When I was 20, I was the Messiah.

And so what exactly is a manic episode?

Typical symptoms include a lack of sleep,

And in fact, it is estimated

that three percent of all of us have bipolar.

And it's not just bipolar.

According to a study from the University of California at San Francisco,

After all, to be an entrepreneur is to conjure things that aren't real yet.

That sort of invention, that sort of vision

It's always been pants.

My vision was one for a world

Now I know what you might be thinking.

Selling pants online is not that remarkable of a vision.

But in 2007, it was improbable.

Amazon was barely focused on fashion,

Against these odds, over the next decade

we went on to raise 100 million in venture capital,

that the entrepreneurial journey was filled with dramatic mood swings,

highs and lows.

And so my bipolar disorder was cloaked,

not as symptoms of an illness or a condition,

I cycled through a couple of mood states.

Dizzyingly productive periods of hypomania,

a misunderstood [mood] state that is a diluted form of mania

without the telltale psychosis that leads to a diagnosis of bipolar I,

but all of the increased energy and creativity

and burning the candle at both ends.

You can get a lot done when you’re hypomanic.

Alternating with devastating periods of depression.

For me, both mild and severe,

And all of it was amplified by what was happening at work.

It's hard to do, actually, but but we did it.

And all of it boiled over in 2016.

In a manic episode at my New York apartment,

I rose from my bed, literally howling at the moon,

convinced I was the president

And then the darkness really set in.

I smashed my fist into a glass window pane.

And I started crying, as you might imagine.

I thought, you know, I was headed for the unconditional love thing.

ကျွန်တော် ထင်တာက ကျွန်တော်ဟာ အကြွင်းမဲ့ ချစ်မေတ္တာဆီ ဦးတည်နေတယ်ပေါ့။

He said all other forms of love are conditioned.

အခြား မေတ္တာပုံစံ အားလုံးက ကန့်အသတ်ထားတယ်လို့ သူ ပြောခဲ့တာပါ။

They are conditioned upon each of us treating each other well,

which requires accountability and boundaries,

doing all in our power to be well,

which requires initiative and self care.

And this is not just in our personal lives.

It's also at work.

Now, Manuela and I are married with a two-year-old.

And look, some days that feels like a miracle.

And while Manuela's love is a miracle

မန်နူလာရဲ့ မေတ္တာက အံ့ဖွယ်ရာတစ်ခုဖြစ်ပြီး

and Isaiah’s existence, his very existence, is a miracle,

ဟေရှာယရဲ့ ဖြစ်တည်မှုဟာ အံ့ဖွယ်ရာတစ်ခုဖြစ်ပေမဲ့၊

my getting well was not a miracle.

It was very hard work and it still is.

So I have got, and I'm proud to say,

an Olympic regimen of mental hygiene and mental fitness.

စိတ်ကြံ့ခိုင်မှုရဲအိုလံပစ် နည်းစနစ်ကို ပြောရတာ ဂုဏ်ယူမိပါတယ်။

Let me play it to you.

ဒါကို ဖွင့်ပြောပါရစေ။

I see a psychiatrist two to three times a week

ကျွန်တော် စိတ်ကုပညာရှင်တစ်ယောက်ကို တစ်ပတ်မှာ နှစ်ကြိမ်ကနေ

for a 45-minute therapy session.

သုံးကြိမ်၊ တစ်ကြိမ် ၄၅ မိနစ် တွေ့တယ်။

Now, you would think therapy once a week is enough.

But for me, I want my doctor to lay eyes on me every 72 hours

so he can assess my mood.

I've got five different medications that I take.

One every day and the other four we titrate up and down

depending on where I am.

And then I've got a relentless focus on sleep,

because sleep is for me, certainly, with bipolar,

a leading or a lagging indicator of mood.

ဦးဆောင် ဒါမှမဟုတ် နောက်ကျတဲ့ စိတ်ညွှန်မှတ်ဖြစ်လို့ပါ။

And by the way, that might be all of us.

ဒါနဲ့ ဒါက ကျွန်တော်တို့ အားလုံး ဖြစ်နိုင်ပါတယ်။

And so every morning, the first thing I do

ဒါနဲ့ မနက်တိုင်း ကျွန်တော် ပထမဆုံး လုပ်စရာက

is I send a Fitbit sleep report to a WhatsApp group

ဆရာဝန်၊ ဇနီးနဲ့ ကျွန်တော်နဲ့အတူ ဒါကို အကြာဆုံး တောင့်ခံခဲ့တဲ့

that includes my doctor, my wife

လူသုံးယောက် ပါဝင်တဲ့

and the three people who have endured this with me the longest:

WhatsApp တစ်ဖွဲ့ဆီ Fitbit အိပ်စက်မှု အစီရင်ခံစာတစ်စောင် ပို့တာပါ။

My mom, Usha, my dad, Charlie, and my sister Monica.

ကျွန်တော့ အမေ၊ အပ်ရှာ၊ အဖေ၊ ချာလီနဲ့ အစ်မ မော်နီကာတို့ပါ။

Here it is.

ဒီမှာပါ။

Every morning, this is my statement of life.

မနက်တိုင်း ဒါက ကျွန်တော့ရဲ့ ဘဝ ထုတ်ပြန်ချက်ပါ။

And what is it?

ဒါက ဘာလဲ။

It is a daily reminder to never forget what's possible.

ဒါက ဖြစ်နိုင်တာတွေကို ဘယ်တော့မှ မမေ့ဖို့ နေ့စဉ် သတိပေးချက်တစ်ခုပါ။

For all of our strengths have shadows, don't they?

အားလုံးအတွက် ကောင်းကွက်တွေမှာ မှောင်ရိပ်တွေရှိတယ်၊မဟုတ်လား။

It doesn't take a lot of brainpower to bring to mind other entrepreneurs,

ကိုယ်တိုင်နဲ့ တခြားသူတွေကို အကြီးအကျယ် ထိခိုက်စေခဲ့တဲ့ တခြားစွန့်ဦးထွင်တွေ၊

leaders and visionaries

ခေါင်းဆောင်တွေနဲ့ စိတ်ကူးကောင်းသူတွေကို

who have caused great harm to themselves and others.

အလေးထားဖို့ ဦးနှောက်စွမ်းအင် အများကြီး မလိုအပ်ဘူး။

Even society at large.

ကြီးမားတဲ့ လူ့အဖွဲ့အစည်းတောင်ပါ။

And so what do we do?

ဒီတော့ ကျွန်တော်တို့ ဘာလုပ်ကြသလဲ။

We admire their strengths.

သူတို့ရဲ့ ကောင်းကွက်တွေကို လေးစားတာပါ။

We even lionize them as individuals.

သူတို့ကို တစ်ဦးချင်းစီအနေနဲ့တောင် ဂုဏ်ပြုတယ်။

But their shadows we ignore.

ဒါပေမဲ့ သူတို့ရဲ့ မှောင်ရိပ်တွေကိုတော့ လျစ်လျူရှုတယ်။

And we do so at our individual and collective peril.

ကျွန်တော်တို့ တစ်ဦးချင်းစီနဲ့ စုပေါင်း အန္တရာယ်မှာ ဒီလိုလုပ်ကြတယ်။

I would know

၁၆ နှစ်လုံးလုံး ကိုယ့်တိုင်နဲ့

because for 16 years I ignored mine

တခြားသူတွေအတွက် နစ်နာမှုကြီးတစ်ခုကို

at great cost to myself and others.

လျစ်လျူရှုခဲ့တာကြောင့် ကျွန်တော် သိခဲ့တာပါ။

ကျွန်တော် ဘာကြောင့် ဒါကို လုပ်ခဲ့တာလဲ။

Why did I do that?

Because I didn’t want to “be bipolar.”

ဘာလို့လဲဆိုတော့ “အတက်၊အကျမြန် စိတ်ရောဂါ” မဖြစ်ချင်ခဲ့လို့ပါ။

That's what we say of people who have bipolar.

ဒါက အတက်၊အကျမြန် စိတ်ရောဂါရှိသူတွေနဲ့ ပတ်သက်ပြီး ကျွန်တော်တို့ ပြောတာပါ။

We don’t say someone “is cancer.”

တစ်ယောက်ယောက်က “ကင်ဆာဖြစ်တယ်” လို့ မပြောဘူး။

We say they have it.

သူတို့မှာ ရှိတာကို ကျွန်တော်တို့ ပြောတာပါ။

That's a first step to helping our friends

ဒါက ကျွန်တော်တို့ရဲ့ မိတ်ဆွေတွေ၊ ချစ်ခင်ရတဲ့သူတွေနဲ့

and our loved ones and our colleagues,

လုပ်ဖော်ကိုင်ဖက်တွေကို ကူညီဖို့ ပထမဆုံး ခြေလှမ်းတစ်ခုပါ၊

not by conflating their illness or condition with their identity,

သူတို့ရဲ့နာမကျန်းမှု ဒါမှမဟုတ် အခြေအနေကို သူတို့ ကိုယ်ပိုင်လက္ခဏာနဲ့ မပေါင်းစည်းဘဲ၊

but by acknowledging it as just a part of their life story

ဘဝ ဇာတ်လမ်း အစိတ်အပိုင်း တစ်ခုအဖြစ် အသိအမှတ်ပြုကာ

and then helping them confront it.

ဒါကို ရင်ဆိုင်ဖို့ ကူညီတာပါ။

At work, I think therapy should be more or less mandatory

အလုပ်ခွင်မှာ အသင်းတွေကို ဦးဆောင်သူတွေအတွက် ကုထုံးဟာ မဖြစ်မနေနီးပါး

for people who lead teams.

လုပ်သင့်တယ်လို့ ကျွန်တော် ထင်တယ်။

Second chances for unethical leaders should require great consideration.

ကျင့်ဝတ်မညီတဲ့ ခေါင်းဆောင်တွေအတွက် ဒုတိယ အခွင့်အရေးတွေ စဉ်းစားဖို့တောင်းဆိုသင့်တယ်။

Assholes should just straight up no longer be accommodated.

အယုတ်တမာတွေကို ထည့်မစဉ်းသင့်တော့ဘူး။

Boards need to step up.

ဘုတ်အဖွဲ့တွေ ရှေ့တက်လှမ်းဖို့လိုတယ်။

And all of us,

we need to raise our hands when we're not well

မကျန်းမာတဲ့အခါ လက်ထောင်ပြီး လိုအပ်တဲ့ အကူအညီကို

and then seek and secure the help we need.

ရှာဖွေကာ ဘေးကင်းအောင် လုပ်ဖို့လိုတယ်။

I have been unbelievably lucky.

ကျွန်တော်က မယုံနိုင်လောက်အောင် ကံကောင်းခဲ့တာပါ။

My family, old and new, stuck by me.

မိသားစု အဟောင်းရော၊ အသစ်ရော ကျွန်တော့ကို လက်တွဲမဖြုတ်ဘူး။

My board stuck by me,

ဘုတ်အဖွဲ့က ကျွန်တော့ကို လက်တွဲမဖြုတ်ဘူး။

my executive team stuck by me.

အမှုဆောင်အဖွဲ့က ကျွန်တော့ကို လက်တွဲမဖြုတ်ဘူး။

And I have access to wildly good health care.

အလွန်ကောင်းတဲ့ ကျန်းမာရေး စောင့်ရှောက်မှု ရခဲ့တယ်။

I love my psychiatrist.

ကျွန်တော့ရဲ့ စိတ်ကုပညာရှင်ကို ချစ်တယ်။

I call him my most expensive friend.

သူ့ကို ဈေးအကြီးဆုံး မိတ်ဆွေလို့ ခေါ်တယ်။

And I have -- and how many people have you heard this from --

I have medication that actually works.

Because of all that,

all that support and all that scaffolding,

ဒီထောက်ပံ့မှုအားလုံးနဲ့ ဒီငြမ်း အားလုံးကြောင့်၊

I am able to live and love and work with bipolar I.

ကျွန်တော်ဟာ အတက်၊အကျမြန် စိတ်ရောဂါ ၁ နဲ့ အတူ ရှင်သန်၊ ချစ်ခင်၊အလုပ် လုပ်နိုင်တာပါ။

This shouldn't be a matter of luck.

ါက ကံကြောင့်တော့ မဖြစ်သင့်ဘူး။

And so I've got one more crazy idea.

ဒါနဲ့ နောက်ထပ် ရူးသွပ်တဲ့ စိတ်ကူးတစ်ခု ရှိတယ်။

Maybe my craziest idea of all.

အရူးသွပ်ဆုံး စိတ်ကူးဖြစ်လောက်တယ်။

We need to make mental health care fundamentally acceptable.

စိတ်ကျန်းမာရေး စောင့်ရှောက်မှုကို အခြေခံ အနေနဲ့ လက်ခံနိုင်အောင် လုပ်ဖို့လိုတယ်။

Actually --

Hang on, this whole thing is going to land great.

Look, I want us to be delusional sometimes.

I want people whose brains work differently,

like mine does and like yours might,

to be able to dream crazy dreams,

to share crazy thoughts,

and God willing or universe willing,

bring those dreams to life.

But we have to keep ourselves in check, don't we?

ဒါပေမဲ့ ကိုယ့်ကိုယ်ကိုယ် ထိန်းချုပ်၊ စောင့်ကြည့်ရမယ်၊ မဟုတ်လား။

After all, only messiahs are all-knowing.

မေရှိယတွေပဲ အလုံးစုံသိတာပါ။

And entrepreneurs are not gods.

စွန့်ဦးထွင်တွေက နတ်ဘုရားတွေ မဟုတ်ဘူး။

Even when we think we are.

ကိုယ့်ကိုယ်ကိုယ် ထင်နေရင်တောင်ပါ။

We will be better humans,

ကျွန်တော်တို့ ကမ္ဘာကို ပြောင်းလဲပုံသာမက၊

building a better future together,

လမ်းတစ်လျှောက် အချင်းချင်းနဲ့

when we take stock not just of how we change the world,

ကိုယ့်ကိုယ်ကိုယ် ဆက်ဆံပုံကို ဆင်ခြင်သုံးသပ်ကြတဲ့အခါ၊

but how we treated each other and ourselves along the way.

ကျွန်တော်တို့ဟာ ပိုကောင်းတဲ့ လူသားတွေဖြစ်ကြမှာပါ။

And the president and Batman both agree.
