What is a prefix?

You're going to hear, prefix, and sometimes, suffix.

We're not worried about suffix today, we're just worried about prefix.

Prefixes, a group, a letter or a group of letters.

They go before a word. A suffix would be after a word.

Mialoha ny teny izy ireo. Misy tovana iray aorian'ny teny.

Prefixes and suffixes are very old English.

Ny tovana sy ny tovana dia tena anglisy taloha.

Actually, they come from before English, they come from Latin, and Greek.

Raha ny marina, dia avy amin'ny teny anglisy izy ireo, avy amin'ny teny latinina sy grika.

All these prefixes and suffixes, so we use them a lot in English, but they're old, old words.

So prefix - a letter or group letters added to the beginning of a word to change its meaning,

We are going to talk about the prefix 'a-b' prefix.

So the English prefix 'ab' which means...

Avy amin'ny teny anglisy ny prefix 'ab' midika hoe...

it means away from. Again this is old English, this is from Latin and Greek.

midika hoe lavitra. Ity indray dia anglisy taloha, avy amin'ny latinina sy grika.

AB is this prefix.

AB io prefix io.

And when we use it in words, and we're going to talk about these eight words,

Ary rehefa mampiasa azy amin'ny teny isika, ary hiresaka momba ireo teny valo ireo,

it means away from.

dia midika hoe lavitra.

So I'm going to go through these words quickly. Let's look at the first one here.

Noho izany dia handeha hamaky haingana ireo teny ireo aho. Andeha hojerentsika ny voalohany eto.

Abnormal

Tsy mety

All right, that's that's that's common. All of these words are common.

, izany no mahazatra. Ireo teny rehetra ireo dia mahazatra.

Abnormal.

tsy ara-dalàna.

You see the 'AB' in normal.

Hitanao amin'ny mahazatra ny 'AB'.

So the root word there is 'normal'.

Things that are normal, there... that are happening always.

Ny zavatra ara-dalàna, any... mitranga foana.

And 'abnormal' would be, the meaning would be away, away from normal, abnormal.

Ary ny 'abnormal' dia ho, ny dikany dia lavitra, lavitra ny mahazatra, tsy ara-dalàna.

So abnormal means different from what is usual or expected.

Remember, your homework is to make your own sentence with 'abnormal' - with all the words.

Tsarovy fa ny entimodinao dia ny manao fehezanteny manokana miaraka amin'ny 'tsy mahazatra' - miaraka amin'ny teny rehetra.

So the first example sentence,

The ship was blown off course by abnormal weather conditions.

So there are our normal weather conditions, where the sea the ship can sail.

But for some reason there was abnormal weather conditions, maybe a lot of rain, maybe a big storm.

Saingy noho ny antony sasany dia nisy ny toetr'andro tsy ara-dalàna, mety ho be ny orana, mety ho tafiotra mahery.

Something was strange.

Nisy zavatra hafahafa.

So the ship was blown off course.

Dia nitsoka ny sambo.

And I have another example sentence here. Lucky you.

Ary manana fehezanteny ohatra hafa aho eto. Tsara vintana ianao.

Usually I gave one example sentence, but here you got two.

Matetika aho no nanome fehezanteny iray ohatra, fa eto ianao dia mahazo roa.

His behavior is abnormal, so he has no friends.

Tsy mety ny fitondran-tenany, ka tsy manana namana.

So this is talking about my childhood.

Ka io no resaka fahazazako.

So something's wrong with his behavior.

Ka misy tsy mety amin'ny fitondran-tenany.

It's abnormal, not normal.

Tsy normal izany fa tsy normal.

So he has no friends. It's a sad story.

Tsy manana namana àry izy. Tantara mampalahelo izany.

All right, so that's abnormal.

Your first word.

Ny teninao voalohany.

You got to make your own example sentence in your homework.

Tsy maintsy manao fehezanteny ohatra ianao ao amin'ny entimodinao.

I prefer you to make it example sentence about your life.

And of course, don't cheat, don't translate from your language and certainly don't use ChatGPT.

Second word here, 'absent'.

Teny faharoa eto, 'tsy misy'.

Away from a place.

Lavitra toerana.

So away from a place, you're absent, which means not in a place like, work or a class.

Ka lavitry ny toerana iray dia tsy eo ianao, izany hoe tsy any amin'ny toerana toy ny asa na kilasy.

So if you don't go to work, or you don't go to class, you're absent.

Ka raha tsy mandeha miasa ianao, na tsy mianatra dia tsy manatrika.

Anna Maria is, just just a name, is always absent from class.

Ana Maria dia anarana fotsiny, tsy ao an-dakilasy foana.

That's my example. So this student is always absent from class.

Izany no ohatra ahy. Noho izany dia tsy ao an-dakilasy foana ity mpianatra ity.

This is not this is not the Anna Maria I know, this is a different Anna Maria.

Tsy ity no tsy ilay Anna Maria fantatro fa hafa Anna Maria ity.

Number three.

Laharana fahatelo.

OK, this might be a new word to some of you.

OK, mety ho teny vaovao ho an'ny sasany aminareo ity.

Abdicate.

Abdicate.

Which means away from being in power.

Izany hoe lavitry ny fitondrana.

So the meaning here is to give up the position of being king, queen or emperor.

Ka ny dikany eto dia ny mahafoy ny toeran'ny maha mpanjaka, mpanjakavavy na emperora.

So if there's a king, queen or emperor and they don't want the power anymore, they abdicate.

They, they, they give up the power and they just become normal people.

Number four, abort.

Laharana efatra, fanalana zaza.

So abort means away from finishing.

Noho izany ny fanalana dia midika hoe miala amin'ny famaranana.

You're not going to finish something. You're going to cancel it.

Tsy hamita zavatra ianao. Hofoananao izany.

You're going to abort it.

Hanala zaza ianao.

And the meaning - to end or cause something to end before it has been completed.

Ary ny dikany - ny mamarana na mampitsahatra zavatra alohan'ny hahavitany azy.

So you're not going to finish it.

Ka tsy ho vitanao izany.

You're not going to complete it.

Tsy ho vitanao izany.

It is aborted for whatever reason.

Ajanona na inona na inona antony.

You stop doing that.

Atsaharo ny manao izany.

So some example sentence - sentences. I got two here.

Noho izany, ohatra iray - fehezanteny. Nahazo roa aho teto.

Due to the bad weather, we had to abort the mission.

Noho ny andro ratsy dia voatery nanakana ny iraka izahay.

So we...

Ka izahay...

it's a little bit formal. All right.

somary ara-dalàna. Tsara izany.

I wouldn't say I'm going to abort my trip to Japan because of the weather.

Tsy hilaza aho hoe hanajanona ny diako any Japon noho ny toetrandro.

I would say I'm going to cancel my trip to Japan.

OK, so abort is a little bit formal.

OK, noho izany dia somary ofisialy ny fanalan-jaza.

So here we're going to abort a mission, maybe a military mission or something formal.

And the second common use of abort, and you know,

I don't really like to talk about this topic, but you have to know, this is where the word is used in English.

She aborted her baby. All right.

Nanalana ny zanany izy. Tsara izany.

So she was pregnant and for maybe health reasons or financial reasons or whatever reason,

she decided she didn't want to have the baby anymore.

So she went to the doctor and we say aborted.

We also use the word 'terminated', which is even more formal.

To terminate.

That's really formal, but in this case, we usually use abort.

Tena ofisialy izany, fa amin'ity tranga ity dia matetika no mampiasa fanalana zaza.

Number five.

Laharana fahadimy.

Absorb.

Misoroka.

absorb, says suck away from, suck away from the surroundings.

mifoka, mitsoka, mitsoka ny manodidina.

So the meaning here, to take, to take in.

ake in a liquid, gas, light, sound, heat, energy from a surface or space around.

ake ao anaty ranon-javatra, gazy, hazavana, feo, hafanana, angovo avy amin'ny habakabaka na habakabaka manodidina.

Let's look at our example sentences.

Andeha hojerentsika ireo fehezanteny ohatra.

Says, 'Let the rice cook until it has absorbed all the water.'

Hoy izy: 'Avelao ho masaka ny vary mandra-pandany ny rano rehetra.'

So yeah, you put rice in the water,

Eny, ampidirinao ao anaty rano ny vary,

the dry rice in the water, and the rice will absorb the water.

ny vary maina ao anaty rano, ary ny vary dia hitroka ny rano.

And so the rice is away from the other place. It's coming into the water.

Ary noho izany ny vary dia lavitra ny toerana hafa. Miditra ao anaty rano izy io.

And another example here, black walls, or anything black, absorb a lot of heat during the day.

Ary ohatra iray hafa eto, rindrina mainty, na inona na inona mainty, dia mandray hafanana be mandritra ny andro.

So I heard that the sun, if there's something black, that will absorb heat,

Henoko àry fa ny masoandro, raha misy zavatra mainty, mitroka hafanana,

that will get the heat.

All right. Number six.

Abduct.

fakana an-keriny.

So abduct, take away from.

And here is an example.

Ary ity misy ohatra.

The young girl was abducted by a stranger while she was walking home.

This is every parent's nightmare.

Izany no nofinofin'ny ray aman-dreny rehetra.

The girl is walking home, some stranger grabs her, takes her away.

Mandeha hody ilay tovovavy, nisy olon-tsy fantatra nisambotra azy, nitondra azy.

She is abducted.

Nalaina an-keriny izy.

All right. Absolutely.

Tsara izany. tanteraka.

'Absolutely' means away from doubt.

Ny hoe 'tena' dia midika hoe lavitry ny fisalasalana.

So 'doubt' means I'm not sure, I don't know.

But you're away from that.

This word is used to emphasize that something is completely true.

Example sentence - Learning English is absolutely essential for making international friends.

And the last one.

Ary ny farany.

Abuse - away from proper use.

Fanararaotana - lavitra ny fampiasana araka ny tokony ho izy.

You have the way to use or use something,

the proper way and you're away from that. So it's abuse.

You're not using it properly.

They have power. They do not use the power correctly. They abuse it. They use it in the wrong way.

And here's unfortunately another example of 'abuse'.

Ary indrisy fa ohatra iray hafa momba ny 'fanararaotana' ity.

The wife was a victim of domestic abuse.

Niharan’ny herisetra tao an-tokantrano ilay ramatoa.

So when do we use 'domestic abuse'?

Koa rahoviana isika no mampiasa 'fanararaotana an-trano'?

That means the husband, or the partner,

abusing them, maybe verbal abuse or physical abuse, some sort of bad thing to the wife.

It's very unfortunate, but that's how we use it. So that's abuse.
