And we do this because we actually believe

It's about the fastest and the most efficient

and the most dazzling gadget you can have,

સહુથી ભપકાદાર ઉપકરણ વિષે કામ કરતી જણાય છે,

while about two-thirds of the world

જ્યારે કે દુનિયાની બે તૃતિયાંશ વસ્તી,

can hardly reach the most basic of this technology

હજૂ આરોગ્ય સેવાઓ કે શિક્ષણ અને તેના જેવી અન્ય કેટલીય

to even address fundamental needs in life,

પાયાની જરૂરિયાતોમાટે પણ આ ટેક્નૉલૉજીના

including health care, education

પ્રાથમિક તબક્કાના ઉપયોગ સુધી

and all these kinds of very fundamental issues.

પણ પહોંચી નથી શકી.

So before I start, I want to talk about a little anecdote,

એટલે, શરૂ કરતાં પહેલાં હું તમને મને મુંબઇમાં એક વાર મળેલ

a little story about a man I met once in Mumbai.

એક ભાઇની નાનકડી વાત કહેવા માગું છું.

So this man, his name is Sathi Shri.

એ ભાઇનું નામ છે સતી શ્રી.

He is an outstanding person,

તે એક ખાસ માણસ એટલા માટે છે કે

because he's a small entrepreneur.

તે એક નાના વ્યવસાય-સાહસિક છે.

He runs a little shop

તે મુંબઇની નાની ગલીઓમાં

in one of the back streets of Mumbai.

એક દુકાન ચલાવે છે.

He has this little 10-square-meter store,

તેની એ ૧૦ ચોરસ મીટરની દુનિયામાં

where so much is being done.

તે બહુ બધું કરી રહ્યા છે.

માન્યામાં ન આવે. હું પણ જ્યારે તેમનિ અકસ્માત મળી ગયો

It's incredible, because I couldn't believe my eyes

when I once just happened to bump into him.

ત્યારે હું પણ નહોતો માની શક્યો.

Basically, what he does is, he has all these services

મૂળ મુદ્દે, તે બધાં જ પ્રકારનાં નાનાં ચુકવણાં અને ટિકિટ બુકિંગ

for micro-payments and booking tickets

જેવાં કામ કરે છે,

and all kinds of basic things that you would go online for,

જે આપણે સામાન્યતઃ ઑનલાઇન કરતાં હોઇએ છીએ.

but he does it for people offline

પણ તે લોકો સાથેના ઑફલાઇન વહેવારોને

and connects to the digital world.

More importantly, he makes his money

by selling these mobile recharge coupons, you know,

મૉબાઇલનાં આગોતરી ચુકવણીવાળી યોજનાનાં

for the prepaid subscriptions.

રી-ચાર્જ કુપન વેંચવામાંથી થાય છે.

But then, in the backside, he's got this little nook

પણ, પાછળની બાજૂએ એક નાનો ખૂણો છે,

with a few of his employees

જ્યાં તે તેના કર્મચારીઓ સાથે મળીને

where they can fix almost anything.

કંઇ પણ ઠીક કરી શકે છે.

Any cell phone, any gadget you can bring them, they can fix it.

કોઇ પણ સેલ ફૉન, કોઇ પણ સાધન આપો, તેને તેઓ ઠીક કરી આપશે.

And it's pretty incredible because I took my iPhone there,

and he was like, "Yeah, do you want an upgrade?"

I was a bit skeptical, but then, I decided

to give him a Nokia instead. (Laughter)

But what I was amazed about is this reverse engineering

પરંતુ મને વધારે આશ્ચર્ય હતું આ ઉંધાં એન્જીનીરિંગ વિષે

and know-how that's built into this little two meters of space.

અને આ બે મીટરની જગ્યામાં જે જાણકારી ભરી હતી તેનું.

They have figured out everything that's required

એ લોકોએ સાધનને ખોલી કાઢવા કે ભાગ છૂટા કરી નાખવા કે

to dismantle, take things apart,

સર્કીટ ફરીથી બનાવવી કે મૂળ સૉફ્ટવૅર ફરીથી ચડાવવા

rewrite the circuitry, re-flash the firmware,

જેવી કોઇ પણ વાત માટે તૈયારી કરી જ રાખેલી હોય,

do whatever you want to with the phone,

એટલે તમે તમારાં સાધનની કોઇ પણ વલે કરી હોય,

and they can fix anything so quickly.

તે લોકો તેને ઝડપથી ઠીક કરી આપે છે.

You can hand over a phone this morning

આજે સવારે તેમને ફૉન આપો

and you can go pick it up after lunch,

અને બપોરના જમવાના સમયે પાછો મેળવી લો.

and it was quite incredible.

માન્યામાં ન આવે તેવી વાત છે ને!

પરંતુ આપણે એ વિચારતા હતા કે શું આ કોઇ સ્થાનિક વાત છે કે

But then we were wondering whether this is

a local phenomenon, or is truly global?

પછી, ખરેખર બધે જ આમ બની રહ્યું છે?

And, over time, we started understanding

ધીમે ધીમે અમને સમજ પડવા લાગી અને

and systematically researching

અમે તેનું વ્યવસ્થિત સંશોધન કરવાનું શરૂ કર્યું,

what this tinkering ecosystem is about,

because that is something that's happening

not just in one street corner in Mumbai.

It's actually happening in all parts of the country.

It's even happening in Africa, like, for example,

in Cape Town we did extensive research on this.

આ વિષે મોટે પાયે સંશોધન કર્યું હતું.

Even here in Doha I found this little nook

મેં અહીં દોહામાં પણ એવા નાની જગ્યામાં

where you can get alarm clocks and watches fixed,

ઍલાર્મ ઘડીયાળો કે બીજાં ઘડિયાળો ઠીક કરાતાં જોયાં છે,

and it's a lot of tiny little parts. It's not easy.

જેમાં બહુ બધા ઝીણા પૂર્જાઓ હોય છે. એ કંઇ સહેલું નથી.

You've got to try it on your own to believe it.

તેને માનવા માટે તમારે કોઇ વાર જાત અનુભવ કરવો જોઇએ.

But what fuels this?

આ પ્રવૃતિને પીઠબળ શેનું છે?

It's this entire ecosystem of low-cost parts

લગભગ આખી દુનિયામાં બનતા,ઓછી કિમતે મળતા, પૂર્જાઓ અને

and supplies that are produced all over the world, literally,

તેનો પુરવઠો અને તેની આ ઉદ્યોગને જ ધ્યાનમાં રાખીને કરાતી ફેર-વેંચણીનું

and then redistributed to basically service this industry,

વ્યવસ્થાતંત્ર અને તેના ઉપરાંત રીપેર કરેલ પૂર્જાઓની સરળ ઉપલબ્ધી

and you can even buy salvaged parts.

Basically, you don't have to necessarily buy

brand new things. You have condemned computers

that are stripped apart,

and you can buy salvaged components

પાર્ટ્સનો મુખ્ય સ્ત્રોત છે,

and things that you can reassemble in a new configuration.

જેની મદદથી નવી રૂપરેખાની ગોઠવણીવાળાં સાધનો જોડી શકો છો.

But what does this new, sort of, approach give us?

આ નવા જેવા દેખાતા અભિગમથી આપણને શું મળે છે?

That's the real question, because this is something

આ ખરો સવાલ છે કારણકે

that's been there, part of every society

લગભગ દરેક સમાજમાં આ પ્રવૃતિને પૂરતાં સંસાધનોની

that's deprived of enough resources.

But there's an interesting paradigm.

આની સામે એક રસપ્રદ રુપક ઉદાહરણ છે.

There's the traditional crafts,

એક તરફ પરંપરાગત હુન્નરો છે,

and then there's the technology crafts.

તો બીજી તરફ ટેક્નોલૉજી હુન્નરો છે

We call it the technology crafts because these are emerging.

આ નવા વિકસતા હુન્નર છે એટલે આપણે તેમને ટેક્નોલોજી હુન્નર તરીકે ઓળખીશું.

They're not something that's been established.

એટલે કે, એ બધા પ્રસ્થાપિત હુન્નરો નથી

It's not something that's institutionalized.

એ બધા હજૂ સંસ્થાગત માળખાંમાં ગોઠવાયા નથી.

It's not taught in universities.

કે નથી તે કોઇ યુનિવર્સિટીમાં શીખવાડાતા.

It's taught [by] word of mouth,

તેનું શિક્ષણ તો બિનઔપચારિક, મોઢા મોઢ,

and it's an informal education system around this.

શિક્ષણ તંત્રથી શીખવાડાય છે.

So we said, "What can we get out of this?

આપણો સવાલ હતો, "આપણે એમાંથી શું મેળવી શકીએ?

You know, like, what are the key values that we can get out of this?"

જેમ કે, એમાંથી શું મહત્વનાં મૂલ્યો મેળવી શકીએ?

The main thing is a fix-it-locally culture,

મુખ્ય ફાયદો છે સ્થાનિક કક્ષાએ જ મરમ્મતની સંસ્કૃતિ,

which is fantastic because it means that your product

જે બહુ મોટી વાત છે, કારણકે તમારી વસ્તુ કે સેવાએ રીપેર થવામાટે

or your service doesn't have to go through

a huge bureaucratic system to get it fixed.

It also affords us cheap fabrication, which is fantastic,

so it means that you can do a lot more with it.

And then, the most important thing is,

it gives us large math for low cost.

So it means that you can actually embed

pretty clever algorithms and lots of other kinds

of extendable ideas into really simple devices.

So, what we call this is a silicon cottage industry.

આપણે એને સિલિકોન કુટિર ઉદ્યોગ કહીશું?

It's basically what was the system or the paradigm

મૂળ મુદ્દે ઔદ્યિગિક ક્રાંતિ પહેલાં જે તંત્ર કે વ્યવસ્થા હતાં તે

before the industrial revolution is now re-happening

નવી જ ઢબથી, આખી દુનિયાના વિકસતા દેશોમાં ફેલાયેલી

in a whole new way in small digital shops

નાની ડીજીટલ દુકાનોમાં

across the planet in most developing countries.

ફરીથી આકાર લઇ રહી છે.

So, we kind of toyed around with this idea,

આમ આ વિચારને મમળાવતાં મમળાવતાં

and we said, "What can we do with this?

પૂછીએ કે "આપણે આનું શું કરી શકીએ?"

Can we make a little product or a service out of it?"

આપણે તેમાંથી કોઇ નાની પ્રૉડ્ક્ટ કે સેવા બનાવી શકીએ ખરા?

એટલે સહુથી પહેલું કામ તો જેને આપણે વિવિધમાધ્યમ મંચ કહી શકાય

So one of the first things we did is this thing called

a multimedia platform. We call it a lunch box.

તે બનાવ્યું તેને આપણે 'જમવાનો ડબ્બા'તરીકે ઓળખીશું.

Basically one of the contexts that we studied was

અમે ખાસ તો જે સંદર્ભનો અભ્યાસ કર્યો તે હતો ભારતના

schools in very remote parts of India.

બહુ જ અંતરિયાળ ભાગમાં આવેલી શાળાઓમાં.

So there is this amazing concept called the one-teacher school,

આ અદ્ભુત વિચાર એક-શિક્ષક-શાળાને લગતો છે,

which is basically a single teacher who is a multitasker

જેના પાયામાં છે એક શિક્ષક છે જે આ ટચુકડી શાળાના ઢાંચામાં

who teaches this amazing little social setting.

ભણાવવા સાથે સાથે બહુવિધ કાર્યો કરે છે.

It's an informal school,

એ છે અનૌપચારિક શાળા, પણ ખરા અર્થમાં

but it's really about holistic education.

સાકલ્યવાદી શિક્ષણ.

The only thing that they don't have

તેમની પાસે નથી માત્ર પૂરતાં સંસાધનો.

is access to resources. They don't even have a textbook

ક્યારેક તેમની પાસે નથી પાઠ્ય પુસ્તકો

sometimes, and they don't even have a proper curriculum.

કે નથી ક્યારેક વ્યવસ્થિત પાઠ્યક્રમ.

So we said, "What can we do to empower this teacher

આપણો સવાલ એ છે કે" આ શિક્ષકને વધારે સામર્થ્યવાન કરવા માટે

to do more?" How to access the digital world?

આપણે શું કરી શકીએ?" તેને ડીજીટલ જગતના સંપર્કમાં શી રીતે લાવી શકીએ?

Instead of being the sole guardian of information,

માહિતિના એકાધિકાર રક્ષક બની રહેવાને બદલે

be a facilitator to all this information.

આ બધી માહિતિના સુવિધાસંવાહક બની રહે.

So we said, "What are the steps required to empower the teacher?"

"શિક્ષકને સામર્થ્યવાન બનાવવા શું શું કરવું જોઇએ?"

How do you make this teacher into a digital gateway,

શિક્ષકને ડીજીટલ વિશ્વમાં પ્રવેશ કેમ કરાવડાવવો અને

and how do you design an inexpensive multimedia platform

ઓછાં ખર્ચનાં માધ્યમ-વૈવિધ્યના મચ કઇ રીતે ડીઝાઇન કરવા અને

that can be constructed locally and serviced locally?"

સ્થાનિક કક્ષાએ બનાવવા અને તેને લગતી સેવાઓ પૂરી પાડવી?"

So we walked around.

એટલે ચારે બાજૂ તપાસ કરી.

We went and scavenged the nearby markets,

આજૂબાજૂનાં બજારોને ઉપરતળે કરી કાઢ્યાં,

and we tried to understand, "What can we pick up that will make this happen?"

જેથી સમજી શકાય કે "આ બધું શક્ય બનાવવા શું કરી શકાય?"

So the thing that we got

એમાં જોવા મળ્યો

was a little mobile phone with a little pico projector

એક બહુ નાનાં ચિત્રપટ પાડી શકે તેવો એક મૉબાઇલ ફૉન

that comes for about 60 dollars.

જે લગભગ ૬૦ ડૉલરમાં મળી રહે.

We went a bought a flashlight with a very big battery,

એક મોટી બૅટરી સાથેની વીજળીક હાથબત્તી,

and a bunch of small speakers.

અને થોડાં નાનાં લાઉડસ્પીકર્સ.

So essentially, the mobile phone gives us

આમ આ મૉબાઇલ ફૉન એ વિશ્વ સાથે જોડાયેલું

a connected multimedia platform.

માધ્યમ-વૈવિધ્ય મંચ બની ગયો.

It allows us to get online and allows us to load up files

જેની મદદથી ઑનલાઇન જોડાણ કરીને જૂદા જૂદા પ્રકારની ફાઇલ

of different formats and play them.

લાવીને તેને જોઇ શકાય એવું શક્ય બની શક્યું.

The flashlight gives us this really intense, bright L.E.D.,

વીજળીક હાથબત્તી આપણને ખાસ્સો તિવ્ર અને તેજસ્વી એલ.ઇ.ડી.પ્રકાશ પૂરો પાડે

and six hours worth of rechargeable battery pack,

જે છએક કલાક ચાલી શકે તેટલી બૅટરીસાથે સજ્જ છે.

and the lunch box is a nice little package

આમ 'જમવાના ડબ્બા'માં બધું,

in which you can put everything inside,

ખાસી એવી મોટી માત્રામાં સાભળી શકાય

and a bunch of mini speakers to sort of

તેવાં નાનાં લાઉડસ્પીકર સાથે,

amplify the sound large enough.

બરાબર ગોઠવી શકાય.

Believe me, those little classrooms are really noisy.

એ બધા વર્ગખંડો માન્યામાં ન આવે તેટલા ઘોંઘાટીયા હોય છે.

They are kids who scream at the top of their voices,

બાળકો તેમના અવાજની ચરમ સીમાએ ચીસો પાડતાં હોય,

and you really have to get above that.

તેનાથી ઉપરવટ આપણે જવું પડે.

And we took it back to this little tinkering setup

આપણાં બનાવેલાં એ તેર-સાંધાવાળાં સાધનને લઇને

of a mobile phone repair shop,

એ મૉબાઇલ ફોન રીપેર કરતી દુકાન પર લઇ જાઇએ

and then the magic happens.

અને તેનાપર જોતજોતામાં થતો જાદુ જોઇએ.

We dismantle the whole thing,

તેઓ આખાંને ફરીથી છૂટું પાડી નાખે છે,

we reassemble it in a new configuration,

ફરીથી નવી બાંધણી મુજબ એકઠું કરે છે,

and we do this hardware mashup,

અને એ રીતે આ કામ કરનરાઓને

systematically training the guy how to do this.

આ હાર્ડવૅરમાટે તાલિમ મળતી જાય છે.

Out comes this, a little lunch box -- form factor.

અને પરિણમે છે આ નાનો જમવાનો ડબ્બો - એક નવા અવતારમાં.

And we systematically field tested,

because in the field testing we learned some

important lessons, and we went through many iterations.

One of the key issues was battery consumption and charging.

Luminosity was an issue, when you have too much bright sunlight outside.

બહાર જ્યારે બહુ વધારે સૂર્યપ્રકાશ હોય ત્યારે,તેનો પ્રકાશ પણ એક સમસ્યા જણાતી હતી.

Often the roofs are broken, so you don't have enough

મોટા ભાગે, છાપરાં તૂટેલાં હોય, એટલે આ બધું કરવા માટે જરુરી અંધારૂં

darkness in the classroom to do these things.

વર્ગખંડમાં ઉભું નથી કરી શકાતું.

We extended this idea. We tested it many times over,

આ વિચારને થોડો વધારે વિસ્તારીને પછીથી ફરી ફરીને ઘણી કસોટીઓ કરી,

and the next version we came up with was a box

જેમાંથી એ ડબ્બાનું જે નવું સંસ્કરણ બન્યું, તે થોડું ઘણું તો

that kind of could trickle charge on solar energy,

સૂર્ય ઊર્જાથી રી-ચાર્જ થવાનું શક્ય બન્યું,

but most importantly connect to a car battery,

પણ વધારે મહત્વનું એ થયું કે તેને કારની બૅટરીજોડે જોડવું શક્ય હતું,

because a car battery is a ubiquitous source of power

કારણકે કારની બૅટરી તો બધે જ ઉપલબ્ધ હોય તેવો ઉર્જા સ્રોત છે

in places where there's not enough electricity

જ્યાં પૂરતા પ્રમાણમાં વીજળી ન હોય, અથવા તો હોય તો

or erratic electricity.

ઢંગધડા વિનાની હોય.

And the other key thing that we did was

અને બીજું એક મહત્વનું કામ અમે એ કર્યું કે

make this box run off a USB key, because we realized

આ ડબ્બાને યુએસબી ચાવી વડે ચાલતો કર્યો, કારણ કે હવે સમજાઇ ગયું હતું કે

that even though there was GPRS and all that on paper,

કાગળ ઉપર જીપીઆરેસ હોત તો પણ,

at least, in theory, it was much more efficient

કમ સે કમ, સૈધ્ધાંતિક રીતે, નાની સી USB ચાવીની મદદથી

to send the data on a little USB key by surface mail.

સતહ ટપાલ વડે માહિતિ મોકલવી વધારે કાર્યક્ષમ છે.

It might take a few days to get there,

તે પહોંચવામાં થોડો સમય જરૂર લાગે,

but at least it gets there in high definition

પણ તે ત્યાં ઘણી ઉંચી સ્પષ્ટતાની અને

and in a reliable quality.

મદાર રાખી શકાય તેવી ગુણવત્તા કક્ષાએ પહોંચે.

So we made this box, and we tested it again

આ રીતે અમે ડબ્બો બનાવ્યો અને ફરી ફરીને તેના પ્રયોગ કર્યા

and again and again, and we're going through

અને હાલમાં તેનાં વિવિધ સ્વરૂપના

multiple iterations to do these things.

But it's not limited to just education.

પણ તેનો ઉપયોગ માત્ર શિક્ષણ પૂરતો મર્યાદીત નથી.

This kind of a technique or metrology

can actually be applied to other kinds of areas,

ઉપયોગ બીજાં ઘણાં ક્ષેત્રમાં શકય છે,

and I'm going to tell you one more little story.

It's about this little device called a medi-meter.

મૅડી-મીટર, વિષે એક વાત કહેવી પડશે.

It's basically a little health care screening tool that we developed.

આમ તો એ આરોગ્ય સેવામાં વાપરવામાટે અમે વિકસાવેલું એક સાધન છે.

In India, there is a context of these amazing people,

ભારતમાં, આરોગય સેવાનાં ક્ષેત્રમાં કામ કરતા કર્મચારીઓનો

એક બહુ જ આશ્ચર્યજનક વર્ગ છે, જે આશા કર્મચારીઓ તરીકે જાણીતા છે.

the health care workers called ASHA workers.

They are essentially foot soldiers for the health care system

તેઓ ખરી રીતે તો આરોગ્ય સેવામાં પગે ફરતા રહેતા કર્મચારીઓ છે

who live in the local community and are trained

જેઓ સ્થાનિક સમુદાયમાં રહેતાં હોય છે અને તેઓને આરોગ્ય સેવાઓ માટે

with basic tools and basic concepts of health care,

જરૂરી સાધનો અને મૂળ ભૂત સિધ્ધાંતો બાબતે પ્રશિક્ષણ અપાયું હોય છે

and the main purpose is basically to inform people

જેનો મૂળ આશય લોકોને સારી રીતે કેમ જીવવું તે અંગે

to basically, how to lead a better life, but also

જાણ કરવાનો હોય છે, પરંતુ તે સાથે

to divert or sort of make recommendations

લોકોએ આરોગ્યની સંભાળ બાબતે ક્યા પ્રકારના

of what kind of health care should they approach?

અભિગમ કેળવવા જોઇએ તે અંગે સુચનો પણ કરે છે.

આમ, સામાન્ય અર્થમાં તેઓ લોકોને આરોગ્ય

They are basically referral services, essentially.

તજજ્ઞો પાસે પછીની કક્ષાની સારવાર માટે મોકલે છે.

But the problem with that is that we realized

પરંતુ થોડાં સંશોધનને પરિણામે જાણવા મળ્યું કે

after a bunch of research that they are amazing

આ લોકો તજજ્ઞોપાસે, નજદીકનાં દવાખાનાંમાં,

at referring people to the nearest clinic

કે નજીકનાં આરોગ્ય સેવા કેન્દ્રમાં

or the public health care system, but what happens at the

મોકલાવાનું કામ તો ઘણું સારી રીતે કરે છે, પરંતુ ત્યાં ગયા પછી

public health care system is this: these incredibly long lines

ત્યાં લોકોએ લાંબી પ્રતિક્ષા યાદીમાં રાહ જોવી પડે છે

and too many people who overload the system

અને તેને કારણે ત્યાં લોકોની ભીડ પણ બહુ વધી જાય છે,

simply because there's not enough doctors and facilities

કારણકે ત્યાં આટલાં મોકલાતાં લોકોને પહોંચી વળે તેટલા ડૉક્ટર્સ કે

for the population that's being referred.

સુવિધાઓ નથી હોતી.

So everything from a common cold

એટલે થાય એવું કે સામાન્ય શરદીથી

to a serious case of malaria gets almost the same

ગંભીર મૅલૅરીયાને લગભગ એક સરખું જ મહત્વ મળે

level of attention, and there's no priorities.

પણ કદાચ, કોઇ જ પ્રાથમિકતા જેવું જોવા ન મળે.

So we said, "Come on, there's got to be a better way

એટલે એવો વિચાર આવ્યો કે "આનાથી વધારે સારી રીતે કામ કરવાનો

of doing this for sure."

કોઇ વિકલ્પ તો જરૂર હોવો જોઇએ."

So we said, "What can we do with the ASHA worker

એટલે આશા કર્મચારીને કઇ રીતે મદદરૂપ થઇ શકીએ

that'll allow this ASHA worker to become an interesting filter,

જેથી તે એક અસરકારક ગરણું બની રહે

but not just a filter, a really well thought through referral

કે જેના વડે આ તજજ્ઞ ડૉક્ટરની પાસે મોકલવાની પ્રક્રિયા

system that allows load balancing of the network,

સમગ્ર તંત્રપરનાં ભારણને આપસમજથી સંતુલિત રાખે

and directs patients to different sources of health care

અને દર્દીઓને તેમની તકલીફની ગંભીરતા કે કટોકટીના આધારે

based on the severity or the criticalness of those situations?"

આરોગ્ય સેવાઓના જૂદા જૂદા સ્ત્રોત ભણી દોરે?"

So the real key question was,

આમ, મહત્વનો સવાલ એ બની રહે છે કે

how do we empower this woman?

આ બહેનોને આપણે કેમ સામર્થ્યવાન કરી શકીએ?

How do we empower her with simple tools

આપણે કઇ રીતે તેમને એવાં સાદાં સાધનો આપીએ જે

that's not diagnostic but more screening in nature

રોગ નિદાન ભલે ન કરી આપે પણ તેમને વર્ગીકરણમાં મદદરૂપ થાય

so she at least knows how to advise the patients better?

જેથી તેમને કમસે કમ દર્દીઓને શું સલાહ આપવી તે ખબર પડે?

And that'll make such a huge difference on the system,

તેમ જ સમગ્ર તંત્ર ઉપર પણ તેનાથી એટલો વધારે ફરક પડે કે

because the amount of waiting time and the amount of

જેને કારણે, એક સામાન્ય દાકતરી તપાસ માટે પણ રાહ જોવાનો સમય

distances that people need to travel, often sometimes

અને કોઇવાર સાતથી પંદર કિલોમીટર જેટલું લોકોને જે ચાલવું પડે છે

seven to 15 kilometers, sometimes by foot,

કે મુસાફરી કરવી પડે છે તે દૂર કરી શકાય,

to get a simple health check done, is very, very detrimental

જે અન્યથા એટલું બધું નુકશાનકારક છે

in the sense that it really dissuades people

કે લોકોને આરોગ્ય સેવાઓનો લાભ લેવામાં જ

from getting access to health care.

રસ ન રહે.

So if there was something that she could do,

આ વિષય બાબતે એ બહેનો કંઇ યોગદાન આપી શકે તો

that would be amazing.

તે આશ્ચર્યજનક પરીણામો લાવી શકે.

So what we did was that we converted this device

એટલે અમે આ સાધનને એક

into a medical device.

મેડીકલ ઉપકરણમાં બદલી કાઢયું.

I want to demo this actually,

જૂઓ હું તેનો ઉપયોગ કરીને બતાવું,

because it's a very simple process.

જે આમ તો બહુ સરળ છે.

So the thing about this is that

એટલે વાત જાણે એમ છે કે

if the pointer, unfortunately, had pointed to the red spot,

we would have to rush you to a hospital.

તો તમને હૉસ્પિટલમાં દાખલ કરવા પડ્યા હોત.

Luckily, not today. And if it had pointed to the orange

or the amber, it basically meant you had to have,

અટક્યો હોત, તો એનો અર્થ એ થાત કે તમારે, લગભગ,

sort of, more continuous care from the health care worker.

આરોગ્ય કર્મચારીની સેવામાં વધારે સતત રહેવું પડત.

So that was a very simple three-step screening process

આમ આ ત્રણ -પગલાંની એક સરળ વર્ગીકરણ પ્રક્રિયા થઇ

that could basically change the equation

જે મૂળભૂત રીતે જાહેર આરોગ્ય સેવા અલગ અલગ ક્ષેત્રમાં

of how public health care works in so many different ways.

કઇ રીતે કામ કરશે તેનાં સમીકરણો જ બદલી નાખશે.

So, very briefly, I'll just explain to you how this is done,

હવે હું તમને આ શી રીતે કામ કરે છે તે ટુંકમાં સમજાવું,

because that's the more interesting part.

So essentially, the three things that are required

મુળ મુદ્દે, આ ભાઇથી પેલા ભાઇમાં બદલવા માટે

to make this conversion from this guy to this guy

ત્રણ વસ્તુની જરૂર પડે, જે છે

is a cheap remote control for a television

ટેલીવીઝન માટેનું એક સસ્તું રીમોટ કન્ટ્રોલ,

that you can almost find in every home today,

જે આજકાલ દરેક ઘરમાં સહેલાઇથી મળી રહે છે,

some parts from a computer mouse, basically,

કમ્પ્યુટરના માઉસના કેટલાક ભાગ,

something that you can scavenge for very low cost,

જે બહુ સામાન્ય ખર્ચમાં જૂના માઉસમાંથી કાઢી લઇ શકાય છે,

and a few parts that have to be pre-programmed.

અને પહેલેથી પ્રોગ્રામ થ ઇ શકે તેવા કેટલાક ભાગ.

Basically this is a micro-controller with a few

મુળભૂત રીતે આ થોડા વધારાના ભાગ સાથેનું એક માઇક્રૉ-કંન્ટ્રોલર છે

extra components that can be shipped for very little cost

જેને વિશ્વના કોઇ પણ ભાગમાં બહુ ઓછા ખર્ચામાં

across the world, and that's what is all required

મોકલી શકાય છે. બસ આટલી વસ્તુઓની જરૂરત છે

with a little bit of local tinkering talent

જેને થોડી સ્થાનિક ચપળ કારીગીરીની મદદથી આ સાધનને કશા

to convert the device into something else.

અન્ય ઉપયોગમાં લઇ શકાય તેવાં સાધનમાં ફેરવી શકાય છે.

So we are right now doing some systematic field tests

અત્યારે આ બાબતના સ્થળ પરના કસોટી પ્રયોગો ચાલી રહ્યા છે

to basically ascertain whether something like this actually

જેના વડે એ નક્કી કરી શકાય કે આ પ્રકારની કોઇ વ્યવસ્થા

makes sense to the ASHA worker.

આશા કાર્યકરને મદદરૂપ થઇ શકશે કે કેમ.

We are going through some reference tests to compare it

તેજ રીતે કેટલાંક પ્રોફેશનલ સાધનોની સરખામણીમાં

against professional equipment to see if there's a degree

પ્રયોગો ચાલી રહ્યા છે જેનાથી નક્કી થઇ શકે આ સાધનોના ઉપયોગને કારણે

અસરકારકતા પર કોઇ ફરક પડે છે તેમ જ શું ખરેખર લોકોનાં જીવન પર તેની

of change in efficacy and if it actually makes an impact

in people's lives. But most importantly,

કોઇ અસર થાય છે કે કેમ. તદુપરાંત,આપણે વધારે

મહત્વનું તો એ કામ કરી રહ્યા છીએ જે આ પ્રયોગને વધારે

what we are trying to do right now

is we are trying to scale this up, because there

વ્યાપક સ્તરે પહોંચાડે કારણકે આશરે ૨૫૦,૦૦૦થી પણ વધારે

are over 250,000 ASHA workers on the ground

પગે ચાલીને કામ કરતા અદ્ભૂત આશા કાર્યકરો કામ કરી રહ્યાં છે

who are these amazing foot soldiers, and if we can

જેમાંથી આપણે એક નાના સમુહને પણ આ સાધન પહોંચાડવાનાં

give at least a fraction of them the access to these things,

રહે છે જેને કારણે જાહેર આરોગ્ય સેવાનાં અર્થકારણમાં

it just changes the way the economics of public health care

ધરખમ ફેરફાર શક્ય બનતા જોઇ શકાય છે તેમ જ

works, and it changes the way systems actually function,

તેનાથી સમગ્ર તંત્રની કાર્યપ્ધ્ધતિ પણ બદલી શકવાની શક્યતાઓ રહેલી છે,

not just on a systematic planning level,

માત્ર વ્યવસ્થિત આયોજનનાં સ્તરે જ નહીં,

but also in a very grassroots, bottom-up level.

પણ નીચેથી ઉપર સુધીનાં પાયાનાં સ્તરે પણ.

So that's it, and we hope to do this in a big way.
