In this video, I’m going to talk about the two similar and sometimes confusing English expressions

‘used to’ and ‘be used to’.

'used to' e 'be used to'.

These expressions can be confusing,

but this video will help you understand the difference and when to use them.

Let’s start with ‘used to’.

Vamos começar com 'costumava'.

Its form is ‘used to’ + the infinitive.

Sua forma é 'usado para' + o infinitivo.

It's used as a verb.

É usado como verbo.

'used to' expresses that an activity was a past habit.

'costumava' expressa que uma atividade era um hábito passado.

It was a regular occurrence at an earlier stage of life

Era uma ocorrência regular numa fase anterior da vida,

but not anymore.

mas não é mais.

Let’s look at some examples.

Vejamos alguns exemplos.

The first sentence says, ‘I used to drink green tea.’

A primeira frase diz: 'Eu costumava beber chá verde'.

However, because it says ‘used to’ it means not anymore.

No entanto, porque diz 'costumava', significa que não mais.

It used to be a regular thing in the past

Costumava ser uma coisa normal no passado,

but I don't drink green tea anymore.

mas não bebo mais chá verde.

The next sentence says, ‘Karen used to play with dolls.’

A próxima frase diz: 'Karen costumava brincar com bonecas'.

Again, Karen played with dolls a lot maybe in the past

Novamente, Karen brincava muito com bonecas, talvez no passado,

but she doesn't play with dolls anymore

mas ela não brinca mais com bonecas

and that's why we used ‘used to’.

e é por isso que costumávamos 'costumá-lo'.

Now, I’ll move on to ‘be used to’.

Agora, passarei para 'estar acostumado'.

Its form is ‘be’ or ‘get used to’.

Sua forma é 'ser' ou 'acostumar-se'.

It means that you are accustomed to something.

Isso significa que você está acostumado com alguma coisa.

You don't find it unusual. It's familiar to you.

Você não acha isso incomum. É familiar para você.

Let’s look at some examples.

Vejamos alguns exemplos.

The first sentence says,

A primeira frase diz:

‘I’m getting used to working at night.’

'Estou me acostumando a trabalhar à noite'.

Remember, the form can be ‘be used to’ or ‘get used to’.

Lembre-se de que o formulário pode ser 'acostumar-se' ou 'acostumar-se a'.

In this example, we're using ‘get used to’.

Neste exemplo, estamos usando 'acostumar-se a'.

‘I’m getting used to working at night.’

'Estou me acostumando a trabalhar à noite.'

I’m becoming familiar with working at night.

Estou me familiarizando com o trabalho noturno.

Maybe it's because I’ve been working at night for a long time.

Talvez seja porque trabalho à noite há muito tempo.

The next sentence says,

A próxima frase diz:

‘She's used to the heat in the summer.’

'Ela está acostumada com o calor do verão'.

Here, we use the ‘be’ verb ‘she is’.

Aqui, usamos o verbo 'ser' 'ela é'.

‘She's used to the heat in the summer.’

'Ela está acostumada com o calor do verão.'

She's accustomed to it.

Ela está acostumada com isso.

Maybe it's because she lived in a hot place when she was young.

Talvez seja porque ela morou em um lugar quente quando era jovem.

Now, let's move on to a checkup.

Agora, vamos passar para um check-up.

In this conversation, there are two sentences.

Nesta conversa, há duas frases.

In one of the sentences, we use ‘used to’.

Em uma das frases, usamos 'used to'.

In the other sentence, we need to use ‘be’ or ‘get used to’.

Na outra frase, precisamos usar 'be' ou 'get used to'.

Take a moment to think about where we use these expressions.

Pare um momento para pensar sobre onde usamos essas expressões.

‘A’ says, ‘I _blank_ have a better work schedule.’

'A' diz: 'Eu _em branco_ tenho um horário de trabalho melhor.'

‘A’ is trying to express that in the past he had a better work schedule

'A' está tentando expressar que no passado ele tinha um horário de trabalho melhor

but that's not true anymore.

, mas isso não é mais verdade.

So we need to use ‘used to’.

Então precisamos usar 'used to'.

‘I used to have a better work schedule.’

'Eu costumava ter um horário de trabalho melhor.'

‘B’ says, ‘Don't worry. You'll _blank_ this new schedule soon.’

'B' diz: 'Não se preocupe. Você _anulará_ esta nova programação em breve.'

‘B’ is trying to tell ‘A’

'B' está tentando dizer a 'A' que

after some time

depois de algum tempo

you'll be accustomed to your new schedule.

você estará acostumado com sua nova programação.

So ‘B’ can say,

‘Don't worry. You'll be used to this new schedule soon,’

'Não se preocupe. Você estará acostumado com essa nova programação em breve'

or ‘Don't worry. you'll get used to this new schedule soon.’

ou 'Não se preocupe. você vai se acostumar com esse novo horário em breve.

So if we look at this conversation altogether,

‘A’ says,

'A' diz:

‘I used to have a better work schedule.’

'Eu costumava ter um horário de trabalho melhor.'

‘B’ says,

'B' diz:

‘Don't worry. You'll get used to this new schedule soon.’

Now you know the difference between ‘used to’ and ‘be used to’.
