھێزو توانای جەستەیی ببینرێت

in athletes, right? You can see it.

لە وەرزشوانەکاندا ،راستە؟ دەتوانی بیبینیت.

But they both have a more intangible,

بەڵام ھەردووکیان زیاتر مانایەکی ھەست پێنەکراویان ھەیە،

less visible meaning too.

وە ھەروەھا مانایەکی شاراوەش.

And that's where these words often

وە ئەمە لێرەدا ئەم وشانە زۆر جار

دەبێتە ھۆی سەرلێشێوان لە لایەن فێرخوازانی زمانی ئینگلیزیەوە.

get confused by English learners.

So the word power refers to the ability of somebody

or something to change or affect something.

یاخود شتێک بگۆرێت یان کاریگەری بخاتە سەر شتێک.

So physically, a sprinter, who's someone who

لە لایەنی جاستەییەوە، وەرزشوانی راکردنی خێرایی، کەسێکە کە

runs really fast over short distances,

بەخێرییەکی زۆر رادەکات لە مەودایەکی کەمدا،

they need power to change

پێویستیان بە ووزە ھەیە بۆ گۆرینی

their speed and position quickly.

خێرایی و شوێنەکانیان بە خێرایی.

But it can refer to mechanical situations as well,

بەڵام دەکرێت ئاماژەش بێت بۆ بارودۆخێکی میکانیکیش،

where a machine does something.

کاتێک کە ئامێرێک شتێک دەکات.

Or it can refer to social or political situations

یاخود ئاماژە بکات بە بارودۆخی کۆمەڵایەتی یان سیاسی

where a person or a group does something

کە کەسێک یان کۆمەڵەیەک شتێک دەکەن

and this is often related to the ability to influence

ئەماش زۆر جار ئەو توانایە دەگەیەنێ بۆ کاریگەری خستنە سەر

or control people or a situation.

یان کەنترۆل کردنی خەڵک یانیش بارودۆخێک.

Now, power can also refer to your internal ability

ئێستا، (power) ووزە دەتوانێت ئاماژە بێت بۆ توانای ناوەکی

to change a situation.

بۆ گۆرینی بارودۆخێک

تۆ توانای گۆرینی ژیانی خۆتت ھەیە

You have the power to change your life

if you really want to.

ئەگەر بەراستی بتەوێت.

Now the word strength has a few different meanings

ئێستا وشەی(strength) ھێز چەند مانایەکی جیاوازی ھەیە

but most relevant here is that it refers to a

بەڵام ئەوانەی زۆرترین پەیوەندیان ھەیە پێوەی لێرەدا ئەوەیە کە ئاماژە دەکات

person's physical or mental ability to do something.

بە توانای جەستەیی یان دەروونی کەسێکەوە ھەیە بۆ کردنی شتێک.

Obviously, it relates to physical strength,

بە روونی، ئاماژە دەکات بە توانای جەستەیی،

the strength of muscles to lift weights for example.

بە نمونە توانای ماسولکە بۆ بەرزکردنەوەی قورسایی.

But also mental strength, so the strength of your mind

وە ھەروەھا ھێزی بیرکردنەوە، توانا و بەھێزی مێشک

to believe in yourself, to persevere,

بۆ باوەر بوون بەخۆت، درێژە دان بە شتێکی گران،

to overcome problems and doubts.

بۆ زاڵبوون بەسەر کێشەو گومانەکاندا.

Now, elite athletes are strong physically and mentally

ئێستا، وەرزشوانە تایبەتەکان بەھێزن لە لایەنی جەستەیی و دەروونی

چونکە پێویستە ئەوان باوەر بەوە بکەن کە باشترینن،

because they must believe that they are the best,

to be able to perform at their best.

بۆ ئەوەی بتوانن باشترین جێبەجێ بکەن.

When describing people's ability to do something,

کاتێک وەسفی توانای خەڵکی دەکەیت لە کردنی شتێکدا،

power usually refers to control over yourself,

Power زۆربەی کات ئاماژەیە بۆ کۆنترۆلکردنی خۆت

control over others or control over a situation.

کۆنترۆڵ کردنی خەڵکی یان بارودۆخێک

بۆێە ھەرچۆنێک بێت، دەکرێت دەستواژەیەکی نەرێنی بێت بۆ

So in some ways, this can be a negative expression of

dominance or something that must be fought for

دەسەڵات رۆیشتن یاخود شتێک کە پێویستە شەڕی بۆ بکرێت

or taken away from others.

وە یان بردنی لێیان.

Where strength is positive and often

لە کاتێکدا(strength) ماناکەی ئەرێنیەو زۆربەی جار

it comes from within,

لە ناوەوە(ناخەوە) دەردەچێت،

within a person or within a group.

لە ناوەوەی کەسێک یان کۆمەڵەیەک.

Generally, strength is a more positive and pure way

بە گشتی، strength زیاتر ئەرێنیەو, ڕێگایەکی پاکە

of expressing an ability to do something.

بۆ دەربرینی توانا بۆ کردنی شتێک.

Both the words power and strength are nouns

ھەردوو وشەی (power) و (strength) ناون

but just as common, are their adjective forms,

بەڵام ھەر وەک باوە، شێوەی ھاوەڵناویشیان ھەیە،

(Powerful) و بەھێز (strength)ھێز

کاتێک کە بەکار دێن،تۆزێک نافەرمی دەردەکەوێت.

powerful and strong,

which, when used, tend to sound a little more informal.

She's a strong and determined woman.

ئەو ژنێکی بەھێزە و سورە لەسەر بریارەکانی.

This is the most powerful and proactive

ئەوە بەھێزترین و چالاکترین حکومەتە

government since the 1950s.

لە ساڵی 1950وە.

Strength can also mean an advantage or

Strength ھەروەھا دەتوانرێت بە مانای باشیەک یان

a positive part about you.

لایەنیکی ئەرێنی دەربارەی تۆ بێت.

In a job interview, you might get asked this question,

لە چاوپێکەوتنی کاردا، لەوانەیە ئەو پرسیارەت لێ بکرێت،

"What are your strengths?"

ئایا لایەنە بەھێزەکانی تۆ چین؟

For me, that's the dreaded question!

بۆمن، ئەوە پرسیارێکی تۆقێنەرە!

I hate having to talk about my strengths.

ڕقم لە قسە کردنە دەربارەی باشییەکانم.

But what are the good features or characteristics

بەڵام ئایا ئەو جیاکەرەوەو تایبەتمەندیە باشانە چین

that you have? That you'll be able to use

کە تۆ ھەتە؟ کە دەتوانی بەکاریان بێنی

to help you do your job well.

بۆ ئەوەی کە یارمەتی دەربێت لە کردنی کارەکەت بە باشی.

One of her biggest strengths

یەکێک لە ھەرە بەھێزییەکانی

is her determination to succeed.

سوربونییەتی بۆ سەرکەوتن.

Keep in mind that strength has a direct opposite.

ئەوەت لە بیر بێت کە strength پێچەوانەی راستەوخۆی ھەیە.

Weakness.

Weakness لاوازی

We need to identify the weaknesses in our team.

ئێمە پێویستە خاڵە لاوازەکانی تیمەکەمان دەستنیشان بکەین.

But power does not have a direct opposite.

بەڵام power پێچەوانەی راستەوخۆی نیە.

We would just say lack of power

تەنیا دەڵێین کەمی نەبوونی وزە

or describe someone as powerless,

یان وەسفکردنی کەسێک کە بێ توانا یاخود

unable to change a situation.

نەتوانێت بارودۆخێک بگۆرێت.

The community were powerless

کۆمەڵەکە بێ توانا بوون لە

to stop the resort development.

وەستاندنی گەشەی ھاتوچۆی زۆر.
