In this video, I’m going to talk about the two similar and sometimes confusing English expressions

이번 영상에서는 비슷하면서도 헷갈릴 수 있는 두 가지 영어 표현

‘used to’ and ‘be used to’.

'used to'와 'be used to'에 대해 이야기해보려고 합니다.

These expressions can be confusing,

이러한 표현은 혼란스러울 수

but this video will help you understand the difference and when to use them.

Let’s start with ‘used to’.

'익숙하다'부터 시작해보자.

Its form is ‘used to’ + the infinitive.

형태는 'used to' + 부정사입니다.

It's used as a verb.

동사로 쓰입니다.

'used to' expresses that an activity was a past habit.

used to는 활동이 과거의 습관임을 나타냅니다.

It was a regular occurrence at an earlier stage of life

그것은 삶의 초기 단계에서 정기적으로 발생했지만

but not anymore.

더 이상은 아닙니다.

Let’s look at some examples.

몇 가지 예를 살펴보겠습니다.

The first sentence says, ‘I used to drink green tea.’

첫 번째 문장은 'I used to drink green tea'인데,

However, because it says ‘used to’ it means not anymore.

'익숙하다'라고 써 있으니 더 이상은 아니라는 뜻입니다.

It used to be a regular thing in the past

예전에는 흔한 일이었지만

but I don't drink green tea anymore.

이제는 녹차를 마시지 않습니다.

The next sentence says, ‘Karen used to play with dolls.’

다음 문장은 'Karen used to play with dolls'입니다.

Again, Karen played with dolls a lot maybe in the past

다시 Karen은 과거에는 인형을 많이 가지고 놀았

but she doesn't play with dolls anymore

지만 더 이상 인형을 가지고 놀지 않기

and that's why we used ‘used to’.

때문에 'used to'를 사용했습니다.

Now, I’ll move on to ‘be used to’.

이제 '익숙하다'로 넘어가겠습니다.

Its form is ‘be’ or ‘get used to’.

형태는 '되다' 또는 '익숙해지다'입니다.

It means that you are accustomed to something.

그것은 당신이 무언가에 익숙하다는 것을 의미합니다.

You don't find it unusual. It's familiar to you.

당신은 그것이 이상하다고 생각하지 않습니다. 그것은 당신에게 친숙합니다.

Let’s look at some examples.

몇 가지 예를 살펴보겠습니다.

The first sentence says,

‘I’m getting used to working at night.’

'I'm getting used to working at night'입니다.

Remember, the form can be ‘be used to’ or ‘get used to’.

In this example, we're using ‘get used to’.

이 예에서는 'get used to'를 사용하고 있습니다.

‘I’m getting used to working at night.’

'야근에 익숙해지고 있어요'

I’m becoming familiar with working at night.

Maybe it's because I’ve been working at night for a long time.

오랫동안 밤샘 작업을 했기 때문일 수도 있습니다.

The next sentence says,

다음 문장은

‘She's used to the heat in the summer.’

'She's used to the summer in the summer'입니다.

Here, we use the ‘be’ verb ‘she is’.

여기서는 'be'동사인 'she is'를 사용합니다.

‘She's used to the heat in the summer.’

'그녀는 여름의 더위에 익숙해져 있다.'

She's accustomed to it.

그녀는 그것에 익숙해져 있다.

Maybe it's because she lived in a hot place when she was young.

아마도 그녀가 어렸을 때 더운 곳에서 살았기 때문일 것이다.

Now, let's move on to a checkup.

이제 점검으로 넘어가겠습니다.

In this conversation, there are two sentences.

이 대화에는 두 개의 문장이 있습니다.

In one of the sentences, we use ‘used to’.

문장 중 하나에서 'used to'를 사용합니다.

In the other sentence, we need to use ‘be’ or ‘get used to’.

다른 문장에서는 'be' 또는 'get used to'를 사용해야 합니다.

Take a moment to think about where we use these expressions.

우리가 이러한 표현을 어디에 사용하는지 잠시 생각해 보십시오.

‘A’ says, ‘I _blank_ have a better work schedule.’

A씨는 '나 _blank_' 근무 일정이 더 좋다'고 말합니다. '

‘A’ is trying to express that in the past he had a better work schedule

but that's not true anymore.

So we need to use ‘used to’.

‘I used to have a better work schedule.’

‘B’ says, ‘Don't worry. You'll _blank_ this new schedule soon.’

‘B’ is trying to tell ‘A’

B'는 'A'에게

after some time

you'll be accustomed to your new schedule.

So ‘B’ can say,

‘Don't worry. You'll be used to this new schedule soon,’

So if we look at this conversation altogether,

Now you know the difference between ‘used to’ and ‘be used to’.
