What is a prefix?

You're going to hear, prefix, and sometimes, suffix.

We're not worried about suffix today, we're just worried about prefix.

Prefixes, a group, a letter or a group of letters.

They go before a word. A suffix would be after a word.

Prefixes and suffixes are very old English.

Actually, they come from before English, they come from Latin, and Greek.

All these prefixes and suffixes, so we use them a lot in English, but they're old, old words.

So prefix - a letter or group letters added to the beginning of a word to change its meaning,

So the English prefix 'ab' which means...

it means away from. Again this is old English, this is from Latin and Greek.

AB is this prefix.

And when we use it in words, and we're going to talk about these eight words,

So I'm going to go through these words quickly. Let's look at the first one here.

Abnormal

ပုံမှန်မဟုတ်တာ

All right, that's that's that's common. All of these words are common.

So abnormal means different from what is usual or expected.

So there are our normal weather conditions, where the sea the ship can sail.

But for some reason there was abnormal weather conditions, maybe a lot of rain, maybe a big storm.

Usually I gave one example sentence, but here you got two.

Second word here, 'absent'.

Away from a place.

So away from a place, you're absent, which means not in a place like, work or a class.

So if you don't go to work, or you don't go to class, you're absent.

Which means away from being in power.

Number four, abort.

နံပါတ်လေး၊ သားပျက်။

So abort means away from finishing.

ဒါကြောင့် ကိုယ်ဝန်ဖျက်ချခြင်း ဆိုသည်မှာ ပြီးဆုံးခြင်းမှ ဝေးကွာခြင်း ဖြစ်သည်။

You're not going to finish something. You're going to cancel it.

မင်း တစ်ခုခုတော့ ပြီးသွားမှာမဟုတ်ဘူး။ အဲဒါကို သင် ပယ်ဖျက်တော့မယ်။

You're going to abort it.

သားဖျက်တော့မယ်။

And the meaning - to end or cause something to end before it has been completed.

That's really formal, but in this case, we usually use abort.

နံပါတ်ငါး။

Absorb.

စုပ်ယူ။

absorb, says suck away from, suck away from the surroundings.

And another example here, black walls, or anything black, absorb a lot of heat during the day.

နောက်ဥပမာတစ်ခုကတော့ အနက်ရောင်နံရံတွေ ဒါမှမဟုတ် အနက်ရောင်တစ်ခုခုက နေ့ဘက်မှာ အပူကို အများကြီးစုပ်ယူပါတယ်။

So I heard that the sun, if there's something black, that will absorb heat,

ဒါကြောင့် နေရောင်က အနက်ရောင်တစ်ခုခုရှိနေရင် အပူစုပ်မယ့်

that will get the heat.

အပူရှိန်ကို ရလိမ့်မယ်ဆိုတာ ငါကြားတယ်။

All right. Number six.

ကောင်းပါပြီ။ နံပါတ်ခြောက်။

Abduct.

ခိုးပြေး။

So abduct, take away from.

ဒါကြောင့် ခိုးပြေး၊ ရှောင်ဖယ်၊

To take somebody away illegally.

တစ်စုံတစ်ဦးကိုတရားမ၀င်သိမ်းယူရန်။

So this is very bad.

ဒီတော့ ဒါက အရမ်းဆိုးတယ်။

This is not a good thing, especially using force.

အထူးသဖြင့် အင်အားသုံးခြင်းသည် ကောင်းသောကိစ္စမဟုတ်ပေ။

So someone doesn't want to go somewhere, but you are taking them, you abduct them.

ဒါကြောင့် တစ်ယောက်ယောက်က တစ်နေရာရာကို မသွားချင်ပေမယ့် မင်းသူတို့ကို ခေါ်သွားပြီး မင်းသူတို့ကို ပြန်ပေးဆွဲတယ်။

And here is an example.

ပြီးတော့ ဒါက ဥပမာတစ်ခုပါ။

The young girl was abducted by a stranger while she was walking home.

အိမ်ပြန်လမ်းလျှောက်လာစဉ် မိန်းကလေးငယ်ကို သူစိမ်းတစ်ဦးက ပြန်ပေးဆွဲသွားခဲ့သည်။

This is every parent's nightmare.

ဒါက မိဘတိုင်းရဲ့ အိပ်မက်ဆိုးပါ။

The girl is walking home, some stranger grabs her, takes her away.

ကောင်မလေးက အိမ်ပြန်သွားတော့ လူစိမ်းတချို့က သူ့ကို ဖမ်းဆွဲခေါ်သွားကြတယ်။

She is abducted.

သူမကို ဖမ်းဆီးခေါ်ဆောင်သွားသည်။

All right. Absolutely.

ကောင်းပါပြီ။ မေးတာ။

'Absolutely' means away from doubt.

ယုံမှားခြင်းမှ ကင်းဝေးခြင်းဟု အဓိပ္ပါယ်ရသည်။

So 'doubt' means I'm not sure, I don't know.

ဒီတော့ 'သံသယ' ဆိုတာက မသေချာဘူး၊ မသိဘူး။

But you're away from that.

ဒါပေမယ့် မင်းအဲဒါနဲ့ဝေးတယ်။

Absolutely.

မေးတာ။

This word is used to emphasize that something is completely true.

တစ်စုံတစ်ခုသည် လုံးဝမှန်ကန်ကြောင်း အလေးပေးဖော်ပြရန် ဤစကားလုံးကို သုံးသည်။

Robin is the best teacher in the world. Absolutely.

ရော်ဘင်သည် ကမ္ဘာပေါ်တွင် အကောင်းဆုံးဆရာဖြစ်သည်။ မေးတာ။

No doubt. Away from the doubt.

ဖြစ်ကောင်းဖြစ်နိုင်သည်။ ယုံမှားခြင်းမှ ကင်းဝေးကြပါစေ။

Example sentence - Learning English is absolutely essential for making international friends.

ဥပမာဝါကျ - အင်္ဂလိပ်စာလေ့လာခြင်းသည် နိုင်ငံတကာမိတ်ဆွေများဖွဲ့ရန်အတွက် လုံးဝမရှိမဖြစ်လိုအပ်ပါသည်။

Do you agree with that?

အဲဒါကို သင်သဘောတူပါသလား။

And the last one.

ပြီးတော့ နောက်ဆုံးတစ်ခု။

Abuse - away from proper use.

အလွဲသုံးစားပြုခြင်း - သင့်လျော်စွာအသုံးပြုခြင်းမှဝေးရာ။

You have the way to use or use something,

သင့်တွင် တစ်ခုခုကို အသုံးပြုရန် သို့မဟုတ် အသုံးပြုရန် နည်းလမ်း၊

the proper way and you're away from that. So it's abuse.

သင့်လျော်သောနည်းလမ်းရှိပြီး ၎င်းနှင့် ဝေးကွာနေပါသည်။ ဒါကြောင့် အလွဲသုံးစားလုပ်တာ။

You're not using it properly.

သင် မှန်ကန်စွာ မသုံးတတ်ပါ။

So the the definition here, the use of something in a way that is wrong or harmful.

ထို့ကြောင့် ဤနေရာတွင် အဓိပ္ပါယ်ဖွင့်ဆိုချက်မှာ မှားယွင်းသော သို့မဟုတ် အန္တရာယ်ရှိသော နည်းလမ်းဖြင့် တစ်ခုခုကို အသုံးပြုခြင်းဖြစ်သည်။

As we all know, politicians abuse their power.

အားလုံးသိကြတဲ့အတိုင်း နိုင်ငံရေးသမားတွေက အာဏာကို အလွဲသုံးစားလုပ်ကြတယ်။

They have power. They do not use the power correctly. They abuse it. They use it in the wrong way.

သူတို့မှာ အာဏာရှိတယ်။ အာဏာကို မှန်မှန်ကန်ကန် မသုံးကြဘူး။ အလွဲသုံးစားလုပ်ကြတယ်။ သူတို့က အဲဒါကို လွဲမှားစွာသုံးတယ်။

And here's unfortunately another example of 'abuse'.

ဤတွင် ကံမကောင်းအကြောင်းမလှစွာဖြင့် 'အလွဲသုံးစားလုပ်ခြင်း' ၏ နောက်ထပ်ဥပမာတစ်ခုဖြစ်သည်။

The wife was a victim of domestic abuse.

ဇနီးသည်က အိမ်တွင်းမှုကျူးလွန်ခြင်း၏ သားကောင်ဖြစ်ခဲ့သည်။

So when do we use 'domestic abuse'?

ဒီတော့ 'အိမ်တွင်းအကြမ်းဖက်မှု' ကို ဘယ်အချိန်မှာ သုံးမလဲ။

That means the husband, or the partner,

ဆိုလိုသည်မှာ ခင်ပွန်း သို့မဟုတ် လုပ်ဖော်ကိုင်ဖက်

was hitting them, you know,

သည် ၎င်းတို့အား စော်ကားခြင်း၊

abusing them, maybe verbal abuse or physical abuse, some sort of bad thing to the wife.

နှုတ်ဖြင့် စော်ကားခြင်း သို့မဟုတ် ကိုယ်ထိလက်ရောက် စော်ကားခြင်း၊ ဇနီးမယားအပေါ် မကောင်းမှုအချို့ ပြုလုပ်ခြင်း ဖြစ်နိုင်သည်။

It's very unfortunate, but that's how we use it. So that's abuse.

အရမ်းကံမကောင်းပေမယ့် အဲဒါကို ကျွန်တော်တို့ သုံးပါတယ်။ ဒါ အလွဲသုံးစားလုပ်တာ။

ထို့ကြောင့် ပုံမှန်မဟုတ်သော၊ ပျက်ကွက်ခြင်း၊ စွန့်လွှတ်ခြင်း၊ သားလျှောခြင်း၊ စုပ်ယူခြင်း၊ ခိုးယူခြင်း၊ လုံးဝ၊ အလွဲသုံးစားလုပ်ခြင်း။

All these words have that A-B prefix.
