There's an old saying, "Just because you can't see something,

My work is -- it's a reflection of myself.

제 작품은-- 음... 저의 또 다른 모습이죠.

What I wanted to do is to

(작품을 통해) 제가 세상에 보여주고 싶었던 것은

show the world that the little things

아주 작은 것이

can be the biggest things.

가장 큰 것이 될 수도 있다는 것입니다.

We all seem to think that,

사람들은 모두 이렇게 생각하는 것 같아요.

you know, if we look down on the ground, there's nothing there.

바닥을 내려다보면 거기엔 아무 것도 없을 거라고 말이죠.

And we use the word "nothing."

우리는 이 "무" (無) 라는 단어를 자주 쓰지요.

Nothing doesn't exist, because there is always something.

그러나 "무" 란 존재할수 없습니다. 어떠한 "유" (有) 가 항상 존재하기 때문이죠.

My mother told me that, when I was a child,

제가 어렸을 적에 어머니는 제게

that I should always respect the little things.

"보잘것 없는 작은 것들을 항상 존중해라" 고 하셨죠.

What made me do this work? I shall go into my story.

어떻게 이런 작품을 하게 되었나에 대해서 제 얘길 들려 드리죠.

This all started when I was age five.

이 모든 얘기가 제가 한 5살 즈음에 시작되는군요.

What made me do it? At school, I will admit this:

무슨 일이 있었냐면요. 글쎄요, 사실을 말씀드리자면,

academically, I couldn't express myself.

어렸을때 학교에서 저는 자기 표현에 어리숙한 편이었죠.

So I was, more or less, classed as "nothing."

저는 더도 덜도 아니고 말 그대로 "무" (無) 이었죠.

My world was seen as less.

그리고 제 세상은 참 볼품없어 보였습니다.

So I decided I didn't really want to be a part of that world.

그래서인지 세상에 참여하고 싶지 않다고 결심하게 됐죠.

I thought, I need to retreat

다른 어떤 것에서

into something else.

안식을 찾아야 겠다고 생각했지요.

So when my mother used to take me to school,

그래서 어머니가 저를 학교에 바래다 주실 때

she thought I was at school,

어머니는 제가 학교에 갔다고 생각하시고 돌아서셨지만

and I used to do a U-turn, when her back was turned,

저는 어머니가 가시자마자 되돌아서서

and run off and hide in the shed at the back of the garden.

저희집 뒷뜰에 있는 창고로 뛰어들어가 숨어있곤 했죠.

Now, the one time I was in the shed,

하루는 또 그 창고에 숨어있었는데,

and my mother suspected something,

어머니가 제가 학교에 있지 않다는

thinking I was at school.

무슨 눈치를 채셨나 봅니다.

My mother was like the woman in Tom and Jerry.

제 어머니는 그 왜, 만화 '톰과 제리'에 나오는 여자 같았죠.

So you'd just see her feet.

제 눈엔 항상 어머니 발만 보였거든요.

(Laughter)

(웃음)

So I was hiding in the shed, like that.

그래서 그 창고 안에 이렇게 숨어있는데

And all of a sudden ...

갑자기...(동작)

And then I saw her legs.

걸어오시는 어머니의 다리가 보였습니다.

And then she said -- grabbed me like that, because my mother was quite big --

체격이 크셨던 제 어머니는 저를 이렇게 붙잡아 올리시더니

and she lifted me up and she says,

이렇게 물어보셨죠.

"How come you're not at school?"

"너 왜 학교에 있지 않니?" 라고요.

I told her I couldn't face it because the way

저는 어머니께 학교 선생님이 저를 대하는 방식도 싫고,

the teacher was treating me, ridiculing me,

저를 비아냥 거리고, 실패자 취급 하는 걸

and using me as an example of failure.

도저히 감당할 수 없다고

So I told her.

어머니께 말씀드렸죠.

At that age, obviously, I couldn't express it that way,

물론 그 나이엔 이런 식으로 표현할 수는 없었지만요.

but I told her I didn't feel right.

어쨌든 기분이 좋지 않다고 어머니께 말씀드렸죠.

And then she just said, "You're going back to school tomorrow."

그런데 어머니는 "내일부터 다시 학교에 가거라"

And walked off. And I didn't expect that,

그냥 이렇게 말씀하시고는 가셨습니다. 제가 생각한 것과는 다르게 말이죠.

because I expected one of these ...

저는 평상시처럼 이러실 줄 알았는데...(동작)

But I didn't get it.

매를 맞지는 않았죠.

So I'm sitting there thinking.

그래서 저는 앉은 채로 이런 저런 생각을 하며

And as I looked down on the ground,

무심코 바닥을 내려다 보았는데,

I noticed there was some ants running around.

개미 몇 마리가 기어다니고 있더군요.

And I went into this little fantasy world.

그걸 보고 저는 그대로 환상의 세계로 빠져들었죠.

And I thought,

이런 생각을 했어요.

"These ants, are they looking for the queen ant?

"이 개미들은 여왕 개미를 찾고 있는것일까?"

Or do they need somewhere to live?"

"아니면 살 곳이 필요한 걸까?"

So I thought "Perhaps,

그리고는 결국엔, "만약 내가

if I made these ants some apartments,

이 개미들을 위해 집을 만들어주면

they'll move in."

개미들이 이사오겠지" 라고 생각했죠.

(Laughter)

(웃음)

So I did.

그래서 그렇게 했어요.

And how I set about that, I got some splinters of wood.

어떻게 실행에 옮겼냐면,

And I sliced the little splinters of wood with a broken shard of glass,

깨진 유리 파편으로 나무 조각을 얇게 베어 내어서

constructed this little apartment.

작은 집을 지었죠.

Well it looked like a little shanty shed when I'd finished.

사실 완성품은 허름한 판자집에 가까웠지만

But I thought, perhaps the ant won't know, it'll probably move in.

"뭐, 개미니까 그런거 모르고 이사오겠지" 라고 생각했죠.

And so they did.

그리고는 개미들이 정말로 이사를 왔죠.

That was a bit crude, at the time. And I made all these little apartments

사실 그 집은 형편 없었죠. 그래서 또 다른 작은 집들과

and little merry-go-rounds, seesaws and swings, little ladders.

초소형 뺑뺑이, 시소, 그네, 사다리 등을 만들었죠.

And then I encouraged the ants to come 'round by putting sugar and things like that.

그리고선 그 주변에 설탕을 뿌려 더 많은 개미들이 모이게 했지요.

And then I sat down and all the ants came along.

저는 거기 앉아서 개미들이 모이는 걸 지켜보았죠.

And all I could hear was "Is this for us?"

그 개미들이 묻기를, "이게 우리집인가요?"

(Laughter)

(웃음)

And I say, "Yes, they're all for you."

그래서 그랬죠. "응. 이게 다 너희들 것이란다."

And they moved in, and decided not to pay me any rent.

그렇게 개미들은 이사를 했고, 집세는 내지 않더군요.

(Laughter)

(웃음)

And from there I was watching this little world.

그 때부터 제가 바라보던 그 작은 세상은

It became part of me.

저의 한 부분이 되었습니다.

When I discovered that I had this gift,

저에게 이런 재능이 있다는 걸 알고난 후에

I wanted to experiment with this world

저는 우리 눈에 보이지 않는

that we can't see.

세상에 대해 연구하고 싶었습니다.

So I realized that there was more to life

그리고 깨달았죠. 이 세상엔 우리 주변에서 보는

than just everything that we see around us that's huge.

큼직한 것들 이상의 무언가가 있다는 것을 말이죠.

So I started to educate myself on this molecular level.

그래서 이 분자 수준의 작은 세계에 대해 공부하기 시작했습니다.

And as I got older, I continued. I showed my mother.

그리고 커서도 계속 했지요. 언젠가 어머니께 제가 만든 것을 보여드렸더니

My mother told me to take it smaller.

어머니께서는 "더 작게 만들어라" 라고 하시더군요.

Now I shall show you something here.

아, 여기 보여드릴 게 있네요.

And I'll explain.

자, 설명해 드릴게요.

As you can see,

여기 보시다시피,

that's a pinhead.

저건 못 머리 입니다.

(Laughter)

(웃음)

(Applause)

Now that is called the Huf Haus.

이 작품명은 '허프 하우스' 입니다.

The gentleman who commissioned me to do this

제게 이 작품을 의뢰한 분이

was a gentleman called Peter Huf.

피터 허프라는 분인데,

And he says to me "Willard, can you put my house on a pinhead?"

그 분이 부탁하시길, "윌라드씨, 제 집을 못 머리 위에 올릴수 있나요?"

(Laughter)

(웃음)

So I say, "How are you going to fit in there?"

그래서 제가 그랬죠. "그럼 어떻게 그 안에 들어가시려고요?"

(Laughter)

(웃음)

And then he said to me,

그 분이 제게 이런 얘길 하시더군요.

"I don't believe you can do it. Can you really do it?"

"도대체 믿을 수 없어서요. 정말 그렇게 집을 만들 수 있습니까?"

And I says, "Well, try me."

그래서 제가 그랬죠. "글쎄요, 믿어 보세요." 라고.

And then he said, "But I don't believe that you can do this." So I said, "OK."

그런데도 허프씨는 "정말 못 믿겠다고요." 그러더군요. 그래서 제가 그랬죠. "한번 믿어 보시라고요."

So, to cut a long story short,

긴 얘긴데 짧게 말씀 드리자면,

I went home, went underneath the microscope,

저는 집에 가서 현미경을 들이대고,

and I crushed up a piece of glass,

유리 조각을 깨어서,

crushed it up.

잘게 부수었습니다.

And underneath the microscope

그리고 현미경 아래에 잘게 부스러진

there were splinters of glass.

유리 조각들을 올려 놓았지요.

Some of them were quite jagged.

어느 조각들은 꽤 모가 나 있더군요.

So I was crushing up these pieces of glass,

그렇게 잘게 부서진 유리 조각들이

which, as you can see,

여기 보시다시피

that's the actual frame of the house.

이 집의 실제 뼈대가 되었고요.

And the actual roof is made up of a fiber,

그리고 이 집의 지붕은

which I found in my sister's old teddy bear.

여동생의 오래된 곰인형에서 떼어온 털로 만들었습니다.

(Laughter)

(웃음)

So I got the teddy bear and I said,

제가 그 곰인형에게,

"Do you mind if I pull out one of your fibers?"

"너의 털을 조금 떼어가도 되겠니?" 라고 물어보고선

So I did.

그렇게 했죠.

And I looked at it beneath the microscope. And some of it was flat.

그 섬유를 현미경으로 들여다보니까 어떤것들은 좀 납작해 보이더군요.

So I decided to slice these up

그래서 제가 만든 도구를 사용하여

with the tool that I make

얇게 썰어 내기로 했죠.

by -- I sharpen the end of a needle into a blade.

그 도구는 바늘 끝을 날카롭게 갈아서 만든 칼인데요.

And then I actually

그리고는,

slow down my whole nervous system.

제 몸의 모든 신경을 잠잠하게 한 후에

And then I work between my heartbeat,

심장 박동에 맞춰서 작업을 합니다.

I have one-and-a-half seconds

심장 박동 간격인 1½초 동안에

to actually move.

손을 움직일 수 있죠.

And at the same time I have to watch I don't inhale

그리고 동시에 숨쉬다가 작품을 실수로 빨아 들이지 않도록

my own work, at the same time.

조심해야하죠.

(Laughter)

(웃음)

(Applause)

Because that has happened to me.

사실 그런 적이 있거든요.

(Laughter)

(웃음)

So what I did, like I said, come back to the glass.

아, 다시 유리 이야기로 돌아와서,

I found these little bits of glass.

그렇게 부서진 유리를

And I had to make them square.

네모 모양으로 만들어야 했는데,

So I'm thinking "How can I do this?"

어떻게 해야하나 고민하다가

So what I did, I got an oilstone. Broke the edge of an oilstone off.

숯돌의 모서리를 잘라 내서

And what I did, I took pieces of glass. And I started to rub them.

어떻게 했냐면 유리 조각 파편을 작은 숯돌에 비볐지요.

I used a little tweezer which I made from a hair clip.

머리 핀을 이용해서 만든 쪽집게를 사용해서요.

And I built rubber around the end of the tweezer so it wouldn't crush the glass.

그 쪽집게 끝 부분에는 고무를 씌워서 유리가 부스러지지 않게 했고요.

And then I started rubbing, very very gently,

그리고 유리 조각이 정사각형 모양이 될 때까지

till some of the edges were quite square. And then I constructed it.

아주 조심스럽게 문질렀습니다. 그렇게 그 집을 만들었죠.

And how I constructed it,

어떻게 만들었냐면,

is by making grooves in the top of the pinhead.

못 머리 위에 홈을 파서

And then pushing the glass in with its own friction.

그 자체의 마찰을 이용해 유리조각을 끼워넣었지요.

And as I was doing it, what happened?

그런데 그러는 사이에 어떻게 되었는지 아세요?

The instrument that I used turned into a catapult.

이 도구는 마치 새총처럼 되어버려서

And it went like this ...

결국엔 이렇게...(동작)

And then that was it.

되고 말았습니다.

(Laughter)

(웃음)

Gone.

날아가 버렸죠.

So I'm thinking, "Mr. Huf isn't going to be very happy

그래서 저는 "아, 허프씨가

when I told him his house has gone to another,

집이 그냥 허공으로 날아가버렸다면

into the atmosphere somewhere."

좋아하지 않으실건데..." 라고 생각했죠.

So to cut the story short,

그래서 긴 얘길 좀 짧게 하자면,

I decided that I had to go back and do it.

'처음부터 다시 만들어야 겠다' 라고 마음 먹고선

So I found some more. And I decided to, sort of,

재료를 다시 준비했습니다.

construct it very, very slowly,

그리고선 아주 천천히 숨을 가다듬고

holding my breath, working between my heartbeat,

심장 박동 사이 사이를 이용해서 다시 작업하였죠.

and making sure everything is leveled.

모든 것을 잘 맞춰가면서 말이죠.

Because it's such a small sculpture,

제 조각품들은 워낙 작기 때문에,

nothing can go wrong.

뭐 하나 잘못되어도 안 되거든요.

And I decided to build it up.

그래서 만들기로 결심한 것이죠.

Then I used fibers out of my jumper,

제 잠바의 섬유를 떼어 내어서요.

which I held and stretched.

그걸 잡아 늘여서

And made the beams going around the house.

집의 들보로 만들었죠.

And the actual windows and the balcony

그리고 창문과 발코니는

had to be sort of constructed.

이것 저것을 사용해서 만들었고요.

I used a money spider's web

어떤 것들은

to actually attach certain things,

거미줄을 사용하여 접착하였는데

which sent me insane.

정말이지 저를 미치게 만들더군요.

But I managed to do it.

그렇지만 해내고야 말았죠.

And when I finished it, I came back the next day.

그렇게 완성해 놓고 그 다음 날 다시 보니까

I noticed that the house was occupied.

그 집에 누가 입주해 있더군요.

Have we ever heard of a dust mite?

먼지 진드기라고 들어보신 적 있으세요?

Darren dust mite and his family moved in.

데렌 진드기씨와 그의 가족이 입주했더군요.

(Laughter)

(웃음)

So basically I'd completed the house.

그렇게 완성한 집이

And there you are.

바로 이것입니다.

(Applause)

(Laughter)

Right. As you can see,

맞아요. 보시다시피,

Bart Simpson is having a little argument.

바트 심슨 (주: 심슨 가족의 아들)이 논쟁을 벌이고 있군요.

I think they're arguing about the space on the pin.

못머리의 공간에 대해 다투고 있는 것 같군요.

There's not enough room for the two of them.

둘이 같이 있기엔 좀 좁은 것 같습니다.

So I didn't think he was going to throw Bart off.

사실 전 아빠 심슨이 바트를 밀어내지 않을거라 생각해요.

I think he was just warning him actually.

그저 바트에게 경고를 주는 것 뿐이죠.

But this one was made out of a nylon tag

이 작품은 제 셔츠에 붙어있는

out of my shirt.

나일론 상표로 만들었습니다.

What I did, I plucked the tag out

상표를 떼어 내어서

and put it underneath the microscope.

현미경에 올려놓고

I used the needle which has got a slight blade on the end.

끝이 날카로운 바늘을 사용했죠.

Can anybody see the blade on the end of that needle?

다들 이 바늘 끝의 날이 보이시나요?

Audience: No.

(관객: 아니요.)

WW: So what I did is the same process where I

그래서 원래 했던 방식대로

just kind of hold my breath

숨을 죽이고

and just work away very, very slowly,

아주 아주 천천히 작업을 해나갔죠.

manipulating the plastic, cutting it, because it behaves different.

플라스틱의 성질을 잘 조절해가며 잘라내었습니다.

Whenever you work on that level, things behave different.

사실 분자적인 수준에선 물질의 성질이 달라지거든요.

Because it's on this molecular level things change

분자 환경에선 모든 원칙이 변하고

and they act different.

물질이 다르게 작용하죠.

And sometimes they turn into little catapults and things go up in the air.

어떤 것들은 작은 새총처럼 그냥 허공으로 사라지기도 합니다.

And, you know, all different things happen.

예상치 못했던 일들이 일어나지요.

But I had to make a little barrier, going around it, out of cellophane,

그래서 셀로판으로 작은 장벽을 만들어

to stop it moving.

움직이지 않게 하면서 작업을 했죠.

Then static electricity set in.

그러는 중 정전기가 생겨서

And it went ...

이렇게 되었죠.

And I'm trying to remove it. And the static is interfering with everything.

그래서 저는 이걸 제거하려 하는데, 정전기가 계속 방해를 하고

So there is sweat dripping off my head,

머리에선 땀이 떨어지더군요.

because I have to carve Homer Simpson like that, in that position.

왜냐면 호머 심슨 (아빠 심슨)을 이런 형태로 조각해야 했거든요.

And after I've cut out the shape,

그래서 이 모양을 만든 후에

then I have to make sure that there is room for Bart's neck.

바트의 목 부분이 들어갈 자리를 만들어야 했죠.

So after I've done the same thing,

그래서 같은 방식으로 다 만든 후에

then I have to paint it.

색을 입혀야 했지요.

And after I've actually sculpted them,

색칠하는 것은

I have to paint them.

조각을 다 마친 후에 하지요.

I experimented with a --

그래서 제가 실험삼아

I found a dead fly.

죽은 파리 머리에서

And I plucked the hair off the fly's head.

털을 뽑아 내어서

Decided to make a paintbrush.

붓으로 사용하기로 결정했죠.

(Laughter)

(웃음)

But I would never do it to a living fly.

하지만 살아있는 파리로는 절대로 그럴 수 없더라구요.

(Laughter)

(웃음)

Because I've heard a fly in pain.

파리가 고통스럽게

And they go "Meow! Ow!"

"아아아아야! 아퍼!" 라고 하는 것이 들리는 거에요.

Even though they get on our nerves,

파리가 아무리 사람을 귀찮게 해도

I would never kill an insect

살아있는 곤충을 죽일 수는 없더라고요.

because, "All creatures great and small" --

어느 찬송가엔가 "살아있는 모든 크고 작은 생명..."

there is a hymn that says that.

이란 구절이 있잖아요.

So what I decided to do

그래서 결국에는

is to pluck fine hair out of my face.

제 얼굴에 있는 솜털을 뽑아서 사용하기로 했습니다.

And I looked at it underneath the microscope.

그것을 현미경으로 들여다보고

That was the paintbrush.

붓으로 사용했죠.

And whilst I'm painting I have to be very careful,

그리고 색칠할 때에는 굉장히 조심해야 합니다.

because the paint starts to turn into little blobs.

물감이 뭉쳐서 얼룩이 되버릴 수도 있고

And it starts to dry very quickly.

그리고 굉장히 빨리 마르기도 하거든요.

So I have to be very quick.

그래서 신속하게 작업해야 하죠.

If I'm not, it will end up looking

그러지 않으면 원래 의도와는 전혀 다른

not like what it's supposed to look like.

작품이 될 수도 있거든요.

It could end up looking like Humpty Dumpty or somebody else.

험티 덤티 같은 것이 되버릴 수 있어요. (주: 험티 덤티--동요집에 나오는 계란 모양 캐릭터)

So I have to be very very careful.

그래서 아주 조심해야 합니다.

This one took me approximately,

이 작품을 완성하기 까지는

I would say, six to seven weeks.

대략 6-7주 정도 걸렸습니다.

My work, rough estimate,

제 작품은 대체로

sometimes five, six to seven weeks;

5주에서 6주, 때로는 7주 정도 걸립니다.

you can't always anticipate.

꼭 정해져 있는 건 아닙니다.

(Applause)

As you can see,

이것은 보시다시피,

that's Charlton Heston brought down to size.

영화배우 찰턴 헤스턴을 축소시킨것입니다. (주: 영화 '벤허' 주인공)

(Laughter)

(웃음)

He says to me, "Willard" --

그가 저에게, "윌라드씨"

You can see him saying, "Why me?"

"왜 하필 저에요?" 라고 말하는 게 보이실 겁니다.

I says, "I enjoyed your film. That's why."

"당신 영화를 좋아하기 때문이죠" 라고 말하고 싶네요.

As you can see, there's an aphid fly there.

보시다시피 저건 진딧물 파리인데요.

That's just to show the scale

조각품의 실제 사이즈와

and the actual size of the sculpture.

비율을 보여주기 위한 것이죠.

I would say it probably measures ...

이 작품은 한...

a quarter of a millimeter.

¼ 밀리미터 정도 됩니다.

In America they say a period stop.

책에 마침표 있잖아요.

So say if you cut a period stop in half,

그 마침표 점을 반으로 자르면

a full stop, that's about the size of the whole thing.

이 조각의 크기 정도 될겁니다.

It's made -- the chariot is made of gold.

이 경마차는 금으로 만들었고요

And Charlton Heston is made of a floating fiber,

찰턴 헤스턴은 공기에 떠다니는

which I took out of the air.

섬유질 먼지를 잡아서 만들었습니다.

When the sunlight comes through the window you see these little fibers.

집에 햇살이 들어올 때 자세히 보면 먼지가 보이잖아요.

And what I normally do is walk 'round a room --

그래서 저는 종종 방 안을 걸어다니며

(Laughter) --

(웃음)

trying to find one. And then I put it underneath the microscope.

공기에 떠다니는 먼지를 잡죠. 그리고 그것을 현미경에 놓습니다.

I remember one time I was doing it, and the window was open.

하루는 제가 그렇게 먼지를 잡고 있는데 마침 창문이 열려 있었죠.

And there was a lady standing by the bus stop.

밖에는 어떤 여자분이 정류장에서 버스를 기다리고 있었고요.

And she saw me walking around like this.

그 분이 제가 방안을 이렇게 돌아다니는 걸 보고 말았습니다.

(Laughter)

(웃음)

And then she looked at me.

그 분이 저를 이렇게 보더군요.

And then I went ...

그래서 제가...(동작)

And then she went, "Hmm, OK, he's not mad."

그랬더니 그 분이 "아, 저 사람 미친게 아니군." 그랬을 겁니다.

Yeah, to actually do this thing --

자, 그래서 이 작품을 만들기 위해서요.

the actual chariot is made of gold.

경마차는 금으로 만들었고요.

I had a 24-karat gold ring.

저한테 24캐럿의 금반지가 있었는데,

And I cut off a little flake of gold.

얇게 한 조각을 긁어 내어서

And I bent it 'round,

자르고 구부리고 해서

and made it into the chariot.

이 경마차를 만들었죠.

And the horse is made from nylon.

그리고 이 말은 나일론으로 만들었고요.

And the spider's web is for the reins on the horse.

말의 고삐는 거미줄로 만들었습니다.

To get the symmetrical shape of the horse

말의 모양을 대칭적으로 잡아내는 건

was very difficult,

굉장히 까다롭더군요.

because I had to get the horse to rear up

왜냐면 말이 달리고 있잖아요. 그래서 말을 들어올려서

and look as though it was in some kind of action.

어떤 움직임이 있는 것처럼 보여야 했거든요.

When I did this one,

이 작품을 만들 때

a gentleman seen it and said to me,

어떤분이 이걸 보시고 저에게,

"There's no way you can do this, you must have used some kind of machine.

"이런 걸 만들었다는 건 불가능 합니다. 무슨 기계를 썼을 겁니다.

There's no way a man can do that.

사람이 이런 것을 만들어 낼 수는 없어요.

It must be a machine."

그러니까 기계로 한 게 분명해요." 그러시더군요.

So I says, "OK then, if you say it's a machine ..."

That one took me approximately six weeks.

이 작품은 완성하는데 한 6주 정도 걸렸습니다.

The most famous statue in the world.

세계에서 가장 유명한 동상 이지요.

This one, I would say,

이 작품은

was a serious challenge.

정말 어려운 도전이었습니다.

(Laughter)

Because I had to put the torch on the top.

왜냐하면 맨 위에 횃불을 올려야 했거든요.

That one is, more or less, the same type of process.

이 작품도 거의 대동소이하게 비슷한 방법으로 만들었죠.

The bottom of it is carved from a grain of sand,

동상 밑의 받침은 모래 한알을 갉아 내어서 만들었고요.

because I wanted to get a bit of the stone effect.

돌 처럼 보이게 만들고 싶었거든요.

I used a microscopic shard of diamond

그리고 아주 미세한 다이아몬드 조각을 사용해서

to actually carve the actual base.

받침을 조각했고요.

Well, I can look at this one and I can be very proud of this,

제가 봐도 이 작품은 참 자랑스럽습니다.

because that statue has always sort of

왜냐하면 이 동상은 항상

kept an image in my head of, you know,

제 머리속에, 왜 아시죠,

the beginning of people coming to America.

사람들이 미국에 처음 온 순간 있잖아요.

So it's sort of Ellis Island, and seeing America for the first time.

엘리스 섬이죠, 미국을 처음으로 보게 되는 순간 (주: 엘리스섬--뉴욕항의 작은 섬, 전에 이민 검역소가 있었음)

And that's the first thing they saw.

그리고 사람들이 제일 먼저 보게되는 건 이 동상인 거죠.

So I wanted to have that little image.

그 모습을 담아내고 싶었어요.

And this is it.

그게 바로 이거죠.

(Laughter)

And we all know that is the Hulk.

그리고 다 아시다시피 이것은 '헐크' 인데요.

I wanted to create movement in the eye of a needle.

저는 바늘 구멍에 어떤 움직임을 부여하고 싶었어요.

Because we know we see needles,

우리는 바늘은 알지만,

but people aren't familiar with the eye of a needle

대부분 사람들이 실을 끼워넣는 일 말고는

apart from putting a thread through it.

바늘 구멍에 대해서는 별 생각을 안 하잖아요.

So I broke the needle.

그래서 저는 바늘 구멍을 부러뜨리고

And made a needle look like

마치 헐크가 부숴 버린 것처럼

the Hulk's broken it.

만들었습니다.

It's -- I had to make little holes

바늘 구멍 밑 부분에 헐크의 발을 놓기 위해

in the base of the needle, to shove his feet in.

작은 홈을 파내었고요.

So most of my work, I don't use glue.

제 작품의 대부분은 접착제를 사용하지 않습니다.

They go in with their own friction.

재료 자체에서 생기는 마찰을 사용해

And that's how I managed to do it.

접착하지요.

As you can see, he's looking at the moment. He's got a little grimace on his face.

보시다시피 헐크가 얼굴을 좀 찡그리고 있는데요.

And his mouth must be probably about

헐크 입은 아마도

three microns.

3 미크론 정도 될겁니다. (주: 미크론--100만분의 1미터)

So the eyes are probably about one micron or something.

그러니까 그의 눈은 아마 1 미크론 정도 일거고요.

That ship there,

저기 저 배는

that's made from 24-karat gold.

24캐럿 금으로 만들었습니다.

And I normally rig it with the web of a money spider.

배에 있는 로프들은 원래는 거미줄을 사용하지만

But I had to rig it with strands of glue.

이번엔 풀의 줄기를 사용해야 했죠.

Because the web of the spider, it was sending me insane,

거미줄은 움직이기 힘들어서

because I couldn't get the web to move off.

저를 미치게 했거든요.

And that's 24-karat gold. And it's constructed. I built it.

그래서 이것은 24캐럿의 금이고, 그렇게 만들었습니다.

Constructed each plank of gold.

금박 하나 하나를 제작 했죠.

And the whole thing is sort of symmetrical.

전체적으로 대칭적이고요.

The flag had to be made out of little strands of gold.

깃발은 금조각으로 만들었습니다.

It's almost like doing a surgical operation to get this thing right.

이것을 제대로 하려면 외과 수술을 하는 것과 비슷해요.

As you can see, dressage.

보시다시피, 이것은 말 길들이는 사람입니다.

It's something I wanted to do just to show how I could get the symmetrical shape.

이것을 만들게 된 이유는 대칭적인 모형을 만들어보고 싶었기 때문입니다.

The actual rigging on the reins on the horse

말 고삐의 줄은

are made from the same sort of thing.

비슷한 물질로 만들었습니다.

And that was done with a particle from my shirt.

제 셔츠의 입자로 만들었지요.

And the pinhead I've made green around there

그리고 이 못 머리의 초록색은

by scraping the particles off a green shirt

초록색 셔츠의 입자를 긁어내어

and then pressed onto the needle.

못 머리에 눌러주었습니다.

It's very painstaking work,

제 작품 활동은 꽤나 공이 들어가는 일입니다.

but the best things come in small packages.

하지만 최고의 것들은 항상 작은 것에서부터 비롯되는 거니까요.
