If you happened to be in the town of Lubec, Maine

you may have seen something a little curious on the horizon

The sign was 15 feet tall and 50 feet wide,

large enough so that on a clear day, you really could see "FOREVER,"

the word perfectly visible and legible in the distance.

But on some days,

a thick white fog would roll in off the ocean,

erasing the word and the view altogether.

And sometimes, like in this video,

you could barely see "FOREVER" peeking out of the shifting fog,

accompanied only by the rhythmic warning sounds of fog horns.

It started out as a fairly simple idea,

이것은 꽤 단순한 발상에서 시작되었습니다.

albeit a little strange,

to put the word "FOREVER" in the landscape

so it could appear and disappear in the fog.

But it took over a year to plan and execute,

and it required the help of so many people,

And the volunteers, who helped carry thousands of pounds of wood and steel

And in the end,

So if you're wondering why I did it at all,

as I often did during that process,

and my upbringing.

I grew up in an evangelical Christian family.

And although I'm an atheist today,

I've realized that my religious upbringing

has played a really important role in shaping the person that I've become.

In 1986, when I was five years old,

my parents became missionaries to South Africa.

And that was during the last few years of the apartheid,

so we lived in an all-white neighborhood,

and I attended an all-white public school,

Because I was so young,

I witnessed the racism and oppression of people of color I knew and loved

on a daily basis,

but because of my own skin color,

there was no way I could fully comprehend it.

But I had the privilege to experience, firsthand,

one of the most influential social movements of the 20th century.

And the thing that left a long-lasting impression on me

was how the people I met in South Africa

could envision a better future for themselves and their country.

A future they really believed was possible.

And then they worked together, relentlessly, for decades,

until they achieved that extraordinary historic change.

I was there to see Nelson Mandela released from prison,

and I watched an entire country begin a major transformation.

And that transformed me as a person.

I make sculptures like "FOREVER"

as a way of giving physical, tangible forms to language and time.

Those powerful but invisible forces

보이지 않지만 그런 강력한 힘들은

that shape the way we perceive and experience our realities.

And in doing so, I try to give other people the opportunity

그런 방식을 통해서, 저는 다른 사람들에게

to reflect on their own perception of reality

and inspire them to wonder and imagine

what else might be possible.

I often use signs to do this,

저는 이것을 이루기 위해 표지판들을 자주 이용해요.

because of how simply and effectively they're able to grab our attention

표지판들은 아주 간단하고 효과적으로 우리의 관심을 끌고,

정보와 메세지를 전달하기 때문입니다.

and communicate information.

They often point out things we would otherwise overlook,

표지판은 못 보고 넘어갈 수 있는 것들을 주목할 수 있게도 해줍니다.

like this sign on the side of the highway in Texas.

텍사스 고속도로 변에 있는 이 표지판처럼 말이죠.

[TEMPTATIONS]

[유혹]

우리가 전혀 볼수 없는 것들을 표지판에서는 보여줄 수 있습니다.

They can often signify things that we can't see at all,

like the distance to our destination.

예를 들어 목적지까지 남은 거리처럼 말이죠.

Signs often help to orient us in the world

표지판은 종종 세상에서 우리가 서 있는 위치를 알 수 있도록 도와줍니다.

[You are on an island]

[당신은 섬에 있습니다]

by telling us where we are now

우리가 지금 어디에 서 있는지,

and what's happening in the present moment,

현재 어떤 일이 일어나고 있는지 알려줍니다.

but they can also help us zoom out,

또한 우리가 좀 더 넓게 볼 수 있도록 도와 주기도 합니다.

shift our perspective

우리의 관점을 바꿔서,

and get a glimpse of the bigger picture.

더 큰 그림을 엿볼 수 있도록 말이죠.

Imagine, for example,

예를 들어,

you're walking down the street in Philadelphia.

여러분이 필라델피아의 거리를 걷고 있다고 상상해보세요.

A city in the US that contains so much history,

오랜 역사를 품고 있는 미국의 도시이자

the birthplace of our constitution.

헌법의 발상지이기도 하죠.

여러분이 걷고 있는 그 거리가

But imagine you're walking down the street

in an area that's undergoing a huge transformation

큰 변화를 겪고 있는 지역의 거리라고 상상해 보세요.

due to gentrification.

고급 주택화 개발 때문에 말이죠.

And as you walk down that street,

그 길을 따라 걷다가

you notice something flashing up above you.

머리 위로 무언가 깜박이는 걸 느끼고,

So you look up and you see this.

위를 쳐다 보니 이런 게 보였습니다.

A flashing neon sign that says

깜빡이는 네온 사인 표지판에 이렇게 써 있죠.

"All the light you see is from the past,"

"당신이 보는 모든 빛은 과거에서 온 것입니다,"

and then "All you see is past,"

그리고 "당신이 보는 모든 것은 과거입니다." 라는 문구가

before turning off completely for a brief moment.

네온사인은 완전히 꺼지기 전 잠시동안 보이죠.

It asks you to stop and notice

이 네온사인 문구는 여러분이 하던 일을 중지하고,

the history embedded in everything that you see.

보이는 모든 것에 내재된 역사를 바라보도록 합니다.

And it reminds you

that because light takes time to travel across space,

even from just across the street or across the room,

everything you're seeing in the present moment

is technically an image of the past.

Signs influence the way we all navigate the world,

표지판은 우리 모두가 세상을 탐험하는 방식에 영향을 줍니다.

which means they have the ability to create

이 말은 곧, 표지판이

a collective experience or understanding.

집단적 경험이나 공동의 이해를 가능하도록 한다는 것입니다.

My time in South Africa taught me

남아프리카에서 보냈던 시간들이 제게 가르쳐 준 것은,

that when people are able to find common ground

사람들은 공통된 견해를 찾아

and work together towards a mutual goal,

공동 목표를 향해 서로 협력하여 일할 때,

powerful things can happen and so much more becomes possible.

강력한 일들이 일어날 수 있으며, 더 많은 것들이 가능해진다는 것입니다.

And I want to create more opportunities

그래서 저는 더 많은 기회를 만들고 싶습니다.

for people to find that kind of common ground.

사람들이 이같은 공통된 의견을 찾아서,

I want people to feel the power of collaboration,

협동이 주는 힘을 느낄 수 있도록 말이죠.

sometimes quite literally.

때로는 글자 그대로 공동작업일 수도 있죠.

A few years ago,

몇 년 전에,

a friend of mine showed me

제 친구는

how our bodies can safely conduct small amounts of electricity.

우리 몸이 안전하게 소량의 전기를 전달할 수 있는 방법을 보여주었습니다.

And if you hold hands with another person,

다른 사람과 손을 잡고 있으면,

a small electrical current can pass through your held hands

잡고있는 손 사이로 소량의 전류가 통과할 수 있습니다.

and become like a switch that can trigger something else to happen.

그것은 스위치처럼 다른 일을 유발할 수 있습니다.

So last year, I used that form of human connection

to activate an inflatable sculpture.

I put two sensors on a platform far enough apart

so that one person can't make it work on their own.

But when two or more people work together

to complete that electrical circuit,

the inflatable comes to life.

And it begins to fill with air,

and the longer people hold hands, the larger it becomes,

expanding into the words "You are magic."

I always love to see

how each group of people finds a different way

to bridge that physical and metaphorical divide.

But as soon as they release their hands and break that connection,

the words immediately begin to slouch and fall over

and eventually return to a lifeless pile of fabric on the ground.

At this moment in time, I think we could all agree

that the future feels pretty bleak and uncertain.

But maybe the hope

그렇지만 어쩌면

for a brighter, more sustainable, more equitable future

더 밝고, 더 지속 가능하고, 더 공정한 미래를 꿈꾸는 희망은

depends first on our ability to imagine it.

우선 우리가 그것을 상상하는 능력에 달려있을지도 모릅니다.

But after we imagine it,

we actually have to believe it's possible.

And then we have to find common ground

with people we would maybe otherwise disagree with

and work together towards that mutual goal.

And if we do that, I believe we have the capacity for magic.

So if you can humor me for one more minute,

When was the last time you held hands with a stranger?

And if you feel comfortable,

go ahead and make that metaphorical gesture

of reaching across the aisle.

And after you've held hands with people on either side of you,

if you feel comfortable, please close your eyes.

Now take a minute to imagine what you want,

And give yourself permission to be at least a little bit idealistic.

What do you want to see change or happen in your own life as an individual?

What do you want to see change or happen for everyone, for the planet?

Can you picture it?

And can you start to see how, if we all worked together,

it might actually be possible?

Now open your eyes,
