In sub-Saharan Africa,

less than one in four young people are likely to get waged or salaried work.

The chances of making a secure living

are even slimmer for poor and rural young women.

They cannot afford an education.

And they do not have the same access to wages, loans or land

This leaves entire communities trapped

But I'm not here to narrate the doom and gloom,

because we also know that a youthful population

presents an opportunity to kick-start economic growth

and solve global challenges.

there is a growing movement in Africa, of educated young women,

who are stepping up and using the power of their network

and a tool we call social interest

to uplift communities.

I'm one of the leaders of the organization behind this movement.

And I have seen social interest multiply the impact of our work.

Social interest is a way to pay back interest on a loan

사회적 이자란 대출에 대한 이자를 돈이 아닌 도움으로 갚는 방식입니다.

through service, rather than dollars.

Sharing time and knowledge through mentoring,

멘토링을 통해, 시간과 지식을 나누고

academic support,

business training to others in need.

학업 지원 및 창업 훈련도 지원합니다.

This means the impact of a loan is felt not by one, but by many.

대출이 한 사람이 아닌 많은 이들에게 영향력을 발휘하는 거죠.

Through this system,

사회적 이자 시스템을 통해

we've been able to help and send more and more girls to school,

저희는 더 많은 소녀를 학교에 보내고

support them while they are there,

재학 기간 내내 그들을 지원합니다.

help them start businesses

또한 창업을 시작하게 도와줌으로써

and ultimately, lead in their communities --

all while providing funding for the next generation.

Social interest can be used

to supercharge any movement where the benefits can be paid forward.

Let me give you an example.

This is Stumai from rural Tanzania.

She tragically lost her father when she was just three years old.

Leaving a disabled mother to single-handedly raise her

and her five siblings.

Once Stumai completed primary school,

she was about to drop out of school

학교를 그만둬야 하는 상황이었고

and become one of the 92 percent of girls in sub-Saharan Africa

사하라 이남 아프리카에서 92%로의 소녀 중 한 명이 되어

that never finish high school.

고등학교를 졸업하지 못 할 뻔했지만

Instead, she got lucky.

스투마이는 운이 좋았습니다.

She got support from a nonprofit that paid her fees

비영리 단체에서 수업료를 지원해 줘

and kept her in school.

학업을 지속할 수 있었습니다.

But upon graduating high school,

그러나 고등학교 졸업을 앞두고

she faced a daunting challenge of what's next.

감당하기 힘든 다른 시련이 닥칩니다.

She knew she had to start her own business to survive.

그녀는 생존을 위해 자신의 사업을 시작해야 한다는 걸 깨닫게 되죠.

And to help her mother,

어머니도 도와야 했습니다.

who had tried so hard to keep her in school

어머니는 그녀가 학교에 다닐 수 있도록 헌신하셨거든요.

by selling her only assets,

유일한 재산을 팔면서까지 말이죠.

a stack of corrugated iron sheets she had been saving

어머니가 골강판을 모았던 건

in the hope of building a better home for her children.

자식들에게 보다 나은 집을 지어주고 싶었기 때문이었죠.

Stumai also knew she wouldn’t get a loan from a traditional bank,

스투미아는 일반 은행에서 대출을 받지 못할 걸 알고 있었죠.

which generally considers young, rural women like her,

일반적으로 이런 은행들은 젊은 지방 출신 여성들에 대해

without land or assets, unbankable.

토지나 재산이 없거나 무소득자로 간주하거든요.

Through a special group of lending partners,

대출 기관사들의 특정 계층 지원 프로그램을 통해

she secured 350 dollars to start a food shop,

스투마이는 식료품점을 차릴 350달러를 확보합니다.

selling vegetables, oil, rice, tomatoes, onions and beans.

채소, 식용유, 쌀 콩류 등을 파는 가게였죠.

Fellow network members helped to train her on basic business skills,

공동체 동료들은 그녀가 창업에 필요한 기본 지식을 습득하도록 도왔죠.

like creating a business plan,

가령, 사업 계획서 수립이라든가 순수익 계산, 마케팅,

working out profits, marketing,

keeping business records

경영 기록 관리나 저축의 중요성에 대해 말이죠.

and the value of savings.

And the business took off.

창업은 성공적이었고

She repaid the original loan within eight months,

8달 만에 대출받은 원금을 상환하고

and then borrowed 2,000 dollars

2천 달러를 다시 대출받았습니다.

to start a motorcycle taxi and courier business.

이번엔 이륜차 택시와 택배 사업에 도전하기 위해서였죠.

Stumai now owns two motorcycles

스투마이는 현재 이륜차 2대를 소유하고

and employs two people.

2명의 직원을 고용했습니다.

And she has been able to purchase land and build a house,

토지를 매입하고 집을 구매할 능력이 생겼고

and the business continues to grow

게다가 사업은 꾸준히 성장하여 점점 번창하고 있어요.

from strength to strength.

Stumai repaid her interest in social interest.

스투마이는 사회적 이자로 대출 이자를 갚았습니다

She paid social interest

지역 여고생들을 멘토링 함으로써 사회적 이자를 지불했습니다.

by providing mentoring to girls in a local high school.

She volunteered weekly as a learner guide,

매주 학습 도우미로서 자원봉사를 하면서

delivering a life skills and well-being curriculum

삶의 기술을 전수하고 탄탄한 커리큘럼을 통해

that helps children gain the confidence to ask questions,

학생들이 자신감을 갖고 질문할 수 있도록 유도하고

care for and support each other,

서로를 격려하고 지지하도록 했으며

learn about health and nutrition,

건강과 영양에 대해 배우게 했고

set goals and learn how to achieve them.

목표를 정한 후 성취하는 방법을 가르쳤습니다.

Stumai says her greatest reward is witnessing the girls she mentors

스투마이는 멘토링 하는 여학생들이 자기 확신과 성공에 대한 믿음을

start to believe in themselves and succeeding.

갖기 시작했을 때, 가장 보람을 느꼈다고 합니다.

These days, Stumai also trains other learner guides.

게다가 요즘 스투마이는 학습 도우미들을 교육 중입니다.

That's multiplying the number of girls making it through school

학교 졸업 후, 스투마이처럼 안정된 생활을 꾸리는 소녀들이 늘어났습니다.

and into secure livelihoods like she did.

Through her business profits, she has been able to support her siblings,

스투마이는 사업에서 얻은 수익으로 그녀의 형제자매뿐만 아니라

three nieces and nephews and other children in her community

세 명의 조카들과 지역 사회 아이들도 학교에 다니게끔 지원할 수 있었습니다.

to go to school.

She also regularly supports other network members.

또한, 공동체의 다른 회원들도 정기적으로 후원하고 있습니다.

For example,

a young woman studying for a diploma in community development.

In the past two years,

Stumai helped her with money for bus fare,

That's 17 percent of her gross earnings from her motorcycle business.

This is the power of social interest.

Stumai's example shows that if you help one girl,

스투미아의 사례를 통해

not only to go to school,

but graduate and start a business,

졸업하고 사업을 시작하게 되면

she can in turn make a giant difference

in the lives of others and her community.

Had Stumai paid back interest on her loan in dollars,

her success might have been felt by her and her immediate family,

but because she paid interest as social interest,

스투마이가 사회적 이자로 대출 이자를 갚았기 때문에

the impact was felt by her mentees,

her nieces, nephews, her employees

and so many others around her.

Stumai is just one example of many.

Today, we have 7,000 learner guides like Stumai,

현재 스투마이 같은 학습 도우미 7천 명이

working across Malawi,

말라위, 탄자니아, 가나, 잠비아, 짐바브웨 전역에서 활동하고 있으며

Tanzania, Ghana, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

And collectively,

they've helped children do better in school.

아이들이 학교 생활을 더 잘 할 수 있도록 돕고 있습니다.

The girls we work with are nearly three times less likely

to drop out of school,

because learner guides make home visits when girls fail to attend school

They also work with communities and district governments

to address the challenges children face,

including preventing or annulling child marriages,

connecting children facing hunger or hardship at home

with local support,

or running study groups

스터디 그룹을 운영함으로써

so that children who might be lagging behind in their studies

학업에 뒤처질 수 있는 아이들을 도와 학습을 따라잡게 합니다.

can get supporters and catch up.

They act as trusted sisters, friends and guardians.

학습 도우미들은 믿을 수 있는 언니, 친구, 보호자의 역할을 합니다.

So far, nearly 6,300 network members

현재까지 약 6천 3백 명의 회원들이 대출한 금액은 3백만 달러에 육박하지만

have borrowed close to three million dollars,

with a repayment rate of those loans at consistently above 95 percent.

대출 상환율은 계속해서 95%를 상회합니다.

And our 140,000 members,

우리 단체의 회원 14만 명은

they have invested their own resources

그들이 가지고 있는 자원을 투자해

to support and send

93만 7천 명이 넘는 아이들을 초등학교와 중학교에 보냈습니다.

over 937,000 children to primary and secondary school.

Every young woman we work with

supports, on average, another three children

outside of her immediate family

to go to school.

All without additional money from us.

We are building a powerful force.

Gaining ever greater momentum

이러한 추진력을 확보함으로써

점점 더 많은 소녀에게 학업의 문을 열어

as we open the door for more and more girls

to go to school,

succeed, lead and in turn, support thousands more.

그들이 성공한 리더가 되고 또 다른 수천 명을 돕도록 말이죠.

This system,

이 시스템을 통해

supporting those once excluded to transform their lives

한 때 교육받을 기회에서 배제된 이들을 지원해 그들의 삶을 변화시키고

and then step up for others,

그들이 다른 사람들을 도와줌으로써

can work for more than girls' education.

소녀들 교육 이상의 것을 성취할 수 있습니다.

Of course, you need to get your money back if you lend it.

물론, 돈을 빌려주면 돌려받는 게 맞는 거지만

But instead of demanding interest in dollars,

이자를 돈으로 요구하는 대신

can you consider using social interest instead?

사회적 이자로 갚도록 고려해 보는 건 어떨까요?

For example,

가령, 직업 전문대학을 나온 청년은 기술을 전수할 수 있겠죠?

could young people

pass on the skills they learned in training colleges?

Like Michelle,

미셸처럼 짐바브웨의 지방에서 벽돌 제조법을 가르칠 수도 있고

who teaches brickmaking in rural Zimbabwe.

Or Louisa,

루이자나처럼 말라위에서 기후 스마트 농업을 교육하거나

who is training others on climate-smart agriculture

in Malawi.

Or Fatima in Ghana,

가나의 파티마처럼

who is training women to help deliver babies

여성들에게 분만 교육을 하는 거죠.

where expectant mothers

제때 지역 병원에 갈 수 없는 임신부들을 도울 수 있게 말이죠.

might not be able to make it to the local hospital on time.

When I was growing up,

제가 어릴 적에

an elder in my village in rural Zimbabwe

짐바브웨 지방의 저희 동네 어르신 한 분이

once described the challenges I faced in going to school.

학교에 다니기 위해 제가 겪고 있는 난관을 이렇게 묘사하셨어요.

She said,

"호박 수확을 많이 한 애치고 요리용 토분이 있는 걸 못 봤어."

"Those who harvest many pumpkins

often do not have the clay pots to cook them in."

(Laughter)

(웃음)

What she meant was that,

그 말인 즉슨,

although I got the best possible results in my exams

제가 최고의 성적을 받아 초등학교를 마친다 한들,

when I finished elementary school,

my talent was of no value

집에서 계속 교육비를 못 댄다면 그 재능도 아무 쓸모가 없다는 거죠.

if my family could not afford to pay for me to continue my education.

Well, with this system,

하지만, 사회적 이자 시스템으론

we are not just providing pots,

달랑 토분만 주거나

or making a single meal out of the pumpkins.

호박으로 한 끼만 해결하는 게 아니죠.

After all,

어찌 되든 간 호박 한 개에 씨가 수백 개니,

there are hundreds of seeds in a single pumpkin.

We are saving the seeds,

씨를 모아서 심은 후,

planting them

하나하나 잘 키웁니다.

and nurturing every one of them.

And the result?

그리고 그 결과는요?

A virtuous cycle of prosperity,

번영, 평등, 희망의 순환이 실시간 일어나는 거죠.

equality and hope,

led by young women.

젊은 여성층에 의해서 말이죠.

Because together,

함께하기 때문에 세상을 개혁할 수 있는 겁니다.

we are shaking up the world.

Pamoja tunaweza --

"Pamoja tunaweza"

that's Swahili for my network motto: "Together we can!"
