I've got a pronunciation video for you today

יש לי סרטון הגיה בשבילכם היום

and it's all about 10 words that you might be pronouncing incorrectly

וכולו על 10 מילים שאתם עשויים להגות לא נכון

So, let's get started

אז, בואו נתחיל

Ok so the first word is this one!

אוקיי, אז המילה הראשונה היא זאת: fruit (פרי)

How would you say it?

איך אתם הייתם אומרים אותה?

it's not fru-it

זה לא "fru-it"

There are not two syllables there

אין שם שתי הברות

We actually pronounce this word 'fruit'

למעשה אנו מבטאים את המילה הזאת 'fruit' (פרוט)

fruit

fruit

So many students make the mistake of saying 'fru-it'

כל כך הרבה תלמידים טועים באומרם fru-it (פרו-איט)

or fruiiiit, fruiiit

או fruiiiit.. או fruiiit

But no, it's just fruit

אבל לא, זה פשוט fruit

And fruit is my favourite food

ופירות הם האוכל האהוב עליי

The next word we have is this one

המילה הבאה שיש לנו היא זו: chaos (כאוס)

So many students actually pronounce this how they would pronounce it in their own language

אז הרבה תלמידים למעשה מבטאים אותה כמו שהם היו מבטאים אותה בשפה שלהם

Probably the Italians and the Spanish more than anything

כנראה האיטלקים והספרדים יותר מהכל

But we pronounce this not cha-os

אבל אנחנו מבטאים אותה לא "cha-os" (קא-אוס)

not cha-os

לא "קה-אוס"

But chaos

אלא chaos

We almost add a 'y' sound 'chaos'

אנחנו כמעט מוסיפים צליל של y, כאוס

It was an absolute chaos

זה היה כאוס מוחלט

The same with the adjective form.. it was 'chaotic'.

אותו דבר עם צורת התואר... זה היה כאוטי

Ok, number three, we have...

אוקיי, מספר שלוש, יש לנו... "queue" (תור)

Now I remember learning to spell this word when I was at school

עכשיו.. אני זוכרת שלמדתי לבטא את המילה הזאת כשאני הייתי בבית הספר

and thinking 'wow, that's a crazy spelling'

וחשבתי "ואוו, זאת הגייה מטורפת"

because it's so different to the pronunciation

כי זה כל כך שונה בהיגוי

Now I've heard all different pronunciations for this word

עכשיו.. שמעתי את כל ההגיות השונות למילה הזאת

I've heard kuwew, I've head kyooyoo

שמעתי "קווה-ווה", שמעתי "קיו-יו"

But really we just say 'queue', 'queue'

אבל באמת, אנחנו פשוט אומרים "קיו" (queue)

one syllable, and everyone knows that British people

הברה אחת, וכולם יודעים שאנשים בריטים

love queueing, queue, to queue, there is a queue

אוהבים לעמוד בתור, תור, לעמוד בתור, הנה תור

The verb and the noun as well

זה פועל וגם שם עצם.

Now on to number four and this one always makes me laugh when people say this

עכשיו נמשיך למספר ארבע, המילה הזאת תמיד גורמת לי לצחוק כשאנשים אומרים אותה

cause it is really difficult to say. it is...

כי ממש מסובך להגיד אותה. והיא: crisps (צ'יפס)

this one

זאת .

Now I hear people say 'crips'

עכשיו אני שומעת שאנשים אומרים crips (קריפס)

I used to work in a cafe with a lot of foreign workers

פעם עבדתי בבית קפה עם הרבה עובדים זרים

and they would always say 'Where are the crips?'

והם תמיד אמרו "איפה הקריפס?" (הערת מתרגמת: "איפה הצ'יפס?" עם שגיאה)

and I'd be like 'crips? are you talking about crepes?'

ואני הייתי כזה, "קריפס?, אתם מדברים על הקרפים?"

We say 'crisps'

אנחנו אומרים crisps (קריספס)

This 'sps' sound is very difficult for some people to say so you need to practice this in the mirror before you brush your teeth every night...crisps

לחלק מהאנשים קשה מאוד לבטא את צליל ה"ספס" הזה אז אתם צריכים להתאמן על זה מול המראה לפני שאתם מצחצחים שיניים בכל ערב... קריספס

Ok number five is this one

אוקיי אז מספר חמש הוא זה: recipe (מתכון)

If you like cooking then you should have seen this word before

אם אתם אוהבים לבשל אז הייתם אמורים להיתקל במילה הזאת לפני

And most people say resips or reseeps

ורוב האנשים אומרים resips או reseeps

But it should be recipe

אבל זה צריך להיות recipe ("רסיפי")

So it's very irregular this word

אז.. המילה הזאת היא מאוד בלתי רגילה

normally when an e is on the end we don't pronounce it

בדרך כלל כשיש e בסוף מילה אנחנו לא הוגים אותה

but in this case we do

אבל במקרה הזה אנחנו כן

recipe, three syllables

recipe, שלוש הברות

OK, number 6, this one..

אוקיי, מילה מספר שש, היא: comfortable (נוח)

OK, so many people pronounce this incorrectly.

אוקי אז כל כך הרבה אנשים מבטאים אותה לא נכון

they want to say every syllable

הם רוצים להגיד כל הברה

so they say com-for-ta-ble

אז הם אומרים com-for-ta-ble (קומ-פור-טה-בל)

but really it's comfortable

אבל באמת זה comfortable (קומפטבל)

comfortable, so it's not com-for-ta-ble, it's just comf-t-ble

comfortable, אז זה לא com-for-ta-ble, זה פשוט comf-t-ble

OK, so we actually lose a syllable there.

טוב אז אנחנו למעשה מאבדים שם הברה

the same goes for number seven which is

אותו דבר חל על מספר שבע שהוא: vegetable (ירק)

not veg-e-ta-ble

לא veg-e-ta-ble

vegetable

vegetable

not ve-ge-ta-ble

לא veg-e-ta-ble

similarly we have number 8

באופן דומה יש לנו את מספר שמונה: chocolate (שוקולד)

very important word, if you don't know this word then you're crazy

מילה מאוד חשובה, אם אתם לא מכירים את המילה הזאת אתם משוגעים

cause it's a big part of my life

כי היא חלק גדול מחיי

I hear many people say 'cho-co-late'

אני שומעת הרבה אנשים שאומרים cho-co-late ("צ'ו-קו-לט")

or cho-co-late...choco...choco

or cho-co-late...choco...choco

but we say chok-lit

אבל אנחנו אומרים chok-lit (צ'וק-לט)

chocolate

שוקולד

So it's just 2 syllables and I understand it's quite hard for many people to pronouce

אז אלה הן רק 2 הברות ואני מבינה שזה די קשה לאנשים להגות

but, you wanna speak English well you got to practice

אבל, אם אתם רוצים לדבר אנגלית טוב אתם צריכים להתאמן

so chocolate...chocolate

אז.. שוקולד. שוקולד

OK and my last two are days of the week

אוקיי אז השתיים האחרונות שלי הן מימות השבוע

so number nine...this one...

אז מספר תשע, זה: tuesday (יום שלישי)

not one of my favourite days of the week but it's very important to pronounce it correctly

לא אחד מימי השבוע האהובים עליי אבל מאוד חשוב לבטא אותו נכון

I always hear Tu-es-day

אני תמיד שומעת Tu-es-day ("טו-אס-דיי")

tu-es-day

tu-es-day

When in reality it's Tuesday

כשבמציאות זה Tuesday (טיוזדיי)

choose, like I want to choose what I'm having for breakfast this morning

צ'וז (choose, לבחור), כאילו אני רוצה לבחור מה אני אוכל לארוחת בוקר היום

Tuesday, not tu-es-day, Tuesday

Tuesday, לא טו-אס-דיי, Tuesday

and then the last one....

ואז האחרון: wednsday (יום רביעי)

Another day of the week

עוד יום בשבוע

not wed-nes-day....Wednesday

לא wed-nes-day ("ווד-נס-דיי"), Wednesday

not wed-nes-day...Wednesday

לא wed-nes-day ("ווד-נס-דיי"), Wednesday
