What is a prefix?

You're going to hear, prefix, and sometimes, suffix.

We're not worried about suffix today, we're just worried about prefix.

Prefixes, a group, a letter or a group of letters.

They go before a word. A suffix would be after a word.

Prefixes and suffixes are very old English.

Actually, they come from before English, they come from Latin, and Greek.

So prefix - a letter or group letters added to the beginning of a word to change its meaning,

So we have the root word, happy, and of course we can use the prefix 'un' to change the meaning of happy to actually the opposite unhappy.

We are going to talk about the prefix 'a-b' prefix.

So the English prefix 'ab' which means...

it means away from. Again this is old English, this is from Latin and Greek.

AB is this prefix.

And when we use it in words, and we're going to talk about these eight words,

So I'm going to go through these words quickly. Let's look at the first one here.

Abnormal

All right, that's that's that's common. All of these words are common.

Abnormal.

You see the 'AB' in normal.

So the root word there is 'normal'.

Things that are normal, there... that are happening always.

And 'abnormal' would be, the meaning would be away, away from normal, abnormal.

ಮತ್ತು 'ಅಸಹಜ' ಆಗಿರುತ್ತದೆ, ಅರ್ಥವು ದೂರವಿರುತ್ತದೆ, ಸಾಮಾನ್ಯದಿಂದ ದೂರವಿರುತ್ತದೆ, ಅಸಹಜವಾಗಿರುತ್ತದೆ.

So abnormal means different from what is usual or expected.

So the first example sentence,

So there are our normal weather conditions, where the sea the ship can sail.

But for some reason there was abnormal weather conditions, maybe a lot of rain, maybe a big storm.

Usually I gave one example sentence, but here you got two.

Second word here, 'absent'.

Away from a place.

So away from a place, you're absent, which means not in a place like, work or a class.

ಕೆಟ್ಟ ಹವಾಮಾನದ ಕಾರಣ, ನಾವು ಕಾರ್ಯಾಚರಣೆಯನ್ನು ಸ್ಥಗಿತಗೊಳಿಸಬೇಕಾಯಿತು.

So we...

ಆದ್ದರಿಂದ ನಾವು ...

it's a little bit formal. All right.

ಇದು ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ಔಪಚಾರಿಕವಾಗಿದೆ. ಸರಿ.

I wouldn't say I'm going to abort my trip to Japan because of the weather.

ನಾನು ನನ್ನ ಜಪಾನ್ ಪ್ರವಾಸವನ್ನು ರದ್ದುಗೊಳಿಸಲಿದ್ದೇನೆ ಎಂದು ನಾನು ಹೇಳುತ್ತೇನೆ.

OK, so abort is a little bit formal.

ಸರಿ, ಆದ್ದರಿಂದ ಸ್ಥಗಿತಗೊಳಿಸುವುದು ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ಔಪಚಾರಿಕವಾಗಿದೆ.

So here we're going to abort a mission, maybe a military mission or something formal.

And the second common use of abort, and you know,

We also use the word 'terminated', which is even more formal.

That... that means absorb, take in, something is absorbing.

ಅದು... ಅಂದರೆ ಹೀರಿಕೊಳ್ಳುವುದು, ತೆಗೆದುಕೊಳ್ಳಿ, ಏನನ್ನಾದರೂ ಹೀರಿಕೊಳ್ಳುವುದು.

Take in a liquid, gas, light, sound, heat, energy.

ದ್ರವ, ಅನಿಲ, ಬೆಳಕು, ಧ್ವನಿ, ಶಾಖ, ಶಕ್ತಿಯನ್ನು ತೆಗೆದುಕೊಳ್ಳಿ.

So you can take in many things from a surface.

ಆದ್ದರಿಂದ ನೀವು ಮೇಲ್ಮೈಯಿಂದ ಅನೇಕ ವಿಷಯಗಳನ್ನು ತೆಗೆದುಕೊಳ್ಳಬಹುದು.

So a surface, so if you have like a table, that's a surface, and you have water on the table,

‘ಅಕ್ಕಿ ನೀರೆಲ್ಲ ಹೀರುವವರೆಗೆ ಬೇಯಲಿ’ ಎನ್ನುತ್ತಾನೆ.

So yeah, you put rice in the water,

ಹೌದು, ನೀವು ಅಕ್ಕಿಯನ್ನು ನೀರಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಹಾಕುತ್ತೀರಿ,

the dry rice in the water, and the rice will absorb the water.

ಒಣ ಅಕ್ಕಿಯನ್ನು ನೀರಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಹಾಕುತ್ತೀರಿ ಮತ್ತು ಅಕ್ಕಿ ನೀರನ್ನು ಹೀರಿಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತದೆ.

And so the rice is away from the other place. It's coming into the water.

To take somebody away illegally.

ಅಕ್ರಮವಾಗಿ ಯಾರನ್ನಾದರೂ ಕರೆದುಕೊಂಡು ಹೋಗುವುದು.

So this is very bad.

ಆದ್ದರಿಂದ ಇದು ತುಂಬಾ ಕೆಟ್ಟದು.

This is not a good thing, especially using force.

ಇದು ಒಳ್ಳೆಯದಲ್ಲ, ವಿಶೇಷವಾಗಿ ಬಲವನ್ನು ಬಳಸುವುದು.

So someone doesn't want to go somewhere, but you are taking them, you abduct them.

ಆದ್ದರಿಂದ ಯಾರಾದರೂ ಎಲ್ಲೋ ಹೋಗಲು ಬಯಸುವುದಿಲ್ಲ, ಆದರೆ ನೀವು ಅವರನ್ನು ಕರೆದೊಯ್ಯುತ್ತೀರಿ, ನೀವು ಅವರನ್ನು ಅಪಹರಿಸುತ್ತೀರಿ.

And here is an example.

The girl is walking home, some stranger grabs her, takes her away.

ಹುಡುಗಿ ಮನೆಗೆ ಹೋಗುತ್ತಿದ್ದಾಳೆ, ಯಾರೋ ಅಪರಿಚಿತರು ಅವಳನ್ನು ಹಿಡಿದುಕೊಂಡು ಹೋಗುತ್ತಾರೆ.

She is abducted.

ಆಕೆ ಅಪಹರಣಕ್ಕೊಳಗಾಗಿದ್ದಾಳೆ.

All right. Absolutely.

ಸರಿ. ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣವಾಗಿ.

'Absolutely' means away from doubt.

'ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣವಾಗಿ' ಎಂದರೆ ಅನುಮಾನದಿಂದ ದೂರ.

So 'doubt' means I'm not sure, I don't know.

ಹಾಗಾಗಿ 'ಅನುಮಾನ' ಎಂದರೆ ನನಗೆ ಖಚಿತವಿಲ್ಲ, ನನಗೆ ಗೊತ್ತಿಲ್ಲ.

But you're away from that.

ಆದರೆ ನೀವು ಅದರಿಂದ ದೂರವಿದ್ದೀರಿ.

Absolutely.

ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣವಾಗಿ.

This word is used to emphasize that something is completely true.

ಈ ಪದವನ್ನು ಯಾವುದೋ ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣವಾಗಿ ನಿಜವೆಂದು ಒತ್ತಿಹೇಳಲು ಬಳಸಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ.

Robin is the best teacher in the world. Absolutely.

ರಾಬಿನ್ ವಿಶ್ವದ ಅತ್ಯುತ್ತಮ ಶಿಕ್ಷಕ. ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣವಾಗಿ.

No doubt. Away from the doubt.

ಅನುಮಾನವಿಲ್ಲದೆ. ಅನುಮಾನದಿಂದ ದೂರ.

Example sentence - Learning English is absolutely essential for making international friends.

ಉದಾಹರಣೆ ವಾಕ್ಯ - ಅಂತರರಾಷ್ಟ್ರೀಯ ಸ್ನೇಹಿತರನ್ನು ಮಾಡಲು ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್ ಕಲಿಯುವುದು ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣವಾಗಿ ಅವಶ್ಯಕವಾಗಿದೆ.

Do you agree with that?

ನೀವು ಅದನ್ನು ಒಪ್ಪುತ್ತೀರಾ?

And the last one.

ಮತ್ತು ಕೊನೆಯದು.

Abuse - away from proper use.

ನಿಂದನೆ - ಸರಿಯಾದ ಬಳಕೆಯಿಂದ ದೂರ.

You have the way to use or use something,

ನೀವು ಏನನ್ನಾದರೂ ಬಳಸಲು ಅಥವಾ ಬಳಸಲು ಮಾರ್ಗವನ್ನು ಹೊಂದಿದ್ದೀರಿ,

the proper way and you're away from that. So it's abuse.

You're not using it properly.

As we all know, politicians abuse their power.

ನಮಗೆಲ್ಲ ತಿಳಿದಿರುವಂತೆ ರಾಜಕಾರಣಿಗಳು ತಮ್ಮ ಅಧಿಕಾರವನ್ನು ದುರುಪಯೋಗಪಡಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತಾರೆ.

They have power. They do not use the power correctly. They abuse it. They use it in the wrong way.

ಅವರಿಗೆ ಶಕ್ತಿ ಇದೆ. ಅವರು ಅಧಿಕಾರವನ್ನು ಸರಿಯಾಗಿ ಬಳಸುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ಅವರು ಅದನ್ನು ದುರುಪಯೋಗಪಡಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಅವರು ಅದನ್ನು ತಪ್ಪು ರೀತಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಬಳಸುತ್ತಾರೆ.

And here's unfortunately another example of 'abuse'.

ಮತ್ತು ದುರದೃಷ್ಟವಶಾತ್ 'ದುರುಪಯೋಗ'ದ ಇನ್ನೊಂದು ಉದಾಹರಣೆ ಇಲ್ಲಿದೆ.

The wife was a victim of domestic abuse.

ಕೌಟುಂಬಿಕ ದೌರ್ಜನ್ಯಕ್ಕೆ ಪತ್ನಿ ಬಲಿಯಾಗಿದ್ದರು.

So when do we use 'domestic abuse'?

ಹಾಗಾದರೆ ನಾವು ಯಾವಾಗ 'ಗೃಹ ದುರ್ಬಳಕೆ' ಬಳಸುತ್ತೇವೆ?

That means the husband, or the partner,

ಅಂದರೆ ಪತಿ, ಅಥವಾ ಪಾಲುದಾರರು

was hitting them, you know,

ಅವರನ್ನು ಹೊಡೆಯುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು, ನಿಮಗೆ ಗೊತ್ತಾ,

abusing them, maybe verbal abuse or physical abuse, some sort of bad thing to the wife.

ಅವರನ್ನು ನಿಂದಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು, ಬಹುಶಃ ಮೌಖಿಕ ನಿಂದನೆ ಅಥವಾ ದೈಹಿಕ ನಿಂದನೆ, ಹೆಂಡತಿಗೆ ಕೆಲವು ರೀತಿಯ ಕೆಟ್ಟ ವಿಷಯ.

It's very unfortunate, but that's how we use it. So that's abuse.

All these words have that A-B prefix.
