Now this is extreme work.

But Kristin’s learning to do her job the way that most of us do:

My whole life I’ve been fascinated by this kind of learning.

It feels elemental, part of what makes us human.

It has different names: apprenticeship, coaching, mentorship, on the job training.

이렇게 배우는 방식은 여러 이름이 있습니다.

'어프렌티십', '코칭', '멘토링', '실무 훈련' 등.

In surgery, it’s called “see one, do one, teach one.”

수술 에서는 '보고 따라하고 가르치다'로 부릅니다.

But the process is the same,

하지만 과정은 똑같으며

and it’s been the main path to skill around the globe for thousands of years.

전 세계 사람들은 수천 년간 이런 식으로 기술을 배워왔습니다.

Right now, we’re handling AI in a way that blocks that path.

하지만 오늘날 인공지능의 사용에 의해 이런 과정이 방해받고 있습니다.

We’re sacrificing learning in our quest for productivity.

효율성을 향상시키려는 과정에 의해 배움의 기회가 사라지는 것이지요.

I found this first in surgery while I was at MIT,

제가 MIT에 있을 때 수술을 하면서 이런 사실을 처음 알게 되었는데

지금은 이런 현상이 곳곳에서 벌어진다는 것을 확인했습니다.

but now I’ve got evidence it’s happening all over,

in very different industries and with very different kinds of AI.

여러 가지 산업 분야에서 매우 다양한 인공지능이 쓰이고 있지요.

If we do nothing, millions of us are going to hit a brick wall

아무런 대처가 없다면

수백만 명의 사람들이 아무것도 하지 못하고

as we try to learn to deal with AI.

인공지능을 다루는 방법 만을 공부해야 할 것 입니다.

Let’s go back to surgery to see how.

Fast forward six months.

6개월 후 입니다.

It’s 6:30am again, and Kristen is wheeling another prostate patient in,

but this time to the robotic OR.

다만 이번에는 로봇 수술실로 향합니다.

The attending leads attaching

a four-armed, thousand-pound robot to the patient.

They both rip off their scrubs,

head to control consoles 10 or 15 feet away,

and Kristen just watches.

The robot allows the attending to do the whole procedure himself,

He knows she needs practice.

So Kristin has no hope of getting anywhere near those nerves during this rotation.

She’ll be lucky if she operates more than 15 minutes during a four-hour procedure.

And she knows that when she slips up,

he’ll tap a touch screen, and she’ll be watching again,

Like all the studies of robots and work I’ve done in the last eight years,

I started this one with a big, open question:

How do we learn to work with intelligent machines?

우리는 어떻게 인공지능과 일하는 법을 배워야 할까?

To find out, I spent two and a half years observing dozens of residents and surgeons

답을 찾기 위해 2년 반 동안

수십여 명의 외과 레지던트와 주치의들이

doing traditional and robotic surgery, interviewing them

전통 수술과 로봇 수술을 하는 것을 지켜보고

배움의 과정에 있는 레지던트들을 인터뷰하거나

and in general hanging out with the residents as they tried to learn.

I covered 18 of the top US teaching hospitals,

and the story was the same.

Most residents were in Kristen's shoes.

They got to “see one” plenty,

but the “do one” was barely available.

직접 하는 것은 별로 가능하지 않았습니다.

So they couldn’t struggle, and they weren’t learning.

This was important news for surgeons, but I needed to know how widespread it was:

Where else was using AI blocking learning on the job?

인공지능 때문에 실무 교육을 실행하기 어려워지는 경우는 또 어디에 있을까요?

To find out, I’ve connected with a small but growing group of young researchers

답을 찾기 위해 작지만 점점 커지고 있는 젊은 연구원 그룹에 연락을 했습니다.

who’ve done boots-on-the-ground studies of work involving AI

이들은 인공지능에 관련된 여러 분야에 대해 실용적인 연구를 해왔지요.

in very diverse settings like start-ups, policing,

예를 들면 창업, 치안 유지,

투자 은행 업무 그리고 온라인 교육까지 포함되어 있습니다.

investment banking and online education.

Like me, they spent at least a year and many hundreds of hours observing,

저처럼 그들은 적어도 1년 이상 그리고 수백 시간 동안

연구 대상을 관찰하고 인터뷰하고 종종 그들과 함께 업무를 수행했습니다.

interviewing and often working side-by-side with the people they studied.

We shared data, and I looked for patterns.

No matter the industry, the work, the AI, the story was the same.

Organizations were trying harder and harder to get results from AI,

and they were peeling learners away from expert work as they did it.

Start-up managers were outsourcing their customer contact.

Cops had to learn to deal with crime forecasts without experts support.

Junior bankers were getting cut out of complex analysis,

and professors had to build online courses without help.

And the effect of all of this was the same as in surgery.

Learning on the job was getting much harder.

직접 일을 하면서 배우는 것은 매우 어려워지고 있습니다.

This can’t last.

계속 이러면 안 됩니다.

McKinsey estimates that between half a billion and a billion of us

맥캔지는 2030년이 되면 일상 업무에서

5억 명에서 10억 명 사이의 사람들이

are going to have to adapt to AI in our daily work by 2030.

인공지능과 함께 일하는 삶에 익숙해져야 할 것이라고 말했습니다.

동시에 경험을 통해서 기술을 배우는 과정도

And we’re assuming that on-the-job learning

오늘날과 마찬가지로 계속될 것 입니다.

will be there for us as we try.

Accenture’s latest workers survey showed that most workers learned key skills

엑센츄어의 최신 조사 결과에 따르면

대부분 노동자들이 정식 교육보다 직장에서 실제로 일을 하면서

on the job, not in formal training.

핵심 기술을 배우는 것으로 나타났습니다.

So while we talk a lot about its potential future impact,

인공지능의 잠재적 영향력에 대해서 이야기 할 때

the aspect of AI that may matter most right now

지금 현재 가장 중요한 부분은

is that we’re handling it in a way that blocks learning on the job

인공지능으로 인해 현장에서의 배움이 줄어든다는 것입니다.

just when we need it most.

딱 우리가 제일 필요한 시점에요.

Now across all our sites, a small minority found a way to learn.

우리는 모든 산업 현장 중에

한 소수 집단이 배우는 방식을 알아냈습니다.

They did it by breaking and bending rules.

그들은 규칙을 무시하거나 왜곡하는 방식을 선택했지요.

Approved methods weren’t working, so they bent and broke rules

기존의 방법들을 통하지 않기 때문에

규칙들을 바꾸거나 무시해서 전문가들과 실습을 수행하였습니다.

to get hands-on practice with experts.

In my setting, residents got involved in robotic surgery in medical school

제 분야에서는

레지던트들이 의대에서 로봇 수술에 참여하며

at the expense of their generalist education.

대신 일반의 과정을 생략하거나

And they spent hundreds of extra hours with simulators and recordings of surgery,

추가적으로 수백시간을 들여서

녹화된 수술 영상을 시청하고 시뮬레이터를 활용하기도 하지요.

when you were supposed to learn in the OR.

원래는 수술실에서 배워야 함에도 불구하고요.

And maybe most importantly, they found ways to struggle

그리고 가장 인상적인 모습은

전문의의 지도가 아직 부족한 상태에서도 로봇 수술에 도전한다는 것이지요.

in live procedures with limited expert supervision.

I call all this “shadow learning,” because it bends the rules

저는 이 모두를 "그림자 학습"이라고 부릅니다.

이런 일들은 규칙 위반이며 몰래 이루어지기 때문이지요.

and learner’s do it out of the limelight.

And everyone turns a blind eye because it gets results.

그럼에도 불고하고 모두가 이런 일들을 다 눈감아 줍니다.

성과가 있기 때문이지요.

Remember, these are the star pupils of the bunch.

이들은 모두 재능이 있는 학생들입니다.

Now, obviously, this is not OK, and it’s not sustainable.

하지만 당연히 이는 옳지 못한 일이고 장기간 지속 될 수 없습니다.

No one should have to risk getting fired

그 누구도 해고당할 위협을 무릅쓰고

to learn the skills they need to do their job.

직업에 필요한 기술들을 배울 필요는 없습니다.

But we do need to learn from these people.

하지만 이들에게 배울 점은 있습니다.

They took serious risks to learn.

그들은 배움을 위해 큰 위험을 감수했습니다.

They understood they needed to protect struggle and challenge in their work

그들은 업무에 있어서 도전과 난관이 있어야만

so that they could push themselves to tackle hard problems

어려운 문제들을 해결해가는 과정에서

잠재력을 한계까지 끌어낼 수 있다는 것을 알았지요.

right near the edge of their capacity.

They also made sure there was an expert nearby

물론 그들도 항상 가까운 곳에 전문의가 있는 상태에서

to offer pointers and to backstop against catastrophe.

사고를 방지 할 수 대비책과 충고를 얻었습니다.

Let’s build this combination of struggle and expert support

이 도전과 전문가의 도움의 조합을

into each AI implementation.

인공지능이 활용되는 다른 분야에 적용해봅시다.

Here’s one clear example I could get of this on the ground.

지금 당장 제 머릿속에 떠오르는 이야기가 하나 있습니다.

Before robots,

로봇이 생기기 전에는

if you were a bomb disposal technician, you dealt with an IED by walking up to it.

만약 당신이 폭탄 제거 전문가였다면

직접 접근해야만 사제폭탄을 처리 할 수 있었습니다.

A junior officer was hundreds of feet away,

여러분의 후배는 몇 백 피트 떨어진 곳에서

so could only watch and help if you decided it was safe

and invited them downrange.

Now you sit side-by-side in a bomb-proof truck.

You both watched the video feed.

They control a distant robot, and you guide the work out loud.

후배가 직접 로봇을 원격 조종하고 여러분은 옆에서 지도만 할 수 도 있지요.

Trainees learn better than they did before robots.

이렇게 하면 로봇이 생기기 전보다 수습자들은 오히려 더 잘 배웁니다.

We can scale this to surgery, start-ups, policing,

이 방식은 수술, 창업, 치안유지,

investment banking, online education and beyond.

투자 은행 업무, 온라인 교육 등 다양한 분야에 적용 할 수 있습니다.

The good news is we’ve got new tools to do it.

게다가 우리는 이를 위한 새로운 도구들도 가지고 있지요.

The internet and the cloud mean we don’t always need one expert for every trainee,

인터넷과 클라우드 시스템 덕분에 한 명의 전문가가 여럿을 가르칠 수 있고

물리적으로 떨어져있거나 같은 단체에 있지 않아도 상관이 없지요.

for them to be physically near each other or even to be in the same organization.

And we can build AI to help:

게다가 이를 돕는 인공지능을 만들 수 도 있습니다.

to coach learners as they struggle, to coach experts as they coach

배우려는 학습자들을 도우면서 가르치려는 전문가들을 돕거나

and to connect those two groups in smart ways.

이 두 집단을 연결시켜주는 일을 효과적으로 할 수 있지요.

There are people at work on systems like this,

이미 이런 시스템을 현장에서 활용하는 곳도 있습니다.

but they’ve been mostly focused on formal training.

하지만 지금까지는 주로 형식적인 훈련에만 적용해왔지요.

And the deeper crisis is in on-the-job learning.

허나, 더 중요한 부분은 현장의 실무교육입니다.

We must do better.

우리는 더 나아져야 합니다.

Today’s problems demand we do better

오늘날의 문제들은 우리에게 더 나아질 것을 요구합니다.

to create work that takes full advantage of AI’s amazing capabilities

인공지능의 놀라운 가능성을 최대한 활용하면서

동시에 이 과정에서 우리의 실력도 키워 나가야 합니다.

while enhancing our skills as we do it.

That’s the kind of future I dreamed of as a kid.

이게 바로 제가 어렸을 때 꿈꿨던 미래였고

And the time to create it is now.

그 미래를 만들 시기가 바로 지금입니다.
