So, welcome to the Golden Desert, Indian desert.

It receives the least rainfall in the country,

lowest rainfall.

If you are well-versed with inches, nine inches,

The groundwater is 300 feet deep, 100 meters.

There are a number of techniques to harvest rain.

This is a new work, it's a new program.

But for the desert society

this is no program; this is their life.

You can notice the small holes

Sometimes our engineers and architects

The waterproofing is done perfectly,

They collect 100 thousand liters in one season.

And this is pure drinking water.

Below the surface there is hard saline water.

But now you can have this for year round.

It's two houses.

We often use a term called bylaws.

Because we are used to get written things.

These raised up platforms just like this stage.

In fact they go 15 feet deep,

and collect rain water from roof,

there is a small pipe, and from their courtyard.

It can also harvest something like 25,000 in a good monsoon.

Another big one,

this is of course out of the hardcore desert area.

And it can collect six million gallons of rainwater in one season.

So, since 400 years it has been giving you

You can calculate the price of that water.

It draws water from 15 kilometers of canals.

You can see a modern road, hardly 50 years old.

It can break sometimes.

But this 400 year old canal, which draws water,

it is maintained for so many generations.

Of course if you want to go inside, the two doors are locked.

because it comes from the clouds,

The government thought that this is a very

In many portions, water hyacinth

covered these big canals like anything.

Of course there are some areas where water is reaching,

જરૂર એવા ઘણા વિસ્તારો છે, જેમાં પાણી પહોચી રહ્યું છે.

I'm not saying that it is not reaching at all.

હું નથી કહેતો કે એ જરાય પહોંચી નથી રહ્યું.

But the tail end, the Jaisalmer area,

પણ પૂંછડીનો છેડો, જેસલમેર વિસ્તાર,

you will notice in Bikaner things like this:

તમે નોંધી શકશો આવી વસ્તુઓ બિકાનેરમાં:

where the water hyacinth couldn't grow,

જ્યાં જલ્કુમ્ભી ઉગી નથી શકતી

the sand is flowing in these canals.

આ નહેરમાં ધૂળ વહી રહી છે.

The bonus is that you can find wildlife around it.

બોનસ એ છે કે તમે ત્યાં તેની આજુ બાજુ માં વન્ય જીવન પણ જોઈ શકો છો.

We had full-page advertisements,

એક આખા પન્નાનું વિજ્ઞાપન આપવામાં આવ્યું હતું,

some 30 years, 25 years ago when this canal came.

કોઈ ૩૦ - ૨૫ વર્ષો પહેલા જયારે આ નહેર આવી,

They said that throw away your traditional systems,

તેઓએ કીધું કે તમારી પારંપરિક વ્યવસ્થાને ફેંકી દો,

these new cement tanks will supply you piped water.

આ નવી સિમેન્ટની ટેન્કો તમને પાઈપનું પાણી પૂરી આપશે,

It's a dream. And it became a dream also.

આ એક સપનું છે. અને તે એક સપનું જ બની ગયું.

Because soon the water was not able to reach these areas.

કારણકે તરત જ પાણી આ વિસ્તારમાં પહોચતુ બંધ થયુ.

And people started renovating their own structures.

અને લોકોએ તેઓના પોતાના ગૃહો સુધારવાનું શરુ કરી દીધું.

These are all traditional water structures,

આ બધા પારંપરિક જળગૃહો છે,

which we won't be able to explain in such a short time.

જેઓને અમે આટલા ટૂંકા સમયમાં સમઝાવી નહિ શકીએ.

But you can see that no woman is standing on those.

And they are plaiting hair.

Jaisalmer. This is heart of desert.

જેસલમેર. આ છે રણનું દિલ.

This town was established 800 years ago.

આ શહેરની સ્થાપના ૮૦૦ વર્ષો પહેલા થયી હતી.

I'm not sure by that time

હું સુનિશ્ચિત નથી કે એ સમયે,

Bombay was there, or Delhi was there,

બોમ્બે અને દિલ્હી હતું કે નહિ,

or Chennai was there, or Bangalore was there.

So, this was the terminal point for silk route.

Well connected, 800 years ago, through Europe.

None of us were able to go to Europe,

but Jaisalmer was well connected to it.

And this is the 16 centimeter area.

Such a limited rainfall,

and highest colorful life flourished in these areas.

You won't find water in this slide.

But it is invisible.

Somewhere a stream or a rivulet

is running through here.

Or, if you want to paint, you can paint it blue throughout

because every roof which you see in this picture

But apart from this system,

they designed 52 beautiful water bodies around this town.

And what we call private public partnership

you can add estate also.

work together to build this beautiful water body.

And it's a kind of water body for all seasons.

અને આ એક પ્રકારનું સર્વ ઋતુ માટેનું જળ ગૃહ છે.

You will admire it. Just behold the beauty throughout the year.

Whether water level goes up or down,

પાણીનું સ્તર નીચે જાય કે ઉપર.

the beauty is there throughout.

Another water body, dried up, of course,

બીજું જળ ગૃહ જે (હમણાં) જરૂર સુકાઈ ગયું છે,

during the summer period,

ઉનાળાના સમયગાળામાં,

but you can see how the traditional society

પરંતુ તમે જોઈ શકો છે કે કઈ રીતે પારંપરિક સમાજ

combines engineering with aesthetics, with the heart.

દિલથી ઈજનેરીને સૌન્દર્યશાસ્ત્ર સાથે જોડે છે.

These statues, marvelous statues,

આ પ્રતિમાઓ, અનોખી પ્રતિમાઓ,

gives you an idea of water table.

પાણીના સ્તરની જાણકારી આપે છે.

When this rain comes and the water starts filling this tank,

જયારે વરસાદનું પાણી આવે છે અને પાણી ટાંકીને ભરવાનું ચાલુ કરે છે,

it will submerge these beautiful statues

તે આ પ્રતિમાઓને ડુબાવી દે છે,

in what we call in English today "mass communication."

જે ને આપણે અંગ્રેજીમાં કહીએ છીએ "સાર્વજનિક સંચાર"

This was for mass communication.

Everybody in the town will know that this elephant has drowned,

so water will be there for seven months or nine months,

And then they will come and worship this pond,

Another small water body, called the [unclear].

It is difficult to translate in English,

In severe drought periods

nobody has seen this water body

કોઈએ પણ આ જળ ગૃહએ

getting dried up.

સુકાઈ જતા જોયું નથી.

And perhaps they knew the future also.

અને કદાચ તેઓ ભવિષ્ય વિષે જાણતા હતા.

It was designed some 150 years ago.

આની રચના ૧૫૦ વર્ષો પહેલા થઈ હતી.

But perhaps they knew that on sixth, November, 2009,

Dry water body. Children are standing on

સુખાયેલું જળ ગૃહ. બાળકો જેના ઉપર ઉભા છે,

a very difficult device to explain.

તે સાધનને સમજાવવુ ઘણું મૂશ્કેલ છે.

This is called kund. We have, in English, surface water and ground water.

આને કુંડ કહેવાય છે. આપણે જાણીએ છીએ,અંગ્રેજી માં, સ્તર પરનું પાણી અને ભૂગર્ભીય પાણી,

But this is not ground water.

પણ આ ભૂગર્ભીય પાણી નથી.

You can draw ground water from any well.

તમે ભૂગર્ભીય પાણીને કોઈ પણ કૂવા માંથી કાઢી શકો છો.

But this is no ordinary well.

પણ આ કોઈ સામાન્ય કૂવો નથી.

It squeeze the moisture

તે ભેજને શોષે છે

hidden in the sand.

જે માટીમાં છૂપાયેલું હોય છે.

And they have dubbed this water as the third one called [unclear].

અને તેઓએ આ પાણીને ઉપનામિત કર્યું છે, એક ત્રીજા પ્રકારના પાણી તરીકે, નામે "દ્રેજાની".

And there is a gypsum belt running below it.

અને ત્યાં તેની નીચે જીપ્સમનું સ્તર છે.

And it was deposited by the great mother Earth,

some three million years ago.

This year they have received only six centimeters.

Six centimeter of rainfall,

and they can telephone you

that if you find any water problem in your city,

How they maintain them?

There are three things: concept, planning,

making the actual thing, and also maintaining them.

તો તમને કઈક બહુ જ સરસ મળશે.

This was done in 11th century.

આ ૧૧ મી સદીમાં બનાવેલું છું.

અને તમારે હજુ નીચે જવું પડશે.

India could get the first engineering college

ભારતમાં પ્રથમ ઈજનેરી કોલેજ આવી શકી

in 1847.

૧૮૪૭ માં.

There were no English medium schools at that time,

તે સમયે કોઈ અંગ્રેજી માધ્યમની શાળાઓ નહોતી.

even no Hindi schools, [unclear] schools.

ના તો હિન્દી શાળાઓ, કોઈ શાળાઓ નહિ.

But such people, compelled to the East India Company,

પરંતુ આવા લોકોએ ઇસ્ટ ઇન્ડિયા કંપનીને વિવશ કર્યા કે,

which came here for business, a very dirty kind of business ...

જે અહી વ્યાપાર કરવા માટે આવ્યા હતા, એક ગંદા પ્રકારનો વ્યાપાર...

but not to create the engineering colleges.

પરંતુ કોઈ ઈજનેરી કોલેજની રચના કરવા માટે નહિ,

But because of them, first engineering college was created

પરંતુ તેઓના લીધે, પહેલી ઈજનેરી કોલેજની રચના કરવામાં આવી.

in a small village, not in the town.

એક નાના ગામડામાં, શહેરમાં નહિ.

The last point, we all know in our primary schools that

છેલ્લો મુદ્દો, આપણે જાણીએ છીએ આપણી પ્રાથમીક શાળામાં કે

that camel is a ship of desert.

ઊંટ એ રણનું વહાણ છે.

So, you can find through your Jeep,

This tire comes from the airplane.

So, look at the beauty from the desert society

તો, રણ સમાજની એ સુંદરતા જુઓ

who can harvest rainwater,

and also create something

અને કઈ રચી પણ શકે છે.

through a tire from a jet plane,

એક જેટ વિમાનના પૈડાનો,.

and used in a camel cart.

ઊંટગાડીમાં ઉપયોગ કર્યો છે.

Last picture, it's a tattoo,

છેલ્લું ચિત્ર, આ છે એક ટેટુ,

2,000-years-old tattoo.

૨૦૦૦ વર્ષો જૂનો ટેટુ.

They were using it on their body.

તેઓ તેને તેમના શરીર પર ઉપયોગ કરી રહ્યા હતા.

Tattoo was, at one time,

એક સમયે ટેટુ,

a kind of a blacklisted

અયોગ્ય વસ્તુની યાદીમાં

or con thing, but now it is in thing.
