Christopher Deam: Restyling the classic Airstream trail

So looking at their three main markets

we came up with the solution of taking

and a trailer, in kind of a

fresh, new contemporary look.

그리고 현재는 없는 전혀 새로운 어떤 것을 선보이려 했어요.

When this trailer showed up at my shop

버클리의 내 가게에서 이 트레일러를 보여줬을 때

in Berkeley, I'd actually never stepped foot in

나는 층층이 밟고 들어가는 방식을 원치 않았어요.

an Airstream trailer, or any other trailer.

에어스트림 트레일러나 다른 어떠한 트레일러들 처럼 말이죠.

So I can be somebody that can look at this

in a totally fresh perspective and see if I can

optimize it in its most idealistic fashion.

I decided I had to do some research

무언가 연구를 해야 할 필요성이 생겼네요.

and really figure out what had gone wrong

정말로 생각해봤어요. 무엇이 잘못되어가고 있었는지..

somewhere along the history of Airstream.

지금까지 에어스팀이 만들어지고 있었던 동안에요...

What I discovered in these interiors is that

내가 이 인테리어 속에서 발견한 것은요.

there was a disconnect between the exterior shell

인테리어와 외관디자인 사이에

and the interior architecture of the pieces.

상관관계가 없다는것이었어요.

In that the shell was originally conceived

이 외관은 처음부터

as a lightweight, modern, futuristic,

가볍고, 모던하고, 미래지향적이고,

high-tech pod for hurtling down the freeway, and

고속도로에서 충돌을 방지하는 하이테크 패드로 만들어졌어요.

the interiors were completely out of sync with that.

이 인테리어는 완벽히 그것과 불협화음이었어요.

In fact it appeared like they

사실상, 이 놈이 탄생될 때에는

referenced a mountain cabin.

산속의 방갈로를 참고 했었었죠.

That seemed really like a crisis to me,

근데 그것이 나를 정말로 위험하게 만들었어요.

that they had never been able to

이 트레일러는 절대로

develop a vocabulary

저 단어들 속에서 벗어날 수 없었어요.

about escape, and about travel, and modernity

자유로움, 여행, 현대적인...

in this trailer that was consistent with the shell.

그러한 표현이 외관과는 잘 어울렸어요.

We really needed to do some archeology

우리는 이 트레일러에게 고고학적인게 필요하며

in the trailer itself to figure out what's authentic

이 에어스팀팀 트레일러속에 그것이 필요할만한 확실한

in an Airstream trailer,

근거가 있는지 찾아보았어요.

and what feels like it has true purpose and utility.

We stripped out all the vinyl

and zolatone paint that was covering up

this just fantastic aluminum shell.

We took off all the visible hardware and trim

that was kind of doing the country cabin thing.

시골 오두막집 같아 보이는 것들은 다 제거했어요.

I literally drew on the walls of the trailer,

말 그대로 트레일러의 벽이 그려졌네요.

mocked it up in cardboard,

판지로 목업을 하고,

we'd come in and cut, decide things were wrong,

자르고, 잘못된 부분을 찾아내고

pull it out, put it back in.

밖으로 밀고 뒤로 놓고..

The main goal was to smooth out the interior,

메인 목표는 부드러운 외관 인테리어였고,

and begin to speak about motion,

작동원리에 대해서도 말했어요.

and mobility, and independence.

이동성과, 독립성도 중요했죠.

The biggest difficulty on one of these trailers

이 트레일러의 가장 큰 문제점은

is that when you're designing there's actually no

당신이 설계할 때 그것이 실제로

logical place to stop and start materials

메탈로 만들기엔 논리적으로 말이 안되는 공간이라는 것이었습니다.

because of the continuous form of the trailer.

트레일러의 모양을 계속 유지시켜야 하기 때문이죠.

There's no such things as two walls and a ceiling

coming together, where you can change materials and shapes.

So that became a challenge.

Compounding that,

the material of choice, laminate,

that I was trying to highlight,

only bends in two dimensions.

It's a compound curve interior.

What I had to devise was

a way of fooling the eye

into believing that all these panels

are curved with the shell.

What I came up with was

a series of second skins

that basically float over the aluminum shell.

And what I was trying to do there was

direct your eye in the space,

so that you would perceive the geometry in a different way,

They also gave us a way to run power

and rewire the trailer without tearing out the skin,

so they function as an electrical chase.

That's the trailer, pretty much finished.

That trailer led to another commission,

to participate in whats called Tokyo Designers Block.

Its a week of furniture design events in Tokyo, in October.

Teruo Kurosaki, who owns a furniture company called Idee,

he asked me to ship him two trailers to Tokyo.

He said one he would like to

make a real trailer, functioning, and we would sell that one.

Trailer number two, you have a blank slate, you can to anything you want.

We came up with a fantasy scenario

우리는 시나리오가 하나 떠올랐습니다.

of a DJ traveling around the States,

that would collect records and go on tours.

레코드를 모으고, 여행을 하는겁니다.

This trailer housed two turntables,

mixer, wet bar, fridge, integrated sound system.

믹서, 작은 바, 냉장고, 통합사운드 시스템이 있어요.

It's got a huge couch, fits quite a few people,

and basically we'd had a great time with this.

And so in this trailer I took it upon myself to think about travel,

A lot of these ideas migrated into

This brings us up to the time that I started consulting to Airstream.

They came to me and said,

"Well, what can we do to freshen this thing up?

Anyway, I went out to Airstream

about six times during the process of building this prototype,

and it's called the Bambi prototype.

I thought, "Finally, oh yeah great,

big company, I'm gonna work with somebody with money

for tooling and molding."

And I walked in their prototype facility, and

it's exactly like my shop, only bigger --

So the problem became -- and they set this dilemma to me --

that you have to design the interior using only our existing technology,

The trailers themselves are actually hand-built.
