I guess all of you have a smartphone or an iPhone,

and this morning, probably you checked on the weather,

오늘 아침 아마도 그걸로 날씨를 확인하셨겠죠.

if its going to be rainy to carry your umbrella,

비가 온다고 했다면 우산을 가지고 나왔을테고

if it is going to be sunny to use your sunglasses,

햇볕이 난다고 했다면 선글라스를 가지고 나왔을 테고

or if it is going to be cold to have an extra coat.

춥다고 했다면 코트를 챙겼겠죠.

It's going to give you, sometime, good information and sometime not.

스마트폰은 좋은정보를 주기도 하고 그렇지 않기도 하죠.

Let me tell you,

그런데 있잖아요.

my best app is my grandmother.

제게 최고의 앱은 저의 할머니예요.

(Laughter)

She's called Mamadda.

그녀는 마마다라고 불립니다.

She can tell you not only today's weather

그녀는 오늘의 날씨 뿐만아니라

but she can predict the next 12 months,

앞으로 열두달의 날씨까지 예측하죠.

if it's going to be a good rain season or not.

좋은 우기의 계절이 올지 아닐지 알아요.

She can tell you just by observing her environment,

그녀가 날씨를 예측하는 방법은 그녀의 주변환경,

by observing the wind direction,

바람의 바람,

the cloud position,

구름의 자리,

the bird migration,

철새의 이동,

the size of fruits,

과일의 크기,

the plant flowers.

들판의 꽃들을 관찰하는 것이죠.

She can tell you by observing the behavior of her own cattle.

할머니는 그녀의 소들의 행동을 관찰해 날씨를 말해 주기도 하죠.

That's how she knows better the weather and the ecosystem

이러한 것들이 바로 할머니가 자신이 살고있는 곳의

that she's living in.

날씨와 생태계를 이해는 방식이죠.

I'm coming from a pastoralist community

저는 소목동의

who are cattle herders.

목축민 사회 출신입니다.

We are nomadic.

저희는 유목민입니다.

We move from one place to another one

저희는 물과 목초지를 찾기위해

to find water and pasture.

여기저기 옮겨다니죠.

We can move up to a thousand kilometers, the size of California, within one year.

저희는 1년안에 캘리포니아 정도되는 수천만킬로미터를 이동할 수 있습니다.

And this life helps us to live in harmony with our ecosystem.

이러한 삶의 방식 덕분에 생태계와 더불어 살아갈 수 있게 됐죠.

We understand each other.

우리는 서로를 이해하는 거죠.

For us, the nature is our supermarket,

저희에게 자연은 슈퍼마켓과 같은

where we can collect our food,

음식과 물을 구할 수 있는 곳이죠.

our water.

It's our pharmacy where we can collect our medicinal plants.

약초같은 것을 구할 수 있는 약국과도 같은 곳이기도 해요.

But it's our school,

그러나 학교야 말로

where we can learn better how to protect it

어떻게 이것들을 보호하고 우리가 필요한 것들을 돌려받을 수 있는지

and how it can give us back what we need.

더 잘 배울 수 있는 곳이죠.

But with the climate change impact,

그러나 기후변화로 인해

we are experiencing a different impact.

매우 다른 경험을 하고 있습니다.

In my community,

저의 지역사회에는

we have one of the top five fresh waters in Africa.

아프리카에서 다섯 번째로 꼽히는 최고 수질을 자랑하는 강이 있어요.

It's Lake Chad.

그 강의 이름은 차드입니다.

When my mother was born,

제 어머니가 태어났을 때

Lake Chad used to be about 25,000 kilometers square of water.

차드 강의 크키는 평방 2만5천 킬로미터였습니다.

When I was born, 30 years ago, it was 10,000 kilometers square.

제가 태어난 30년 전에는, 1만 평방km였어요

And actually now,

현재는

it's about 1,200 kilometers square of water.

평방1천2백km 정도입니다.

Ninety percent of this water just evaporated, disappeared.

강의 90%가 증발했어요. 그냥 사라졌죠.

And you have more than 40 million people

4천만 명이 넘는 인구가

living around this lake and depending on it.

이 강 근처에 살며 강에 의존하고 있습니다.

They are pastoralists.

그들은 목축민들 입니다.

They are fishermen.

어부도 있고요.

And they are farmers.

농부도 있습니다.

They do not depend on the end of the month's salary.

매달 급료를 받는 월급쟁이들이 아니라는 거죠.

They depend on the rainfall.

그들은 비에 의존하죠.

They depend on the crops that are growing

그들이 기르는 작물과

or the pasture for their cattle.

소에 의존하죠.

The shrinking resources,

줄어드는 자원때문에

you have many communities that are fighting to get access.

많은 지역사회가 자원을 얻기위해 고군분투하고 있습니다.

The first come is the first served.

먼저 오는 사람이 제공받는 거죠.

The second have to fight unto death.

늦게 오면 목숨걸고 싸워야 합니다.

So climate change is impacting our environment

기후변화가 주변환경에 영향을 끼치면서

by changing our social life,

우리의 삶까지 바꾸고 있습니다.

because the role of man and woman in this region, it's different.

이 지역의 남자와 여자의 역할은 다소 차이가 있습니다.

Man is supposed to feed his family,

남자는 가족을 부양해야하며

take care of his community,

지역사회를 돌보는 것인데

and if he cannot do that,

그걸 남자가 하지 못한다는 것은

his dignity is under threat.

그의 존엄성에 위협을 말합니다.

He cannot do anything else to pay it back.

이것말고는 다른 것을 하며 먹여살릴 수 없습니다.

So climate change takes our men far away from us.

그렇게 기후변화가 저희 남성들을 먼 곳으로 앗아간 것이죠.

That is the migration.

이주하게 된거죠.

They can migrate to a big city where they can stay for six or 12 months,

남자들은 대도시로 이민을 가 6개월에서 1년을 보내며

where they get a job, they can send back money.

일을 구하고, 식구들에게 돈을 보내주는 거죠.

If they didn't get it,

일을 구하지 못하게 되면

they have to jump into the Mediterranean

지중해로 넘어가

and migrate to Europe.

유럽으로 이민을 가는 것이죠.

Some of them die there, but none of them stop going.

어떤 이들은 목숨을 잃기도 합니다. 그러나 이민을 멈추진 않아요.

Of course, it's sad for the hosting country,

물론 이민자들을 받아들여야하는

who are developed countries,

선진국가들이

who have to adapt to host the migrants coming.

이민자들과 적응하는데 감내해야 할 부분은 안타깝게 생각해요.

But how about those who are left behind,

그렇지만 남겨진 사람들

the women and the children who have to play the role of men,

여자들과 아이들, 이제 남자의 역할과

the role of women,

여자의 역할을 모두 해야하는

who have to take care of the security,

어린아이들과 집의 어른까지

of the food, of the health of the entire family,

가족 전체의 식량과 건강을 책임져야하는

children and old people?

그 사람들을 생각해 봤나요?

So those women for me, they are my heroes,

저에겐 바로 그 여인들이 영웅입니다.

because they are innovators, they are solution makers,

그들은 혁신가이며, 문제 해결사이며

they are changing the little of the resources

지역사회를 위해 소량의 자원들을 이용해

into the big for the community.

큰 것으로 바꾸고 있습니다.

So those are my people.

바로 그들이 제 사람들이죠.

So we use our indigenous people's traditional knowledge

우리 토착민들의 전통적인 지식을 이용하여

to get better resilience to what we need to survive.

살아남기 위해 더 나은 회복성을 얻기 위해 노력합니다.

Our knowledge is not only for our communities.

우리의 지식은 우리 지역사회의 것만이 아닙니다.

It's to share with each and others who are living with us.

우리와 함께 사는 이들 서로가 함께 나누는 것이죠.

And indigenous peoples around the world

그리고 전세계의 많은 토착민들이

are saving 80 percent of the world's biodiversity.

지구상 생명의 다양성의 80% 보존하고 있다고 합니다.

That's the scientists who say that.

과학자들이 그렇게 말하죠.

Indigenous peoples in the Amazon,

아마존 토착민들은

you can find the most diverse ecosystem, better than the national park.

국립공원보다 훨씬 나은 다양한 생태계를 보존했죠.

The indigenous peoples from the Pacific,

태평양의 원주민들

the grandma and the grandpa,

그 할아버지 할머니들은

they know where to get food after the hurricane hits them.

태풍이 휩쓸고 난 뒤 어디서 식량을 찾아야할지를 알고 있습니다.

So the knowledge that our peoples know

우리 같은 토착민들이 가진 이 지식이

is helping us to survive and helping other peoples also to survive

기후변화의 영향으로부터 우리들의 뿐만아니라 다른 이들의

the climate change impact.

생존에도 도움이 되고 있습니다.

The world is losing.

세계는 이 생존게임에서 지고 있어요.

We lost already 60 percent of the species,

우리는 벌써 60%의 생물이 멸종했고

and it's increasing every day.

그 수치는 매일 늘어나고 있습니다.

So one day, I took a scientist to my community.

한번은, 과학자를 제 마을에 데리고 갔죠.

I said, you are giving the good weather information through the TV and radio,

제가 그랬죠, TV랑 라디오에 좋은 날씨 정보를 제공하니까

but how about coming to my people?

우리 마을 사람들에게 한번 가볼래?

And then they come,

마을 사람들이 모여서

they sit around,

둘러 앉았어요.

and suddenly, as we are nomadic, we just start packing our stuff,

그런데 갑자기, 유목민인 우리는 짐을 싸기 시작했죠.

and then they say, like, "Are we moving?"

그들은 말했죠. "다른 곳으로 이동해?"

I'm like, "No, we are not moving. It's going to rain."

"아니, 이동 안해. 비가 올거야."라고 했죠.

And they're like, "Oh, there's no cloud. How do you know it's going to rain?"

그러니까 그들이 말했죠."구름도 없는데 비가 올거란 걸 어떻게 알아?"

We're like, "Yeah, it's going to rain." We pack our stuff.

우리는 "알아, 비가 올거야." 하고 짐을 쌌습니다.

Suddenly, heavy rain starts coming,

갑자기, 굵은 비가 쏟아지기 시작하고

and we are seeing the scientist running around, hiding under trees

과학자들이 여기저기 뛰어다니며 나무밑에 숨거나

and protecting their stuff.

자기 물건들을 보호하기 시작했죠.

We already packed ours.

우린 이미 짐을 싼 후였죠.

(Laughter)

(웃음)

After the end of the rain, the serious discussion starts.

비가 그친후 진지한 토론이 시작되었습니다.

They say, "How do you know that it's going to rain?"

그들이 물었죠, "어떻게 비가 올 거란걸 안거죠?"

We say, "Well, the old woman observed the insects

우리는 대답했어요, "음, 마을 할머니가 곤충이

taking the eggs inside their homes,

집 안으로 알을 옮기는걸 봤거든.

and while the insect cannot talk or watch TV,

곤충이 말을 하거나 티비를 볼 수는 없지만

they know how to predict to protect their generations,

자기 후손을 보호하기위해 예측하는 방법을 알아.

how to protect their food.

자기 음식을 보호하는 법도 알고.

So for us it's the sign that it's going to rain

그러니까 그게 우리에게는 몇 시간 안으로

in at maximum a couple of hours."

비가 올거라는 징후인거지."

And then they say,

그러자 과학자들이 말하길

well, we do have knowledge,

"우리도 지식은 있지만

but we do not combine ecological knowledge and weather knowledge all together.

그것을 생태학적 지식과 날씨 지식을 통합하진 않아."라구요.

So that's how I started working

이것이 제가 기상학자들과

with meteorological scientists and my communities

우리 마을 사람들과 함께 사람들에게 기후변화에 따른

to give better information to get peoples adapted to climate change.

더 나은 정보를 제공하기 위해 일하기 시작한 계기입니다.

I think, if we put together all the knowledge systems that we have --

제 생각엔, 우리가 가진 모든 지식체계를 한데 모은다면

science, technology,

과학, 첨단기술

traditional knowledge --

그리고 전통적인 지식들 등 말이죠.

we can give the best of us to protect our peoples,

인류를 보호하고, 지구를 보호하며

to protect our planet,

무너진 생태계를 다시 살리는데

to restore the ecosystem that we are losing.

우리 모두의 최선의 노력을 할 수 있다고 생각합니다.

I did that in another way, also.

저 또한 저만의 방식으로 도왔습니다.

I used a tool that I really love a lot.

제가 정말 좋아하는 방식을 이용했죠.

It's called a 3D participatory mapping:

3D 참여 지도 작성이라고 하죠.

participatory, because it can bring women, men,

참여, 이것은 남녀노소 할 것 없이

youth, elders,

모든 세대를

all the intergenerational peoples.

포함할 수 있는 것입니다.

Then they use science-based knowledge,

뿐만아니라 과학에 기반한 지식을 사용해

and the community comes together, they build this map,

지역사회가 하나가 되어 자신들이 가진

they figure out all the knowledge that we have

모든 지식을 동원해 지도를 함께 만들죠.

about where is our sacred forest, where is our water point,

우리의 신성한 숲은 어디인지, 급수 지역은 어디인지

where is our corridor,

우리의 길은 어디인지

where is the place that we move during each season.

계절마다 우리가 이동해야하는 장소는 어디인지를요.

And these tools are amazing, because it's building capacity of women,

이 방식이 대단한 건, 여성이 능력을 기를 수 있게 도와주기 때문이죠.

because in our communities

저의 지역사회에선

women and men cannot sit together.

남자 여자가 같이 앉지 못합니다.

Men talk always, women just sitting there,

남자가 말하고 여자는 조용히 앉아있죠.

but in the back.

뒤에서요.

They are not there to take any decision.

무슨 결정을 하려고 거기 있지 않죠.

So after the men figure out all the knowledge,

남자들이 모든 정보를 알아낸 후에

we say, well, you call the women, "Come and have a look."

가서 여자들을 불러오라고 하죠 "여기와서 보세요."

They say, "Yes, sure,"

그럼, "네, 물론이죠."라고 해요.

because they've already done the first work.

왜냐하면 그들이 이미 먼저 한 일이니까요.

(Laughter)

(웃음)

When the women come,

여자들이 오면

and they look at the map, they're like, "Mm, no."

지도를 보고 다들 말해요, "음, 이거 아닌데."

(Laughter)

(웃음)

"This is wrong.

"이건 틀렸어요.

Here's where I collect the medicine. Here's where I collect the food.

여기가 약초를 구하는 장소이고 여기가 식량을 구하는 곳이죠.

Here's where I collect --"

그리고 여기가..."

So we changed the knowledge in the map,

그래서 우리는 지도의 정보를 바꿧죠.

and we called the men.

그리고 남자들을 불러요.

Well, they think about what women say.

그럼 여자들이 한 말들을 생각해보죠.

All of them shaking their heads.

그럼 모두 고개를 끄덕이죠.

"They are right. They are right.

"여자들이 옳아. 여자들이 옳아.

They are right."

여자들이 옳아."라구요.

So that's how we build the capacity of the women

이렇게 우리는 3D 참여 지도 작성을 통해

in giving them a voice

여자들에게 말할 기회를 줌으로써

in this 3D participatory mapping,

여성들이 능력을 기르도록 도왔습니다.

so women get the detailed knowledge

이렇게 여성들이 자세한 정보를 얻어

that can help the community to adapt.

지역사회가 적응할 수 있게 하는 거죠.

And man have the bigger picture knowledge.

남자들은 큰 그림을 그릴 줄 알죠.

So when we put it together,

이렇게 이것들을 같이 한데 모은

this map helps them to discuss

이 지도는 지역사회간의 출동을 완화해

but to mitigate the conflict between the communities

자원을 구하는 방법과 그것을 나누고

to access the resources,

보존하고

to share better these resources,

장기간 관리할 수 있는

to restore it

방법에 대해

and to manage it for the long term.

논의할 수 있게 도움을 줍니다.

Our knowledge is very useful.

우리가 가진 정보들은 매우 유용합니다.

Indigenous peoples' knowledge

토착민의 지식은 우리 지구에

are very crucial for our planet.

매우 중요한 것이죠.

It's crucial for all the peoples.

인류에 중요한 것입니다.

Science knowledge was discovered 200 years ago,

과학적 지식의 발견은 200년 정도 되었고

technology 100 years ago,

첨단기술의 발견은 100년 정도 됐죠.

but indigenous peoples' knowledge, it's thousands of years ago.

그러나 토착민들의 지식은 수천년 전에 발견된 것입니다.

So why we cannot put all of these together,

그러므로 이것들을 모두 함께 모아

combine those three knowledges

이 세 가지 지식들 모두를

and give the better resilience

기후변화에 영향을 받고 있는

to the peoples who are getting the impact of climate change?

사람들에게 더 나은 회복방법을 제공하는게 좋지 않을까요?

And now it's not only the developing countries.

기후변화는 개발도상국 뿐만아니라

It's the developed countries also.

선진국에도 영향을 끼치고 있죠.

We saw the hurricane. We saw the flood around all the places.

우리는 태풍의 피해를 보았습니다. 여러곳의 홍수 피해도 보았죠.

We saw the fire, even here in California.

심지어 캘리포니아도 산불 피해를 봤죠.

So we need all this knowledge to come together.

그러므로 우리는 모든 지식들을 한데 모아야 합니다.

We need the people in the center.

사람들을 중심으로 모아야 합니다.

And we need the decision makers to change,

의사결정자들을 변화시키기 위해

scientists tell them,

과학자들이 그들에게 말해야하고

and we tell them,

우리가 그들에게 말해야 합니다.

and we do have this knowledge.

우리에게 이런 지식들이 있습니다.

We have 10 years to change it.

우리에게 주어진 시간은 10년입니다.

Ten years is nothing,

10년은 금방지나갑니다.

so we need to act all together

그러니 우리 모두 힘을 모아

and we need to act right now.

지금 실행에 옮겨야 합니다.
